Gaza Ceasefire Takes Effect Following Israeli Delays, Attacks

Israel killed over a dozen civilians after delaying the initial timing of the start of the ceasefire implementation

After 471 days of Israel's genocidal war against Gaza, the ceasefire agreement took effect on the morning of 19 January, following an Israeli delay of the initial timing and the killing of over a dozen civilians in the strip.

The Israeli military has warned Palestinians in Gaza to avoid the "buffer zone" along the entire border and areas where Israeli forces are stationed following the start of the ceasefire agreement, set to begin at 8:30 am on Sunday.

The ceasefire was meant to take effect at 8:30 am on Sunday but was delayed several hours and started at 11:30 am.

Nineteen Palestinians were killed as a result of Israeli attacks on Rafah, Khan Yunis, and elsewhere in the hours leading up to the ceasefire implementation at 11:30 AM, according to the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip.

Over 36 people were injured in the attacks, which took place as displaced civilians began returning to their destroyed cities and neighborhoods.

WEF Director Backs UN’s Pro-Censorship AI Watchdog, Praises France’s AI Summit On Control, And Announces 2025 Focus On AI Governance

The World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting is coming up and top representatives of this unelected group gathering global elites are “coming out of the woodwork” once again, together with a predictable set of policy endorsements.

Many of those policies are built on ideas that originate and were first publicly voiced at the Davos meetings, to then over time become formalized by top-level international institutions like the United Nations (UN), making it somewhat difficult to understand which is older – the chicken or the egg.

Ahead of the start of this year’s summit, WEF Managing Director Mirek Dusek told a news conference that the 2025 WEF meeting will focus on “AI” – specifically around “ AI governance ” and how governments handle the technology.

At the same time, Dusek was praising related censorship and surveillance initiatives such as the upcoming France Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence but also giving a nod to the UN’s High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence.

The latter, in its role as a global AI watchdog, published a report in September that goes into a number of recommendations tied to surveillance and censorship.

Here, Dusek appears to refer to it when he says that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “achieved important success in September” by establishing a body referred to as “the first installment in terms of international collaboration around AI.”

Palestinian Authority, Resistance Reach Agreement To End Jenin Siege

The month-long seige was part of a PA campaign to target Palestinian resistance groups in the occupied West Bank city on Israel's behalf

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has reached an agreement with the Jenin Brigade that will end its six-week siege of the northern West Bank city and adjacent refugee camp, Israeli media reported on 17 January.

A PA official told The Times of Israel that the truce was reached Friday evening, a day after negotiations resumed following the cessation of Israeli airstrikes earlier this week.

Separate Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday and Wednesday killed 12 people, including several civilians.

The PA has its own security forces, which exert control over some areas of the occupied West Bank on behalf of the Israeli army.

The Jenin Brigade is made up of local fighters from various Palestinian resistance groups such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

Government Monitoring Those With "Negative" Views of Health Insurance Companies - Ken Klippenstein

New documents reveal flurry of intelligence activity following Luigi Mangione's arrest

If you expressed “negative sentiment” toward insurance companies on social media following the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO last month, the government was watching.

“Following the shooting, the New York State Intelligence Center (NYSIC-CTC) identified a large amount of negative sentiment towards healthcare executives and health insurance companies on social media,” a bulletin produced by a regional intelligence group on December 12 says. The bulletin goes on to warn of “users online wanting to counter ‘corporate greed’” as well as “growing negative sentiment around conglomerates, the wealthy, and executive staff at private and public organizations.” Setting aside the yeah-no-shit factor, the report provides rare insight into how the government threat machine stokes fear among law enforcement agencies across the country.

The document is one of a flurry threat reports quietly circulated to law enforcement across the country by a sprawling network of little-known intelligence organizations created in response to 9/11. Called fusion centers, groups like the New York State Intelligence Center were tasked with fighting terrorism, which alleged the killer Luigi Mangione was charged with. Today, there is at least one fusion center in all 50 states (even Wyoming, home to the Wyoming Information Analysis Team.)

Marked “LAW ENFORCEMENT USE ONLY,” the document quoted above is, like other intelligence reports, not usually available to the public. But this record was pried loose by the open records wizardry of the transparency nonprofit Property of the People . Without them, this report would join the countless others exempt from public scrutiny. That’s a real gift to the government agencies that produce these reports, which often serve little purpose beyond inflating supposed threats into zeppelin-like proportions.

Consider, for example, the report’s boldfaced title — “Executive ‘Hit Lists’” — evoking some kind of John Wick-style serial hitman. But the evidence for this amounts to “viral posts online” that “listed the names and salaries of several health insurance executives” and some “Wanted” signs posted in Manhattan. The repeated references to online discourse (e.g., “a sea of social media posts indicate that shooting suspect Luigi Mangione might be viewed as a martyr") leave the impression that the intelligence analyst does not understand the first rule of online: it isn’t real life.

To give a sense of just how many of these kinds of reports are pinballing around the law enforcement world, here’s one produced by the Southern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center (SNCTC) and also obtained by Property of the People . Like the New York bulletin, this one also focuses on “online rhetoric” expressing “criticism of the public health care system and corporate executives.” Sound familiar?
