Will US Military Assets In West Asia Become Iran's Next Target?

With growing US involvement in the escalating war in West Asia and Iran’s expanding missile and cyber capabilities, could Washington’s military, economy, and security be at stake?

Last month, Frank McKenzie, a retired US Marine Corps general, emphasized in a report published by the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA): “The nature of the threat in the Middle East has changed significantly since US bases were first placed, many decades ago. The core threat – now more than ever – is Iran.”

Washington understands that its regional allies may not remain neutral if tensions escalate due to the aggressive policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor which American assets might become targets for Tehran in any possible confrontation. Washington’s influence in West Asia spans a network of military, economic, political, and media interests, all of which are potentially at risk.

Changing times, evolving threats

The role of US military bases has evolved significantly over time. Originally intended to counter Soviet influence, the bases gained renewed importance after the fall of the Shah of Iran and the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

These bases remained central to US defense strategy, particularly in preventing the Soviets from gaining a foothold in the Persian Gulf. The geographic distribution of US bases in the region was specifically designed to confront the Soviet Union, concentrating on strategic locations. However, following the Soviet Union’s collapse and the subsequent US invasion of Iraq, American strategic priorities in West Asia shifted dramatically.

UK Tightens Grip On Internet Speech With Push For Swift Online Speech Crackdown

UK’s Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle has written to the country’s media and telecommunications regulator Ofcom, asking it to implement what he said are “key components” of the Online Safety Act.

These components of the legislation – also known as the UK’s online censorship law – will come into effect by the end of 2024, Kyle noted in his letter to Ofcom Chief Executive Melanie Dawes.

Kyle urged Ofcom to implement these rules as a matter of urgency – Dawes is reminded that the government views this as “incredibly important” and something that needs to be implemented “as soon as possible” by the regulator.

The letter also reveals that these officials already had meetings dedicated to the issue – a “discussion” that Kyle said he wants to continue in order to see how the government can “support Ofcom in delivering on this ambition.”

The need for this to happen is explained by the secretary of state as necessary in making sure that services covered by Ofcom are held responsible for delivering “products safe for their users.”

Kyle cites illegal harms and child safety codes as more “protections” that will be finalized next year, which include age verification (“age-checks”). Internet users, and children in particular, will then, according to Kyle, be protected from a flurry of horrors: he mentions suicide, self-harm, pornography, terrorism, “hate speech,” misogyny, and harassment.

BREAKING: Israel announces it will start BOMBING BANKS in Lebanon. Yes, banks. And financial institutions. Any organization that Israel decides is "linked" to Hezbollah will be bombed into oblivion by Israel, using U.S. weapons. So this is what Israel has decided on now, bombing CIVILIAN INFRASTRUCTURE. So if Israel thinks that Hezbollah fighters got a drink of water from the municipal water supply, they will bomb the water plants. If they used electricity from the power grid, Israel will bomb the power grid substations. If Hezbollah used boats in a port, Israel will bomb the port. This is Israel's latest insane escalation, and it's one more reason why the entire world now sees Israel as pure evil, VILE, violent, wicked and at odds with fundamental human civilization. The U.S. needs to de-militarize Israel and stop sending money and weapons. The UN needs to reverse recognition of Israel and cancel its charter as a nation. From news.Sky.com:

9/24 — Russia in Satellite Deal with West African Military Governments

Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have announced a deal with Russia which will see them acquire telecoms and surveillance satellites.

The three West African countries, run by military juntas, have been struggling to defeat Islamist insurgencies for years and have turned to Russia for military support.

Russia denies that its mercenaries have committed atrocities against civilians and that it is pushing propaganda and misinformation in West Africa's Sahel region.

Ministers from the three countries met officials from Russia’s aerospace agency Roscosmos in Mali’s capital, Bamako, on Monday, to discuss the agreement.

The technology will boost border surveillance and national security in all three countries, says Mali’s Finance Minister, Alousséni Sanou, adding that it would enable secure communications.

Islamist insurgents roam across the three countries' long, porous borders in the vast semi-arid Sahel region south of the Sahara Desert.

Sanou also said the satellites would help them to monitor and respond to floods, droughts, fires and other emergencies.

Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso last year formed the Alliance of Sahel States - it was originally to boost military co-operation, but has since broadened.

originally to boost military co-operation, but has since broadened.

They have hailed the remote-sensing satellite project as crucial for their security strategy, just days after Islamist militants attacked an airport in Bamako - far from the areas where the jihadists normally launch their assaults.

Ministers say the telecoms satellite will facilitate the broadcast of television and radio signals across their three countries.

It is also expected to provide internet and telephone services in inaccessible and underdeveloped areas within the Sahel.

Russia has been seeking to expand its footprint in Africa, especially in the Sahel, since relations between these countries and their Western allies broke down.

HISTORIC BRICS Summit in Two Days — Oct 22 - 24

Since I first talking about the Rise of BRICS and a China / Russia axis as a result of the US's non-tolerance of neutrality over Ukraine, in March 2022, BRICS has become the talk of the town world. Now, even its opponents can't help but acknowledge the rise of BRICS.

Carnegie Endowment:
BRICS Expansion, the G20, and the Future of World Order — 10/9/24

This month, Russian President Vladimir Putin will host the first-ever summit of BRICS+ from October 22 to 24 in the Tatarstan city of Kazan.

There, the founding members of BRICS... will formally welcome into their fold five new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Putin has also invited more than two dozen other countries that have applied for or are considering membership in the expanding club. The gathering is meant to send an unmistakable signal: Despite the West’s best efforts to isolate it, Russia has many friends around the world.

To some in the West, the emergence of BRICS+ suggests something even more ominous—a world that is fragmenting into competing blocs, thanks to intensifying geopolitical rivalry between East and West and growing mutual alienation between North and South.
... Beijing and Moscow are intent on exploiting some countries’ resentment of the United States and its wealthy world allies to consolidate an anti-Western counterweight to the venerable Group of 7 ... Of particular concern is the future of the Group of 20 (G20). Even before BRICS expansion, it had become a microcosm of growing global rifts. A further hardening of these divisions would undercut the G20’s fundamental raison d'être: namely, to help bridge gulfs between—and leverage the capabilities of—important countries that are not inherently or necessarily like-minded.

These risks are real, but they should be kept in perspective. No doubt, BRICS expansion evinces a growing global dissatisfaction with and a determination to challenge the structural advantages that advanced market democracies continue to enjoy in a global order that was in many respects made by the West, for the West. Reducing those exorbitant privileges, including by creating alternative, parallel institutions, is the fundamental purpose of BRICS+...

9/24 — Burkina Faso Junta Speaks of Coup Plot After Criticism Over Jihadi Massacres

Burkina Faso's junta said it had uncovered an international plot to overthrow it and which included the massacre in August of hundreds of civilians by Islamist insurgents.

Some critics and analysts however said the junta's statement was an attempt to deflect blame for the killings and security situation in the country.

The junta came to power in a 2022 coup pledging to beat back jihadists who have ravaged the landlocked West African country for years.
But instead violence has increased, leaving the regime worried about popular discontent, its critics and analysts say.

In the worst of a recent surge of attacks, insurgents affiliated with al Qaeda slaughtered hundreds of people who were digging defensive trenches around the town of Barsalogho on Aug. 24, prompting an unusually open outpouring of anger and grief.

The junta has said little about the massacre, ignoring calls for the military to take responsibility for having ordered civilians to dig trenches without protection in an area rife with jihadist activity.

In a lengthy statement late on Monday, interim security minister Mahamadou Sana said the Barsalogho attack was a first step meant to create chaos and facilitate the infiltration of "several terrorist groups" into the capital Ouagadougou.

The statement accused opponents of the junta, backed by Western intelligence and European mercenaries, of a vast, multi-pronged destabilisation plot orchestrated from other countries including Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria.... Al Qaeda-affiliated group that claimed responsibility for Barsalogho.

Burkina Faso Plans To Withdraw Some Mining Permits, Junta Leader Says | Reuters 10/5

Burkina Faso plans to withdraw mining permits from some foreign companies and will seek to produce more of its own gold, junta leader Ibrahim Traore said on Saturday, without specifying which permits could be cancelled.

"We know how to mine our gold and I don't understand why we're going to let multinationals come and mine it
," Traore said in a radio address to mark two years since he seized power in a coup.

"In fact, we are going to withdraw mining permits," he said. He did not specify which permits or provide further detail.

Gold is the main export of the West African country, where frustration over a long-running security crisis helped bring the junta to power in 2022. Since then, it has severed longstanding ties with Western allies and sought closer relations with Russia.

London-listed Endeavour Mining, Australia-based West African Resources, Russia's Nordgold, and Canada's Orezone Gold Corporation operate in Burkina Faso.

Operations have been complicated by growing insecurity. Despite the junta promising to contain groups linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State, the country saw a severe escalation of deadly attacks in 2023, with more than 8,000 people reportedly killed, according to U.S.-based crisis-monitoring group ACLED.

Massacre in Burkina Faso Left 600 Dead, Double Previous Estimates, According To French Security Assessment | CNN 10/4

Up to 600 people were shot dead in a matter of hours by al Qaeda-linked militants in an August attack on a town in Burkina Faso, according to a French government security assessment that nearly doubles the death toll cited in earlier reports. The new figure would make the assault, in which civilians were shot dead as they dug trenches to defend the remote town of Barsalogho, one of the deadliest single attacks in Africa in recent decades.

Militants from Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al Qaeda affiliate based in Mali and active in Burkina Faso, opened fire methodically as they swept into the outskirts of Barsalogho on motorcycles and shot down villagers, who lay helpless in the freshly upturned dirt of the trench, according to several videos of the August 24 attack posted by pro-JNIM accounts on social media. Many of the dead were women and children, and the footage is punctuated by the sound of automatic gunfire and screams of victims as they are shot while apparently trying to play dead.

The horrific death toll, if the French government estimate is confirmed, would mark an unusually brutal moment in the Sahel, an increasingly lawless swathe of West Africa just south of the Sahara where security projects spearheaded by the United States and French militaries have struggled to slow the march of jihadists. A series of coups across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger led to the departure of French and American forces. The Russian mercenaries summoned by the juntas to bolster their grip have instead left a vacuum in which jihadists have thrived, says the assessment, given to CNN by a French security official.

The United Nations initially estimated the death toll was at least 200. JNIM said it had killed nearly 300 people but claimed it had targeted militia members affiliated with the army, rather than civilians, according to a translation by Site Intelligence Group cited by Reuters.
