The union representing U.S. dockworkers has signaled that 45,000 members will walk off the job at midnight, kicking off a massive strike likely to shut down ports across the East and Gulf coasts.

The coming work stoppage threatens to significantly snarl the nation’s supply chain, potentially leading to higher prices and delays for households and businesses if it drags on for weeks. It could also stoke shipping cost increases that may be passed on to voters already frustrated with housing and food inflation, according to logistics experts.

Israel Confirms Its Ground Invasion Of Lebanon Has Begun

The US says it was informed of the Israeli plans ahead of the invasion

The Israeli military announced early Tuesday morning that its ground invasion of Lebanon has started, confirming earlier reports that Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were operating on the ground inside Lebanon.

The IDF said its troops are conducting “limited, localized, and targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon as Israeli airstrikes continue across the country. The ground raid comes after a week of heavy Israeli airstrikes that have killed over 1,000 people , including many civilians.

While the Biden administration has claimed it wants a ceasefire in Lebanon, it is supportive of the Israeli invasion and said it was informed of the plan. A US official told The Times of Israel that the administration has accepted Israel’s goal of removing Hezbollah positions from near its northern border but is concerned Israeli forces could get bogged down in Lebanon.

Some US officials are unhappy with President Biden’s backing for Israel’s escalations, with one telling HuffPost that the US was permitting “a nihilistic regional murder spree.”

A second US official speaking to HuffPost was asked about the claim that the ground invasion will be limited and said, “It will be big. Everyone who says it’s going to be ‘limited’ is a white man who thinks a million dead brown people is ‘limited.'”

Pakistan And BRICS: An Inevitable Development To US Inattention

Why should Islamabad continue to beg for favors from an inattentive and even hostile Washington, especially when there is another global pole that looks politically and economically more inviting?

Is Pakistan about to join the BRICS in earnest? Is it stepping off its US-centric trajectory and reassessing its foreign policy priorities in response to Washington’s increasing interest in cozying up to India – or is there a tactic in play to force the Americans to revert attention back to Islamabad?...

In truth, the change in the US's stance toward Pakistan has left the country out in the cold, to the point where even Afghanistan has started to bite the hand that fed it so long and afforded the Taliban to take the reins in Kabul, not once, but twice.

To counterbalance China's growing influence in the region, in recent years, the US has quickly sought out a closer strategic partnership with India, especially in defense and security matters. Islamabad has not weathered the American approach to India well, particularly considering India's efforts to strengthen its position in Afghanistan and its aspiration for dominance in South Asia and beyond.

Dr. Syed Hussain Shaheed Soherwordi, Chairman of the Department of International Relations at the University of Peshawar, tells The Cradle that Pakistan’s financial woes, internal strife, growing religious intolerance, and political instability leave the country in a bit of a pickle, making it tough to find solid ground for navigating its foreign policy in the current geopolitical landscape...

Soharwordi points out that when it comes to Pakistan's financial and economic problems, the US holds the cards in the global monetary institutions that are crucial lifelines for Islamabad:

Was Khan’s visit to Moscow a turning point?

Taking a cue from the incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan's surprise visit to Moscow in 2022, Pakistan has taken several steps since then that are inconsistent with the cash-strapped South Asian country's known foreign policy dimensions.

Khan did not take the initiative to travel to Russia at a critical juncture on his own. He would not have undertaken this visit, which infuriated the US and its allies and, in Khan's view, toppled his government, if the powerful army had not given the green light for this maiden diplomatic initiative.

Yet following Khan's initiative, Pakistan has taken several bold steps that suggest Islamabad is either gradually aligning itself with the Iran-China-Russia trio or seriously seeking to expand its geopolitical options... Several events that have unfolded in recent months indicate a potential new trend.

In June, Pakistan declared that it would join the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a 7,200-km-long multimodal transportation network connecting Central Asia, North Europe, India, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia - saying that Islamabad was doing so at Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation.

Heavy Clashes Light Up South Lebanon As Israel Claims Start Of 'Limited Ground Invasion'

No Israeli troops have entered Lebanese territory, despite claims to the contrary from Gulf and western media outlets

Intense cross-border clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli army have been ongoing in Lebanon's southern border from the early hours of 1 October after officials in Tel Aviv announced the launch of a “limited ground invasion” into Lebanese territory.

The clashes began soon after the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) withdrew from all border posts and positioned its forces in the area south of the Litani River. Heavy shelling, air strikes, and drone strikes by the Israeli army, including the use of internationally banned white phosphorous munitions, followed the LAF withdrawal.

Hours of intense clashes followed, with the Lebanese resistance reporting successful strikes on gatherings of Israeli soldiers amassed near the border.

According to Hezbollah's statements, a group of Israeli occupation soldiers was hit at the gate of the Shtula settlement with artillery shells. At midnight, the group also announced a successful operation against the occupation forces opposite the towns of Adaisseh and Kfar Kila, leaving behind several casualties.

Despite multiple claims by western and Gulf media outlets, who throughout the night reported Israeli troops and tanks had entered Lebanese territory, the correspondent for Al-Mayadeen TV – who is present at the border – confirmed that no soldiers crossed into the country as of Tuesday morning.

Iran Fires Missile Barrage At Israel

The US said it warned Israel of an imminent attack

Iran launched over 100 missiles at Israel on Tuesday in an attack that came in response to recent Israeli escalations.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that the attack was a response to the Israeli killing of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and Abbas Nilforoushan, an IRGC commander who was killed alongside the Hezbollah chief.

“In response to the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh, Hassan Nasrallah, and (IRGC commander) Nilforoshan, we targeted the heart of the occupied territories,” the IRGC said in a statement.

A statement from Iran’s mission to the UN suggests Tehran is done with its attack after launching two missile barrages, although it warned of a “crushing response” if Israel retaliates.

“Iran’s legal, rational, and legitimate response to the terrorist acts of the Zionist regime—which involved targeting Iranian nationals and interests and infringing upon the national sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran—has been duly carried out,” the mission wrote on X .

“Should the Zionist regime dare to respond or commit further acts of malevolence, a subsequent and crushing response will ensue. Regional states and the Zionists’ supporters are advised to part ways with the regime,” the mission added.

The Israeli military said there would be “consequences” for the attack. “We are on heightened alert on defense and offensive, we will protect the citizens of Israel. This [missile] fire will have consequences. We have plans, and we will act in the time and place that we choose,” said IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.

Hagari also said there were no more threats coming from Iran, suggesting the attack was over. He said some of the missiles were intercepted but that there were impacts in southern and central Israel, and the number of casualties is being assessed.

The White House said President Biden has directed the US military to intervene to defend Israel from Iran’s attacks and shoot down missiles that are targeting Israel.

The attack came after the White House said that it had information that Iran was preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel and vowed the US would come to Israel’s defense.

According to CNN, the White House said it had “indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel” and added that the US was “actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack.”

The Pentagon announced on Monday that it was sending a “few thousand” additional troops to the Middle East to prepare to come to Israel’s defense if needed. “A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran,” a White House official said Tuesday.
