Spain Expels Two US Spies For Infiltrating Secret Service

The Spanish government has spoken to the U.S. ambassador about its concern regarding the hostile actions, which are not expected between two allies

The discovery that two agents from Spain’s CNI intelligence service were bribed to provide classified information to the United States has led to an unprecedented situation between Madrid and Washington. Spanish Minister of Defense Margarita Robles, who oversees the CNI, summoned the U.S. ambassador to Spain, Julissa Reynoso, to her office to explain what happened. Such actions are considered hostile and are not expected between two allies.

The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, also spoke with Reynoso and expressed the Spanish government’s unease over the revelations, according to government sources. At least two U.S. agents stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, who were directly involved in recruiting the CNI spies, have been discreetly expelled from Spain.

The investigation into the spying operation began before the summer, when during a CNI security check, it was discovered that the two Spanish agents had accessed classified information that they did not need for their work, nor were authorized to know. The internal investigation confirmed that at least one of the agents, a middle-ranking official at the secret service, had been recruited by U.S. spies to obtain secret information in exchange for a large sum of money. According to sources close to the CNI, the agent was an area chief, one of the sections that are part of the intelligence division, while the other was his assistant.

Milei Takes Office As Argentina Braces For Economic Reforms

Javier Milei will on Sunday be sworn in as Argentina's president, as the country steels itself for harsh spending cuts and economic reforms aimed at curbing rampant inflation.

The 53-year-old libertarian economist has vowed there will be no "half-measures" as he tackles decades of overspending, debt, and convoluted currency controls in Latin America's third-biggest economy.

The inauguration ceremony in Buenos Aires is bringing together a diverse handful of world leaders, including Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban -- the only EU leader who has maintained close ties to the Kremlin.

Chile's leftist leader Gabriel Boric and the King of Spain Felipe VI are also attending, as is Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro.

White House Wants Israeli Ground War In Gaza To End Within Weeks: Report

Israeli planners have previously said they are planning for a ‘very long’ war aimed at 'eradicating' Hamas rule in Gaza

Senior US officials told CNN on 5 December that Washington hopes Israel’s ground operation in southern Gaza will last for just a few more weeks and potentially end in January.

After this, Israel should transition “to a lower-intensity, hyper-localized strategy that narrowly targets specific Hamas militants and leaders,” the officials said.

One of the officials highlighted Washington’s concerns over how the operation in south Gaza will be conducted, adding that the US has warned Israel in “hard” and “direct” talks that the amount of damage and civilian casualties inflicted on the north cannot be repeated.

“As global opinion has increasingly turned against its ground campaign […] the amount of time Israel has to continue the operation in its current form and still maintain meaningful international support is quickly waning,” the reports say.

An official familiar with US intelligence assessments said that Israel cannot maintain the same level of intensity in its operation. The source added that Israel has needed to counter Hezbollah’s daily attacks on its northern border, citing this as another reason for scaling back the Gaza operation.

“US officials are hopeful that Israel will move to a more targeted strategy by January, which will resemble how the US transitioned away from high-intensity combat in Iraq and Afghanistan to a narrower campaign against terrorist leaders,” the officials told CNN.

Washington said more than once, in the days leading up to the expiry of the seven-day truce and afterward, that Israel has been “receptive” to its advice on avoiding similar levels of carnage in south Gaza than in the northern strip.

However, since Israeli troops began pushing into the south, hundreds of Gazans have been killed, and Gaza’s southern hospitals are overrun with dead and wounded.

Tel Aviv has been warning that it is planning for a “very long war” in Gaza.

Sources familiar with Israeli war preparations told the Financial Times (FT) on 2 December that the intensive ground campaign is expected to last months, until at least early 2024, with more sporadic operations continuing beyond that time with no precise end date.

“This will be a very long war … We’re currently not near halfway to achieving our objectives,” said one person familiar with the Israeli plans.

“This isn’t going to be weeks,” said another source speaking with FT.

Yemen's Houthis Warn They Will Target All Ships Headed To Israel

Yemen's Houthi movement said on Saturday they would target all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned all international shipping companies against dealing with Israeli ports...

The Houthis have attacked and seized several Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea and its Bab al-Mandab strait, a sea lane through which much of the world's oil is shipped, and fired ballistic missiles and armed drones at Israel.

Houthi officials say their actions are a show of support for the Palestinians.

Israel said attacks on ships was an "Iranian act of terrorism" with consequences for international maritime security.

A Houthi military spokesperson said all ships sailing to Israeli ports are banned from the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

"If Gaza does not receive the food and medicine it needs, all ships in the Red Sea bound for Israeli ports, regardless of their nationality, will become a target for our armed forces," the spokesperson said in a statement.

Far-right deputy mayor of Jerusalem describes arrested Palestinians in Gaza as 'subhuman' and invokes biblical reference

The deputy mayor of Jerusalem, Aryeh Yitzhak King, has called for the Israeli army to bury alive hundreds of Palestinian civilians captured in Gaza.

In a post on X on Friday, King, a far-right politician, said the Israeli army was eliminating “Muslim Nazis” in Gaza and suggested it needed to pick up the pace.

The post made specific reference to footage published by the Israeli army showing captured Palestinians stripped to their underwear, kneeling on the ground and being guarded by Israeli soldiers.

King, in his post that has since been deleted for violating rules on X, said: “If it were up to me, I would have dispatched D-9 bulldozers and put them behind the mounds of dirt and would have given the order to cover all these hundreds of ants, while they're still alive.”

The men are thought to have been arrested in Beit Lahia, in the far north of the Gaza Strip.

Armenia: France's Arms Sales Are A 'Provocation', Says Turkey's Erdogan

Turkish president expressed anger at sale of 50 Bastion armoured vehicles to Yerevan by Paris

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has labelled the French government’s decision to supply Armenia with 50 Bastion armoured vehicles as a “provocation”.

Erdogan suggested that Yerevan should focus on peace, rather than falling into traps set by other countries.

"What France is doing is just provocation. France should know that it is not doing good to Armenia, on the contrary, it is doing harm," Erdogan told a group of journalists on Friday who had accompanied him on a state visit to Greece.

“France has previously supported Armenia. What result did they get? Nothing," he added.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said during a visit to Armenia in October that Paris had agreed to deliver military equipment to Armenian forces following Azerbaijan’s seizure of Nagorno-Karabakh, despite the presence of Russian peacekeepers in the area.

More than 100,000 ethnic Armenians left Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan attacked the area in a "counter-terror" operation in September, forcing Armenian separatists to sign a disarmament deal less than 24 hours after the offensive.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a nominal Azerbaijani territory under international law, with a majority ethnic Armenian population. It had previously been run by a breakaway Armenian authority.

Armenia did not resist the Azerbaijani offensive three months ago, blaming Russian forces for the failure. Yerevan confirmed that it recognised Azerbaijan's territorial unity, but called the ethnic Armenian exodus from Nagorno-Karabakh "forced displacement".

In an interview for Middle East Eye’s Big Picture series, Josh Paul explains how blanket support for Israel’s war in Gaza motivated him to resign

Former US State Department official Josh Paul has denounced the "double standard" in the Joe Biden administration's Israel-Palestine policy following the 7 October attacks and the subsequent war on Gaza.

Paul told Middle East Eye that very little has been done to regulate arms sales to Israel, in contrast to the sales made to Ukraine following the Russian invasion, which were subjected to thorough internal discussions over what the right weapons were and how they would be used.

This difference in the way Ukraine and Israel are treated is being noticed around the world, according to him.

“There is a blatant level of a double standard,” he said. “And what this has led to, I think it's been clear, is an unwillingness of the global South to stand with us increasingly on Ukraine, to say, ‘why should we vote with you against Russia in the United Nations when your hypocrisy is so blatant, when you are not standing up for the Palestinians?’”

Zelensky Hails Argentina's "New Beginning' at Milei Inauguration

Zelensky, making his first trip to Latin America since Russia's invasion, is looking to build support for his country's fight against the Russian invasion.

"This is a new beginning for Argentina, and I wish President Milei and the entire Argentinian people to surprise the world with their success," Zelensky said on social media after attending the ceremony.

Footage showed Zelensky and Milei embracing and speaking at the inauguration.

"I am also confident that bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Argentina will continue to expand," Zelensky added.

Zelensky had warmly welcomed Milei's victory end-November, thanking him for his "clear support for Ukraine."

Musk Asks Zelensky About Imprisoned American Journalist After Tucker Carlson Sounds Alarm

In May, American YouTuber and columnist Gonzalo Lira was arrested in Ukraine because he “publicly justified” the Russian invasion, according to a press release by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

The statement from Kiev said that Lira “has the citizenship of one of the countries of Latin America” but omitted that he is also California-born U.S. citizen.

Following his release, Lira said he was tortured in a Ukrainian prison. Grayzone reporter Liam Cosgrove pressed State Department spox Matthew Miller on the issue, asking how the Biden Administration has allowed an American to be tortued by a closely allied nation. Even more damning about Miller's non-answer is that 3 months prior, Miller admitted that the State Department was aware of Lira's imprisonment.

In a Saturday (Dec 9) post on X, Tucker Carlson highlighted Lira's situation and spoke with the journalist's father. Carlson asked why the Biden administration is allowing this, and questioned what kind of country Ukraine is for doing this to an American simply for criticizing the government.

In response, Elon Musk asked: "An American citizen is in prison n Ukraine after we sent over a $100 billion?" adding, "Is there more to this story than simply criticizing Zelensky?"

"If that’s all it is, then we have serious problem here."

Netanyahu is a "Clear and Present Danger" to Israel, Warns Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel

Former U.S. ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk slammed Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu as Sunday (Dec 10) “clear and present danger” to the country, and called on him to resign “before he does even more damage to Israel.”

“[Netanyahu’s] determination to stay in power no matter the cost is a clear and present danger to Israel. He needs to resign…yesterday!” Indyk wrote in a post on X Sunday morning.

His comments came following a New York Times report that Netanyahu not only was aware that Qatar was shuttling millions of dollars a month to Gaza, where it helped prop up the Hamas government, but that he encouraged the payments.

According to the Times report, Netanyahu and other Israeli officials allowed the money to flow into Gaza in the hope that it would help maintain peace and stability in the region, and in the belief that Hamas had neither the desire nor the capacity to launch a large-scale attack. The Times previously reported that Israeli officials had blueprints of the Hamas’ plans more than a year before the Oct. 7 attack but chose to regard an actual attack as unlikely.

“He needs to resign before he does even more damage to Israel,” wrote Indyk, who was tasked with working to forge an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal during his roughly year-long tenure as President Barack Obama’s special Mideast envoy in 2013 and 2014.

Al Gore Likens Social Media Algorithms To AR-15s, Calls For a Ban

Despite several jokes about Al Gore inventing the internet, it’s clear that the former Vice President has revealed that he knows little about how the internet works – or the First Amendment, for that matter.

Gore called for the banning of social media algorithms at the Bloomberg Green Summit at COP28.

Underscoring his argument with a comparison to signature firearms, Gore stated that algorithms that condition the course of social media, similar to AR-15’s, represent a threat and “ought to be banned.”

Gore complained that the rise of social media had “disrupted the balances that used to exist that made representative democracy work much better."

Netanyahu’s National Security Advisor Says Israel Ready to Act Against Houthis

Tzachi Hanegbi also signaled Israel could launch a war in Lebanon

Israeli National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi said on Saturday that Israel was ready to act against the Houthis in Yemen if the US and its allies do not.

“Israel is giving the world some time to organize in order to prevent this but if there isn’t to be a global arrangement, because it is a global issue, we will act in order to remove this naval siege,” Hanegbi told Israel’s Channel 12.

The Houthis have been targeting Israeli-linked commercial vessels and firing missiles and drones at Israel in response to the Israeli onslaught in Gaza. Hanegbi’s comments came after reports that said the Biden administration told Israel to leave it to the US to take care of the Houthis.

US officials have told POLITICO that the Biden administration is not planning to strike the Houthis, at least for now. The US has backed a Saudi-led coalition in a war against the Houthis since 2015, although a ceasefire has held relatively well since April 2022. Any US attacks on the Houthis could threaten the truce.

For the time being, the US is looking to form an international naval task force to get its allies to help protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthis have shown no sign of backing down as they warned they would target any ships that are bound for Israel. On Sunday, the French military said a French frigate shot down two drones in the Red Sea that were fired from Yemen.

Leaked UFO Documents Show Us Officials' 'Mutual Meeting' With Aliens At Crash Site

The documents appear to confirm that the infamous Roswell incident, long thought to be a conspiracy theory, did indeed happen

Leaked US government UFO files appear to confirm that the infamous Roswell incident did indeed happen. The documents also allegedly revealed that US officials met with two aliens at an "official meeting" almost 20 years after the apparent alien crash that saw Roswell, the area in New Mexico where the apparent alien crash took place in 1947, become a byword for extraterrestrial activity.

It is not clear where the documents came from, but they caused a huge stir when uploaded on Reddit. The front page of the files are labeled Project Aquarius and Project Sigma, which are names that the United States government had previously confirmed for projects.

Many of the pages are redacted but on one of the pages that are clear to read, it says that on July 7, 1947 - which is the date that a UFO is said to have crash landed in the town - a “secret operation was begun to assure recover of the wreckage of this object for scientific study."

That's not where the extraterrestrial bombshell revelations end, though. It was later claimed that, on April 25, 1964, US Air Force officials encountered aliens in the New Mexico desert. Known as the Lonnie Zamora incident, a local police officer claims to have seen two people standing beside a luminous object that suddenly rose into the sky.

....the leaked documents, regardless, go into great detail about the apparent encounter. “On April 25, 1964, a USAF intelligence officer met two aliens at a pre-arranged location in the desert in New Mexico," it says as part of Project Sigma.

“The contact lasted for approximately three hours. The Air Force officer managed to exchange basic information with the two aliens. This project is continuing at an Air Force base in New Mexico.”

The aerial bombing campaign by Israel in Gaza is the most indiscriminate in terms of civilian casualties in recent years, a study published by an Israeli newspaper has found.

The analysis in Haaretz came as Israeli forces fought to consolidate their control of northern Gaza on Saturday, bombing the Shejaiya district of Gaza City, while also conducting airstrikes on Rafah, a town on the southern border with Egypt where the Israeli army has told people in Gaza to take shelter.
