According to Haaretz, Israel's position is one of the main disputes in the current negotiations

One of the main disputes in the ongoing Gaza hostage and ceasefire negotiations in Qatar is Israel’s refusal to commit to ending the war after a potential deal’s second phase, Haaretz reported on Sunday.

A permanent ceasefire has been one of Hamas’s main demands, and the report said the Palestinian group wants the genocidal war to end after the second phase of the deal.

Instead of committing to a permanent ceasefire, the report said there will be an attempt to present a US commitment to “work with Israel towards ending the war.” That would mean the deal would hinge on a US promise to pressure Israel to end military operations in Gaza, and there would be no actual commitment from Israel.

The Haaretz report comes as US officials are insisting that a deal is “very close.” Hamas officials have also told the media that negotiations have been moving in a positive direction and that they were waiting for the Israeli officials Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent to Qatar to approve their latest draft proposal.

Officials from the incoming Trump administration are also saying that a deal could happen soon, including Steve Witkoff, who will serve as Trump’s envoy to the Middle East and has been involved in the latest negotiations.

Israel's Haaretz Newspaper Reports That An Israeli Drone Assassinated Two Palestinian Cousins, Boys Aged 8 And 10, As They Were In The Yard Of The Families' Home In The West Bank Getting Ready For School. The Israeli Army Claims It Was Targeting Militants Suspected Of Laying Improvised Explosives.

Soldiers then smashed their way into the families' house, ransacked them, beat a paramedic trying to save the children, and pointed their rifles at one of the mothers as she tried to hold her son, forcing her back into the house.

Finally, the soldiers seized the boys' bodies, only returning them to the families many hours later.

Events like this have been happening to Palestinian families for many, many decades, invariably unreported by western media. Palestinian anger and resistance is then presented by that same media as irrational hatred and terrorism.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden will not lift the terrorist designation of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) US officials revealed on 8 January, leaving the decision to the government of President-elect Donald Trump.

Senior officials who spoke with the Washington Post said HTS “must demonstrate they have made a clean break with extremist groups, in particular Al-Qaeda before the label can be lifted.” “Actions will speak louder than words,” an unnamed official told the US daily.

According to the reports, Washington has “lingering concerns” after Syria's de facto new ruler Ahmad al-Sharaa – the former deputy commander of ISIS and founder of Al-Qaeda in Syria – green-lighted the promotion of foreign extremists to the ranks of officers in the newly formed armed forces.

Days after the fall of the Syrian government and the rise of HTS, Sharaa called on foreigners who joined HTS to receive Syrian citizenship, saying they are “part of the movement that led to the downfall of Assad and should be celebrated.”

As part of the US-backed covert war on the former Syrian government, ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi dispatched his deputy Abu Mohammad al-Julani – Sharaa's nom de guerre – and a group of extremist fighters from Iraq to Syria in August 2011 to establish the Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda's official branch in Syria.

CIA Director Reiterates There’s No Evidence Iran Has Decided To Build A Nuclear Bomb

The comments come amid reports that the Trump administration is considering military action against Iran's nuclear program

Outgoing CIA Director William Burns reiterated in an interview with NPR published on Friday that the US has not seen any sign that Iran has decided to build a nuclear weapon.

Burns was asked if the losses Iran and its allies have faced in recent months would make it more likely that Tehran would make a nuclear bomb. He said there was no indication that Tehran would reverse a public fatwa made by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 2003 that prohibited the development of weapons of mass destruction.

“We do not see any sign today that any such decision has been made, but we obviously watch it intently. You know that that sense of weakness could also theoretically create a possibility for serious negotiations, too,” Burns said.

Burns made similar comments in October and said at the time that if Iran did decide to make a bomb, US intelligence would likely be able to “see it relatively early on.”

The CIA chief’s latest comments come after media reports have said both the Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration are considering military actions against Iran’s nuclear program over claims that Tehran may be making advancements toward producing a weapon.

Gavin Newsom Says He's Already 'Reimagining LA 2.0' Post-Wildfire, And That California Needs A 'Marshall Plan' To Rebuild

As the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles continue to rage, Gov. Gavin Newsom is looking toward rebuilding an "LA 2.0" post-fire.

Newsom was asked in an NBC "Meet the Press" interview on Saturday if California would be ready to host the World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics over the next couple of years in the aftermath of the wildfires.

Speaking against the backdrop of a fire-ravaged neighborhood, Newsom said that he's already "organizing a Marshall Plan" and already has a team "looking and reimagining LA 2.0."

The Marshall Plan harkens back to the post-World War 2 period when President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. The act saw more than $13 billion invested in rebuilding Western Europe's economies, bringing investments into the region, and stimulating the US economy by building a market for American goods.

When asked for details of the new "Marshall Plan," Newsom said he was talking to city, civic, business, nonprofit, and labor leaders about recovery efforts and working to "galvanize the community."

"We have got to be thinking three weeks, three months, three years ahead; at the same time, we're focusing on the immediacy, which is life safety and property," he told NBC.

Representatives for Newsom did not provide further comments in response to queries from Business Insider.

Newsom said in the interview that the wildfires will likely be one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history, in terms of the costs associated with it and its scale and scope.

AccuWeather, a weather forecasting service, estimated the total economic damage to land between $52 and $57 billion. JPMorgan analysts estimated that insured losses could reach $20 billion.

The wildfires have ravaged over 40,300 acres of land across Los Angeles. At press time, at least 24 people have died, and according to CalFire statistics, more than 12,300 structures have been damaged.

As the fire passed through the wealthy Pacific Palisades neighborhood, the homes of several Hollywood A-listers, like Paris Hilton, Milo Ventimiglia, and Billy Crystal, burned down.

The two largest fires, the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, are only 11% and 27% contained, per CalFire.

❗️According to Reuters, the United States, France, and Germany, have expressed serious concerns to Syria's new HTS-led government regarding the appointment of foreign fighters to senior military positions.

US envoy Daniel Rubinstein addressed the issue directly with Syria's de facto leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa (Abu Mohammad al-Julani), during a meeting at the presidential palace in Damascus. Similarly, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock raised these concerns in discussions with Sharaa on 3 January.

In late 2024, Syria's new administration made nearly 50 military appointments, including at least six foreign fighters from countries such as China, Turkiye, Egypt, and Jordan. Notable appointees include Abdulaziz Dawood Khudaberdi, a Chinese Uyghur militant linked to the Turkestan Islamic Party, and Egyptian Alaa Mohamed Abdel-Baki, previously sentenced to life in prison in absentia in Egypt on "terrorism charges."

Biden Defends Foreign Policy Record Despite Raging Wars In Ukraine And Gaza

The president framed the Ukraine proxy war and US support for Israel's genocidal war in Gaza as a success

On Monday, President Biden delivered a speech at the State Department where he defended his foreign policy record despite the raging proxy war in Ukraine and Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza.

“The United States is winning the worldwide competition compared to four years ago,” Biden claimed. “America is stronger. Our alliances are stronger, our adversaries and competitors are weaker.”

The president claimed the US has not “gone to war to make these things happen,” but the US under his administration has intervened directly in several countries to support Israel in the Middle East, including Yemen , Syria , and Iraq .

Biden framed all of his foreign policy moves as a success, even the bombing campaign against the Houthis, even though after a year of US strikes on Yemen, the situation in the Red Sea has only escalated.

Discussing Gaza, Biden said Israel and Hamas are on the “brink” of reaching a hostage and ceasefire deal. He acknowledged that “so many innocent people” have been killed in Gaza but didn’t take any responsibility for supporting the slaughter of Palestinians.

Mike Waltz: Trump Administration Will Ask Ukraine To Lower Conscription Age

The minimum age for conscription in Ukraine is 25

President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming national security advisor, Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL), said Sunday that the Trump administration will ask Ukraine to lower the age of conscription so more troops can be sent to the frontlines.

Under Ukraine’s current mobilization laws, the minimum age for conscription is 25. The Biden administration has been calling for Ukraine to lower it to 18, and Waltz made clear the next administration will do the same thing.

“The other thing we are going to need to see is really stabilizing things on the battlefield. And one of the things we’ll be asking of the Ukrainians is, they have real manpower issues,” Waltz said in an interview with ABC News .

“Their draft age right now is 26 years old [25], not 18. I don’t think a lot of people realize that they could generate hundreds of thousands of new soldiers,” Waltz said. “So, when we hear about morale problems when we hear about issues on the front line. Look, if the Ukrainians have asked the entire world to be all in for democracy, we need them to be all in for democracy.”

Waltz framed the call to conscript younger Ukrainians and the need to “stabilize” the front as necessary to end the war. He said Trump will be speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon, possibly in the coming days and weeks, and will be working to form “relationships” needed to end the conflict.
