July 2023 Flashback: Erdogan’s ‘Disruptive’ Policies On Russia, China, Iran & Syria Frustrates The West; Will Turkey Be Ejected From NATO?

It looks unlikely that Turkey, which is allegedly getting increasingly Islamized and has an unsavory image of being a “fickle ally,” will remove its objection to Sweden being allowed as a NATO member so easily..., the issue of Sweden’s membership at the forthcoming NATO summit, set for July 11-12 in the Latvian capital Riga, may require harder efforts toward an amicable resolution.

It may be noted that Turkey ratified, not without reluctance, though, Finland’s NATO accession in March. But it continues to raise objections to Sweden’s membership...

It may be noted that Turkey is one of the oldest members of NATO. Its accession to the Western alliance was way back in 1952. But over the recent years, particularly after Erdogan assumed office, Turkey is now considered the “most isolated” in NATO.

Let alone the accession of first Finland and now Sweden, Turkey has had differences with many NATO objectives and principles. Turkey is reported to be not in consonance with a new “defense strategy,” said to be the most ambitious overhaul to be drafted since the end of the Cold War.

This strategy, drafted in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is supposed to be given the green light by the leaders during the forthcoming NATO summit in two weeks.However, in their meeting in Brussels on June 15, NATO defense ministers failed to agree on new plans for how the alliance would respond to a Russian attack. According to Reuters, Turkey was the one that blocked the move.

Quoting an unnamed diplomat, the Reuters report said that Turkey blocked approval over the wording of geographical locations, including concerning Cyprus....

As it is, Turkey has a dispute over maritime rights with Greece. It threatens to attack Greece, though both are NATO members. “We may suddenly come one night,” Erdogan warned not long ago, suggesting a Turkish operation against one of the Greek islands that hug Turkey’s southern and western coast. He has even hinted that Turkey can strike Athens with ballistic missiles.

Turkey and Greece, or for that matter, the European Union (EU), also have differences over the status of Cyprus. The island has remained divided since 1974 between the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot administration and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, protected by Turkish troops and recognized solely by Ankara.

Cyprus is a member of the EU, but Turkey has blocked its membership in NATO and refuses to acknowledge its legitimacy. Cyprus, in turn, has blocked Turkey’s move to become a member of the EU (membership in both the EU and NATO depends on the consensus of all who are already members). Tensions between Turkey and Cyprus have been further heightened over exploration and production rights for natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey has also quarreled with France...

Many argue that Turkey is increasingly “a disruptive ally” within NATO. Despite warnings from fellow NATO members in general and the US in particular, Erdogan went ahead with purchasing an S-400 air-defense system from Russia.

The US canceled the proposed sale of F-35 fighters to Turkey in retaliation. The US and fellow NATO members had a point that Buying the Russian S-400 would complicate their integrated defense systems...

As the Economist magazine says, “From the war in Ukraine to those in Syria and Nagorno-Karabakh, to relations with China, to sanctions against Iran, to press freedoms, human rights, and terrorism, the list of issues where Turkey and its Western allies no longer see eye to eye is long."

“The institutional links, including membership in NATO and the Council of Europe and the customs union with the EU, are intact. But in policies, a decoupling is underway.

In 2008 Turkey aligned itself with 88% of the EU’s foreign-policy decisions and declarations. By 2016 that share had fallen by half to 44%. Last year it was only 7%.”

Israel Must Stop Persecuting Journalists And Criminalizing The Profession | Haaretz Editorial

Israel's determination to prevent any possibility that its citizens be exposed to journalistic information that doesn't fit its national narrative first became evident even before the war began. But it has been far more evident since October 7, 2023. And in its battle over the boundaries of its citizens' consciousness, the state seems to have marked Palestinian journalists as a target and views journalistic coverage as enemy behavior.

Sunday morning, the police arrested two Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem, both journalists are employed by a Turkish broadcaster...

According to their lawyer, they were arrested because of their journalistic work. Nor did the officers claim that the two had done anything unconnected to that work... The police told their lawyer they are suspected of behavior likely to disturb the peace. Apparently, the government and its enforcement agency hold the warped view that exposing the public to content that they don't control disturbs the peace. Harming journalists means harming freedom of expression, freedom of the press and freedom of occupation. But it also always harms the public's right to know....

Report: US Gives Israel Until After The US Election To Ease Starving Of Palestinians

The Biden administration has given Israel until after the US presidential election to ease the starving of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to a letter obtained by Axios .

The letter, written by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, was sent on Sunday and gave Israel 30 days to allow more aid deliveries into Gaza and take other steps to improve humanitarian conditions.

The letter says that a failure to implement these measures may have “implications for US policy under NSM-20 and relevant US law (weapons supply),” referring to foreign assistance laws that prohibit US military aid to countries blocking aid deliveries.

US government agencies had previously concluded Israel was deliberately blocking aid , but Blinken overrode those concerns to ensure US weapons continued to flow to Israel.

The letter comes two weeks after Israel cut off all aid deliveries to northern Gaza and ordered the estimated 300,000 to 400,000 Palestinians in the area to evacuate to the south. Israeli media has reported that Israel is carrying out a “scaled-down” version of the “general’s plan,” which would result in the complete ethnic cleansing of northern Gaza and the extermination of anyone who stayed behind.

Even before Israel began implementing the plan, aid deliveries into Gaza reached an all-time low. “The amount of assistance entering Gaza in September was the lowest of any month during the past year,” Blinken and Austin said in the letter.

Haaretz: 'Israeli Society Needs To Be Rebuilt From Scratch – And Care For Its Citizens And Soldiers'

Hadar Goldin was killed by Hamas in the 2014 Gaza war, and his body has been held captive ever since. His father sensed early on that 'something was broken' in Israeli society when it failed to bring his son home, and says that what happened on Oct. 7 was the ultimate 'disintegration of Israeli society'

Prof. Simha Goldin's concerns about Israeli society didn't start in the past year. They began a decade ago, when his son Hadar was killed in a Hamas ambush in Rafah during a humanitarian pause in the 2014 Gaza war. The body of Hadar, a 23-year-old in the Israeli army's Givati Brigade, was taken to Gaza along with that of a second soldier, Oron Shaul.

...After seeing how Israel was paralyzed following the 2011 prisoner exchange agreement between Netanyahu and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, the family "didn't think it was necessary to make kidnapped soldiers, dead or alive, part of a deal," he says...

Instead, "Hamas had to understand that kidnapped soldiers were going to be a burden on it – that if there was something it wanted, it would only get it in exchange for returning the hostages."

"We called it a campaign of values, and showed how Hadar and Oron could be brought back. Of course, if there is a possibility of an agreement in the future, I wouldn't rule it out. But whatever Hamas wants, don't reject it – rather, give it [to them] in exchange for hostages."

For example, he says, if Hamas wanted more than four hours a day of electricity in Gaza, Israel need not threaten to reduce it, but offer more in exchange for the return of the soldiers. "The prime minister promised that this is what they were doing," he recalls being told at the time...

"Our sense that something was broken was accurate. We appealed to the prime minister – most of the time Netanyahu but also [Naftali] Bennett – to defense ministers and the chiefs of staff. For nine-and-half years we said, you're not bringing back the soldiers, and that was a sign that something was wrong," he says....

"Israeli society needs to be rebuilt from scratch. What happened on Simchat Torah [October 7] was the disintegration of Israeli society and its components," says Goldin.

"Unfortunately, the only group that speaks with our voice are the people who go into battle, regular [conscripted] soldiers and reservists," Goldin added. "They know what kind of society we must be. But the reality is that we are a minority, which is being ignored because of the war. A protest movement of the positive kind hasn't arisen either, because they are busy fighting."

Israeli society, he says, "must decide if it is a society that sacrifices its hostages or brings them home. A society needs to be one that cares for its citizens and soldiers.

"The counter-arguments offered – that they will send terrorists and that the whole Arab world will attack us – have nothing to do with reality. But the fear they instill is so effective that nothing can be done about it.

"If you say that you want Hamas to be eliminated and in the same breath that the hostages must be brought home – they say, with whom will you negotiate? They are using their ability to scare us to maintain the status quo."

Do They Want American Troops To Die?

Biden Administration mismanagement – or worse – from day one of the latest Israeli multi-front war in the Middle East has led us to where we are today, at the brink of an all-out regional war with some 40,000 US troops and multiple US military bases in the region with targets on their back.

Biden’s blank check to Israel after the attacks of October 7, 2023, to launch multiple wars against its neighbors and carry out the mass murder of Palestinian civilians in Gaza has drawn the US right into the middle of a bubbling cauldron of WWIII. And rather than take a sober look at actual US national security interests, Biden and his neocon incompetents are busy adding fuel to the fire hanging on to the pipe dream that they could do what they failed to do so many times before: remake the Middle East in their neocon image.

According to an article in Politico this past week , while Biden Administration officials publicly urged restraint and a reduction in violence, they privately were working with the Israeli government to encourage a widening of Israel’s military operations to include its northern neighbor, Lebanon. Two top Biden Administration officials, Amos Hochstein and Brett McGurk, urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to shift Israel’s military focus from the already-flattened Gaza northward to Lebanon.

As Politico reports:

Behind the scenes, Hochstein, McGurk and other top U.S. national security officials are describing Israel’s Lebanon operations as a history-defining moment — one that will reshape the Middle East for the better for years to come.

Where have we heard this kind of “let’s do war to re-shape the Middle East” argument before? As Wikileaks reminds us, appearing before the US Congress in 2002 and urging the US to attack Iraq, Netanyahu himself promised that “If you take out Saddam, Saddam’s regime, I guarantee you that it will have enormous positive reverberations on the region.”

Yeah, Bibi. How’d that work out for us?

So why is it that 22 years later senior US officials are echoing Netanyahu’s bogus 2002 lies to draw the US into another “history-defining” catastrophe in the Middle East? For Hochstein it might be that he is not the unbiased “honest broker” we need to keep us out of unnecessary war. After all, as the New York Times reminds us, Hochstein was born in Israel, had/has Israeli citizenship, and even served in the Israeli Defense Forces!

Pentagon Confirms US Troops To Operate Thaad Missile Defense In Israel

The Iranian foreign minister warned that US military leaders are 'risking their soldiers' lives by sending US troops to defend Israel

The US military will send a missile defense battery and troops to operate it in Israel, the Pentagon said on 13 October, amid warnings from Iran that Washington should keep all US military forces out of Israel.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorized the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery at the direction of President Joe Biden, the Pentagon said in a statement.

The US is seeking to help bolster Israel’s air defenses following a large-scale Iranian ballistic missile attack on Israeli airbases on 1 October. Tehran launched the ballistic missile barrage in retaliation for multiple aggressions carried out by Tel Aviv, including the assassinations of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in July and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on 27 September.

“This action underscores the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran,” Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi delivered a warning to US leaders in a statement on X, saying they were risking their soldiers’ lives by sending them to Israel.

On Monday, Israeli warplanes carried out an attack on a small apartment building in the northern Lebanese village of Aitou, in the Christian-majority Zgharta District. At least 22 people have been killed in the attack, according to the Lebanese Red Cross, which also wounded at least eight.

There has been no official comment from the Israeli military on why they attacked the Christian-majority village. That’s not unusual when the Israeli strike doesn’t appear to have had any military target or purpose.

Speculation is that the attack was primarily a revenge attack against Lebanon in general after a Sunday drone strike by Hezbollah against a northern Israeli military base killed four soldiers and wounded scores of others.

Alternatively, Israeli media has been speculating that the attack, again on a Christian village, “ may have targeted a senior Hezbollah leader. ” There has been no official sign that was the case, nor indeed are those making such speculation offering any name of the potential Hezbollah figure being targeted.

This northern part of Lebanon has not been considered militarily significant throughout the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict, and there hadn’t been an Israeli attack anywhere near this area since the 2006 war.

Israel Renews Bombardment Of Lebanese Capital After Six-Day Pause

The attacks come a day after Lebanon’s prime minister said he received assurances from the US that Israel would ‘reduce’ its strikes on Beirut

Israel renewed its bombardment of Beirut’s southern suburb on 16 October, a day after Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati claimed Washington gave him assurances that Tel Aviv would “reduce” its attacks on the capital.

The attacks mark the first Israeli strikes on the capital since over 100 were killed and injured in brutal raids on central Beirut on 10 October.

Israeli warplanes raided the Haret Hreik area in Beirut's southern suburb on Wednesday morning, hitting the neighborhood's Shura area, according to Al Mayadeen’s correspondent.

Two other airstrikes hit the suburb, including one which hit a building near a school. Tel Aviv issued new evacuation orders for Lebanese civilians in Haret Hreik.

“During our contacts with the American authorities last week, we received a kind of guarantee to reduce the escalation in the southern suburbs and Beirut,” Mikati said in a statement on 15 October. The prime minister did not elaborate further but added that the US is “serious about pressuring Israel to reach a ceasefire.” [Bull F$@&!#%💩, see related reading]

A State Department spokesman said on Tuesday that Washington has “concerns” and is “opposed to” the “scope and nature” of Israel's bombing campaign in Beirut.

Israel refrained from attacking Beirut in the days after it killed over 22 and injured more than 100 in Beirut’s Ras al-Naba and Al-Nuwairi neighborhoods in an attack that was said to be targeting the head of Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit Wafiq Safa. Conflicting reports of Safa's survival and absence from the area have since circulated.

...The renewed Israeli attacks on the Lebanese capital come one day after a speech made by Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem, his third speech since the assassination of secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah on 27 September.

During the speech, Qassem vowed that only a comprehensive ceasefire, including Gaza, would bring Israel’s northern settlers back to their settlements.
