YNET: Michael Bloomberg Donates $27.8 million to Reconstruction in Northern Israel

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg, whose fortune is estimated at $102 billion dollars, according to Forbes, announced that he will donate 100 million shekels, about $27.8 million, to the reconstruction of the areas in the north that were damaged by the war. Senior officials in local governments estimate that this is only an initial investment.

Israeli Strike In Lebanon Injures Five As Ceasefire Violations Continue

The US has claimed the ceasefire is holding despite frequent Israeli attacks

On Thursday, an Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanon town of Aitaroun injured five people, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported , as Israeli violations of the ceasefire continue.

According to a tally from Turkey’s Anadolu Agency , there have been 137 Israeli ceasefire violations since the truce was supposed to go into effect last Wednesday. Earlier this week, the UN’s peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, said there had been 100 Israeli violations.

Israeli attacks since last Wednesday have killed at least 15 people . For their part, Hezbollah has only fired two rockets toward Israeli positions, which it did on Monday as a “warning shot” in response to the Israeli violations.

Despite the constant Israeli fire, Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed on Wednesday that the ceasefire was holding. The US had given Israel a letter of assurance that it could strike Lebanon if it deemed the ceasefire was being violated, giving Israel significant freedom of action.

Israeli officials have justified their strikes by claiming Hezbollah’s presence and activity was a violation of the ceasefire. But under the deal, Hezbollah has 60 days to withdraw its fighters and heavy weapons north of the Litani River. During that time, Israeli forces are supposed to pull out of southern Lebanon.

Blinken Claims Lebanon ‘Ceasefire Is Holding’ Despite Israeli Fire

Israel has killed at least 15 people in Lebanon since the ceasefire was supposed to go into effect last Wednesday

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday claimed the Lebanon ceasefire was “holding” despite repeated Israeli attacks on south Lebanon.

At a press conference in Brussels , Blinken was asked if Israel had violated the ceasefire by bombing southern Lebanon but didn’t give a direct answer and pointed to a mechanism established by the US and France meant to uphold the truce.

“The ceasefire is holding, and we’re using the mechanism that was established when any concerns have arisen about any alleged or purported violations,” Blinken said.

As of Tuesday, Israeli strikes on south Lebanon have killed at least 15 people since the ceasefire was supposed to go into effect last Wednesday. Hezbollah has only fired two rockets , which it did on Monday as a “warning shot” in response to the Israeli violations. At that point, Israel had violated the ceasefire around 100 times, according to the UN’s peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

The reporter questioning Blinken noted media reports that the US has told Israel it believes the Israeli military is violating the ceasefire, but Blinken refused to say so publicly.

Old Feuds Reignite Between Turkish-Backed Extremists Attacking Syria's Aleppo

Syria’s military and air force, backed by Russian jets, have launched a heavy counteroffensive against extremist groups waging an assault on Aleppo and other areas

Tensions have erupted between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) force as they wage a joint assault against Idlib countryside, Aleppo, and Hama.

An HTS leader, Abu Dhar Muhambal, was killed east of Aleppo by militants affiliated with Jaish al-Islam, one of the extremist factions incorporated within the SNA. Muhambal was announced dead by HTS on 1 December.

He was assassinated after demanding that Jaish al-Islam hand over territory they had captured during the assault to HTS, Al Mayadeen reported on 4 December. A clash ensued, and the remaining fighters from the SNA faction surrendered to HTS.

HTS-led factions also stormed sites belonging to the SNA’s Fajr al-Hurriya group near the Kuweires military college in Aleppo, which was seized days ago by the Turkish proxy.

Additionally, SNA militants expressed that they were threatened by HTS leader Abu Muhammad al-Halabi, prompting the Turkish-backed fighters to flee from their positions.

HTS and the SNA have had longstanding issues, and in 2022, they fought fierce clashes against each other over territorial disputes in the Aleppo countryside. The SNA coalition – made up of several former ISIS elements – was formed by Ankara in 2017 to act as a Turkish proxy in Syria. HTS assumed its current name that year after rebranding itself more than once from its initial title: Al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front. It has also enjoyed Qatari support over the years.

Both are now the leading forces in the ongoing extremist assault that was launched against the Idlib countryside, Aleppo, and Hama early on 27 November. Syrian troops have launched a large counteroffensive with backing from their air force and Russian jets, yet the extremists have captured large swathes in the countryside of Aleppo and Hama.

Aleppo City has also fallen under their control. Video footage on 4 December showed HTS’s leader, Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, entering the city with a large entourage.

As Damascus’s forces continue to push forward with their counteroffensive, the Syrian army announced on Wednesday the killing of over 1,600 militants since the start of the armed opposition’s assault last week.

Fierce Clashes Between HTS-Led Militants, Syrian Troops Near Hama

At least 2,000 militants have been killed since the assault against Syria began last week

The Syrian Defense Ministry said in a statement on 5 December that government troops are engaged in fierce clashes and have inflicted heavy losses on extremist groups in the countryside of Hama in central-west Syria.

“The air force, artillery, and missile forces targeted terrorist gatherings and convoys in their locations and axes of movement, which resulted in direct hits among their ranks, killing and wounding dozens of them, and destroying much of their equipment and vehicles,” the Defense Ministry said.

The ministry said that joint Russian–Syrian airstrikes were targeting militants in the area and that troops were “working to strengthen the lines of our defensive forces in that direction.”

A military source cited by Syria TV said heavy clashes were raging in the Hama countryside, and “heavy losses” were inflicted on militants.

Past midnight on Wednesday, the opposition-linked war monitor, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), said that armed groups trying to take control of Jabal Zain al-Abidin in the Hama countryside were ambushed by Syrian army forces.

The Lebanese Civil Defense was forced to leave south Lebanon's Naqoura after Israel detonated an explosive drone above them while they were assessing damage and searching for dead bodies in the town. The same team had also left the town of Shamaa after Israeli artillery shelling targeted the vicinity of the Shamaa shrine where the team was performing similar operations.

US Denies Amnesty’s Conclusion That Israel Is Committing Genocide

Amnesty is calling on the US to end military aid to Israel

The US on Thursday rejected a 296-page report from Amnesty International that concluded Israel is conducting genocide in Gaza.

“We disagree with the conclusions of such a report. We have said previously and continue to find that the allegations of genocide are unfounded,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.

US officials have repeatedly denied the idea that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza since it would implicate them due to the massive amount of military aid that the US has provided Israel over the past year.

Amnesty is calling for the US and other countries that supply arms to Israel to end the weapons shipments to avoid being complicit in genocide. “States that continue to transfer arms to Israel at this time must know they are violating their obligation to prevent genocide and are at risk of becoming complicit in genocide,” said Agnès Callamard, the secretary general of Amnesty.

“All states with influence over Israel, particularly key arms suppliers like the USA and Germany, but also other EU member states, the UK and others, must act now to bring Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza to an immediate end,” she added.

Website Mocking Brazilian Supreme Court Minister Dias Toffoli Blocked

Brazil’s top court, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) , continues to “dabble” in censorship, on issues big and small.

A site set up by journalist, biologist, and free speech advocate Eli Vieira to satirize, criticize, and document what opponents see as controversial activities of one of STF members, Dias Toffol, has been blocked.

The fate of the site seems to have been determined “only” by its name – “Death to Democracy” (“Morte à Democracia” in Portuguese). Still, the whole debacle is taken by opponents of President Lula as yet more proof that democracy in Brazil is indeed, to put it mildly, struggling.

In a post on X, Vieira confirmed that the domain  http://morteademocracia.com.br was frozen. He advised others not to buy .br domains because his “experiment” just showed that the authorities can shut those down arbitrarily.

Vieira only registered the site under this particular domain after Toffol, a Lula nominee, used an STF hearing to ask a lawyer if someone would be allowed to do that.

The lawyer replied that it was possible if the domain was available. But the real answer arrived after Vieira tried doing it – only to get the site blocked in less than a day.
