HRW: Israel Deliberately Killed Three Journalists In Lebanon With US Bomb

The strike targeted a resort where over a dozen journalists were staying

Human Rights Watch said in a report on Monday that an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon that killed three journalists and injured four others was most likely a deliberate attack on civilians and a war crime that was carried out using a US-provided weapon.

The strike was conducted on October 25, 2024, and targeted the Hasbaya Village Club Resort in Hasbaya, southern Lebanon, where more than a dozen journalists had been staying. The strike hit the building at around 3 am when most of the journalists were sleeping.

HRW said it found no evidence of military activity in the area and reviewed information that indicated the Israeli military knew or should have known that journalists were staying in the building.

The strike killed Ghassan Najjar, a journalist and cameraman, and Mohammad Reda, a satellite broadcast engineer, who both worked for Al Mayadeen . Wissam Kassem, a cameraman for the Hezbollah-owned Al Manar TV , was also killed.

HRW said it determined the attack was carried out using a bomb fitted with a US-provided Joint Direct Attack Munition guidance kit manufactured by the American company Woodard. The JDAM kits are developed and sold by Boeing.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticizes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in her newly published memoir, accusing him of "completely undermining" the two-state solution. She also admits she had "insurmountable" differences with him.

She writes that she "liked" Olmert, describing him as "direct and to the point," and that he was "genuinely" committed to a two-state solution and that he had convinced her for the German army to participate in UNIFIL peacekeeping missions after the Second Lebanon War in 2006. [See]

Merkel emphasizes her support for such a solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, noting that it required Israel to have the strength to make painful concessions, such as halting settlement expansion.

From 2009 onward, however, she writes that the differences with Netanyahu became insurmountable. "We could only agree on the formula 'We agree to disagree,'" she writes. Merkel further criticizes him, noting that although he "sometimes mentioned the words two-state solution," in practice "he did nothing for it." Through settlement construction in the West Bank, she argues, Netanyahu "actually undermined it completely."

It was Netanyahu and Biden that announced the ceasefire. Hezbollah stayed silent. Even now, Hezbollah has not made a statement.

This shows it was Netanyahu and Biden that had to explain and justify this agreement to their people, because this ceasefire is a total failure for them. In fact, it is an implicit capitulation to Hezbollah.

Netanyahu made it clear that 'Israel has accepted' the ceasefire, meaning it was Hezbollah which offered it. When you offer something, you are in the position of power, you dictate the rules and the conditions, you are the one who gets to make the demands. Israel was the one that needed this most.

Have you ever seen the winner of a war announce the ceasefire first? No, it's always the loser, because they need to justify it to their people, in order not to face backlash.

This ceasefire agreement, in many ways, is much more lenient and less strict than the 2006 agreement, which is unanimously seen as a victory for Hezbollah. So, I think it is clear where we stand. The Party of God is, once again, victorious on the battlefield.

In fact, NSO Group installed and operated the spyware on behalf of its customers, making the company directly liable for the spyware's use, WhatsApp lawyers said in one court filing, released Nov. 14 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The court documents are part of a lawsuit that WhatsApp filed against NSO Group in October 2019 after discovering the Israeli firm had used WhatsApp servers to distribute Pegasus to some 1,400 mobile phones, including those belonging to journalists and rights activists.
