Israel Tasks UAE With Governing Post-War Gaza: Report

A consortium of private security contractors will operate the Netzarim corridor to control displaced Palestinians returning to their homes in the northern strip

The UAE and Israel agreed that the Gulf emirate would take over the management of the Gaza Strip after the war, Israel Hayom reported on 22 January.

Some have proposed the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs parts of the occupied West Bank on Israel's behalf, be tasked with controlling the strip should the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas hold.

However, the two countries agreed the UAE would take over governance of the strip only following an “invitation” by the Palestinians.

The agreement comes after Israel's Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer said in the Knesset on Wednesday that any initiative for the governance of Gaza seen as coming on behalf of Israel would be viewed as illegitimate. It would be “dead on arrival,” he said.

Dermer added that Israel is “working on it, and [he is] a partner in this work regarding the day after in Gaza.”

US-Backed Syrian Authorities Conduct Dozens Of Sectarian Executions

Alawites, Christians, and members of other minority groups have been systematically targeted by Syria’s new government since it came to power

Syria’s government forces executed five Alawites in the countryside of the central governorate of Hama on 27 January and dozens of others in the past few days, according to the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

SOHR director Rami Abdul Rahman told Al-Hurra TV in an interview on Monday that “35 people were executed in the field during the past few days, and today, five others from the Alawite sect were executed by an armed group in the northern Hama countryside.”

The perpetrators belonged to groups under the command of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led (HTS) Military Operations Department – which has been waging an indiscriminate crackdown on elements of the former Syrian Arab Army (SAA) since the new government came to power last month.

“These militants are loose and undisciplined groups that operate under the Operations Department, and [HTS] may not be able to control them” despite dozens of them having been arrested, Abdul Rahman added.

He confirmed that “these [people who were executed] are not remnants of the [former] regime,” adding that “we have moved to a new state for transitional justice, not revenge.”

New ICJ President Plagiarized In The Name Of Christian Zionism

Julia Sebutinde is a dedicated Christian Zionist who stood alone in rejecting South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Now the court’s president, the Ugandan judge appears to have plagiarized sections of her dissenting opinion justifying Israel’s occupation of Palestinian Territories.

With new countries joining South Africa’s case accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, and a ceasefire potentially enabling war crimes investigators to gather fresh evidence of Israeli atrocities, a leadership shakeup at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) threatens to undermine the campaign for legal accountability.

The ICJ’s President Nawaf Salam resigned on January 14, 2025 to become Prime Minister of Lebanon, and was succeeded by Justice Julia Sebutinde of Uganda. Many observers were stunned when Sebutinde voted “no” on all resolutions introduced by South Africa in January 2024, placing herself in opposition to all ICJ judges, including her Israeli colleague, Aharon Barak.

The Ugandan judge rejected the court’s call for the Israeli military to halt deliberate assaults on civilians, end its policy of forced displacement, and cancel its planned invasion of Rafah. In a previous advisory case on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian Territories, Sebutinde insisted that Palestinians had not been subjected to any military occupation whatsoever. In fact, she concluded that Israel may have the right to maintain a permanent presence in the West Bank and the whole of Jerusalem on the basis of purely biblical claims.

Sebutinde’s opinion opened with a lengthy history of the Israel-Palestine conflict that blended well-worn Zionist propaganda with the Old Testament. In rejecting her colleagues’ ruling declaring Israel’s military occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem illegal, she resorted to accounts of the Jewish presence in the biblical land of Israel, omitting any mention of UN resolutions or international law.

“There is substantial evidence that Jewish people lived in the region of ancient Israel between 1000-586 BCE. This period corresponds to the era of the United Monarchy under Kings Saul, David, and Solomon, and the subsequent divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The evidence includes archaeological findings in the City of David…” Sebutinde insisted. “The Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) offers detailed accounts of the history, culture, and governance of the Israelites during this period. While these texts are religious in nature, many scholars consider them valuable historical documents.”

Her opinion was so extreme, and so shot through with theological commentary, it prompted Uganda’s ambassador to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare, to declare her “ruling at the International Court of Justice does not represent the Government of Uganda’s position on the situation in Palestine.”

After probing deeper into Sebutinde’s bizarre dissent, a Princeton University graduate student named Zachary Foster discovered that large sections of it had been plagiarized from sources including neoconservative operative Douglas Feith and the Jewish Virtual Library.

So what accounted for Sebutinde’s defiance in the face of the entire ICJ panel and her own country’s diplomatic corps? Had she been handled by malign external forces? Or was she driven by deeply held personal passions?

Israel’s history of bribing, threatening and blackmailing officials around the world – and destroying those who forcefully oppose it – is well documented. Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, fell under heavy Mossad surveillance after he introduced warrants for the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his then-Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant. In October, 2024 when an anonymous accuser brought forward allegations of sexual harassment against Khan, there could be little doubt an Israeli hand had finessed the scandal...

Smotrich Says He’s Working To Enact Trump’s Idea To ‘Clean Out’ Palestinians From Gaza

The Israeli finance minister said the 'weak opposition' from Egypt and Jordan could be overcome

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said he’s working to make President Trump’s suggestion that Palestinians could be “cleaned out” of Gaza and moved to Egypt and Jordan a reality.

Trump’s idea sparked a backlash from Arab nations, including Egypt and Jordan, who said they strongly opposed the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. Smotrich downplayed their response, calling it “weak opposition.”

Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of his Religious Zionism party, Smotrich told reporters that he’s working with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on an “operational plan” to implement Trump’s proposal.

“I am working with the prime minister and the cabinet to prepare an operational plan and ensure the realization of President Trump’s vision,” Smotrich said, according to The Times of Israel .

“There is nothing to be excited about the weak opposition of Egypt and Jordan to the plan. We saw yesterday how Trump [imposed his will on] Colombia to deport immigrants despite its opposition. When he wants it, it happens,” Smotrich added...

The finance minister claimed there is “no doubt that in the long term, encouraging emigration is the only solution that will bring peace and security to the residents of Israel and also ease the suffering of the Arab residents of Gaza.”

Smotrich has been threatening that his Religious Zionism party will quit Netanyahu’s government if military operations in Gaza are not restarted after the first 42-day phase of the ceasefire deal. He has claimed that he’s received a guarantee that the genocidal war would not only continue but escalate and that the goal would be the “gradual takeover of the entire Gaza Strip.”
