Israeli Army 'Preparing For Any Scenario' In Syria: Officials

'We want them to weaken one another' officials told Israeli media about the battles between Al-Qaeda and ISIS-linked extremists against the Syrian army and its allies

The Israeli military said on 5 December that troops stationed near the Syrian border are “preparing for any scenario in attack and defense” as Turkish and US-backed extremists continue to overrun Syrian defenses in the west.

“The IDF will not allow a threat near the Syrian–Israeli border and will act to thwart any threat to the citizens of the State of Israel,” the statement stresses.

The warning comes mere weeks after the UN accused Tel Aviv of committing “serious violations” of a 50-year-old ceasefire agreement with Damascus by starting work on a ‘separation wall’ in the occupied Golan Heights similar to those erected along the borders with Lebanon, Egypt, Gaza, and throughout the West Bank.

As the situation in western Syria deteriorated on Thursday night, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi held an assessment meeting with the military’s top brass to discuss their next move. According to local reports, following the meeting, the army declared a state of “maximum alert” near the border with Syria.

“[Israel’s interest is] that they continue fighting one another … It’s entirely clear to us that one side is Salafi jihadists and the other side is Iran and Hezbollah. We want them to weaken one another,” an Israeli official told the Times of Israel.

Hezbollah Leader Says Group Giving Lebanon Ceasefire 'Opportunity For Success', Vows To Support Syria

UN officials say Israel has violated the one-week-old truce deal about 100 times

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem said on 5 December that, despite dozens of Israeli violations inside Lebanon, the group is “giving an opportunity” for the ceasefire agreement to succeed.

“Israel has committed more than 60 violations of the ceasefire agreement … The Lebanese state is responsible for following up on Israeli violations, and the resistance is giving the opportunity to make the ceasefire agreement a success,” Qassem said during a televised speech on Thursday.

According to the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Israel has breached the ceasefire “approximately 100 times” since it went into effect last week. The US and France, the main guarantors of the deal, have also privately told officials in Tel Aviv they are violating the agreement.

As over one million displaced Lebanese begin to rebuild their lives following a nearly two-month-long battle with Israel, the Hezbollah chief also announced financial support mechanisms to help in the rebuilding process.

Israel Plans Largest West Bank Land Grab In Decades

The move aims to expand several illegal settlements in the West Bank and establish continuity between them

Israel plans to confiscate more than 23,000 dunams (around 5,900 acres) in the occupied West Bank and declare it as “state” territory with the aim of illegal settlement expansion, with the move being described as the largest Israeli land grab in decades.

“More than 23,000 dunams of land for the benefit of the settlement in Yosh. We determine facts on the ground and thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state!” Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said via X.

According to Israel’s Channel 14, the move is one of the largest land appropriations since the Oslo Accords in 1993.

Since then and up until the end of 2023, about 50,000 dunams in the West Bank have been declared as Israeli “state land.”

Channel 14 notes that as part of the decision, the Maale Adumim settlement east of occupied Jerusalem will be expanded by around 2,600 dunams – aimed at linking it to the Kedar settlement. ..

Israel has recently taken several actions to prepare for the annexation of the West Bank, which was illegally occupied in 1967.

Smotrich ordered the Defense Ministry’s Settlement Directorate and Civil Administration in November to prepare the groundwork for annexing the West Bank and expanding settlement expansion. Last year, significant administrative powers in the West Bank were transferred from the military to Smotrich’s hands.

According to a report by Israel Hayom in early December, settler council in the occupied West Bank have been drafting a plan to tighten Israel’s grip over the territory and accelerate the path towards annexation as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House.

🚨🇸🇾Reuters: Syrian Army Command Says Assad’s Rule Has Ended

Reports of celebrations in Damascus, but also uncertainty about the future

The Islamists’ offensive across western Syria has accelerated substantially in the past few days, and now Reuters is reporting that the Syrian Army Command is telling officers that the era of President Bashar al-Assad’s rule has ended .

The apparent regime change is the culmination of just two weeks of offensives by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allies. HTS is run by Abu Mohammad al-Julani, and has had considerable ties to al-Qaeda.They held only a portion of the Idlib Province at the beginning, which they had held for years as the Syrian Civil War had mostly stalemated.

HTS took the major city of Aleppo in just a few days , and the Syrian Army promised a counterattack that ultimately never came. The HTS offensive continued southward, seizing Hama then , within 48 hours, taking both Homs and Damascus as well.

The current situation leaves the HTS in control of the four largest cities in Syria, along with much of the country’s southern frontier with Israel and Jordan. Celebrations have been reported in Damascus, but there is also substantial uncertainty over what is going to happen next.

Other parts of Syria remain divided, with the Kurdish SDF, backed by the US, holding the northeast. The SDF has also seized other towns and villages in recent days, as the Syrian government was unable to defend them.

'Jewish State Will Extend From Jerusalem To Damascus': Israeli Finance Minister

In a new documentary, Bezalel Smotrich says the Zionist goal of conquering parts of Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia is part of Israeli public discourse

In a new documentary, Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich detailed his desire to conquer not only all Palestinian territory to the Jordan River but also the Syrian capital of Damascus and territories extending as far as Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Smotrich, the Finance Minister in the Israeli cabinet and head of the Religious Zionism party, made the comments in a recently released documentary entitled Israel: Extremists in Power. The documentary was produced by Arte Reportage, a Franco-German broadcast news magazine.

When asked about his goal, Smotrich tells the interviewer, “I want a Jewish state … It is a country run according to the values of the Jewish people.”

Israel currently controls territory from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River, including the Palestinian territories in the West Bank, which have been under Israeli military occupation since 1967.

Israel has been building illegal Jewish settlements on stolen Palestinian land in the West Bank ever since.

The interviewer then asked Smotrich whether he thought the borders of the Jewish state should extend past the Jordan River.

Smotrich responded by saying, “Absolutely, but slowly … Our great religious elders used to say that the future of Jerusalem was to extend as far as Damascus.”

The documentary narrator then added, “Bezalel Smotrich has a maximalist vision of the promised land. And it includes all Palestinian lands, but also territories in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt. Even in Saudi Arabia. A radical vision admittedly, but one that is accepted in public debate in Israel.”
