Civilians who were either wounded or carrying white flags were executed on the spot by Israeli army forces during the hospital raid

A new report by the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has revealed the shocking conduct of Israeli army forces, including executions and sexual assault, during their recent storming of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip’s Beit Lahia.

According to testimonies collected by the human rights monitor, Israel’s latest storming of the north Gaza hospital included deliberate killings and field executions, and sexual and physical assaults on women, including medical staff members and displaced civilians.

“These included detonating booby-trapped robots near several inhabited homes, causing their collapse and killing civilians inside. The crimes also involved Israeli soldiers executing civilians on the spot, some of whom were wounded, while others carried white flags,” according to the eyewitness accounts cited in the report.

Dozens of women and girls were detained and subjected to “severe abuse,” it adds. “This included beating them and forcing them to remove their hijabs and clothing.”

Those in and around the hospital were forced to flee outside northern Gaza at gunpoint. Dozens of people were abducted by Israeli forces during the raid, including Kamal Adwan Hospital director Hussam Abu Safia.

Germany Uses Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack To Justify Push For Biometric Surveillance Expansion

Germany’s outgoing authorities appear to be using a deadly Christmas market attack, perpetrated by a Saudi national in the town of Magdeburg, to push for more surveillance, including by introducing new systems based on biometrics.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser , who has repeatedly found herself at the center of censorship and policy controversies , is the one behind the proposal to give law enforcement new powers.

However, this can be seen as a move to appease the critics of the country’s security and intelligence capabilities, overseen during the past three years by the ruling coalition of which Faeser’s party was a member, and which recently collapsed.

With federal elections scheduled for February, the move to quickly change security-related legislation can also be a useful campaign tool, and this might be the reason why some major parties now in competition with Faeser’s Social Democrats signaled they do not support the proposal.

One of the members of the coalition still technically in power, the Free Democratic Party (FDP), has come out against the idea and, in fact, according to reports, has “blocked” it.

Faeser’s campaign-time proposal comes in the context of her own accountability being questioned by the opposition in the wake of the attack since it has been confirmed that the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees during the past year received a warning about the suspected attacker, but apparently ignored it.

Homelessness Hit Record High This Year Amid Affordable Housing Shortage

Homelessness in the U.S. hit the highest level on record this year as the affordable housing crisis intensifies, federal regulators said Friday.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) tallied more than 770,000 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January, an 18 percent increase from 2023 that is likely an undercount.

Families with children experiencing homelessness jumped 39 percent, the largest increase on record, according to HUD data. Nearly 150,000 children were experiencing homelessness, a 33 percent increase from 2023.

Veterans were the only population where homelessness continued to decline, down 8 percent from 2023. The number of veterans experiencing homelessness has fallen 55 percent since HUD started collecting data on veteran homelessness in 2009.

Black people continue to be overrepresented among the homeless population: around 32 percent of people experiencing homelessness are Black despite making up only 12 percent of the U.S. population, according to HUD, which also found that the share of homeless people who identify as Black decreased from 37 percent in 2023.

The latest surge follows a 12 percent increase in homelessness in 2023 amid rising rents and a decline in pandemic assistance.

...The cost of buying a home hit an all-time high earlier this year, with advocates and policymakers alike citing a steep shortage in housing and even fewer affordable homes.

The U.S. housing shortage ballooned to 4.5 million homes in 2022 from 4.3 million in 2021, according to a June report from the real estate marketplace Zillow. The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) estimates the U.S. is short 7.3 million homes that are affordable and available to low-income individuals.

High Level Iraqi Delegation Makes First Visit To Syria Since Turkish-Backed Coup

Baghdad has deployed anti-terror forces to its border with Iraq to prevent extremist armed groups allied with HTS from infiltrating the country

The head of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS), Hamid al-Shatri, led a high-level delegation to the Syrian capital, Damascus, on 26 December for talks with de facto government authorities from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

According to informed sources who spoke with the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the discussions “were security-related and focused on related files.”

“The Iraqi delegation discussed with the new Syrian administration border protection and cooperation in preventing the return of ISIS … as well as protecting prisons that house ISIS gangs inside Syrian territory,” INA reported, adding that the delegation from Baghdad “also presented Iraq's visions and requests regarding respecting minorities and holy shrines.”

According to a senior member of the State of Law Coalition, a Shia-majority political party allied with the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), Baghdad's decision to send an official delegation to Syria and engage with the de facto authorities came “under pressure from both the United States and Gulf states.”

“[Iraqi] Prime Minister [Mohammed Shia al-] Sudani only took this step after consulting and obtaining approval from political blocs and parties, particularly from the Shia Coordination Framework and the State of Law Coalition. While there was support for the visit, external pressures played a significant role in the decision,” Lawmaker Issam al-Kreiti told Shafaq News.

In a detailed investigation, the NYTimes conducted a thorough review and analysis of the Israeli military’s conduct throughout the Gaza war following the Hamas-led October 7 attack, including interviews with more than 100 Israeli officials and soldiers, as well as the examination of dozens of military records and documents. The findings confirmed a pattern of behavior that was quite horrifically unique to this conflict and directly resulted in mass civilian casualties, which the IDF would not have tolerated in previous conflicts with Gaza according to its own established rules of engagement.

Here are some of the most noteworthy findings in the NYT report:

1. IDF mid-level commanders were given the authority to order strikes without needing the approval of higher-level officers and senior command staff.

2. The number of noncombatant casualties tolerated per strike was substantially increased, often to 20 and in some cases to 100, with the actual number varying based on the target’s value and munitions selected, some of which were unnecessarily chosen to be of a higher kinetic footprint.

3. The IDF was instructed to go after low-level Hamas fighters and strike them in their homes, seemingly with little to no regard for what happened to their families or neighbors.

4. The IDF Weakened standards, protocols, and safeguards to protect noncombatants, failed to conduct post-strike reviews to assess damage to uninvolved civilians, and ignored warnings from within IDF ranks and senior US military officials about failings.

5. The number of targets was vastly expanded, which meant the vetted set of targets from the “target banks” was used up quickly, and the IDF had to turn to either old or unreliable intelligence to keep the targeting chain going.

6. Artificial intelligence was used to predict harm to civilians and locate prospective targets, reducing significant time spent on each component of the intelligence collection, analysis, and targeting cycles to statistical models and algorithms that were unreliable at best, arbitrary and imprecise at worst.

7. Although monitoring/supervising IDF officers had to approve strike packages based on a conclusion that the cost to noncombatants’ lives is proportional to the military value of the target, they exercised significant discretion, which created inconsistencies in how the IDF’s own standards were carried out, killing many more civilians in the process.

8. The shock, anger, and resentment due to the October 7 massacre caused many IDF officers to become less stringent about adhering to military protocol despite the efforts of some commanders to maintain standards

9. The definition of a military target, including those targets deemed permissible to attack, was expanded; higher-ups' approval was only necessary when targets were close to sensitive civilian sites with a large number of noncombatants, and in the early weeks of the war, strikes on targets in Gaza could endanger up to 500 civilians each day, an order that mid-ranking officers likely misconstrued as a daily quota to reach rather than a limit

10. The use of advanced artificial intelligence systems and databases such as “Lavender” and “Gospel,” which were previously reported on in +972 Magazine, accelerated target acquisition, sometimes arbitrarily and expediently, increasing the likelihood of mistakes, rubber-stamping cycles, and lags between intelligence analyses and actual strikes that allowed some targets to escape while harming civilians.
