Israel has occupied 600 km of Syrian territory and carried out a massive bombing campaign in the country since Bashar al-Assad's fall
Al-Mayadeen reported on 4 January that the Israeli army brought reinforcements to the Al-Jazeera barracks in the village of Maariyah in the countryside of Deraa, on the Syrian-Jordanian border, in a further sign that Israel plans to expand its occupation of Syrian territory.
Sources speaking with the Lebanese channel said Israeli forces installed high concrete barriers and paved all the roads leading to the barracks. The sources added that the Israeli army has begun conducting armored patrols on the foothills at the base of the strategic Mount Hermon on the Syria-Lebanon border.
Israel has occupied some 600 km of Syrian territory after the government of Bashar al-Assad was toppled on 8 December by militants from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
Walla reported that "despite the pressure exerted by European parties on Israel, the political level directed the Israeli army to prepare for a long presence in Syrian territory."

Before President Joe Biden leaves office, he will approve one more massive arms sale to Israel. The $8 billion sale of missiles and artillery shells comes as human rights groups have labeled Israel’s war in Gaza as a genocide .
Axios reported on Friday, “The State Department has notified Congress “informally” of an $8 billion proposed arms deal with Israel that will include munitions for fighter jets and attack helicopters as well as artillery shells.”
Author Barak Ravid did not define what it means to “informally” notify Congress of the sale or if it fulfills the White House’s requirement to notify Congress of arms deals.
The massive arms sale to Tel Aviv comes after Amnesty International declared Israel’s onslaught in Gaza a genocide. “Amnesty International’s research has found sufficient basis to conclude that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip, the organization said in a landmark new report published today,” the report released in early December explained.
The sale includes AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, Hellfire AGM-114 missiles, 155 MM artillery rounds, small-diameter bombs, JDAM kits, and 500-pound bombs. Many of these munitions have been used by Israel during its campaign of extermination in Gaza, including in attacks on civilian targets.

To combat “medical misinformation,” the platform instituted a strict purge of dissenting voices, silencing everyone from epidemiologists to concerned moms armed with anecdotal evidence and Facebook memes.
Let’s not forget the lab leak theory, a hypothesis once relegated to tinfoil hat territory. When early adopters of the theory dared to post about it, their content was struck down faster than you could say “gain-of-function research.” Fast forward a couple of years and the lab-leak theory is now a “credible hypothesis,” endorsed by experts and even government agencies.
Oops.
But don’t expect an apology or even acknowledgment from YouTube for playing arbiter of acceptable science. They’ve quietly updated policies and moved on, leaving censored creators wondering why their “misinformation” turned out to be, well, information.

If you believe Neil Mohan, YouTube’s CEO, the platform is a modern-day Agora—a self-described “bastion of free speech” where the world’s most pressing debates thrive. Though, “just because it’s an open platform, it doesn’t mean that anything goes,” Mohan told The Financial Times in the last week.
Translation: Free speech is alive and well—until it isn’t. Because on YouTube, the marketplace of ideas comes with a bouncer, a velvet rope, and an ever-expanding list of banned words and topics.
This month, YouTube is eager to remind everyone it’s “committed” to free expression, a sentiment as convincing as a fast-food chain promising “health-conscious dining.” Over the last five years, the platform has turbocharged its content moderation policies, leaning on AI overlords and human censors to police conversations ranging from vaccine skepticism to who gets to call a virus a “lab leak.”
...Consider their “community guidelines,” a vague, shape-shifting set of rules that could find your grandma’s knitting tutorial in violation if it dares question Big Pharma.
Behind this rhetoric is an algorithmic enforcement machine programmed to flag, demonetize, or outright remove content at lightning speed—accuracy be damned. And when the AI overlords fumble, the human moderators step in, wielding their own biases like blunt instruments.

While the rest of the internet was speculating wildly about an X user named Adrian Dittmann actually being Elon Musk, investigative journalist Jacqueline Sweet was doing the real work . She tracked down Dittmann, a German living in Fiji, and published the story in The Spectator. Now X is blocking anyone from sharing her story and suspended her account for 30 days.
Over the last two weeks, the Dittmann question has consumed the tech press. The short version is that there’s a guy on X who loves to defend Elon Musk and who sounds a lot like him.
Not so, says Sweet. “The real-life Dittmann is the son of a German software entrepreneur who has launched several businesses in Fiji, including a forestry venture, a bottled water company and a marina and yachting facility,” she says in her Spectator investigation . “One of those companies entered the Musk Foundation’s $100 million Xprize Carbon Removal contest the same month the Dittmann X account was created, in July 2021.”
You can’t share her story on X. When you try, the site returns an error. “We can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by X or our partners as being potentially harmful,” it says.

On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry said , “At around 9am Moscow time, in order to stop the offensive by the Russian troops in the Kursk direction, the enemy launched a counter-attack by an assault detachment consisting of two tanks, one counter-obstacle vehicle, and 12 armored fighting vehicles.” Ukrainian officials unofficially confirmed the offensive.
South Front reported that Ukrainian forces captured some forested territory from the Russians.
In August, Kiev launched a surprise offensive against lightly defended Russian territory, seizing a large portion of the Kursk Oblast. After the initial Ukrainian push, Russian forces slowly recaptured about half of the territory from Ukraine.
The AP reported that the Russian gains have demoralized Ukrainian forces.
Recently, the Russian offensive has been making more progress. At the end of December, the White House told Ukrainian leaders to pull their forces from Russia before their retreat was cut off.
The fighting in Kursk is escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow as Kiev is using long-range US missiles to support its operations inside of Russia. On Friday, Ukraine fired US-provided ATACMS missiles at a Russian base in the Belgorod Oblast, with Russia subsequently vowing “retaliation.”
The new offensive comes as Kiev is pushing its Western backers for more air defenses. “We will discuss this with them and continue to persuade them,” Ukrainian President Zelensky on Saturday. “The task remains unchanged: strengthening our air defense.”

A Brazilian federal court has ordered police to open an immediate investigation into an Israeli soldier accused of committing war crimes in Gaza who is currently on vacation in the country.
According to the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), a Belgium-based NGO supporting Palestinian rights, the federal court of Brazil's federal district, citing Article 88 of the Brazilian Code of Criminal Procedure, “directed the Federal Police to urgently execute the investigative measures requested by the Federal Prosecutor.”
HRF said the court order “marks the first instance of a signatory state to the Rome Statute directly enforcing its provisions without relying on the International Criminal Court (ICC),” adding that it sets a “powerful precedent” for nations that adhere to international law to hold the perpetrators of the genocide in Gaza accountable for their actions.
“This is not a case of distant command,” said the foundation's lead lawyer, Maira Pinheiro. “This individual actively contributed to the destruction of homes and livelihoods, and his own statements and behavior clearly align with the genocidal objectives in Gaza.”
HRF says the unnamed soldier has been involved “in massive demolitions of civilian homes in Gaza.”

A Brazilian federal court has ordered police to open an immediate investigation into an Israeli soldier accused of committing war crimes in Gaza who is currently on vacation in the country.
According to the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), a Belgium-based NGO supporting Palestinian rights, the federal court of Brazil's federal district, citing Article 88 of the Brazilian Code of Criminal Procedure, “directed the Federal Police to urgently execute the investigative measures requested by the Federal Prosecutor.”
HRF said the court order “marks the first instance of a signatory state to the Rome Statute directly enforcing its provisions without relying on the International Criminal Court (ICC),” adding that it sets a “powerful precedent” for nations that adhere to international law to hold the perpetrators of the genocide in Gaza accountable for their actions.
“This is not a case of distant command,” said the foundation's lead lawyer, Maira Pinheiro. “This individual actively contributed to the destruction of homes and livelihoods, and his own statements and behavior clearly align with the genocidal objectives in Gaza.”
HRF says the unnamed soldier has been involved “in massive demolitions of civilian homes in Gaza.”

Israeli air strikes across Gaza have killed 62 Palestinians over the last day, Palestinian medics said, coinciding with reports that Israel plans to reduce aid allowed to enter the besieged enclave after US President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
Residents and medics said that 12 people were killed in the house of the Al-Ghoula family when a strike destroyed the building early Saturday, Reuters reported.
Medics said several children were among those killed following a desperate search for survivors. "A few flames and trails of smoke continued to rise from burning furniture in the ruins hours after the attack," Reuters added.
"At about 2 a.m. (00:00 GMT), we were woken up by the sound of a huge explosion," said Ahmed Ayyan, a neighbor of the Al-Ghoula family, adding that 14 or 15 people had been staying in the house.
"Most of them are women and children, they are all civilians, there is no one there who shot missiles, or is from the resistance," Ayyan told Reuters.

Videos Emerge Showing Syria's New Justice Minister Overseeing Public Executions In Idlib
Concerns are growing about the extremist nature of Syria's de facto authorities, who have already ordered sweeping reforms to the formerly secular education system
Fact-checking platform Verify-Sy on 4 January confirmed the authenticity of videos circulated on social media showing Syria's new minister of justice, Shadi Muhammad al-Waisi, overseeing the public execution of two women in the northwest city of Idlib as part of the application of Sharia law in January 2015 under the rule of the Al-Nusra Front – the precursor to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
The two women were reportedly executed on charges of prostitution and adultery.
"To confirm this conclusively, and given the sensitivity of verification in conflict zones according to the adopted methodology, ‘Verify-sy’ reached out to several parties in the new Syrian administration. A senior official confirmed that the man in the videos is indeed the current Minister of Justice, Shadi al-Waisi, and at that time, he was a judge," Verify-Sy reports.
The unnamed official in the HTS-led interim government added that the videos “documents the enforcement of the law at a specific time and place, where the procedures were carried out in accordance with the laws in effect at that time.” However, he also claimed that the footage “reflects a stage we have moved beyond, in light of the current legal and procedural transformations, which makes it inappropriate to generalize it or use it to describe the current stage.."
Waisi was appointed Justice Minister on 10 December by interim Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir. Upon taking office, Waisi announced plans to remove all female judges from the judiciary.
The videos emerged on the day the French and German foreign ministers met with Sharaa in Damascus.

Blinken Says He’s Not Worried That The World May Think He’s Backed A Genocide
In an interview with The New York Times, Blinken defended the Biden administration's foreign policy
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in an interview published by The New York Times on Saturday that he’s not worried that the world might view him as a genocide supporter for his role in supporting Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Blinken was asked, “Do you, Secretary Blinken, worry that perhaps you have been presiding over what the world will see as a genocide?”
He replied, “No. It’s not, first of all. Second, as to how the world sees it, I can’t fully answer to that. But everyone has to look at the facts and draw their own conclusions from those facts.”
The interview comes after several human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have concluded Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, a conclusion rejected by Blinken’s state department.
Blinken claimed to be concerned about the massive civilian casualties in Gaza but also defended US support for the slaughter, which he called Israel’s “just defense” from the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel. “We have been, and we remain fundamentally committed to Israel’s defense,” he said.
The secretary of state also defended the Biden administration’s actions related to the proxy war in Ukraine, which he framed as a success even though there’s no path to a Ukrainian military victory and hundreds of thousands have died in the conflict.
When asked if it was time to end the war, Blinken said the decision was up to Ukraine. “These are decisions for Ukrainians to make. They have to decide where their future is and how they want to get there,” he said.
However, in the early days of the war, the US and its allies discouraged Ukraine from signing a peace deal with Russia, and now Kyiv stands to lose much more territory than if it reached an agreement in 2022.
