Former CIA chief and defense secretary Leon Panetta says the mass detonation of Hezbollah communication devices, widely attributed to Israel is “a form of terrorism.”

“This has gone right into the supply chain. When you have terror going into the supply chain, it makes people ask the question, ‘What the hell is next?’ This is a tactic that has repercussions, and we really don’t know what those repercussions are going to be,” he continues.

S&P Joins Moody's In Downgrading Israel Credit Rating
The downgrade came after Israel escalated its war on Lebanon and was determined even before Iran's massive retaliatory missile barrage on Israel Tuesday night
Global credit rating agency S&P abruptly downgraded Israel's credit rating from A+ to A on 2 October following Israel's escalation of its war on Lebanon in recent weeks, warning that it could lead to a prolonged and intense conflict.
The S&P had not been scheduled to release its updated report on Israel's credit rating for another five weeks.
“The unscheduled announcement was due to the significant rise in Israel's geopolitical and security risks,” the report stated.
The downgrade was announced early Wednesday but was decided even before Iran's unprecedented retaliatory attack on Israel Tuesday night. Iranian forces launched some 180 ballistic missiles at three separate Israeli airbases as Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system struggled to intercept.
S&P warned that Israel's wars on Gaza and Lebanon, including a possible ground operation in Lebanon, could last into 2025.

Sen. Marco Rubio said he supports Israel launching a 'disproportionate' attack in response
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Tuesday called for the US to coordinate with Israel on strikes against Iranian oil refineries in response to the Iranian missile attack on Israel, which came in retaliation for Israeli escalations in the region.
“This missile attack against Israel should be the breaking point, and I would urge the Biden Administration to coordinate an overwhelming response with Israel, starting with Iran’s ability to refine oil,” Graham said in a statement.
“These oil refineries need to be hit and hit hard because that is the source of cash for the regime to perpetrate their terror,” he added.
The hawkish senator also said that he spoke with former President Donald Trump about the Iranian attack. “I spoke with President Trump earlier today, and he is determined and resolved to protect Israel from the threats of terrorism emanating from Iran. I can assure you Iran attacks Israel at their own peril,” Graham wrote on X.
Other Republicans in Congress expressed support for Israeli action against Iran, including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).
...Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the missile attack was a response to the killings of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, the killing of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, and Abbas Nilforoushan, an IRGC commander who was killed alongside Nasrallah.

The US Privately Encouraged Israel To Escalate In Lebanon
POLITICO reports that US officials Brett McGurk and Amos Hochstein, an IDF veteran, told Israeli officials they agreed with the plan to escalate
POLITICO reported on Monday that despite the Biden administration’s public calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon, White House officials privately told Israeli officials that they agreed with the plan to escalate in Lebanon and shift its focus to the north.
The report, which cited US and Israeli officials, said the message was delivered by Brett McGurk, the top Middle East official on the National Security Council, and Amos Hochstein, an Israeli-born veteran of the Israeli Defense Forces who works as a special advisor for President Biden.
The report said that Israel told the US of its plans to focus on Lebanon but didn’t offer much detail, and McGurk and Hochstein “relayed to their Israeli counterparts that — while they still urged a cautious approach — the timing was likely opportune for such a move, especially after Hezbollah had been significantly degraded in the months prior.”
The report contradicts public claims from US officials that they have been seeking a ceasefire in Lebanon and are working toward a diplomatic solution. But US actions have shown they do support Israel’s actions in Lebanon, as the Biden administration gave Israel $8.7 billion in new military aid amid the dramatic escalation.
The POLITICO report said that McGurk, Hochstein, and other top US officials are describing the war in Lebanon “as a history-defining moment — one that will reshape the Middle East for the better for years to come.”

Physicists Showed That Photons Can Seem To Exit A Material Before Entering It, Revealing Observational Evidence Of Negative Time
Quantum physicists are familiar with wonky, seemingly nonsensical phenomena: atoms and molecules sometimes act as particles, sometimes as waves; particles can be connected to one another by a “spooky action at a distance,” even over great distances; and quantum objects can detach themselves from their properties like the Cheshire Cat from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland detaches itself from its grin. Now researchers led by Daniela Angulo of the University of Toronto have revealed another oddball quantum outcome: photons, wave-particles of light, can spend a negative amount of time zipping through a cloud of chilled atoms. In other words, photons can seem to exit a material before entering it.
“It took a positive amount of time, but our experiment observing that photons can make atoms seem to spend a *negative* amount of time in the excited state is up!” wrote Aephraim Steinberg, a physicist at the University of Toronto, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) about the new study, which was uploaded to the preprint server arXiv.org on September 5 and has not yet been peer-reviewed.
The idea for this work emerged in 2017. At the time, Steinberg and a lab colleague, then doctoral student Josiah Sinclair, were interested in the interaction of light and matter, specifically a phenomenon called atomic excitation: when photons pass through a medium and get absorbed, electrons swirling around atoms in that medium jump to higher energy levels. When these excited electrons lapse to their original state, they release that absorbed energy as reemitted photons, introducing a time delay in the light’s observed transit time through the medium.
Sinclair’s team wanted to measure that time delay (which is sometimes technically called a “group delay”) and learn whether it depends on the fate of that photon: Was it scattered and absorbed inside the atomic cloud, or was it transmitted with no interaction whatsoever? “At the time, we weren’t sure what the answer was, and we felt like such a basic question about something so fundamental should be easy to answer,” Sinclair says. “But the more people we talked to, the more we realized that while everyone had their own intuition or guess, there was no expert consensus on what the right answer would be.” Because the nature of these delays can be so strange and counterintuitive, some researchers had written the phenomenon off as effectively meaningless for describing any physical property associated with light.
After three years of planning, his team developed an apparatus to test this question in the lab. Their experiments involved shooting photons through a cloud of ultracold rubidium atoms and measuring the resulting degree of atomic excitation. Two surprises emerged from the experiment: Sometimes photons would pass through unscathed, yet the rubidium atoms would still become excited—and for just as long as if they had absorbed those photons. Stranger still, when photons were absorbed, they would seem to be reemitted almost instantly, well before the rubidium atoms returned to their ground state—as if the photons, on average, were leaving the atoms quicker than expected.
The team then collaborated with Howard Wiseman, a theoretical and quantum physicist at Griffith University in Australia, to devise an explanation. The theoretical framework that emerged showed that the time these transmitted photons spent as an atomic excitation matched perfectly with the expected group delay acquired by the light—even for cases where it seemed as though the photons were reemitted before the atomic excitation had ebbed.

Israel Planning Major Attack On Iran
The US is coordinating with Israel on its plans
Israel is planning to launch a “significant retaliation” attack against Iran over the Iranian missile barrage that targeted Israel on Tuesday, which was a response to several Israeli escalations in the region. Israeli officials acknowledged to Axios that the situation could lead to a full-blown regional war, which would involve the US.
According to the Axios report, Israel could target oil production facilities inside Iran or other strategic sites. Israeli officials say that if Iran hits back, then all options will be on the table, including strikes on Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities.
“We have a big question mark about how the Iranians are going to respond to an attack, but we take into consideration the possibility that they would go all in, which will be a whole different ball game,” an Israeli official told Axios .
Other options being considered are attacks on Iran’s air defenses or targeted assassinations. Israel has a history of killing people inside Iran, including the July 31 assassination of Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh.
Israel would likely need US military support to launch significant strikes on Iranian territory, and the US officials speaking to Axios say they are coordinating with the Biden administration. Israel wants more US support if it provokes another Iranian attack.

Former PM reveals in his memoir security team found the listening equipment when Israeli prime minister used his personal toilet in 2017
Office after it had been used by Benjamin Netanyahu, the former Prime Minister has claimed.
Mr Johnson has alleged that when the Israeli Prime Minister visited his department in 2017, his security team found bugging devices in the toilets after he had used the facilities.
During their meeting in his old office, Mr Johnson says Mr Netanyahu, who he calls Bibi, excused himself to go to the bathroom, which Mr Johnson describes as similar to “the gents in a posh London club” which exist within a “secret annexe”.
In his book, ‘Unleashed’, Mr Johnson writes: “Thither Bibi repaired for a while, and it may or may not be a coincidence but I am told that later, when they were doing a regular sweep for bugs, they found a listening device in the thunderbox.”
When asked during an interview with The Telegraph if he could give any more detail on what happened, Mr Johnson said: “I think everything you need to know about that episode is in the book.”
It is not clear whether Israel was questioned or rebuked over the incident.
Around a similar time, Israel was accused of planting listening devices in the White House.
According to US officials, Washington concluded that Israel was likely behind the placement of cellphone surveillance devices that were found near the White House and other sensitive locations around the capital.
Although having never worked in Mossad, Israel’s spy agency, Mr Netanyahu is known to have worked closely with them.
As the second-largest espionage agency in the Western world after the CIA, it focuses on foreign intelligence gathering and covert operations.
During the meeting with Mr Netanyahu, Mr Johnson, then the foreign secretary, describes how he felt like “Willy Wonka” as he showed him around his place of work in what was his first visit to the Foreign Office.

Mossad accused of bugging Donald Trump
Mossad was accused of placing listening devices near the White House in 2018 to eavesdrop on Donald Trump.
Three former US officials told Politico that Israel had been identified by the FBI as the culprit behind the placing of a number of miniature devices in Washington D.C.
One official told the outlet that the gadgets, which monitored mobile telephone traffic, were likely intended to spy on the then-president.

At least one member of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) was killed and four paramedics were injured on 3 October when the Israeli air force bombed a Red Cross convoy traveling near the village of Taybeh in south Lebanon as they were evacuating wounded people from the region.
The Lebanese Red Cross announced that the humanitarian convoy was targeted despite coordinating its movements with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The LAF said a second soldier was injured in the attack.
"One soldier was killed and another injured in an attack by Israeli forces while conducting an evacuation and rescue mission in collaboration with the Lebanese Red Cross in the town of Taybeh, Marjaayoun," the LAf said in their statement.
The indiscriminate Israeli attack came just hours after an Islamic Health Authority team was hit by an airstrike in central Beirut, killing seven paramedics, rescue workers, and volunteers.

Volunteer Firefighter Who Rushed To Help Hurricane Helene Victims Is Threatened With Arrest
A volunteer firefighter using his own helicopter to help save Hurricane Helene victims was threatened with an arrest while halfway through helping an elderly couple.
But while halfway through rescuing an elderly couple in Lake Lure, North Carolina , on Sunday, a senior official with the local fire department told him he would arrest him for doing so.
Seidhom brought his two-seater aircraft down in a parking lot after rescuing Susan Coffey from her her home, while leaving his own son Landon with her husband Michael at their isolated property.
The plan had been for Seidhom to return Susan to safety, before then returning for Landon and Michael in three separate trips, before the fire official threatened to have him arrested, he has claimed.
....Seidhom was then ordered to leave and not return, before he explained he had to fly back over a section of land to recover his son and Michael - with his chopper only able to accommodate one more person at a time.
He continued: 'He told me I wasn't going to go back up the mountain to get them, I was going to leave them there.'
When he pushed the man for a reason as to why he should not go back to collect them, he was told 'you're interfering with my operation'.
The man then told Seidhom: 'If you turn around and go back up the mountain, you're going to be arrested. I said, 'Well, sir, I'm going back to get my copilot [his son], I don't know what to tell you'.'

A volunteer firefighter using his own helicopter to help save Hurricane Helene victims was threatened with an arrest while halfway through helping an elderly couple.
But while halfway through rescuing an elderly couple in Lake Lure, North Carolina , on Sunday, a senior official with the local fire department told him he would arrest him for doing so.
Seidhom brought his two-seater aircraft down in a parking lot after rescuing Susan Coffey from her her home, while leaving his own son Landon with her husband Michael at their isolated property.
The plan had been for Seidhom to return Susan to safety, before then returning for Landon and Michael in three separate trips, before the fire official threatened to have him arrested, he has claimed.
....Seidhom was then ordered to leave and not return, before he explained he had to fly back over a section of land to recover his son and Michael - with his chopper only able to accommodate one more person at a time.
He continued: 'He told me I wasn't going to go back up the mountain to get them, I was going to leave them there.'
When he pushed the man for a reason as to why he should not go back to collect them, he was told 'you're interfering with my operation'.
The man then told Seidhom: 'If you turn around and go back up the mountain, you're going to be arrested. I said, 'Well, sir, I'm going back to get my copilot [his son], I don't know what to tell you'.'
Seidhom said the fire official then called over two other law enforcement officers who threatened him with arrest should he return to pick up the two.

The attack came during a string of over a dozen violent Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburb
Israel launched several violent attacks on Beirut’s southern suburb and elsewhere in the Lebanese capital early on 3 October and in the late hours of the previous day.
A massive Israeli airstrike hit the Beirut suburb at around 3:30 AM on Thursday, leaving a large cloud of smoke. Further heavy strikes targeted the area and were heard across the capital.
Seventeen Israeli airstrikes hit Hadath, the American neighborhood, Shiyah, Saint Therese, the Kafaat intersection, Haret Hreik, and Burj al-Barajneh. The Msharafiye area of the suburb was also struck.
Several residential buildings were destroyed in the attacks.
Shortly before, an Islamic Health Authority team was hit by a strike in the Bashoura area near Zokak al-Blat in inner Beirut. The Health Authority announced that the strike killed seven paramedics, rescue workers, and volunteers.
Israel used white phosphorus munitions in the attack on the Bashoura neighborhood, which are illegal to use on civilians and civilian infrastructure under international law. A foul, acidic smell was reported across Beirut.
Al Jadeed’s correspondent said the Bashoura attack targeted the office of Hezbollah MP Amine Sherri, who was not present in the building at the time of the attack.
The Israeli army issued evacuation orders to several areas in the suburb early Thursday. It said earlier in a statement that late on Wednesday night that it “is now targeting Beirut.”
The first several attacks, which hit the suburb late on 2 October, were reportedly carried out by Israeli warships.
