Seventh Palestinian Baby Freezes to Death as More Rain and Thunderstorms Loom

Nearly 1.6 million displaced Gazans living in makeshift shelters that offer little protection from rain and cold

A seventh Palestinian baby has frozen to death as more than a million displaced Gazans struggle to survive in freezing winter conditions, with more thunderstorms forecast to batter the besieged territory.

Most families in Gaza, displaced multiple times over the past year by the Israeli assault on the territory, are living in makeshift shelters that provide little protection against the cold, with humanitarian aid failing to meet even the most basic needs.

Jumaa al-Batran, one month old, died of hypothermia in a tent in Deir al-Balah on Monday, just a day after her twin brother Ali suffered the same fate, the British news agency Reuters reported.

Ali died at Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza, with doctors quoted by the Palestinian news agency Wafa attributing the death to freezing temperatures.

The twins are the sixth and seventh Palestinian babies to die of severe cold in Gaza within a week. Their father told Reuters he found Jumaa’s lifeless body “frozen like ice”.

The Palestinian Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall and thunderstorms across Gaza on New Year’s Eve, and temperatures are expected to remain cold to very cold.

Humanitarian agencies estimate that 1.6 million Gazans are living in makeshift shelters, with half a million in flood-prone areas. Most children eat only one meal a day, further reducing their ability to withstand the cold.

The war has displaced over two-thirds of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million, with many families forced to flee repeatedly as Israeli forces have expanded their operations in the north.

The UN relief agency for the Palestinians, Unrwa, said on Sunday that aid is nowhere near enough and a ceasefire is desperately needed to deliver food as a famine looms.

In addition to the cold, heavy rainfall in recent days flooded many camps, leaving families scrambling to repair their damaged shelters or move to areas that offer even less protection.

“The water seeped inside and onto the mattresses and my children’s clothes. Everything is soaked—the blankets, the pillows, everything,” Sabreen Abu Shanab told Reuters as she described her three children waking up drenched and freezing.

Gaza’s civil defence reported hundreds of distress calls from families whose makeshift tents have been flooded. “Our crews can only evacuate citizens from their damaged shelters to other places that are mostly unsuitable to shelter, and they remain in the open – under the rain and bitter cold,” it said on Telegram...

Palestinian authorities, meanwhile, announced on Monday that five more detainees from Gaza have been killed in Israeli prisons.

Over 80 Percent Of Gaza Displacement Tents Destroyed By Bitter Winter Conditions

The besieged population's suffering worsens in the Gaza Strip due to the harsh weather conditions that have so far led to the death of several displaced Palestinians and the destruction of tens of thousands of tents.

Gaza’s Government Media Office said in a statement on 30 December that the number of deaths from the extreme weather conditions has reached seven, adding that the toll is expected to increase. One of the several victims of the freezing weather was an infant, according to medical sources cited by WAFA news agency.

“We have warned more than once of the danger of the arrival of depressions, winter, and frost waves, coinciding with the tragic reality experienced by our people, who are being subjected to killing, genocide, and the destruction of homes and vital sectors,” the media office's statement read.

The media office announced a day earlier that around 110,000 tents out of 135,000 are “worn out” and “unfit” for displaced Palestinians.

By late November, over 80 percent of Gaza’s displacement tents had already been severely affected by the weather and the lack of essential facilities to deal with it.

Syria's New Leadership Receives Ukrainian FM In Damascus

Ukraine’s top diplomat said during meetings with HTS-led authorities in Syria that ‘expelling Russia’ from the country will bring security to the region

Syria’s de facto ruler Ahmad al-Sharaa, better known as former Al-Qaeda chief Abu Mohammad al-Julani, and the country’s new Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani hosted Ukraine’s top diplomat in the capital, Damascus, on 30 December.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha arrived in the capital at the head of a high-level delegation, which included President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s special envoy.

“We seek to cooperate with the new Syrian administration in several areas. We share with Syria the suffering from unjust regimes,” Sybiha was quoted as saying. “We are ready to help Syria in collecting evidence and investigating the crimes of the former regime and Russia.”

“Russia and Assad regime are partners in committing atrocities in Syria. We believe that relations between our two countries will witness great development,” he added.

The foreign minister went on to say, “If you can expel the Russians from your lands, you will ensure your security and the security of neighboring countries.”

Shaybani said during the meeting that his country is “turning the page” on the era of the former government of Bashar al-Assad, stressing that there will be a “strategic partnership” between Damascus and Kiev.

Sharaa’s organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as the Nusra Front (Al-Qaeda's offshoot in Syria), appointed a transitional authority following the collapse of the Syrian army and the fall of Damascus on 8 December after an 11-day shock offensive that took the region by surprise.

Over the past few years, Ukraine has provided crucial support to HTS and other extremist factions under its command – who were based in Syria’s northern Idlib governorate before the assault that ended the Assad government.

HTS militants and fighters from ISIS and other extremist groups have also been deployed in Ukraine to fight Russian forces.

Before the launch of the offensive on 27 November, Ukrainian drone experts had been training and equipping extremist militants in Idlib.

The Russian military intervened in Syria in 2015 in support of Assad’s government, helping the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) turn the tide against several groups who had taken over large swathes of the country – including the Nusra Front, which became HTS.

Biden Administration Announces Nearly $6 Billion In New Ukraine Aid

Ukraine is receiving about $2.5 billion in military aid and $3.4 billion in 'budget support,' which funds government salaries and services

The Biden administration on Monday announced nearly $6 billion in new aid for Ukraine as it’s determined to escalate the proxy war as much as possible before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated on January 20, 2025.

The aid includes $3.4 billion in “direct budget support,” a form of assistance meant to pay for Ukrainian government services, salaries, pensions, and other types of spending. It has also been used to subsidize Ukrainian small businesses and farmers.

“Economic assistance from the United States and our allies is crucial for Ukraine’s ability to defend its sovereignty and achieve a just peace by maintaining the critical government services that underpin its brave fight,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

Yellen said the $3.4 billion was the last remaining funds for budgetary aid from the 2024 Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, which was packed into the $95 billion foreign military aid bill President Biden signed into law back in April.

Ukraine is also receiving nearly $2.5 billion in military aid from the US, which includes $1.22 billion from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, a program that allows the US to purchase weapons for Ukraine. The remaining military aid is in the form of the Presidential Drawdown Authority, which enables President Biden to ship weapons directly from US military stockpiles.

The Biden administration is dumping more weapons into Ukraine even though there’s no path to a Ukrainian victory on the battlefield as Russian forces continue to make gains in the Donbas and Ukraine’s invading force in Kursk is being pushed out. Biden officials are determined to keep the war going and are even pressuring Ukraine to begin conscripting 18-year-olds.

According to the Pentagon, the new military aid includes:

- Munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS)
- HAWK air defense munitions
- Stinger missiles
- Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (c-UAS) munitions
- Ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS)
- 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition
- Air-to-ground munitions
- High-speed Anti-radiation missiles (HARMs)
- Unmanned Aerials Systems (UAS)
- Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems
- Tube-launched, Optically guided, Wire-tracked (TOW) missiles
- Small arms and ammunition and grenades
- Demolitions equipment and munitions
- Secure communications equipment
- Commercial satellite imagery services
- Medical equipment
- Clothing and individual equipment
- Spare parts, maintenance and sustainment support, ancillary equipment, services, training, and transportation

In recent months, President Biden signed off on several significant escalations in the proxy war, including supporting long-range strikes on Russian territory and the provision of widely banned anti-personnel mines to Ukraine.

Moscow Warns US, UK Preparing 'ISIS Attacks' On Airbases In Syria

Washington has supported ISIS in the past and still uses the group's existence as a pretext to occupy northeast Syria

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (FIS) warned on 28 December that the US and UK are planning to use ISIS to attack Russian military bases in Syria to further destabilize the country after the fall of the Syrian government.

Russian intelligence confirmed that ISIS field commanders had obtained attack drones to carry out these attacks.

The FIS stressed that President Joe Biden's outgoing government aims to sew chaos in West Asia "to ensure their long-term dominance in the region."

But this is "impeded by the Russian military presence on the Mediterranean coast of Syria, which remains an important factor in regional stability, which necessitated assigning ISIS to carry out the mission," the FIS said.

Russia maintains an air base near the coastal city of Latakia and a naval base near the coastal city of Tartus. The presence of Russian forces in Syria is now in question after the fall of the Syrian government led by Bashar al-Assad, a close Russian ally, on 8 December.

Normalizing the issue of the hostages means leaving them for 14 months to be tormented and to die in Hamas' tunnels. It means torpedoing any deal or chance of saving them and bringing them home, loftily proclaiming "our commitment to the hostages" while wearing a yellow ribbon.

This is what Benjamin Netanyahu and his lackeys are doing. Anyone who cooperates with them, kowtows to them, treats them with undue politeness or agrees to be a prop in their manipulations and delay tactics is part of this normalization – even if fate has made them a relative of one of the hostages.

Yizhar Lifshitz is the son of Yocheved Lifshitz, who returned from captivity last November in the first and only hostage deal, and Oded Lifshitz, who has not returned. In an interview with Haaretz published this week, Yizhar said he goes to Knesset committee sessions every week, adding, "there is a normalization of madness. If we're not there … it will be easier for [the politicians] to just keep on like this. Our job is to be a bone in their craw, to keep the issue on the agenda."

...A bone in the craw is Einav Zangauker, the mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, who cries out in public squares that Netanyahu is abandoning her son to preserve his coalition. Last week, she told cabinet member Zeev Elkin that if her son returns in a coffin or body bag, she will take the law into her own hands. A bone in the craw is Eli Albag, the father of spotter Liri Albag, who told Netanyahu that the only thing that will be named after him is cemeteries. A bone in the craw is Maayan Sherman, who resolutely blamed the government and the military for killing her hostage son, Ron, in an airstrike on the tunnel he was in.
