Qatari PM ‘Hopes’ To See PA Govern Post-War Gaza

Israel’s prime minister has denied a report that an agreement has been reached on the PA assuming control over the Rafah crossing

Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani expressed “hope” on 22 January that the Palestinian Authority (PA) will govern the Gaza Strip, coming days into a ceasefire in the besieged enclave that is meant to put an end to the genocidal war which began in 2023.

The comments were made at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Switzerland.

“We hope to see the PA back in Gaza. We hope to see a government that will really address the issues of the people over there. And there is a long way to go with Gaza and the destruction,” Al-Thani said.

According to a new report by Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, citing a source in the ceasefire monitoring team, an agreement has been reached that will see the PA govern the Rafah border crossing in the southern Gaza Strip – under “international supervision.”

The agreement was reached on January 21 following Cairo talks on the Gaza ceasefire, involving Mossad chief David Barnea, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, and Egyptian intelligence head Hassan Rashad.

Discontent against the PA in the West Bank has been growing exponentially in recent years, as Palestinians generally consider the organization a tool Israel uses to further the occupation.

A March 2022 poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip showed that only 27 percent of people were satisfied with the performance of the PA, while “dissatisfaction” was at 70 percent.

Google Reportedly Worked Directly With Israel’s Military On AI Tools

The company raced to beat Amazon to sell AI tools to the Israel Defense Forces.

Google worked with the Israeli military in the immediate aftermath of its ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, racing to beat out Amazon to provide AI services, according to company documents obtained by the Washington Post .

In the weeks after Hamas’s October 7th attack on Israel, employees at Google’s cloud division worked directly with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) — even as the company told both the public and its own employees that Google only worked with civilian government ministries, the documents reportedly show.

Weeks after the war began, an employee with Google’s cloud division escalated the IDF’s military’s requests for access to Google’s AI technology, according to the Post . In another document, an employee warned that Google needed to quickly respond to the military’s requests, or else Israel would turn to Amazon for its cloud computing needs. In a November 2023 document, an employee thanks a coworker for handling the IDF’s request. Months later, employees requested additional access to AI tools for the IDF.

Amid this, Google was punishing employees for protesting Project Nimbus, Israel’s $1.2 billion contract for Google and Amazon’s cloud computing services. Google fired 28 employees who staged sit-in protests at the company’s offices in New York and California, some of whom were also arrested during the demonstrations.

Six Killed As Syrian Security Forces Raid Town In Western Homs

Reports of sectarian killings by Syria's new HTS-led security forces continue to emerge

Six people were killed and dozens detained in Syria’s central Homs province during a raid by security forces from Syria’s new government, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on 21 January.

The raid was carried out in the Shia-majority village of Ghour al-Gharbiya near the Lebanese border.

The UK-based SOHR, which relies on a network of sources in Syria, said that among those killed were two “armed individuals” who died during clashes with security forces, while the other four were “civilians executed by local gunmen who entered the town” alongside the security forces.

Syrian state media SANA said security forces were operating in the area around “against the remaining militias supporting” ousted president Bashar al-Assad.

An “arms depot and munitions belonging to the ousted regime” were found, SANA added.

❗️Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat told Reuters in an interview during the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, that the reconstruction of Gaza is not possible unless 'Hamas decided it wanted lasting peace with Israel.'

Israel Seeks To Delay South Lebanon Withdrawal By 30 Days: Report

Hezbollah officials have said that the resistance will confront the Israeli troops if they do not withdraw by the end of the 60-day period, which is due in a few days

Israel has requested that Washington approve an extension for its army’s presence in the south of Lebanon past the 60-day ceasefire implementation period, which is set to end this weekend, according to Israeli media.

“Israel has requested the US for a 30-day extension to the IDF's deadline for withdrawing from southern Lebanon set in the ceasefire agreement,” Haaretz newspaper reported on 23 January.

A French diplomatic source told the newspaper that France, Israel, and Lebanon are holding “intensive” talks on the matter, adding that Paris will agree to any outcome accepted by all parties that guarantees the continuation of the ceasefire.

Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Herzog, confirmed to Haaretz that Tel Aviv is discussing the possible extension with the government of US President Donald Trump.

Herzog said the US understands Israel’s “security concerns,” and that a deal can be reached.

Palestinians Celebrate As 200 Captives Freed From Israeli Prisons

The second group of Palestinian prisoners released as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal includes 121 serving life sentences

Israeli authorities released 200 Palestinians from Israeli prisons on 25 January as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement with Hamas.

WAFA news agency reports that according to the Palestinian Commission for Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society, the group includes 121 who were serving life sentences and 79 serving long-term sentences.

Hamas released four female Israeli soldiers as part of the deal earlier in the day.

One hundred fourteen Palestinian prisoners were transferred from Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank for release in Ramallah, 16 were returned to Gaza, and 70 were exiled outside Palestine, WAFA added. Egypt will host them for 48 hours before they are sent to Tunisia, Algeria, and Turkiye – which all agreed to receive them.
