UN Accuses Israel Of Turning Gaza Hospitals Into 'Death Traps'

The report comes just days after the Israeli army violently evicted north Gaza's last functioning hospital before setting it on fire

The UN Human Rights Office issued a report on 31 December condemning Israeli attacks on Gaza hospitals, saying they had become "death traps."

The 23-page report documented various Israeli attacks on Gaza's hospitals and the destruction of the strip's health care system between October 2023 and July 2024.

"The destruction of the healthcare system in Gaza, and the extent of killing of patients, staff, and other civilians in these attacks, is a direct consequence of the disregard of international humanitarian and human rights law," the report said.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, said the Israeli military had shown "blatant disregard for international humanitarian and human rights law."

"As if the relentless bombing and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza were not enough, the one sanctuary where Palestinians should have felt safe, in fact, became a death trap," Turk said in a statement.

Dr. Abu Safia was then seen at Israel's notorious detention center, Sde Teiman, where Israeli forces regularly rape and torture detainees.

The Israeli military justifies its attacks on Gaza hospitals by claiming Hamas uses them as command centers for military operations. Israel claims the patients, staff, and displaced civilians it abducts are suspected militants.

However, the UN report alluded to such claims but said Israel had provided no evidence to substantiate them.

The report said Israel's attacks against hospitals and civilians in Gaza could constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Palestinian Authority Shuts Down Al-Jazeera In Occupied West Bank

Al-Jazeera is accused of broadcasting 'misleading and incendiary' reports of the PA's crackdown on the Palestinian resistance in Jenin

The Palestinian Authority (PA) announced on 1 January the suspension of Al-Jazeera's operations in the occupied Palestinian West Bank, citing alleged violations of Palestinian laws.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA stated that the decision resulted from Al-Jazeera's "manipulation, interference in internal affairs, and dissemination of misleading and incendiary reports."

The PA said the suspension was temporary, pending the network's compliance with legal regulations.

Al-Jazeera condemned the decision and linked it to a broader campaign against its journalists, including its correspondent Mohammed al-Atrash.

The decision follows the Qatari network's critical coverage of the PA's assault on the Palestinian resistance in the Jenin refugee camp.

'Revived' ISIS Killed Over 750 People In Nearly 500 Attacks In Syria Throughout 2024: Report

The past 12 months witnessed a marked spike in ISIS operations, with many being launched from US-occupied regions of Syria

Since the start of the year, ISIS fighters have killed around 753 people during 491 recorded operations in Syria, according to a report published by the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) on 29 December.

“ISIS continues executing almost-daily military operations and counter-attacks in areas controlled by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian desert, while ISIS cells are still able to exploit opportunities to create a security vacuum and carry out assassinations, which clearly indicates that the ‘Islamic State’ is still alive and kicking,” the SOHR report states.

These operations included ambushes, armed attacks, and bombings. They were concentrated in the Aleppo-Hama-Raqqa triangle, the eastern desert of Homs, and the deserts of Deir Ezzor and Raqqah governorates, where a total of 646 people were killed.

The report highlights that at least 78 of those were civilians – including women and children – while 568 were members of the disbanded Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

Furthermore, another 107 people were killed in areas controlled by the US-backed SDF in Deir Ezzor, Hasakah, Aleppo, and Raqqah...

Lebanese MP Warns Israel Will 'Taste Hezbollah's Wrath' If Ceasefire Violations Continue

Tel Aviv has signaled it plans to keep its occupation of south Lebanon past the 60-day time limit established by the truce deal

Lebanese MP Ihab Hamadeh warned on 1 January that Hezbollah has not been weakened and that the resistance will confront any Israeli violations against Lebanon following the end of a two-month ceasefire.

Hamadeh, who is a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc in parliament, told Al-Mayadeen that "if the occupation takes any steps against Lebanon from the eastern front due to its expansion in Syria, we will carry out our national duty."

Israel and Hezbollah fought a brutal 14-month war in which Israel sought to occupy land in south Lebanon and disarm the resistance. The war temporarily ended after both sides signed a ceasefire on 27 November.

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria two weeks later, Israeli troops occupied additional territory in Syria's Golan Heights, giving them access to strategic areas along the Lebanese border, including Mount Hermon...
