'Revived' ISIS Killed Over 750 People In Nearly 500 Attacks In Syria Throughout 2024: Report

The past 12 months witnessed a marked spike in ISIS operations, with many being launched from US-occupied regions of Syria

Since the start of the year, ISIS fighters have killed around 753 people during 491 recorded operations in Syria, according to a report published by the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) on 29 December.

“ISIS continues executing almost-daily military operations and counter-attacks in areas controlled by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian desert, while ISIS cells are still able to exploit opportunities to create a security vacuum and carry out assassinations, which clearly indicates that the ‘Islamic State’ is still alive and kicking,” the SOHR report states.

These operations included ambushes, armed attacks, and bombings. They were concentrated in the Aleppo-Hama-Raqqa triangle, the eastern desert of Homs, and the deserts of Deir Ezzor and Raqqah governorates, where a total of 646 people were killed.

The report highlights that at least 78 of those were civilians – including women and children – while 568 were members of the disbanded Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

Furthermore, another 107 people were killed in areas controlled by the US-backed SDF in Deir Ezzor, Hasakah, Aleppo, and Raqqah...

Tel Aviv has signaled it plans to keep its occupation of south Lebanon past the 60-day time limit established by the truce deal

Lebanese MP Ihab Hamadeh warned on 1 January that Hezbollah has not been weakened and that the resistance will confront any Israeli violations against Lebanon following the end of a two-month ceasefire.

Hamadeh, who is a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc in parliament, told Al-Mayadeen that "if the occupation takes any steps against Lebanon from the eastern front due to its expansion in Syria, we will carry out our national duty."

Israel and Hezbollah fought a brutal 14-month war in which Israel sought to occupy land in south Lebanon and disarm the resistance. The war temporarily ended after both sides signed a ceasefire on 27 November.

Israel Offers Displaced Settlers 'Financial Compensation' To Return North Despite Lasting Security Concerns

Roughly 60,000 Israeli settlers have been displaced since the start of the war between Israel and Hezbollah in October 2023

The Israeli government has published a plan for the return of settlers displaced from northern Israel over a year ago due to the war with Hezbollah, Israel Hayom reported on 31 January, despite the continuing lack of security.

The plan calls for settlers to begin returning to their homes at the end of February when the 60-day ceasefire with Hezbollah comes to an end if the security situation allows.

The war between Israel and Hezbollah began on 8 October 2023, when Hezbollah opened the fighting on Israel's northern front in support of Hamas and Palestinians in Gaza. Some 60,000 Israeli settlers were evacuated from their homes in the settlements near the border due to Hezbollah rockets, missiles, and drones.

Israel escalated the war in September, launching a massive bombing campaign that killed almost 4,000 Lebanese, both Hezbollah fighters and civilians, and displaced over 1 million Lebanese from their homes in the south of the country. A ceasefire was reached on 27 November.

Though the ceasefire was declared five weeks ago, Israel Hayom notes that only about a quarter of Israeli settlers have returned to their homes in the north. Even fewer have returned home to the settlements next to the border fence. In Metula, only about 20 settlers have returned.

Biden Signs Bill Intended To Push Digital Id In Federal Agencies

At the tail end of the Biden-Harris administration, a bill designed to advance digital ID in federal agencies got pushed through the legal process.

The Congress last week passed the GSA Technology Accountability Act, and Biden signed it into law on Dec. 30.

Proponents hail the new law as a potential way to usher in “effective and inclusive” governance – but that will depend on the level of support it manages to garner going forward from both the public and private sector, and of course, the federal agencies themselves.

The law is about setting digital ID standards, and from there allowing for “efficient and secure” management of digital identity.

More than anything, the latter is sorely needed in order to get the public on side....

The bill – amending Title 40 of US Code – was first introduced in May as HR 7524 to address spending earmarked for, in this instance, information technology management.

The bill required the General Services Administration to report to Congress each year on projects funded by the Federal Citizen Services Fund and the Acquisition Services Fund, HR 7524’s description said.

Now, the gist of the bill that has just become law is interpreted as a stepping stone for “modernizing digital identity frameworks” as “the cornerstone of modern governance.”

The law’s main goal is said to be standardization and integration of digital identity standards as those are applicable to a host of federal agencies, in order to facilitate the creation of a single digital identity.

This, in turn, provides different agencies with a streamlined way of accessing information about users that range from public health “initiatives” to issues pertaining to “cybersecurity.”...

Online attacks by “malicious actors” from the category of those looking to make money off vulnerabilities, or exploit the wide-ranging field of “national security” are underlined in the act.

Ivory Coast Says French Troops To Leave Country After Decades

Ivory Coast is the latest West African nation to expel troops of former colonial power after Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Ivory Coast has announced that French troops will leave the country this month after a decades-long military presence, becoming the latest African nation to downscale military ties with its former coloniser.

In an end-of-year address to the nation on Tuesday, President Alassane Ouattara said the 43rd BIMA marine infantry battalion at Port-Bouet in Abidjan – where French troops were stationed – “will be handed over” to Ivory Coast’s armed forces as of January 2025.

“We can be proud of our army, whose modernisation is now effective. It is in this context that we have decided on the concerted and organised withdrawal of French forces” from Ivory Coast, Ouattara said.

France, whose colonial rule in West Africa ended in the 1960s, has nearly 1,000 soldiers in Ivory Coast, according to reports.

Ivory Coast is the latest West African nation to expel French troops after Mali , Burkina Faso and Niger . In November, within hours of each other, Senegal and Chad also announced the departure of French soldiers from their soil.

12/30 — SDF Claims Turkey Has Been Setting up Military Bases Inside Syria, near Manbij — Fighting Between Turkey, Syrian Kurds Escalates, At Least 31 Killed

Fighting has been raging off and on for weeks, but seems to be picking up intensity this weekend along the Syria-Turkey border, with Turkey and its affiliates fighting against the Kurdish SDF in and around Manbij. At least 31 combatants between the two sides have been killed since Sunday .

Turkey had been building up forces along the border for weeks, and has been talking up an offensive aimed at eliminating the Kurdish YPG, the largest faction within the SDF... fighting ..has plainly gotten more aggressive on both sides since then.

Turkey’s allies in the Free Syrian Army (FSA) have been attacking the SDF in several areas, with fighting around Manbij in the Aleppo Province, but also incidents reported in Raqqa Province and artillery strikes by Turkey against silos in the Hasakeh Province , causing substantial damage.

The SDF has carried out its own offensives, especially around Manbij and the nearby Tishreen Dam. The SDF claims that Turkey is setting up two military bases there, inside Syrian territory, and attacked and destroyed radar systems at those bases, along with at least one Turkish tank.

The SDF... saying it was aimed to stop those bases being established and to repel the invasion attempt. In addition to ground operations, the SDF also shelled the town of Abo Qalqak , southeast of Manbij.

State Department Is Sued For Withholding Records On Censorship Efforts

The Functional Government Initiative (FGI), a government watchdog, has filed a lawsuit against the State Department, seeking critical documents related to its controversial censorship activities. At the heart of the case is the now-disbanded Global Engagement Center (GEC) , an agency accused of using taxpayer dollars to suppress free speech and support efforts to blacklist media outlets.
