Haaretz: Satellite Photos Show: Gaza's Largest Refugee Camp in Near-total Ruins

The photos show a devastated Jabalya, with the Israeli military appearing to be systematically leveling what buildings remain

The refugee camp thought to be Gaza's largest has been almost totally destroyed by Israeli military activity, recently published satellite photos of Jabalya showed. The humanitarian situation in the refugee camp located in northern Gaza continues to deteriorate.

The photos indicate that the area, where more than 116,000 refugees lived in very crowded conditions, is no longer habitable, showing tens of thousands of homes destroyed or heavily damaged and essential infrastructure in ruins.

Satellite pictures from last month showed shelters for the displaced between buildings, which are now gone. Accompanying the obliteration of Jabalya's houses has been the area's transformation into a virtual enclave of the military, which seems to be systematically flattening what buildings remain.
Political and defense establishment officials say that telling residents of northern Gaza, including Jabalya, to evacuate isn't part of the "Generals' Plan" to impose a total siege on the area and expel all its civilians. Defense officials say that the military is now engaged in emptying cities and villages of their inhabitants, however.

According to Gazans still in the area or who were able to return for a short time, the refugee camp has recently experienced unprecedented levels of destruction and loss of life. During the most recent Israeli attacks, hundreds of complexes consisting of dozens of homes each were destroyed. Also destroyed were schools and medical centers. Essential infrastructure for water, electricity and sanitation is no longer functioning.

Haaretz: Legal Experts React To The Announcement Made By Defense Minister Israel Katz On Friday To Stop The Use Of Detention Without Trial Only For Jewish Settlers

Haaretz spoke to legal experts about Defense Minister Israel Katz's latest decision to stop the use of detention without trial against Jewish settlers, while continuing its use against Palestinians and Arab Israelis.

According to them, Katz's decision is a clearly illegal act that the High Court of Justice would likely overturn.

Prof. Barak Medina of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who is an expert on constitutional law, said administrative detention is designed hold individuals in custody about whom there is information that they are about to harm others to prevent them from carrying out their plans.

"The decision over whether to arrest a person needs to be based only on the principle of the assessment of the danger that he personally poses," Medina says.

"[Katz] is not authorized to decide in advance that in any case involving someone who is a Jewish citizen of Israel, the authority won't be applied... That's an explicit declaration of a discriminatory policy..."

Lawyer Michael Sfard, who is legal counsel to Yesh Din Volunteers for Human Rights, called the decision by Katz, who took office this month, "an apartheid act." Sfard said Katz "shamelessly declared a policy that entirely involves discrimination in favor of those whose mother is Jewish."

In any event, the law that applies to West Bank settlers is different from that applying to Palestinians, Sfard noted, and the use of administrative detention in the case of Jews is a rare occurrence while thousands of Palestinians are subject to it at any given time. "The decision to eliminate use of this Draconian tool when it involves Jews is a record high in the government's application of the ideology of Jewish supremacy."

29 Killed As Israel Levels Central Beirut Apartment With Bunker Buster Bomb

Over 70 others wounded; strike came without warning in the middle of the night

Israel attacking civilian targets without warning has become almost de rigueur in Lebanon these days. Overnight, however, the surprise attacks reached a new level, with Israel leveling an 8-storey apartment building in Central Beirut with a bunker buster bomb .

The building was on Mamoun Street in the Basta al-Fawqa. The attack came at about 4:00 AM , and the explosion was so powerful it was felt all across the Lebanese capital city. At least 29 people have been killed , and over 70 wounded . Rescue operations are still ongoing.

The use of a bunker buster bomb on a plainly civilian target seems excessive, and it’s not clear why Israel chose this unassuming building in the crowded center of Beirut to hit with such powerful weaponry. Israel has not publicly commented on the matter.

The bunker buster bombs are meant for targeting heavily fortified, or underground, complexes. The residential building, however, was clearly not meant to withstand airstrikes, let alone massive bombings, and the result with a big crater in the center of the neighborhood.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem earlier this week said that the attacks on central Beirut, which began last week, justified Hezbollah attacks on central Tel Aviv. This week, a missile strike did damage to an area of the Tel Aviv District , but east of the city of Tel Aviv itself.

Haaretz: The Israeli Army Is Allowing Gangs in Gaza to Loot Aid Trucks and Extort Protection Fees From Drivers

Armed clans in the Rafah area are blocking trucks entering Gaza from Israel, leading some organizations to avoid sending desperately needed humanitarian aid. These incidents are occurring in an area under full IDF control, with the army refraining from action due to concerns that harm to aid workers could provoke international criticism

The Israel Defense Forces is allowing armed Palestinians to loot aid convoys entering Gaza and to extort protection money from them, say sources in international aid organizations working in the enclave.

The sources told Haaretz that the armed men who belong to two clans from the Rafah district have blocked a large portion of the aid shipments entering Gaza through Israel's Kerem Shalom crossing. The looting is systematic, they said, yet the IDF has turned a blind eye. And since some of the aid groups refuse to pay protection money, the aid often ends up sitting in warehouses that are under Israeli army control.

Israeli Snipers ‘Shoot Palestinians For Sport’

Eyewitness accounts reveal Israeli snipers are systematically targeting unarmed civilians, including children, using tactics that point to deliberate genocidal intent and a chilling policy of terror designed to annihilate a people, not just wage war.

Israel's attempts to excuse the mass murder of civilians in Gaza as "collateral damage" fall apart in the face of mounting evidence that it employs deliberate sniper attacks. The targeted killing of unarmed people – using quadcopter drones and professional snipers – has restricted access to essential medical care, food, and water, exposing a chilling reality behind the occupation army’s actions.

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant are further testament to this not being a conventional war; it is a systematic targeting of civilians that points directly to genocidal intent.

Over the past year, debates have raged over what constitutes an “acceptable” level of collateral damage in Gaza. In July, the West Point US Military Academy's Modern War Institute even published a piece that argued for a more surgical approach to be taken by the Israelis.

Similar discussions that also surround what constitutes a “disproportionate use of force” are all predicated on Tel Aviv’s approach being one of a conventional war. However, if Israel’s intention is not to wage war against Hamas and is instead to intentionally commit genocide and ethnic cleansing, these conversations prove meaningless. And no clearer evidence exists than the cold-blooded targeting of civilians by sniper fire.

... today, these kinds of shootings are so commonplace that they even occur during live TV interviews with western news outlets. For example, in January, British broadcaster ITV captured the moment when 51-year-old Ramzi Abu Sahloul was shot through the chest, only moments after he had spoken on air. Sahloul was part of a group of civilians who were fleeing to Rafah in Gaza’s south while holding white flags on the orders of the Israeli military.

Another innocent civilian murdered while fleeing and with a white flag was Hala Khreis; she was shot and fatally wounded while holding her grandson's hand as they were walking. The incident was also caught on camera. A CNN investigation was able to prove that Israeli soldiers stationed nearby were responsible.
