UNRWA 'Preparing To Close Its Doors' In Gaza, West Bank As Israeli Law Takes Effect

The UN agency has been the target of an Israeli smear campaign, which has included coercing confessions of UNRWA employees into admitting ties with Hamas

UN officials who spoke with the New York Times (NYT) say that the leading agency providing humanitarian aid for Palestinians is “preparing” to end its operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

“It would be a massive impact on an already catastrophic situation. If that is what the Israeli intention is – to remove any ability for us to save lives – you have to question what is the thinking and what is the end goal?” UN resident and humanitarian coordinator Jamie McGoldrick told the NYT on 2 January.

UNRWA is a critical provider of staple necessities and essential services, relied on by thousands of Palestinians for their livelihood and basic needs. Since the start of the Israeli genocide in Gaza, UNRWA has been at the forefront of delivering aid to the displaced Palestinians, providing food, water, and medicine, as well as overseeing aid deliveries and running shelters.

UNRWA has provided fuel to the remaining hospitals and has been working to clear the accumulated waste, which is critical amidst the recent outbreak of diseases such as cholera.

“The world has abandoned us. We have nothing but the aid we get from UNRWA to survive,” Sami Abu Darweesh told the NYT.

FBI Says New Orleans Attacker Was An Army Veteran With An ISIS Flag

Fifteen people were killed and over 30 were injured in the car-ramming attack

The FBI said Wednesday that the man who drove a truck into a crowd in New Orleans to kill as many people as he could was a Texas-born US Army veteran who was carrying an ISIS flag.

The early morning New Year’s Day attack in the French Quarter killed at least 15 people and injured more than 30. The attacker, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed in a firefight with police after the crash.

The FBI said in a statement that weapons, including potential Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and an ISIS flag were found inside the vehicle. The FBI initially said Jabbar may have had help, but on Thursday, the agency said it believed he acted alone in an “act of terrorism.”

Also on Wednesday, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded at a Trump hotel in Las Vegas , killing the driver and injuring seven people nearby. Officials said the truck contained “fireworks-style mortars,” and the incident is being investigated as a potential terrorist attack. According to reports, both the Cybertruck and the Ford truck used in the attack in New Orleans were rented using the app Turo.

In regards to the New Orleans attack, the FBI said it was working to determine Jabbar’s “potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.” Sources told CNN that investigators have found “writings that the FBI believes support investigators’ view that the attack was inspired by ISIS.”

In comments on the attack, President Biden said, “The FBI also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he’s inspired by ISIS, expressing a desire to kill.”

A spokesman for the US Army said Jabbar was in the Army from 2007 to 2020. From 2007 to 2015, he served as a human resources specialist and information technology specialist on active duty and deployed to Afghanistan once during that time. From 2015 to 2020, Jabbar was in the reserves.

While the motive remains unclear, the attack comes after more than a year of the US backing Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, and support for Israel has historically been a motive for terrorist attacks against the US. A US official told ABC News that authorities believe Jabbar was radicalized in recent years, and the “Israel-Hamas war” may have exacerbated his radicalization.

The US has also significantly stepped up its bombing campaign against ISIS in Syria in recent months. On the other hand, the US helped Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of al-Qaeda that has a similar ideology to ISIS, take over Syria.

US Lays Groundwork For New Military Base In Northern Syria: Report

As clashes continue to rage between Washington and Ankara's proxies in north Syria, the US is heavily reinforcing its presence near the Turkish border

The US army mobilized at least 50 trucks transporting concrete fortifications to the town of Kobani (Ain al-Arab) in the eastern countryside of Aleppo on 2 January in preparation for building a new military base... The convoy was spotted...

Construction on Washington's new military base will reportedly begin on Friday....

The US illegally deployed troops in Syria in November 2015 to allegedly “prevent the return of ISIS.” This came just two months after Russia accepted the request of Damascus to provide air support to the Syrian army, Iranian special forces, and Hezbollah in their fight against ISIS forces who threatened to overrun the Syrian capital.

Since then, Washington has retained a stranglehold on Syria's largest oil and wheat fields in the northeast with the help of the SDF. The US also controls a massive 55-kilometer zone near the tri-border area with Iraq and Jordan.

Last month, the Pentagon confirmed that it has about 2,000 troops deployed inside Syria.

Washington's increased military presence in Syria's Kurdish-controlled north comes as SDF troops confront an intense offensive from the Syrian National Army (SNA) with air and artillery support from Turkiye.

On Thursday morning, the Turkish army and the SNA hit SDF positions in the eastern countryside of Ain Issa in Raqqah with heavy shelling and mortar fire. Close to 200 people have been killed since violent clashes broke out on 8 December between Washington and Ankara's proxies.

What US Mediation? 1000 Israeli Ceasefire Violations In Lebanon Go Unchecked

During a recent ceasefire committee meeting, Israeli officials denied any violations and argued there was no 60-day deadline for withdrawing their troops. Attending US officials did nothing – but they may have to act soon: Hezbollah vows 'resistance' against breaches once the truce expires.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has called out House leadership for including a bill as part of a proposed rules package designed to protect Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The rules package , which is set to be voted on Friday after the new House elects its speaker, includes a bill to sanction the International Criminal Court, which recently issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif.

“...how did a bill to protect Netanyahu make it into the House rules package to be voted on immediately after the Speaker vote? Where are our priorities?!”

The bill would impose sanctions “with respect to the International Criminal Court engaged in any effort to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute any protected person of the United States and its allies.”

The House passed a bill to sanction the ICC last year , but it was not taken up by the Senate. The US does have a law on the books that authorizes the use of military force against the Hague-based ICC to free any US or allied government officials or service members, nicknamed the Hague Invasion Act.

Rights Groups Sound Alarm Over 'Forced Disappearance' Of Gaza Hospital Director

Kamal Adwan Hospital’s Dr Hussam Abu Safia is being held at the Sde Teiman torture camp and is said to be under investigation for ‘Hamas ties’

Human rights organizations have raised concern over the fate of the director of north Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr Hussam Abu Safia after the Israeli army denied his recent detainment despite video and photo evidence, reports in Hebrew media, and testimonies of released prisoners.

“Despite clear evidence of Dr Abu Safia's arrest, the occupation is now denying its previous statements and rejecting the existence of evidence, including videos and photos it had previously published, as well as the testimonies of some detainees who were released,” the Palestinian Prisoners Club (PPC) said in a statement on 3 January.

The risks of his detainment are growing, the statement says, adding that he is but one of thousands who are “enduring the crime of enforced disappearance.”

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) urged the Israeli military to permit a lawyer to visit Abu Safia in detention. The Israeli army responded by saying that no evidence exists to confirm the hospital director's detainment.

Abu Safia was detained on 27 December in the latest of many violent Israeli army raids on north Gaza’s besieged and destroyed Kamal Adwan Hospital.

US Expands Biometric Technology In Airports Despite Privacy Concerns

Biometric systems promise efficiency at airports, but concerns over data security and transparency persist.

Biometric technology is being rolled out at US airports at an unprecedented pace, with plans to extend these systems to hundreds more locations in the coming years. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is driving a significant push toward facial recognition and other biometric tools, claiming improved efficiency and security. However, the expansion has sparked growing concerns, with privacy advocates and lawmakers voicing concerns about data security, transparency, and the potential for misuse of such technology.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has already implemented its Biometric Facial Comparison system at 238 airports, including 14 international locations. This includes all CBP Preclearance sites and several major departure hubs. CBP says its Biometric Exit program is rapidly gaining traction, with new airport partners joining monthly and positive feedback reported from passengers.

Meanwhile, the TSA has equipped nearly 84 airports with its next-generation Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) scanners, which incorporate facial recognition. This rollout is part of a broader effort to bring biometrics to over 400 airports nationwide. These advancements are detailed in a TSA fact sheet aimed at building public awareness of the initiative.

Opposition and Privacy Concerns

Despite assurances from TSA and CBP, critics remain skeptical. Some lawmakers, led by Senator Jeff Merkley, argue that the TSA has yet to justify the need for biometric systems when previous technologies already authenticated IDs effectively. Privacy advocates warn that the widespread use of facial recognition could set a dangerous precedent, normalizing surveillance and threatening individual freedoms.

The debate is closely tied to the federal REAL ID Act, introduced two decades ago to standardize identification requirements for air travel. As of now, many states have failed to fully implement REAL ID standards, and only a portion of Americans have acquired compliant credentials. Reports indicate that fewer than half of Ohio residents and just 32 percent of Kentuckians have updated their IDs, even as the May 7, 2025, deadline approaches.

Biometric Adoption on the Global Stage

Beyond the US, biometric systems are gaining momentum worldwide. India’s Digi Yatra program has attracted 9 million active users, adding 30,000 new downloads daily... Plans are underway to expand the program further, including international pilots scheduled for mid-2025.

While biometric technology offers alleged benefits, such as faster boarding and enhanced security, it also poses serious risks. Privacy advocates caution against unchecked implementation, especially since, one day, this form of check-in is likely to be mandatory.

French, German Officials Make First Visit To HTS-Ruled Syria

The visit comes as clashes, sectarian violence, and Israeli attacks plague Syria

French Foreign Minister Noel Barrot said on 3 January during a visit to Damascus that there is a “fragile” hope for stability and sovereignty in Syria after arriving in the country with his German counterpart Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

“Hope for a sovereign, stable, and peaceful Syria is a real hope, but it is fragile. France and Germany stand together with the Syrian people in all their diversity and spectrums,” Barrot said upon arrival, adding that Paris wishes to “promote a peaceful transitional process in Syria that serves the Syrians and regional stability.”

“Our visit to Damascus is a signal from the European Union about the possibility of starting a new political relationship with Syria ... Syrians have the opportunity to take the fate of their country into their own hands again after the end of a painful chapter of Assad's rule,” Baerbock said.

"We know the ideological affiliation of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and what it has done in the past, but we also hear and see the desire for moderation and understanding with other important parties. We came to Syria with an 'outstretched hand' and 'clear expectations' from the new administration, and the administration will be judged by its actions," she added.

The trip is the first high-level European visit to Syria in over 12 years, and comes nearly one month after the collapse of the Syrian government and the fall of Damascus to extremist groups.

Apple Settles $95M Class Action Over Siri Privacy Violations

Apple has agreed to a $95 million cash settlement to resolve a proposed class action lawsuit accusing the tech giant of breaching user privacy through its Siri voice assistant. The preliminary settlement, filed in a federal court in Oakland, California, awaits approval from US District Judge Jeffrey White.

The lawsuit alleged that Siri recorded private conversations inadvertently activated by users and disclosed these recordings to third parties, including advertisers.

Siri, like other voice assistants, responds to “hot words” such as “Hey, Siri,” which can unintentionally trigger recording. Plaintiffs claimed this led to targeted ads based on private discussions, citing examples such as ads for Air Jordan sneakers after casual mentions of the brands. One plaintiff also reported receiving ads for a surgical treatment brand after a private conversation with their doctor.

The lawsuit covers users of Siri-enabled devices, including iPhones and Apple Watches, from September 17, 2014, when the “Hey, Siri” feature was introduced, to December 31, 2024. Class members, estimated to number in the tens of millions, could receive up to $20 per eligible device.

Apple denied any wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement and did not immediately comment on the matter.

Similarly, the plaintiffs’ attorneys have yet to issue statements. From the $95 million settlement fund, attorneys may seek up to $28.5 million in legal fees and an additional $1.1 million for expenses.

....This lawsuit isn’t the only privacy-related legal battle involving voice assistants. A separate case against Google’s Voice Assistant is ongoing in a federal court in San Jose, California, within the same judicial district. The same law firms represent the plaintiffs in both lawsuits.

Saudi Arabia Ready To Take Part In 'Syria's Renaissance': HTS Official

Gulf and western nations have pledged total support to Syria following the rise of former ISIS and Al-Qaeda warlord Ahmad al-Sharaa

Syria's interim foreign minister in the de facto government, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, announced on 3 January that Saudi Arabia is ready to “participate in the renaissance of Syria and support its unity and territorial integrity.”

The co-founder of Al-Qaeda in Syria said he conveyed to Saudi officials Hayat Tahrir al-Sham's (HTS) “national vision of establishing a government based on partnership and efficiency that includes all Syrian components.”

Shibani and Syria's interim defense minister, Murhaf Abu Qasra, long-time commander of HTS's military wing, met with Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman in Riyadh on Thursday.

Following the visit, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan as saying that the kingdom is committed to “Syria's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity” while emphasizing efforts to “achieve security, stability, and prosperity for the Syrian people.”

Gulf and western nations have rushed to re-establish ties with Syria in the wake of the HTS-led coup that toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad and saw the rise to power of Ahmad al-Sharaa – formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani.

“Our visit to Damascus is a signal from the European Union about the possibility of starting a new political relationship with Syria ... Syrians have the opportunity to take the fate of their country into their own hands again after the end of a painful chapter of Assad's rule,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said following a meeting with Sharaa.

The diplomatic whirlwind comes as sectarian violence flares across the newly “liberated” nation. Since the fall of Damascus, extremists allied with HTS have carried out attacks and executions targeting Alawites, as well as vandalism of holy sites, including Churches and Christian cemeteries.

HTS-appointed officials have also implemented sweeping reforms to the previously secular nationwide curriculum, including significant amendments to religious and historical studies – namely, the removal of essential events in Syrian history...

Entire segments of Syrian history will also be scratched, including the period between the end of the Ottoman Empire and Shukri Quwaitli's election as president in 1943. The term “1973 Liberation War,” referring to the 1973 Arab–Israeli war, will be replaced with just “1973 war.
