Centcom Chief Discusses ‘Anti-ISIS Efforts’ In Iraq, Syria Visit

Iraqi resistance faction, Al-Nujaba Movement, has warned of a Turkish and western-led plot to destabilize Iraq in the aftermath of Syria’s fall

CENTCOM announced on 10 December that its commander, General Michael Kurilla, visited Iraq and Syria and met with US military commanders, Iraqi officials, and the representatives of the Washington-backed Kurdish militia – the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The general “visited US military commanders and servicemembers, as well as our Defeat-ISIS partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces, at several bases in Syria,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

“[Kurilla] received a firsthand assessment of force protection measures, the rapidly evolving situation, and ongoing efforts to prevent ISIS from exploiting the current situation. USCENTCOM remains committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS,” the statement added.

In Baghdad, Kurilla met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and several other Iraqi military officials..

🚨🚨OpenAI Whistleblower Found Dead in San Francisco Apartment — TechCrunch

A former OpenAI employee, Suchir Balaji, was recently found dead in his San Francisco apartment, according to the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. In October, the 26-year-old AI researcher raised concerns about OpenAI breaking copyright law when he was interviewed by The New York Times.

“The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) has identified the decedent as Suchir Balaji, 26, of San Francisco. The manner of death has been determined to be suicide,” said a spokesperson in a statement to TechCrunch. “The OCME has notified the next-of-kin and has no further comment or reports for publication at this time.”

After nearly four years working at OpenAI, Balaji quit the company when he realized the technology would bring more harm than good to society, he told The New York Times. Balaji’s main concern was the way OpenAI allegedly used copyright data, and he believed its practices were damaging to the internet.

...Balaji was found dead in his Buchanan Street apartment on November 26, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Police were reportedly called to his residence in the city’s Lower Haight district to perform a wellness check on the former OpenAI researcher.

Trump Transition Team Considering Strikes On Iran

The incoming administration is debating if it should attack Iranian nuclear facilities

Strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities are being seriously considered within the Donald Trump transition team, according to the Wall Street Journal . While there is no proof Tehran is trying to make a nuclear weapon, Washington and Tel Aviv are threatening to attack Iran’s nuclear energy infrastructure.

“The military-strike option against nuclear facilities is now under more serious review by some members of his transition team,” the WSJ explained. “Iran’s weakened regional position and recent revelations of Tehran’s burgeoning nuclear work have turbocharged sensitive internal discussions, transition officials said.”

According to WSJ , President-elect Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have recently discussed potentially attacking Iran. “Trump has told Netanyahu in recent calls that he is concerned about an Iranian nuclear breakout on his watch.” The report continues, “The president-elect wants plans that stop short of igniting a new war, particularly one that could pull in the US military.”

The sources explained that the administration is considering two options. The first is bolstering American military presence in the Middle East while providing Israel with the ability to destroy Iranian nuclear sites without US assistance. The other option calls for American threats to force Tehran to make concessions at the negotiation table.

Whichever option Trump chooses, he is also expected to increase sanctions on Iran given his belief that he must economically cripple Tehran.

US Lawmakers Urge White House To Enact 'Syria Sanctions Relief': Report

As HTS and other Turkish-backed extremists consolidate power in Syria, Washington and its allies are looking for ways to remove the former ISIS and Al-Qaeda factions from their terrorism blacklists

Two members of the US Congress are urging the White House to ease “some sanctions” on Syria to help its economy in the wake of the takeover of the country by extremist armed groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

According to the letter reviewed by Reuters, Republican Representative Joe Wilson, who chairs the US House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, and Democratic Representative Brendan Boyle, who chairs the Free Syria Caucus, say that Washington needs to “suspend” part of a wide range of economic sanctions implemented under the Caesar Act to “build goodwill” with the extremists in power.

“A deliberate and phased approach is required to unwind sanctions and export controls against Syria,” the letter by Wilson and Boyle reportedly says, adding that the gesture could “incentivize the transitional government's compliance with international norms.”

Sources within HTS told Reuters on Tuesday that the UN-designated terrorist organization is “in touch” with officials in Washington to lift parts of the Caesar Act sanctions. “All of the obstacles facing the Syrian people and their future should be removed,” the British outlet cites its sources as saying.

In 2019, Washington enacted the Syria-specific Caesar Act, granting the US authority to impose sanctions on anyone - regardless of nationality - who conducts business with Syria, participates in infrastructure and energy projects, provides support to the Syrian government, or supplies goods or services to the Syrian military.

Three Men Accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of Rape and Sexual Assault in Separate Lawsuits Filed Thursday That Allege the Rap Impresario Plied Them With Doctored Drinks and Then Attacked Them While They Were Unconscious — NBC

Man alleges Sean Combs drugged and raped him during a meeting at a New York hotel

He says in an exclusive interview that his longtime employer attacked him while he was unconscious. He is one of three men who sued Combs on Thursday.

The lawsuits, filed anonymously in New York state Supreme Court by lawyer Thomas Giuffra, involve incidents alleged to have happened from 2019 to 2022. All allege that Combs raped and sexually assaulted them.

One of the men, a longtime employee of Combs, told NBC News that he was raped in a New York hotel where he met Combs to discuss a “substantial amount of money” he was owed from his off-the-books job.

The man said that he worked for Combs from 2006 to 2018 running errands and that while they weren’t “buddy, buddy,” he also didn’t expect to be victimized when he met with him in early 2020. But inside the room, the man said, Combs served him a drink, and in “two minutes, I start to feel, like, just very tired, very sleepy.”

When he came to, he said, Combs was raping him, and when he tried to stop him, he said, Combs told him: “I’m almost done.”

“The phrase that just rattles in my brain all the time is ‘I’m almost done,'” he said. “Just stop, just stop moving. I’m almost finished. Like, I’m almost done.”

Giuffra told NBC News that the way the men allege Combs went after them was “very consistent, frighteningly consistent, exactly consistent. He would hit them with the drinks, knock them out.”

And when they woke up, “he’d be raping them,” Giuffra said.

The new complaints are the latest in a wave of lawsuits filed against Combs in recent months — all with the complainants withholding their names — accusing him of assault and rape under similar circumstances going back to the 1990s. Combs has been behind bars since September...

HTS Officials Order Palestinian Resistance Factions To Disarm, Close Bases In Syria: Report

The new rulers in Damascus are taking actions to prevent the Palestinians from defending themselves or resisting Israel

Representatives from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the new ruling extremist organization in Damascus, informed the representatives of the Palestinian factions in Syria they would no longer be allowed to possess any weapons, training camps, or military headquarters, Ibrahim Amin of Al-Akhbar reported on 13 December.

Amin further reports that the factions must dissolve their military formations as soon as possible in exchange for political and charitable work under the roof of the new Syrian state.

Palestinian factions, including Fatah, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), the Saiqa, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) Martyr Ali Aswad Brigad, have had a presence in Syria as guests of the government for decades.

A source in the PFLP-GC revealed to Erem News that the factions were informed of the decision in meeting headed by Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani, in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in the capital, Damascus.

Palestinians came to Syria as refugees during the 1948 Nakba. That year, pre-state Zionist militias ethnically cleansed some 750,000 Palestinians from the land that became the state of Israel, making them refugees in neighboring countries.

'Syria Will Not Engage In Conflict With Israel': De-Facto Ruler Makes First Comments On Israeli Attacks

The former ISIS and Al-Qaeda commander said the Turkish and US-backed coup in Syria was 'a victory over the dangerous Iranian political project' in West Asia

Syria's de-facto new ruler and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on 14 December addressed for the first time Israel's numerous violations of Syrian territory and sovereignty.

"We are not about to engage in a conflict with Israel," Sharaa – who recently shed his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani – said in an interview on Syrian TV, pointing to “Syria's weakened state.”

The former deputy commander of ISIS and co-founder of Al-Qaeda in Syria added that Israel's “arguments” for attacking the country “no longer exist.” “Hezbollah and Iran are no more,” he said.

Haaretz: A New Low for Netanyahu: He Tells Israelis the Failures of Oct. 7 Will Never Be Investigated

The Israeli prime minister's fear of what a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 massacre could find out means he will never allow one to be formed, despite overwhelming public demand for an investigation

The massive failures of October 7, 2023 – the day on which Israel's lines of defense collapsed, the country's borders were breached, approximately 1,200 Israelis were killed and some 240 people kidnapped – will never be properly investigated. That's the most important headline to emerge from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's press conference on Monday night.

Most of the 45-minute event was a narcissistic performance in which Netanyahu glorified himself and attacked Israel's courts, police and state prosecution for daring to put him on trial and investigate the alleged crimes of his top aides....

Netanyahu convened the press conference in order to viciously go after the judicial system, ahead of the first day of his testimony and questioning in his corruption trial. But nothing he said about the subject was new, or newsworthy. It was the same set of lies, spin and political talking points we've been hearing from him and his supporters for years.

Instead, the biggest piece of news arrived toward the end of the press conference when a reporter asked him when he will finally create a state commission of inquiry into the failures of October 7.

In Israel, a commission of inquiry is the most powerful entity that can be set up to investigate failures and disasters that involve agencies of the state. Sixteen such commissions have been established so far... This law gives the government the authority to set up a commission of inquiry whenever it identifies "an issue that is of vital public importance and requires an investigation."...

The most famous was the Agranat Commission, led by retired Justice Aharon Agranat, which was established in November 1973 to investigate the failings of that year's Yom Kippur War. It led, five months later, to the resignation of then-Prime Minister Golda Meir.

Israel is debating whether or not to respond to Kurdish requests for aid, facing the ‘dilemma’ of a backlash from Ankara

Kurdish militants in northern Syria have been reaching out to Israel for “assistance” after their villages were stormed by extremist groups who were involved in the assault that resulted in the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, according to a 12 December report by Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom.

“Senior Kurdish militia figures are turning to Israel for urgent help, in light of the seizure of territories from them by Islamist militias backed by Turkiye,” the report said.

The daily added that the Israeli security establishment is deliberating on whether or not it should respond to these Kurdish requests for aid, highlighting there has been ongoing communication between Tel Aviv and the Kurds, which has increased since Assad’s government fell on 8 December.

Yet Israel faces a “dilemma,” given the potential backlash from Turkiye. The main Kurdish group operating in Syria is the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which helps the US oversee its occupation of the country.

It is predominantly made up of forces from the Peoples Protection Unit (YPG) – the Syrian branch of Ankara’s longtime rival, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
