Israeli Drone Pilots Targeted Own Settlements, Bases, Civilians On 7 October: Report

The pilots never imagined they would have to carry out air strikes on their own territory, and on such an 'undreamt-of scale'

Israel’s fleet of Hermes 450 “Zik” armed drones carried out attacks on Israeli military bases, settlements, and civilians during the Hamas attack on 7 October, according to a 14 November report from Mishpacha Magazine.

Previous reports have emerged showing that Israeli forces used tanks to kill Israeli civilians barricaded inside homes with their Hamas captors, and Apache helicopters to fire on Hamas fighters and their Israeli captives while returning back to Gaza.

During the fighting, some 1,200 Israelis were killed, with some killed by Hamas, and others by Israeli forces. Hamas took some 240 Israeli soldiers, civilians, and foreign workers captive.

Israel’s armed drone program was initiated in 1993 by Ehud Barak, then Chief of Staff of the army under Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon later approved the use of offensive drones for assassinations in the Gaza Strip. The best known of these attacks was the killing of paraplegic Hamas founder Ahmed Yassin in 2004.

Since that time, armed drones have slowly been replacing Israel’s previous use of warplanes, including US-made F-16s.

In its 14 November report, Mishpacha interviewed members of Squadron 161, which operates Israel’s Zik drone fleet, for details of the role they played on 7 October, including in Kibbutz Be’eri.

The orthodox Jewish-focused magazine noted that Zik drones were the first aircraft to respond to the Hamas attack, and that “for the first time in history, they had to carry out strikes within Israeli territory, even on IDF [Israeli army] bases.”

“The squadron was facing a scenario they had never imagined, on an undreamt-of scale, and above all, having to carry out strikes inside Israeli territory, inside bases, inside kibbutzim, something they had never prepared for,” the magazine added.

“Who ever thought we would have to carry out strikes inside Israeli territory, and on that scale? That was a scenario we had never imagined,” stated First Lieutenant A.

He explained that there were initially no Israeli forces on the ground, and so he and other drone operators were using their cell phones to communicate with civilians in the settlements, or kibbutzim, for the locations of Hamas fighters to hit with airstrikes. “We eliminated dozens of terrorists this way. You talk to a civilian, receive a location, release your payload, and return to base. Again and again, like a movie,” he said.

Crucially, the drone operators targeted not only Hamas fighters but also their Israeli captives. “On each flight, they killed dozens of terrorists, prevented them from advancing further into Israel or returning to the Strip with captives, and helped stop the attack,” Mishpacha wrote.

🚨🚨NYT: Israel Knew Hamas’s Attack Plan More Than a Year Ago

A blueprint reviewed by The Times laid out the attack in detail. Israeli officials dismissed it as aspirational and ignored specific warnings.

Israeli officials obtained Hamas’s battle plan for the Oct. 7 terrorist attack more than a year before it happened, documents, emails and interviews show.

...The approximately 40-page document, which the Israeli authorities code-named “Jericho Wall,” outlined, point by point, exactly the kind of devastating invasion that led to the deaths of about 1,200 people.

The translated document, which was reviewed by The New York Times, did not set a date for the attack, but described a methodical assault designed to overwhelm the fortifications around the Gaza Strip, take over Israeli cities and storm key military bases, including a division headquarters.

Max Blumenthal: In my book, Goliath, I recounted how a former Israeli military intelligence analyst told me he nearly lost his mind during the second Lebanon invasion in 2006, when the army ran out of targets, and his unit was asked to concoct them.

This meant finding any civilian structure in southern Lebanon to hit, and obliterating family homes, hospitals, apartment blocs - anything. In a state of anguish, he asked a friend to break his leg with a 2x4 so he could escape military service, but the bone refused to give in. He eventually left Israel for Germany and became involved in anti-Zionist activism.

A handful of Israeli intelligence sources involved in the current assault Gaza appear to have developed similar issues with their military's targeting system. In anonymous interviews with the left-liberal @ 972mag, they disclosed how Israel uses AI to generate targets out of the Gaza population register. They call it a "mass assassination factory."

Under the AI system, known as "The Gospel," any home or neighborhood containing even a low level Hamas activist becomes a target, and the civilian death toll is known in advance: "Nothing happens by accident,” said one source. “When a 3-year-old girl is killed in a home in Gaza, it’s because someone in the army decided it wasn’t a big deal for her to be killed — that it was a price worth paying in order to hit [another] target. We are not Hamas. These are not random rockets. Everything is intentional. We know exactly how much collateral damage there is in every home.”

As is well known, Israel's Unit 8200 tracks cellphone signals to find targets. In the current round of fighting, if the army detects the cell signal of a Hamas target in a densely populated area like the Jabaliya refugee camp, "we shell based on a wide cellular pinpointing of where the target is, killing civilians. This is often done to save time, instead of doing a little more work to get a more accurate pinpointing," a source told 972.

The intelligence sources not only state that most targets in Gaza contain zero military value, but that the logic of "human shields" used to justify slaughtering civilians could easily be turned back on Israeli society. “I remember thinking that it was like if [Palestinian militants] would bomb all the private residences of our families when [Israeli soldiers] go back to sleep at home on the weekend,” reflected a soldier in an intel unit.

I have been saying since the start of the Israel military's blitzkreig on Gaza that its conduct is influenced less by strategic guidance than by a political imperative to satiate the outrage and bloodlust of the Jewish Israeli public. This too is confirmed by an intelligence source: "There is a feeling that senior officials in the army are aware of their failure on October 7, and are busy with the question of how to provide the Israeli public with an image [of victory] that will salvage their reputation.”

Five soldiers serving as prison guards during their mandatory military service will be questioned under caution by police this coming week, including three on Sunday, on suspicion of having intimate relationships with a Palestinian security prisoner at Ramon Prison in southern Israel, according to Hebrew media reports Saturday.

One report, by Channel 12 news, added that three Israel Prison Service (IPS) officials would also be questioned under caution on suspicion that they knew about the affair.

The reports said National Security Prisoner Itamar Ben Gvir was planning to bring a proposal to the next cabinet meeting to form a governmental commission of inquiry, headed by a judge, to examine the Israel Prison Service’s conduct in the recently uncovered case as well as a previously revealed case in which convicted terrorists allegedly assaulted and raped female soldiers serving as prison guards at Gilboa Prison in the north, with some prison guards “pimping out” the conscripts to placate inmates.

Pentagon Struggles To Foot Bill For Arms Buildup In West Asia: Report

Citing a stopgap budget due to a congressional deadlock, US defense officials say they are struggling to pay for the mass deployment of troops, warships, and fighter jets to the Eastern Mediterranean

Pentagon officials say they are struggling to find funds to pay for the recent military buildup in West Asia, according to a senior US defense official who spoke with Politico.

“Current events have revised some of the operational assumptions used to develop the FY 2024 President’s Budget request. Specifically, neither the base budget request nor the FY 2024 supplemental request included funding for US operations related to Israel,” Pentagon spokesperson Chris Sherwood is quoted as saying.

“Because DOD had to hunt for funds, that means less money for training, exercises, and deployments the military had already planned for the year. Some contractual payments could be delayed,” he added. “We’re taking it out of hide."

Politico reports that, as of 28 November, defense officials are “still working on releasing an estimate of the total cost of the US support for Israel.”

Just weeks after failing its sixth financial audit in a row – and despite counting on a ballooning budget that nears $1 trillion – Pentagon officials say they are working under a “stopgap measure” that prevents them from starting any new programs or paying for anything above the 2022 budget.
