Israel Imposes Sweeping Restrictions To 'Protect Soldiers' From War Crimes Prosecution

Dozens of criminal complaints have been filed against Israeli soldiers by pro-Palestine groups in courts around the world

The Israeli army has issued fresh restrictions against media coverage of active-duty soldiers due to legal risks they face over war crimes in Gaza while traveling abroad, coming after a swarm of criminal complaints filed by pro-Palestine groups in courts worldwide.

The new rules stipulate that any media outlets interviewing soldiers with the rank of colonel will not be permitted to display their faces or full names, similar to the already existing rules for air force pilots and members of special forces units, Israeli army spokesman Nadav Shoshani told reporters on 8 January.

“This is our new guideline to protect our soldiers and to make sure they are safe from these types of incidents hosted by anti-Israel activists around the world,” he said.

He also said soldiers were not supposed to upload videos of themselves in warzones in the first place, “even though that’s never perfect and we have a large army.”

According to recent reports in Hebrew media, at least 50 criminal complaints in courts around the world have targeted Israeli soldiers for their role in Tel Aviv's ethnic cleansing...

Over the weekend, a Brazilian federal court ordered the police to open an immediate investigation into an Israeli soldier accused of committing war crimes in Gaza. The soldier was visiting.. for a vacation.

The soldier... seen in videos participating in the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza – arrived in Israel on Wednesday morning after fleeing Brazil with the help of the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

Upon arrival at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, the soldier told Channel 12 that he had learned from his error and would no longer upload videos from Gaza. “I won’t go back to Brazil again,” he added.

Last month, the Israeli army warned dozens of soldiers and officers who have served in Gaza not to travel to avoid legal action for their actions in the besieged strip.

“IDF reservists who fought in Gaza are being advised to first check with the [Israeli] Foreign Ministry regarding the level of danger in any country they wish to visit,” the Times of Israel reported on 4 December, adding that concerns have grown in Tel Aviv that senior officers could face prosecution abroad following the issuance of arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant.

Since the start of the genocide in Gaza, the internet has been flooded with videos filmed and posted by Israeli soldiers – which document the Israeli army’s practices of forced mass displacement, kidnapping, and destruction of homes and buildings.

Suleiman Frangieh, the leader of the Marada Movement and close ally of Hezbollah, withdrew his candidacy from the Lebanese presidential race on 8 January and endorsed the US-backed commander of the Lebanese army, Joseph Aoun.

The withdrawal comes one day ahead of a long-anticipated parliament session called to put an end to a more than two-year presidential vacuum and political deadlock.

“Now that the conditions for electing a president of the republic are available tomorrow, and in light of the way things have turned out, I announce the withdrawal of my candidacy, which was never an obstacle to the election process,” Frangieh said on Wednesday evening via X.

“While I thank everyone who voted for me, I – in line with what I had previously announced – support General Joseph Aoun, who has the qualifications to preserve the position of the first presidency. I wish the parliament success in the election process, and for the nation to pass this stage with unity, awareness, and responsibility,” he added.

The Lebanese presidency has been vacant since the end of Michel Aoun’s term in October 2022. Lebanese political forces have since reached a stalemate due to a lack of consensus over a choice and several failed attempts to elect a president in the parliament.

The two main candidates are the US-backed commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), Joseph Aoun (no relation to the former president), and Jihad Azour, a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) official and former finance minister whose name was put forward during efforts to elect a president in 2023.

Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader Gebran Bassil, whose party opposes Aoun, has pushed for Azour, while reportedly also expressing inclination toward the candidacy of former government minister and civil society activist Ziad Baroud.

The LAF commander, a close friend of the US Embassy, has been a big name in the stalled presidential race for over two years despite opposition from some political forces. He has enjoyed support from the US and Saudi Arabia, and is Washington’s preferred choice.

In October, Al-Akhbar newspaper reported that the US has hopes of using Aoun's presidency to counter Hezbollah inside Lebanon.

The UK government has taken a controversial step in its campaign to promote climate-friendly heat pumps by employing the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT), a group known for psychological manipulation under the guise of “nudging” public behavior. This move, which cost taxpayers £100,000 ($123,000) seeks to counter what the government claims is widespread misinformation about heat pumps — a technology central to Britain’s net-zero agenda.

Unpublished research from the Department for Energy highlights a troubling contradiction: those who believe they know a lot about heat pumps are often more reluctant to adopt them, while those with a basic understanding of the technology are more receptive.

Instead of fostering open dialogue and addressing valid critiques, the government’s approach relies on behavioral manipulation to steer public opinion in its favor.

The government contract with BIT explicitly identifies media coverage as a major barrier, singling out outlets like the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph.

While some criticisms—such as the high upfront costs of installation—are, the government believes, grounded in fact, others, such as claims that heat pumps are ineffective in cold weather, are dismissed as myths.

However, this effort to control the narrative raises concerns about censorship and the suppression of legitimate debate. Toby Park, BIT’s climate and energy head, stated: “Heat pumps are a very efficient low-carbon system for keeping our homes warm, but negative perceptions remain a barrier to their widespread adoption. Sometimes skepticism is due to real market challenges, such as affordability, but doesn’t take into account the whole picture, such as the availability of grants. In other cases, it can be due to myths such as the claim that heat pumps don’t work well in cold weather.”

As BIT finalizes its survey on public attitudes and media coverage, the government’s reliance on behavioral nudges over transparent communication reflects a troubling trend. Instead of fostering informed choice, these tactics risk alienating the public and suppressing valid concerns. US Embassy Urges Lebanon To 'Revive' Energy Deals Stalled By Washington Since 2022

For two and a half years, US officials and DC-based institutions have stalled the implementation of an energy-sharing deal that could help Lebanon mitigate its dire energy crisis

US ambassador Lisa Johnson urged Lebanon to “revive” dormant agreements with Jordan and Egypt for electricity imports via Syria, praising the “opportunity” after Washington eased some restrictions on Damascus this week.

Johnson made these comments during a meeting with Lebanese caretaker Energy Minister Walid Fayad on 8 January, the eve of a crucial parliamentary session where lawmakers are expected to vote on a president for the crisis-hit nation.

The deals that Johnson hopes Beirut will “revive” are the brainchild of her predecessor, Dorothy Shea, who proposed them in August 2021 as an alternative to Iranian fuel shipments brought into the country by Hezbollah, aimed at mitigating a severe energy crisis.

Under US sponsorship, the agreements to supply Lebanon with gas from Egypt and electricity from Jordan via Syria were made official in June 2022. The nations involved also repaired the Arab Gas Pipeline, while Damascus rehabilitated its electricity grid to sustain the transfers.

Nevertheless, since the signing of the agreements, the US government has repeatedly stalled the issue of sanctions waivers for Beirut, Amman, and Cairo to begin the transfers, claiming that helping Lebanon receive energy via Syrian territory would undermine US Caesar Act sanctions.

Documents published online lay out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s post-war vision for the Gaza Strip, known as “Gaza 2035,” the Jerusalem Post reported on 3 May.

The plan involves keeping Gaza under long-term Israeli security control, making major investments to rebuild the devastated enclave “from nothing” with Gulf assistance, turning Gaza into a regional trade and energy hub, and exploiting cheap Palestinian labor and natural gas for the benefit of Israeli business interests.

The document refers to Gaza as an “Iranian outpost” that “sabotages emerging supply chains” while euphemistically claiming it “thwarts any future hope for the Palestinian people.”

According to the document, the plan involves three steps.

The first step is planned to last 12 months and will see Israel create “safe areas free of Hamas control” in Gaza, starting first in the north and moving to the south.

Gazan Palestinians will run the safe zones under the supervision of a coalition of Arab states, which would be responsible for providing humanitarian aid.

Step two would last five to 10 years. The Israeli military will retain control of the strip, while the Arab states will be responsible for reconstruction under a newly established Gaza Rehabilitation Authority (GRA), and Palestinians will manage the safe areas.

Reconstruction efforts will involve “rebuilding from nothing” and designing new cities from scratch, featuring modern designs and planning. This implies that the Israeli military will continue to destroy much, if not all, of Gaza through bombing and controlled demolition.

Stage three would see Palestinians “self-govern” a demilitarized Gaza while Israel retains the right to act against “security threats.”

The final step, the Jerusalem Post notes, would be for the Palestinians to “fully manage Gaza independently” and join the Abraham Accords, an agreement binding several existing Arab states in an alliance with Israel.

The Jerusalem Post claims that the plan would benefit Palestinians in Gaza by offering them employment opportunities and eventual “self-governance” – under continued Israeli security control.

Many Israeli politicians have called for all of Gaza’s 2.3 million people to be forcibly expelled to Egypt or Europe. But the plan apparently calls for some to remain in Gaza as a source of cheap labor.

The Jerusalem Post says the plan would benefit the Gulf states by offering them “defensive pacts with the US and unfettered access to Gaza’s Mediterranean ports through railways and pipelines.”

The plan aims to turn Gaza into a significant industrial port on the Mediterranean, facilitating the export of Gazan goods, Saudi oil, and other raw materials from the Gulf....

Israel would tap the natural gas fields off the coast of Gaza to provide the energy needed for industrial manufacturing. Israel has blocked the development of the fields, which legally belong to Palestinians, for decades.

The Jerusalem Post adds that the plan included a proposal to manufacture electric cars in the free trade zone and complete with “cheap Chinese manufacturing,” further suggesting cheap Palestinian labor from Gaza would be critical to the proposal.

Israeli business interests would likely benefit most...

NYT added that the officials said the plan was “under consideration at the highest levels of Israel’s government.”

Any Israeli plan for post-war Gaza would also need to accommodate the demands of Israel’s far-right religious settler community, which demands colonizing Gaza and constructing Jewish settlements there after the war.

Israel Blocks UN Probe On 'Hamas Rape' Claims Fearing Inquiry Into Sexual Abuse Of Palestinians

Elected Israeli officials and settler groups last year started riots in defense of prison guards who gang-raped a Palestinian detainee inside the notorious Sde Teiman prison camp

Israeli officials have obstructed a UN investigation into alleged sexual crimes committed by Hamas fighters during the 7 October 2023 Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, fearing this would open the door to a probe into the rampant allegations of sexual violence against Palestinians inside Israeli torture camps.

According to a report by Israeli daily Haaretz, Tel Aviv rejected a request from Pramila Patten, the UN special representative of the secretary-general on sexual violence in conflict, to investigate the allegations against Hamas after she established that a necessary condition would be access to Israeli detention centers to probe claims against Israeli soldiers.

“The clear concern is that Israel will be the one to be added to the blacklist of entities and countries that engage in sexual violence in conflicts, while the terrorist organization Hamas will actually remain off the list,” Mia Schocken, director of the international department of the Israeli Women's Lobby told Haaretz.

Patten’s office previously confirmed plans to explore a future mission to the region, following invitations from both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Israeli government.

Thursday's report comes mere days after Israeli prosecutor Moran Gaz confirmed during an interview with Yediot Ahronoth that no allegations of rape or sexual assault by Hamas on 7 October have been filed.
