Ireland’s Leader Leo Varadkar Pushes for New “Hate Speech” Laws

Ireland’s Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is using recent riots in Dublin to push for more online censorship laws and further restrictions to speech.

Thursday night in Dublin was marked by significant disturbances as various groups engaged in a riot, damaging storefronts, setting vehicles ablaze, and confronting law enforcement officers.

The chaos erupted in the city center, triggered by an earlier incident involving a knife attack against children by a perpetrator whose name has been kept out of the press but is said to be an immigrant to Ireland, having lived in the country for 20 years.

Authorities blamed the spread of “false information” as key factors contributing to the unrest and are now pushing a crackdown on online speech.

Varadkar pointed out that any new legislation would be carefully crafted to target only those actions that clearly incite violence and hatred, somehow without infringing upon the right to free speech.

“It’s now very obvious to anyone who would have doubted it that our incitement to hatred legislation is not up to date for the social media age,” Varadkar said.

Yet, Varadkar doesn’t specify who will be the arbiter of what constitutes “hatred.”

Varadkar reaffirmed his confidence in An Garda Síochána (the national police and security service of Ireland) and the justice system to deal with those responsible for criminal acts.

Ireland has already been working on new censorship laws for some time. The Irish Senate (Seanad) has already made several proposals and had numerous debates on the issue.

Biden Moves to Lift Restrictions on Israel’s Access to US Weapons Stockpile

A former State Department official said easing the restriction would 'essentially create a free-flowing pipeline' of weapons to Israel

President Biden is looking to remove restrictions on Israel’s access to weapons and ammunition stored in a US stockpile located in Israel, The Intercept reported on Saturday.

The US military maintains a reserve stockpile of arms in Israel known as the War Reserve Stockpile Allies-Israel (WRSA-I). Israel has been granted access to the WRSA-I during previous conflicts under a set of rules that the White House now wants to eliminate.

The White House included the lifting of the restrictions in its emergency supplemental request it made to Congress on October 20 for approximately $105 billion to fund military aid for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

Under the current restrictions, the US can only transfer weapons and ammunition to the WRSA-I that are “obsolete or surplus.” The White House’s request would eliminate that requirement and “allow for the transfer of all categories of defense articles.”

The request would scrap the requirement for Israel to make certain “concessions” to access the stockpile by giving the Pentagon “greater flexibility in determining the value of the concessions provided in exchange for the transfers.” It would remove congressional oversight by eliminating the requirement of providing 30-day notice before a weapons transfer.

US Bases In Iraq, Syria 'Plagued By Weapons Thefts': Report

Documents obtained by The Intercept reveal “sensitive weapons and equipment” have been stolen from US bases in Iraq and Syria

US military bases in Iraq and Syria are plagued by thefts of weapons and equipment, a report from The Intercept published on 26 November has shown.

Criminal investigation documents obtained by The Intercept via the Freedom of Information Act show that “multiple sensitive weapons and equipment” — including guided missile launch systems as well as drones — have been stolen in Iraq.

This follows hundreds of thousands of dollars in military equipment stolen from US troops in Iraq and Syria between 2020 and 2022, as reported previously by The Intercept.

Officials in Washington claim the US bases in Iraq and Syria are needed to conduct “counter-ISIS missions,” but Russian and Syrian officials have said that US forces support ISIS, which continues to target the Syrian army.

Groups like Amnesty International and Conflict Armament Research also found that a substantial portion of the weapons used by ISIS during the Syria war between 2014 and 2018 were either US-made or US-purchased.

The US military could not account for $715.8 million of military equipment distributed in 2017 and 2018 to Syrian armed groups allegedly fighting ISIS.

US officials have also acknowledged the Syrian and Iraqi bases are needed to maintain the US occupation of large swathes of northeastern Syria, where most of the country’s oil lies. This gives US officials leverage against the Syrian government and hinders reconstruction following more than a decade of war.
