Israel May Flood Gaza Tunnels to Flush Out Hamas: Report

Hamas continues to hold Israeli captives in its extensive tunnel network under the besieged enclave

Israel has assembled a large system of pumps that may be used to flood tunnels used by Hamas under the Gaza strip in a bid to drive out itst fighters, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on 5 December.

Citing US officials, the WSJ reported that in mid-November the Israel army completed the set-up of at least five pumps about a mile north of the Al-Shati refugee camp on the Gaza coast. The pumps, which can move thousands of cubic meters of water per hour, will allegedly be used to flood the tunnels within the coming weeks.

It was not clear whether Israel would consider using the pumps before all captives held by Hamas in the besieged enclave were released. Hamas has previously said it has hidden the captives it took during its 7 October surprise attack in "safe places and tunnels."

Israel Consider ‘Naval Task Force’ In Red Sea

The idea comes as a response to the recent threat posed to Israeli shipping by Yemen’s Armed Forces and Ansarallah resistance movement

The US and its allies, including Israel, are considering the establishment of a “naval taskforce” in the Red Sea in response to the recent maritime threat posed to Israeli shipping by Yemen’s Ansarallah resistance movement.

According to Hebrew media reports, Israel has approached several countries, including the UK and Japan, to discuss the formation of a multi-national naval force aimed at protecting shipping in the Bab al-Mandab strait.

The White House also announced on 4 December that it may form such a force to escort commercial ships in the Red Sea.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Washington has been discussing the idea with its allies, although nothing is yet set in stone.

Sullivan referred to the idea of forming a task force as the “natural response” to the recent incidents.

“We are in talks with other countries about a maritime task force of sorts involving the ships from partner nations alongside the United States in ensuring safe passage,” he said.

In solidarity with the Palestinian resistance, Yemen’s Armed Forces and Ansarallah resistance movement carried out several maritime operations against Israeli and Israeli-linked vessels at sea.

The Yemeni resistance seized the Israeli-owned Galaxy Leader vessel in the Red Sea on 19 November, taking it back to Yemen along with its crew.

On 25 November, Sanaa’s forces launched a drone strike on the Kalandra ship, owned by Israeli company ZIM, in the Indian Ocean.

Ansarallah drones and missiles also targeted two Israeli ships in the Red Sea on 3 December.

“The Yemeni armed forces continue to prevent Israeli ships from navigating the Red Sea (and the Gulf of Aden) until the Israeli aggression against our steadfast brothers in the Gaza Strip stops,” Yemeni army spokesman Yahya Saree said on Sunday.

“The Yemeni armed forces renew their warning to all Israeli ships or those associated with Israelis that they will become a legitimate target if they violate what is stated in this statement.”

Saudi Arabia Says OPEC+ Cuts Can 'Absolutely' Stretch Into 2024

The bloc of oil-producing giants has maintained oil production cuts for nearly a year and a half to stem the damage caused to energy markets by western sanctions on Russia

Massive oil production cuts implemented by the OPEC+ group of nations can “absolutely” stretch past the first quarter of 2024, according to Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.

His comments come less than a week after the bloc of oil-producing giants held a virtual meeting in which they unanimously agreed to voluntary output cuts totaling about 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd)

“I honestly believe that 2.2 million will overcome even the usual inventory build that usually happens in the first quarter. There are already signs that demand is improving," the Saudi official told Bloomberg in an interview in Riyadh on Monday.

The cuts for the first half of 2024 are set at 2.2 million barrels daily, equal to about 2 percent of global supply. Currently, the OPEC+ output equals some 43 million bpd, which already reflects cuts of about 5 million bpd to stabilize the market.

Nevada - Las Vegas Shooting Suspect Dead, At Least 3 Injured At Unlv, Police Say —

Las Vegas police on Wednesday said there appear to be multiple victims in a shooting on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. Police said the suspect was dead.

"The suspect has been located and is deceased," the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department wrote on social media, after earlier saying, "The suspect is contained. This is an active investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and watch for responding emergency units."

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Wednesday afternoon that there were at least three victims and that the number could change.

"Right now, we know there are 3 victims, but unknown extent of the injuries. That number could change. We will update you when we know more," McMahill wrote on social media.

The university asked people to continue to shelter in place as police evacuated buildings one at a time. "Police Services continues to respond and clear buildings systematically," the university wrote on social media

Stock Market Bets Suggest Foreknowledge Of 7 October Attack

Unusual short selling activity allowed investors to profit from the Hamas attack on Israel, just as investors profited by placing unusual bets before the 9/11 attacks

Unknown investors placed unusually large bets anticipating a drop in Israel’s stock market just days before 7 October, indicating foreknowledge of the surprise Hamas attack many now view as “Israel’s 9/11,” a new report from two prominent US legal scholars shows.

Robert J. Jackson, Jr. of New York University and Joshua Mitts of Columbia University issued a report on 3 December documenting a significant spike in short selling in the principal Israeli-company ETF days before 7 October.

Short selling allows investors to sell shares borrowed from other investors, in hopes of repurchasing the shares at lower price in the future. The investor then returns the borrowed shares and profits from the difference in price.

The report states that, “days before the attack, traders appeared to anticipate the events to come: on October 2, short interest in the MSCI Israel Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) suddenly, and significantly, spiked. And just before the attack, short selling of Israeli securities on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange increased dramatically.”

The report states further that, “The short selling that day far exceeded the short selling that occurred during numerous other periods of crisis, including the recession following the financial crisis, the 2014 Israel-Gaza war, and the COVID19 pandemic.”

The report’s findings suggest the traders placing these bets were informed about the coming attacks and successfully profited from them.

“For one Israeli company alone, 4.43 million new shares sold short over the September 14 to October 5 period yielded profits (or approximates avoided losses) of 3.2 billion NIS (roughly $860 million) on that additional short selling,” the report explained further.

Although the scholars observed no increase in shorting of Israeli companies on US stock exchanges, they did identify “a sharp and unusual increase, just before the attacks, in trading in risky short-dated options on these companies expiring just after the attacks.”...

Many analysts have struggled to explain how Israel’s vaunted intelligence services failed to predict the surprise Hamas attack, in which 1,200 Israelis were killed and 240 taken captive to Gaza.

Many suggest that the decision to launch the attack was a tightly guarded secret, and that the leader of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammad Deif, did not notify even members of the Hamas political bureau living outside Gaza...

Similar activity in the options markets before 11 September 2001 suggests investor foreknowledge of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and Pentagon in Washington, D.C. as well.

Much of the attention focused on the trading in the days leading up to 11 September in options written on American Airlines (AMR) and United Airlines (UAL), the two companies whose planes were hijacked and crashed by the terrorists.

University of Chicago finance professor George Constantinides said that the option market trading to profit from a fall in the stock price of both AMR and UAL was “so striking that it’s hard to attribute it to chance. So something is definitely going on.”
