Words Reportedly Written On Bullet Casings Tied To CEO'S Killing Echo Scathing Phrase About Insurance Industry

The phrase "delay, deny, defend" is used to describe a strategy of rejecting claims

Bullet casings found at the scene where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in New York City on Wednesday, Dec. 4, reportedly had words written on them that bore a resemblance to a phrase about the insurance industry.

As authorities continue to search for the masked killer, police sources told ABC News that the words "deny," "defend" and "depose" were written on bullet casings. Those words are similar to "delay, deny, defend" — a phrase about the insurance industry to describe a strategy of rejecting claims.

The phrase echoes the title of a 2010 book Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Out Claims And What You Can Do About It , by Rutgers University law professor Jay Feinman.

The book describes how insurance companies improve profits by “delaying payment of claims, denying valid claims in whole or in part, and defending their actions by forcing claimants to enter litigation," according to its description.

Damascus’ forces said they ‘repositioned’ away from Hama to protect civilians from battles, as extremist groups entered the city after a violent attack

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) announced on 5 December that it has “repositioned” its forces outside the west-central city of Hama to “preserve the lives” of civilians and not expose them to battles, as extremist groups wage a massive assault against the city and other areas of the country...

“During the past hours.... these groups were able to penetrate several axes in the city and enter it, despite suffering heavy losses in their ranks,” the statement added.

“In order to preserve the lives of civilians in Hama and not to involve them in battles inside the cities, the military units stationed there redeployed and repositioned themselves outside the city,” it went on to say, adding that the military “affirms that it will continue to carry out its national duty in reclaiming the areas entered by terrorist organizations.”

Militants led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – formerly known as Al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front – launched a massive and sudden assault on the Idlib countryside, Aleppo, and Hama early on 27 November, just as a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon was taking effect. The Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) force, which consists of many ISIS elements, is also involved in the assault.

Report: US Offered To Withdraw Troops From Syria In Exchange For Assad Cutting Ties With Iran

Officials told The New York Times that Israeli airstrikes and offers from the US were part of a 'two-pronged approach' to pressure Assad

The US had proposed the idea of withdrawing its troops from eastern Syria and possibly lifting sanctions in exchange for the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cutting ties with Iran and Hezbollah, The New York Times reported on Wednesday.

The report said the offer to pull out troops and other proposals made by the US and Gulf Arab states were made in coordination with Israeli strikes on Syria as part of a “two-pronged approach” to pressure Assad to abandon his alliance with Iran and Hezbollah, which would impede weapons shipments from Iran to Lebanon.

Since October 2023, Israel has dramatically stepped up airstrikes on Syria, bombing the country over 220 times . The Times report said that Israel, with support from the US, was eager to “take advantage” of the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel to ramp up the pressure on Syria.

Officials told the Times that the offensive launched last week by the al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham makes it less likely that Assad would be willing to cut ties with Iran or Hezbollah since he’ll need their help with the fighting.

Reuters also reported this week that the US and the UAE had offered sanctions relief to Syria if it ended its alliance with Iran and cut off weapons shipments to Lebanon. That report said that the HTS offensive was “a signal of precisely the sort of weakness in Assad’s alliance with Iran that the Emirati and US initiative aims to exploit” but also acknowledged it could increase his reliance on Iran.

‘Last Shelters’ Emptied At Gunpoint In Gaza’s Beit Lahia As Israel Displaces Thousands

Israeli forces used explosive-laden barrels and mines to intimidate Palestinians into fleeing their shelters

Israeli troops forcibly displaced thousands of Palestinian civilians from the last shelters in Gaza’s northern city of Beit Lahia on 4 December, as Tel Aviv continues its brutal extermination and expulsion campaign across the strip’s north.

“Occupation forces force displaced people to evacuate the last shelters in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza Strip. The occupation army ordered the evacuation of shelters via loudspeakers in quadcopter aircraft in Beit Lahia,” said Palestinian journalist Anas al-Sharif.

The evacuations are being ordered “under the threat of arms,” he added. Images on social media showed scores of displaced residents fleeing their shelters.

According to Gaza journalist Hossam Shabat, over 6,000 Palestinians have been displaced from schools in Beit Lahia, and have reached the Civil Administration checkpoint.

The Israeli army has stepped up its violent attacks on the area in order to put pressure on civilians to evacuate.

Israeli Strike In Lebanon Injures Five As Ceasefire Violations Continue

The US has claimed the ceasefire is holding despite frequent Israeli attacks

On Thursday, an Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanon town of Aitaroun injured five people, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported , as Israeli violations of the ceasefire continue.

According to a tally from Turkey’s Anadolu Agency , there have been 137 Israeli ceasefire violations since the truce was supposed to go into effect last Wednesday. Earlier this week, the UN’s peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, said there had been 100 Israeli violations.

Israeli attacks since last Wednesday have killed at least 15 people . For their part, Hezbollah has only fired two rockets toward Israeli positions, which it did on Monday as a “warning shot” in response to the Israeli violations.

Despite the constant Israeli fire, Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed on Wednesday that the ceasefire was holding. The US had given Israel a letter of assurance that it could strike Lebanon if it deemed the ceasefire was being violated, giving Israel significant freedom of action.

Israeli officials have justified their strikes by claiming Hezbollah’s presence and activity was a violation of the ceasefire. But under the deal, Hezbollah has 60 days to withdraw its fighters and heavy weapons north of the Litani River. During that time, Israeli forces are supposed to pull out of southern Lebanon.

Blinken Claims Lebanon ‘Ceasefire Is Holding’ Despite Israeli Fire

Israel has killed at least 15 people in Lebanon since the ceasefire was supposed to go into effect last Wednesday

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday claimed the Lebanon ceasefire was “holding” despite repeated Israeli attacks on south Lebanon.

At a press conference in Brussels , Blinken was asked if Israel had violated the ceasefire by bombing southern Lebanon but didn’t give a direct answer and pointed to a mechanism established by the US and France meant to uphold the truce.

“The ceasefire is holding, and we’re using the mechanism that was established when any concerns have arisen about any alleged or purported violations,” Blinken said.

As of Tuesday, Israeli strikes on south Lebanon have killed at least 15 people since the ceasefire was supposed to go into effect last Wednesday. Hezbollah has only fired two rockets , which it did on Monday as a “warning shot” in response to the Israeli violations. Old Feuds Reignite Between Turkish-Backed Extremists Attacking Syria's Aleppo

Syria’s military and air force, backed by Russian jets, have launched a heavy counteroffensive against extremist groups waging an assault on Aleppo and other areas

Tensions have erupted between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) force as they wage a joint assault against Idlib countryside, Aleppo, and Hama.

An HTS leader, Abu Dhar Muhambal, was killed east of Aleppo by militants affiliated with Jaish al-Islam, one of the extremist factions incorporated within the SNA. Muhambal was announced dead by HTS on 1 December.

He was assassinated after demanding that Jaish al-Islam hand over territory they had captured during the assault to HTS, Al Mayadeen reported on 4 December. A clash ensued, and the remaining fighters from the SNA faction surrendered to HTS.

HTS-led factions also stormed sites belonging to the SNA’s Fajr al-Hurriya group near the Kuweires military college in Aleppo, which was seized days ago by the Turkish proxy.

Additionally, SNA militants expressed that they were threatened by HTS leader Abu Muhammad al-Halabi, prompting the Turkish-backed fighters to flee from their positions.

HTS and the SNA have had longstanding issues, and in 2022, they fought fierce clashes against each other over territorial disputes in the Aleppo countryside. The SNA coalition – made up of several former ISIS elements – was formed by Ankara in 2017 to act as a Turkish proxy in Syria. HTS assumed its current name that year after rebranding itself more than once from its initial title: Al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front. It has also enjoyed Qatari support over the years.

Both are now the leading forces in the ongoing extremist assault that was launched against the Idlib countryside, Aleppo, and Hama early on 27 November. Syrian troops have launched a large counteroffensive with backing from their air force and Russian jets, yet the extremists have captured large swathes in the countryside of Aleppo and Hama.

Aleppo City has also fallen under their control. Video footage on 4 December showed HTS’s leader, Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, entering the city with a large entourage.

As Damascus’s forces continue to push forward with their counteroffensive, the Syrian army announced on Wednesday the killing of over 1,600 militants since the start of the armed opposition’s assault last week.
