US Considering Removing HTS From Terror List After Syria Takeover
US officials say they're in contact with the al-Qaeda-linked group
The US is considering removing the al-Qaeda offshoot Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the list of US-designated terror organizations after the group led the offensive that ousted former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The Washington Post reported that US officials are in contact with HTS and other groups involved in the offensive. One US official said the Biden administration was doing a “real-time assessment” on whether or not HTS should be removed from the list of foreign terrorist organizations.
POLITICO reported there is a “furious debate” among US officials about the issue. “There is a huge scramble to see if, and how, and when we can delist HTS,” one official said.
HTS’s leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, also has a $10 million US bounty on his head. Middle East Eye reported that US officials are debating the “merit” of keeping the bounty in place. An Arab official told the outlet that the debate has divided the Biden administration.
Julani was the founder of al-Nusra Front, the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria. In 2016, Julani attempted to rebrand al-Nusra by changing its name and claiming to cut ties with al-Qaeda. In 2017, HTS was formed by merging al-Nusra and several other Islamist groups.

The suspect nabbed in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is an anti-capitalist Ivy League grad who liked online quotes from “Unabomber’’ Ted Kaczynski — and seethed in a manifesto, “These parasites simply had it coming,” law enforcement sources told The Post on Monday.
Tech whiz Luigi Mangione , 26, originally from Towson, Md., apparently hated the medical community because of how it treated his sick relative, sources said.
The suspect also may have held a grudge because of his own interactions with the industry, sources said — noting an X-ray photo on his X account showing four pins in a spine.
Mangione — who hails from a wealthy well-known Maryland family , with a cousin in the state legislature — also had five books involving chronic back pain on his reading list on his GoodReads account.
They included titles such as “Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery,’’ and “Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease―and How to Fight It.’’

"The continuing crimes committed by the Zionist enemy on Syrian territory, whether by occupying more lands in the Golan Heights or striking and destroying the defensive capabilities of the Syrian state, represent a blatant aggression and a brazen violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian state and people, and constitute an attempt to destabilize this brotherly country.
This aggressive occupation of Syrian lands comes with the continued aggression of the Zionist army on Lebanon and its daily violations and attacks on Gaza, which places the peoples in front of an imminent danger that confirms the unity of the peoples’ path and the necessity of rejecting and confronting this aggression.
While we condemn these attacks, we warn against the consequences of their continuation. We also call on the world, especially the Arab and Islamic worlds, to take firm positions against these crimes and to exert pressure in all political and legal fields to stop this series of attacks, as all the justifications put forward by the enemy are flimsy allegations.
All attempts by the enemy to control new Syrian lands cannot establish any kind of rights, as all of this can only be called an ongoing occupation in the Golan region since 1967.

On this day in 1987, the world witnessed the outbreak of the first Palestinian Intifada, one of the longest lasting rebellions against Israel’s occupation.
A spontaneous uprising of resistance in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip after 20 years of merciless occupation, the Intifada was triggered after an Israeli truck deliberately drove into Palestinian vehicles in Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp. Four were crushed to death and seven were critically injured. This caused outrage, sparking protests and riots in the camp, which later turned into clashes with occupying Israeli forces, and ultimately the death of a seventeen year old Hatem al-Sisi who was shot in the heart by an Israeli soldier. It was then that Palestinians across the West Bank quickly followed suit. The rebellion even reached the 1948 territories.
The First Intifada is sometimes referred to as the ‘Stone Uprising,’ as one of the main methods of confrontation used by Palestinians was throwing rocks at Israeli tanks and forces.
The official Israeli narrative often invokes the biblical story of David and Goliath. Funnily enough, Israel has, since 1948, seen itself in David, surrounded and attacked by its enemies in all directions. Ironically, it was the Palestinians who went up against Goliath, mobilizing against a highly equipped occupier with nothing but rocks, boycotts, strikes, art, tax resistance and civil disobedience. Students also played a leading role in the uprising. The Israeli response was brutally disproportionate, but nothing they did could stop the uprising.
Over 1,000 Palestinians were killed, 240 of them children. Meanwhile, 100 Israeli settlers and 60 soldiers were killed between 1987 and 1994.
This acted as a catalyst for ‘peace’ talks for the first time since the Camp David Accords of 1979, leading to the signing of the first, problematic Oslo Accord in 1993.

Israeli airstrikes hit the Mazzeh district of Damascus and an airbase in Suwayda in southern Syria on 8 December, just hours after the Syrian government fell to foreign-backed extremists.
Dozens of Israeli airstrikes hit the Mazzeh Military Airport along with customs and intelligence buildings, the security square, scientific research facilities, and defense laboratories.
Additionally, suspected Israeli warplanes bombed the Khalkhala air base in southern Syria, two regional security sources told Reuters.

The Israeli army has systematically targeted all of Syria's military capabilities from the moment Turkish-backed extremist groups took control of the country's capital
Israeli jets have launched well over 250 airstrikes across dozens of locations in the north, east, west, and south of Syria as of 10 December, targeting all of the country's air defense systems, military bases, and overground military assets.
Heavy airstrikes have destroyed weapons and ammo depots, factories, research facilities, and all military airfields and naval bases since extremist armed groups entered the capital, Damascus, and seized power on Sunday morning.
Israeli media described the blitzkrieg as the “most intense” bombing of Syria since the October 1973 War. Channel 12 reported that "the air force is operating on a very broad scale across Syria to destroy the remnants of the Syrian Army."
"In more than 250 raids, the air force destroyed tanks, planes, helicopters, ships, air defense systems, missiles, military factories, and security facilities … If this operation succeeds, the new rebel regime will have to start from scratch, with simple weapons like M16s and Kalashnikovs, to build its military capabilities as a new state," the Israeli broadcaster said in its report broadcast on Monday night.

A week later goes to a local McDonalds where he brings the murder weapon, the fake ID he used to check into a hotel, and a written manifesto on how horrible the American healthcare system is. He somehow gets identified by the cashier after he sits down.
He works on his laptop until police come inside the McDonalds, sitting there with a ghost gun and suppressor he made himself.

US, UK Consider Removing HTS From Terror Blacklist To 'Deepen Contact' With Al-Qaeda Offshoot
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad on Saturday, accomplishing a long-time goal of US foreign policy
US officials are considering removing Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the US terrorist list after the offshoot of the Islamic State of Iraq (later known as ISIS) helped achieve the long-term US goal of overthrowing the Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad, The Washington Post reported on 9 December.
“US officials are in contact with all the groups involved in fighting in Syria, including the main group that ousted Assad, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was once affiliated with Al-Qaeda and remains on a US terrorist list,” the newspaper wrote.
A US official told The Post that the US government has not ruled out removing the terror designation from HTS to enable deeper US contact and cooperation with the group.
“We have to be smart … and also very mindful and pragmatic about the realities on the ground,” the official said.
Another US official said the White House is in the process of conducting a “real-time assessment” about HTS, which took control of Damascus on Saturday after a lightning two-week offensive launched from its stronghold in Syria's northwest Idlib Governorate.
The UK government is also considering removing HTS from the list of banned terrorist groups.

The Obama and Biden administrations (more so Obama, whose State Department essentially instigated the war at Israel's behest) are absolutely to blame as well, but Al Qaeda is ultimately a US creation and the current chaos in Syria is a direct consequence of horrific US foreign policy decisions, many of which are neoconservative in nature, meaning they conflate Israeli foreign policy goals with American foreign policy goals.

On Monday, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary General António Guterres said: “there should be no military forces or activities in the area of separation. And Israel and Syria must continue to uphold the terms of that 1974 agreement, and preserve stability in the Golan.”
Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since 1967, and the Israeli government officially annexed the region in 1981.
