At Least Three Civilians Killed As Israel Escalates ‘Ceasefire’ Airstrikes In Southern Lebanon - 12/8

We’re more than a week into the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire. Israel has continued carrying out airstrikes against Lebanon despite the ceasefire, and the number and intensity of the strikes appear to be escalating this weekend .

At least three civilians were killed today in an Israeli airstrike against the southern Lebanese town of Dibbine. Dibbine is north of the town of Khiam, which has been a frequent target during the ceasefire.

Earlier on Saturday, four people were killed and six wounded in Israeli attacks on Beit Lif, which is further to the southwest. The attacks this weekend bring the number of people Israel has killed in Lebanon since the ceasefire began to 23. In addition, 24 people have been injured.

Lebanon has reported well over 100 Israeli ceasefire violations since the deal began, most involving shooting at people or carrying out airstrikes against Lebanese territory. Hezbollah has launched a small number of airstrikes against northern Israel in retaliation, though Secretary of State Tony Blinken still says the ceasefire is “holding.”

Israel has claimed many “violations” of the ceasefire agreement, though most are Lebanese civilians in vehicles attempting to return home to southern Lebanon. The IDF has warned civilians not to return, but it isn’t clear that doing so amounts to a ceasefire violation.

Biden Says Fall Of Assad Is A ‘Fundamental Act Of Justice’

Biden also announced the US launched dozens of airstrikes in Syria against ISIS targets

President Biden on Sunday celebrated the overthrow of the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by al-Qaeda-linked militants, calling it a “fundamental act of justice.”

Biden said Assad’s allies Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah couldn’t defend Syria thanks to US support for Israel and Ukraine.

“The upshot of all of this is, for the first time ever, neither Russia nor Iran nor Hezbollah could defend this abhorrent regime in Syria. And this is a direct result of the blows that Ukraine [and] Israel have delivered upon their own self-defense with unflagging support of the United States,” he said.

Biden also listed ways the US has pressured the Assad government over the years, including through crippling economic sanctions and the US occupation of eastern Syria. “Over the past four years, my administration had pursued a clear and principled policy toward Syria. First, we made clear from the start sanctions on Assad would remain in place unless he engaged seriously in a political process to end the civil war,” he said.

“Second, we maintained a military presence in Syria. Our counter ISIS, to counter the support of local partners as well on the ground, their partners. Never ceding an inch of territory,” he said.

The third form of support that Biden listed was supporting Israel’s “freedom of action against Iranian networks in Syria and against actors aligned with Iran.” For years, Israel has launched airstrikes in Syria, which significantly increased in the months leading up to the offensive that led to Assad’s ouster.

Biden said the US would maintain its military presence in eastern Syria and that the US had launched airstrikes against ISIS targets in the country on Sunday. US Central Command later announced it had launched “dozens” of strikes against 75 ISIS targets in Syria using multiple aircraft, including B-52 heavy bombers.

US Considering Removing HTS From Terror List After Syria Takeover

US officials say they're in contact with the al-Qaeda-linked group

The US is considering removing the al-Qaeda offshoot Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the list of US-designated terror organizations after the group led the offensive that ousted former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Washington Post reported that US officials are in contact with HTS and other groups involved in the offensive. One US official said the Biden administration was doing a “real-time assessment” on whether or not HTS should be removed from the list of foreign terrorist organizations.

POLITICO reported there is a “furious debate” among US officials about the issue. “There is a huge scramble to see if, and how, and when we can delist HTS,” one official said.

HTS’s leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, also has a $10 million US bounty on his head. Middle East Eye reported that US officials are debating the “merit” of keeping the bounty in place. An Arab official told the outlet that the debate has divided the Biden administration.

Julani was the founder of al-Nusra Front, the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria. In 2016, Julani attempted to rebrand al-Nusra by changing its name and claiming to cut ties with al-Qaeda. In 2017, HTS was formed by merging al-Nusra and several other Islamist groups.

"The continuing crimes committed by the Zionist enemy on Syrian territory, whether by occupying more lands in the Golan Heights or striking and destroying the defensive capabilities of the Syrian state, represent a blatant aggression and a brazen violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian state and people, and constitute an attempt to destabilize this brotherly country.

This aggressive occupation of Syrian lands comes with the continued aggression of the Zionist army on Lebanon and its daily violations and attacks on Gaza, which places the peoples in front of an imminent danger that confirms the unity of the peoples’ path and the necessity of rejecting and confronting this aggression.

While we condemn these attacks, we warn against the consequences of their continuation. We also call on the world, especially the Arab and Islamic worlds, to take firm positions against these crimes and to exert pressure in all political and legal fields to stop this series of attacks, as all the justifications put forward by the enemy are flimsy allegations.

All attempts by the enemy to control new Syrian lands cannot establish any kind of rights, as all of this can only be called an ongoing occupation in the Golan region since 1967.

On this day in 1987, the world witnessed the outbreak of the first Palestinian Intifada, one of the longest lasting rebellions against Israel’s occupation.

A spontaneous uprising of resistance in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip after 20 years of merciless occupation, the Intifada was triggered after an Israeli truck deliberately drove into Palestinian vehicles in Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp. Four were crushed to death and seven were critically injured. This caused outrage, sparking protests and riots in the camp, which later turned into clashes with occupying Israeli forces, and ultimately the death of a seventeen year old Hatem al-Sisi who was shot in the heart by an Israeli soldier. It was then that Palestinians across the West Bank quickly followed suit. The rebellion even reached the 1948 territories.

The First Intifada is sometimes referred to as the ‘Stone Uprising,’ as one of the main methods of confrontation used by Palestinians was throwing rocks at Israeli tanks and forces.

The official Israeli narrative often invokes the biblical story of David and Goliath. Funnily enough, Israel has, since 1948, seen itself in David, surrounded and attacked by its enemies in all directions. Ironically, it was the Palestinians who went up against Goliath, mobilizing against a highly equipped occupier with nothing but rocks, boycotts, strikes, art, tax resistance and civil disobedience. Students also played a leading role in the uprising. The Israeli response was brutally disproportionate, but nothing they did could stop the uprising.

Over 1,000 Palestinians were killed, 240 of them children. Meanwhile, 100 Israeli settlers and 60 soldiers were killed between 1987 and 1994.

This acted as a catalyst for ‘peace’ talks for the first time since the Camp David Accords of 1979, leading to the signing of the first, problematic Oslo Accord in 1993.

Israeli airstrikes hit the Mazzeh district of Damascus and an airbase in Suwayda in southern Syria on 8 December, just hours after the Syrian government fell to foreign-backed extremists.

One source claimed that the attack appeared to be aimed at preventing these weapons from falling into the hands of HTS.

During the war in Syria between 2011 and 2018, Israel provided direct support to militants from HTS, formerly known as the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front.

Israel provided weapons, medical assistance, salaries, and air support from its air force to Nusra militants as they battled the Syrian army in the south of the country.
