Times of Israel: Hostage Deal Talks Likely Off Until After US Elections — Report

After a reported meeting between Shin Bet director Ronen Bar and Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel in Cairo yesterday ended without a breakthrough, hostage deal talks are only likely to resume after the US elections on November 5, according to the Qatari-owned al-Araby al-Jadeed paper.

Two top intelligence officials concur that at the current time, it will be difficult to reach a ceasefire deal in Gaza or a hostage and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel, Hamas and other Palestinian factions.

Bar and Kamel also reportedly talked about security arrangements on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, to be implemented should a hostage deal be reached. The paper reports that they discussed the possible deployment of international or Arab forces along the Netzarim and the Philadelphi axes, including Egypt’s participation in the latter, but Cairo insists that Israel withdraw from the Gazan side of the Egypt-Gaza border area.

As Tel Aviv prepares to escalate its war with an attack on Iran, concerns are growing about Israel's depleting stock of interceptor missiles

❗️On Monday, UN Security council stressed ‘strong concern’ over UNIFIL positions coming under fire in south Lebanon, calling on “all parties” to respect the safety and security of its personnel and premises.

Since the start of Israel’s ground incursions into Lebanon on 1 October, UNIFIL positions have been attacked at least 20 times,injuring at least five troops. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said “the source of the gunfire has yet to be confirmed by UNIFIL,” although Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah previously made it clear that it would not fire on Israeli forces hiding behind UNIFIL positions.

This comes a day after Benjamin Netanyahu demanded that UNIFIL withdraw from Lebanon. France rejected the demand.

Palestinians Blast German FM For Claiming Israel Has ‘Right To Kill Civilians’

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said civilian sites in Gaza lose protected status because ‘terrorists abuse it’

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement released a statement on 16 October strongly condemning comments made by Germany’s foreign minister in defense of Israel’s killing of Palestinian civilians.

“These statements represent a dangerous justification for targeting civilian sites under the pretext of the presence of armed elements in these sites, cover up the crimes of the occupation that targets civilians, and provide an immoral justification for indiscriminate attacks,” PIJ said.

The statement goes on to say that civilian infrastructure must never lose its protected status, regardless of what Israel claims.

“Germany should have reconsidered its position and reviewed its policies towards supporting the occupation, and followed the approach of other European countries that announced the cessation of supplying the occupation with weapons. Supporting the occupation militarily in light of these crimes against civilians makes Germany complicit in human rights violations,” it added.

It also brought up Israeli crimes against civilians in Lebanon and blasted Berlin for not condemning them, along with Israeli attacks on UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping troops in the country.

'Israel Can Always Rely On German Arms Deliveries': Scholz

Senior officials in Berlin have come under fire for saying Israel 'has the right' to kill civilians

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on 16 October promised that Germany would “always” continue delivering arms to Israel for its war against Lebanon and the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

“There are deliveries and there will always be further deliveries. Israel can rely on that,” Scholz said in remarks to parliament, adding that Germany must keep Israel “in a position to defend its country”.

“Israel can rely on our solidarity – now and in the future,” he stressed.

Scholz's speech came one day after opposition leader Friedrich Merz called on the chancellor to explain why Berlin “just recently” started approving export licenses to send German-made munitions to Israel “at very short notice.”

His statements came a few days after German daily Bild reported that since March, Germany had not approved “a single license for arms exports to Israel.”

A recent poll shows most Israelis support ending the Israel-Hamas War, prioritizing hostage return over toppling Hamas.

A majority of Israelis think that it is time to end the Israel-Hamas War, according to a recent Israel Democracy Institute poll.

Approximately 53% of the total sample, 45% of Jews, and 93% of Arabs think that it is time to end the war, according to the poll, whereas 43% of Jews, 5% of Arabs, and 36% of the total sample think that it is not time to end the war.

When asked what the main reason the war should be ended is, 53% of Israelis said that it should be ended because its “continuation endangers the hostages.” Fifty-six percent of Jews and 45% of Arabs said that the hostages were the main reason that the war should be ended.

The next largest group, 16%, said that the war should be ended to enable Israel’s leadership and the IDF to focus their attention on the northern front.

Fifteen percent of Jews and 11% of Arabs said that the war should be ended because “the fighting has already achieved most of what can be achieved.”
