Turkish Drone Strikes US-Backed Kurds As Clashes Rage In North Syria

Kurdish fighters and Turkish-backed militants are fighting over control of the strategic Tishreen Dam near the Aleppo countryside

Heavy clashes between Turkish-backed militants and US-backed Kurdish fighters continued to rage across the Aleppo countryside in northern Syria on 8 December, as Ankara provided air cover to its proxies throughout the fighting.

A Turkish drone struck a vehicle belonging to the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the eastern Aleppo countryside on Wednesday. Turkish artillery shelling also hit the vicinity of the Qarqozak Bridge south of the city of Kobani (Ain al-Arab).

Factions from Ankara’s Syrian National Army (SNA) proxy force fired rockets at SDF positions near the bridge. Turkish drones also bombed an SDF rocket launcher near Manbij in the Aleppo countryside and an SDF vehicle in the city of Malikiyah northeast of Hasakah.

“Turkish warplanes bombed Tishreen Dam and its surroundings with a number of raids, coinciding with attacks carried out by mercenary factions affiliated with Turkey on villages north of Tishreen Dam and southeast of Manbij, where violent clashes are taking place,” SDF’s media center announced. Civilian casualties have been reported.

Turkiye’s proxies have been trying to secure control over the Tishreen Dam for weeks. The fighting between the SDF and the SNA has escalated recently – despite a fragile, US-brokered ceasefire agreement.

Japanese Yakuza Leader Pleads Guilty To Trafficking Nuclear Materials From Myanmar

US authorities charged Takeshi Ebisawa with conspiring to traffic nuclear materials from Myanmar for expected use by Iran in nuclear weapons

A member of the Japanese criminal underworld has pleaded guilty to handling nuclear material sourced from Myanmar and seeking to sell it to fund an illicit arms deal, US authorities have said.

Yakuza leader Takeshi Ebisawa and a co-defendant had previously been charged in April 2022 with drug trafficking and firearms offences, and both were remanded.

He was then additionally charged in February 2024 with conspiring to sell weapons-grade nuclear material and lethal narcotics from Myanmar, and to purchase military weaponry on behalf of an armed insurgent group, prosecutors said.

The military weaponry to be part of the arms deal included surface-to-air missiles, the indictment alleged.

"As he admitted in federal court today, Takeshi Ebisawa brazenly trafficked nuclear material, including weapons-grade plutonium, out of Burma,” acting US attorney Edward Kim said on Wednesday, using another name for Myanmar.

“At the same time, he worked to send massive quantities of heroin and methamphetamine to the United States in exchange for heavy-duty weaponry such as surface-to-air missiles to be used on battlefields in Burma.”

Prosecutors alleged that Ebisawa, 60, “brazenly” moved material containing uranium and weapons-grade plutonium, alongside drugs, from Myanmar.

From 2020, Ebisawa boasted to an undercover officer he had access to large quantities of nuclear materials that he sought to sell, providing photographs of materials alongside Geiger counters registering radiation.

During a sting operation including undercover agents, Thai authorities assisted US investigators in seizing two powdery yellow substances that the defendant described as “yellowcake.”

“The (US) laboratory determined that the isotope composition of the plutonium found in the Nuclear Samples is weapons-grade, meaning that the plutonium, if produced in sufficient quantities, would be suitable for use in a nuclear weapon,” the Justice Department said in its statement at the time.

One of Ebisawa’s co-conspirators claimed they “had available more than 2,000 kilograms (4,400 pounds) of Thorium-232 and more than 100 kilograms of uranium in the compound U3O8 – referring to a compound of uranium commonly found in the uranium concentrate powder known as ’yellowcake’.”

The indictment claimed Ebisawa had suggested using the proceeds of the sale of nuclear material to fund weapons purchases on behalf of an unnamed ethnic insurgent group in Myanmar.

Ebisawa faces up to 20 years’ imprisonment for the trafficking of nuclear materials internationally.

Prosecutors describe Ebisawa as a “leader of the Yakuza organised crime syndicate, a highly organised, transnational Japanese criminal network that operates around the world (and whose) criminal activities have included large-scale narcotics and weapons trafficking.”

Tel Aviv Continues South Lebanon Violations As US Envoy Promises ‘Full Israeli Withdrawal’

Lebanon’s premier has demanded a clear timetable for Israel’s withdrawal before the 60-day ceasefire period ends

Israeli troops advanced in south Lebanon and carried out artillery attacks against homes on 8 January, one day after Washington’s envoy promised that Tel Aviv would fully withdraw its forces from the country by the end of the 60-day ceasefire period.

Several homes were struck by Israeli artillery on the outskirts of the town of Bint Jbeil while armored vehicles advanced towards Maroun al-Ras, according to Al Mayadeen’s correspondent and Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).

Israeli forces also carried out a large detonation operation on the Rab al-Thalatheen–Taybeh Road in the Marjayoun District, NNA reported.

Artillery targeted the Marjayoun Plain and other areas earlier on Wednesday, including an attack which hit the house of Bint Jbeil’s mayor.

The Israeli army also blew up homes, set fire to forests, and destroyed sidewalks near Naqoura ahead of withdrawing from the area, according to NNA...

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati demanded on 8 December “a clear timetable” for Israel’s withdrawal before the 60-day ceasefire period.

The ceasefire agreement announced on 27 November, based on UN Resolution 1701, stipulates that the Lebanese army must dismantle Hezbollah’s presence and infrastructure south of the Litani River in a period of 60 days, during which Israel is also required to withdraw its forces from south Lebanon.

The agreement ... has been violated over 1,000 times by Israel.

2018 Flashback: How The United States Kept Arms Flowing Into South Sudan

South Sudan faces several arms embargo. How has the government continued to get weapons?

During the South Sudanese Civil War, which has claimed nearly 400,000 lives, the United States helped the main belligerent in the war continually acquire arms through Uganda, a close U.S. ally in the region.

For years, the Ugandan government channeled arms, ammunition, and military aircraft to the regime of President Salva Kiir, according to multiple reports by Conflict Armament Research and the U.N. Panel of Experts on South Sudan.

“Uganda remains the main transit point and facilitator for arms and ammunition to the regime,” former US diplomat Payton Knopf reported in September.

The constant flow of weapons into South Sudan has been devastating for the country. Not only have the weapons enabled President Kiir to maintain his military operations against his rivals, thereby perpetuating the war, but government forces have repeatedly used the weapons against civilians...

The war began in December 2013 when Kiir launched military operations against forces loyal to his former vice president, Riek Machar. Since the start of fighting, the country has devolved into periods of horrific violence, pushing parts of the country into famine in early 2017. Currently, about two million people are internally displaced and more than 2.5 million are living as refugees in neighboring countries. About 4.4 million people, or about half the population, remain severely food insecure.

For many years, the United States has been one of the main players in South Sudan. The Bush administration played an instrumental role in the diplomacy that culminated with South Sudan’s independence from Sudan in 2011. President Kiir likes to wear the cowboy hat that he received as a gift from George W. Bush.

Once South Sudan gained its independence, the Obama administration oversaw a major effort to create a formal South Sudanese military. Before the outbreak of the civil war, the US government had been providing the South Sudanese government with $40-60 million in military assistance every year.

Although the Obama administration began withholding military assistance during the civil war, it remained centrally involved in the country’s affairs, siding with President Kiir in the war. Perhaps most significant, the Obama administration spent years opposing calls for an arms embargo, making it easier for the Ugandan government to channel weapons to the Kiir regime.

“Despite what seemed like strong international consensus favoring an embargo, for several years the United States withheld support, and an embargo was not put on the UN Security Council agenda,” former Obama administration official Jon Temin acknowledged in a recent report.

In the absence of an arms embargo, the Ugandan government spent several years moving weapons and ammunition into South Sudan. Reports indicate that the Ugandan government agreed to purchase arms for the Kiir regime and transfer them into the country.

Some of the more advanced equipment that the Kiir regime received through Uganda include a military jet from the United States, a surveillance aircraft from Austria, and attack helicopters from Ukraine...

Having gained such significant military advantages, President Kiir continuously sought a military victory over his rivals, setting aside repeated calls for diplomacy. In early 2017, the UN Panel of Experts identified the Kiir regime as “the main belligerent in the war,” blaming it for escalating the war, obstructing humanitarian assistance, and placing millions at risk of famine.

President Kiir leads “a brutal regime that continues to murder and plunder its people,” former US diplomat Payton Knopf told Congress.

Israel To Produce Munitions 'Locally,' Reduce Reliance On US For Heavy Bombs

Israel's Defense Ministry signed two deals with Elbit Systems to produce munitions and the raw materials required to manufacture them

Israel’s Defense Ministry signed major new deals on 7 January with a domestic weapons manufacturer in hopes of achieving “independence” in producing the heavy munitions needed to continue its bombing campaigns in Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon.

The Defense Ministry announced it signed two deals worth $275 million with Israeli-based Elbit Systems to supply the military with thousands of heavy bombs and establish a new facility to manufacture raw materials.

The ministry said the agreements were “crucial for enhancing the IDF’s operational endurance and force build-up capabilities” and represented a “central lesson learned from the war.”

Under the first agreement, Elbit will supply the Israeli Air Force with thousands of heavy air munitions, reducing Israel’s dependence on US weapon shipments to keep waging its wars.

Under the second agreement, Elbit will establish a “national raw materials plant to produce raw materials that were sourced mainly from abroad before the war.”

'Movements Like These End Wars': Israelis Attend Conference Calling For IDF Service Refusal

In the first ever conference of its kind, speakers said soldiers should strip off their uniform and stand against the war. 'I realized there was no connection between the war and the defending of civilians,' said one attendee

...an audience was gathering for the next conference, organized by the writers of last October's letter, penned by reservists and conscripts, announcing that they would not report for duty until Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed the hostage deal.

More than 200 reservists and conscripts have signed the letter to date. More than 100 people came to the conference. But only a few audience members wore army pants, signalling that they are actually soldiers actively refusing to serve. When they stood up, they received a roar of applause from the crowd.
Most of the attendees were of the kind expected to appear at such an event – people too old to refuse to serve themselves, as attested by their graying hair.
"Tel Avivians," summarized a 17-year-old from the Gush Etzion settlement bloc in the West Bank, who stood out among the attendees. "I'm also against the war," he hastily said, explaining that his parents' political beliefs were left-leaning. "We simply live there."..

Shaked Rogel is a member of the security squad of Kibbutz Malkia, located 600 meters south of the Lebanese border. Rogel is also a reservist serving in the 7064th Battalion of the Combat Engineering Corps. He says that during his battalion's training, his commander said, "we're entering Lebanon to destroy Shi'ite villages."

...He said that he decided to refuse to serve at that moment, because this was clearly an illegal order. When asked if he announced his refusal at that moment, in front of his commander and surrounded by his comrades, Rogel replied that it was hard for him to object in real time.

Whitney Webb on Trump's Recent Statements on Forecefully Acquiring Greenland and Canada:

People should consider that arguably the main interest in Greenland (and also likely Canada as well) from the Trump camp and Musk is related to vast mineral deposits, particularly those necessary for the "energy transformation" and "EV revolution" that is directly tied to the business interests of Musk as well as other prominent Big Tech figures.

For example, aside from Musk, Jeff Bezos, who recently gave very very generously to Trump's inauguration fund, backs a firm called KoBold Metals along with Bill Gates, Reid Hoffman (who both backed Kamala) and Marc Andressen (currently advising Trump on tech policy) that is drilling in Greenland for EV related minerals. Northern Canada also possesses significant deposits of minerals essential to EV production.

The "digital transformation" that these Silicon Valley oligarchs are attempting to manifest would, admittedly, require all of the known deposits of lithium, nickel, cobalt and several other minerals across the planet. The US itself is not necessarily rich in these minerals (with some occasional exceptions) but some of its neighbors are.

If you are cheerleading for this, be aware that it 1. will help accelerate the "sustainable development" "digital transformation" that needs these minerals specifically 2. is not in the interest of the public of any of these countries, but instead in the interest mainly of American tech billionaires 3. will devastate the environment of Canada and Greenland (mining these things can permanently wreck the environment and water table) 4. boosting access to EV metals will also likely require existing incentives to purchase EV cars in the US to stay so these mining ventures have a high ROI - Trump has spoken about removing them but his ties to Musk and other Big tech billionaires suggests it is unlikely
