Washington has maintained control over Iraq’s oil revenues since its illegal 2003 invasion – a financial and economic subjugation that undermines Iraqi sovereignty and denies it access to its own national treasure.
In July, the Iraqi Central Bank halted all foreign transactions in Chinese Yuan, succumbing to intense pressure from the US Federal Reserve to do so. The shutdown followed a brief period during which Baghdad had allowed merchants to trade in Yuan, an initiative intended to mitigate excessive US restrictions on Iraq’s access to US dollars.
While this Yuan-based trade excluded Iraq’s oil exports, which remained in US dollars, Washington viewed it as a threat to its financial dominance over the Persian Gulf state. But how has the US managed to exert such total control over Iraqi financial policies?
The answer lies in 2003, with mechanisms established following the illegal US-led invasion of Iraq.
A legacy of ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’
Since the signing of Executive Order 13303 (EO13303) by President George W Bush on 22 May 2003, all revenues from Iraq’s oil sales have been funneled directly into an account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The troops could be used to evacuate diplomats from Lebanon, and the Pentagon says the US is positioned to defend Israel
The US has deployed dozens of troops to Cyprus amid Israel’s dramatic escalation of its bombing campaign in Lebanon, CNN reported on Wednesday .
US officials said the troops are preparing for a range of contingencies, including the possibility of helping evacuate US citizens from Lebanon. The UK has announced that it’s sending 700 troops to Cyprus to evacuate British nationals.
Earlier this week, the Pentagon announced that the US was deploying more troops to the region but didn’t specify how many. On Wednesday, the Pentagon insisted it wasn’t directly supporting Israel’s attack on Lebanon but said it would defend Israel if necessary.
“The support that you’re seeing when it comes to US forces in the region is for our own force protection and should we need to come to the defense of Israel, like we saw from that large-scale attack from Iran,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh.
Singh was referencing when the US directly intervened to defend Israel from Iranian missiles and drones in April, an attack provoked by the Israeli bombing of Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria.

2011 Flashback: Haaretz / Israeli Media — Study: 61% of Men Don't See Forced Sex With Acquaintance as Rape
"Over half of Israeli men - 61 percent - do not consider forcing sex on an acquaintance as rape, a study conducted by Tel-Hai Academic College recently found. Moreover, 41 percent of Israeli women share that view."
The study was conducted last fall by Dr. Avigail Moor, a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating victims of sexual violence.
Moor asked her respondents two main questions: The first was whether they believed forced sex with an acquaintance constitutes rape; the second was whether they felt forced sex with a stranger constitutes rape. Respondents were asked to provide a simple yes or no answer.
What Moor discovered is that many of those surveyed viewed these two circumstances quite differently. While 61 percent of men and 41 percent of women said they did not consider forced sex with an acquaintance to be rape, nine out of 10 respondents of both genders said that forced sex with a stranger is rape.
When asked whether they viewed forced sex with a spouse as rape, only 8.5 percent of women and 7.3 percent of men said yes.

On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump pushed a narrative being spread by US intelligence officials that Iran is trying to kill him even though there’s no evidence of Iranian involvement in either attempt on his life.
Trump’s campaign said they were briefed on the alleged Iranian threat by officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which is led by Avril Haines.
“Big threats on my life by Iran. The entire US Military is watching and waiting. Moves were already made by Iran that didn’t work out, but they will try again,” Trump wrote on X after the briefing. “Not a good situation for anyone. I am surrounded by more men, guns, and weapons than I have ever seen before.”
The Times report also said there was no evidence that Iran was connected in any way to Ryan Routh, who was arrested on September 15 and recently charged with attempting to assassinate Trump. Routh is a staunch supporter of the Ukraine proxy war and traveled to the country to help recruit fighters for the Ukrainian foreign legion.
Despite the lack of evidence, Trump suggested at a campaign event on Wednesday that Iran might have been involved in the two assassination attempts. “As you know, there have been two assassination attempts on my life that we know of, and they may or may not involve – but possibly do – Iran,” he said at an event in North Carolina.

As campaigns try to sway voters before the November election, they'll face few, if any, legal consequences for stretching the truth or telling outright lies, experts tell Axios.
Why it matters: Voters are about to get inundated with political TV ads, mailers and texts, many of them making dubious claims. But a long history of court rulings protects politicians' ability to lie in most cases.
What they're saying: The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the First Amendment must protect speech that is false or misleading "to avoid chilling legitimate political discourse," Victor Menaldo, a University of Washington political science professor, tells Axios.
Because political speech is "foundational" under the First Amendment, "lies are not only protected, but even more so for politicians," he writes in an email.
Flashback: Several attempts to legislate against lying by politicians have been struck down by the courts.
In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Stolen Valor Act of 2005, a federal law that criminalized lying about receiving military honors.
The high court ruled that a California water board member couldn't be prosecuted for falsely claiming he had served in the Marines and received the Medal of Honor.
Other courts have struck down efforts to regulate false political speech in Ohio, Minnesota, Washington and Massachusetts...

The backbench MP, considered on the left of the party, made these remarks at a Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) fringe event on Monday evening at the ruling Labour Party’s annual conference in Liverpool.
Ribeiro-Addy also warned that the conflict in the Middle East is widening to southern Lebanon.
“The danger is a regional war,” she said.
The event had already drawn controversy after it was revealed that party managers had prohibited the use of the words “genocide” and “apartheid” in promotional brochures referring to Israel’s campaign against Palestinians.

Andrius Kubilius, a former Lithuanian prime minister and the EU’s first defense commissioner, has said Europe must be ready to fight Russia within 6-8 years.
“Defense ministers and NATO generals agree that Vladimir Putin could be ready for confrontation with NATO and the EU in 6-8 years,” Kubilius told Reuters .
“If we take these assessments seriously, then that is the time for us to properly prepare, and it is a short one. This means we have to take quick decisions, and ambitious decisions,” he added.
NATO has been preparing for a future war with Russia despite the risk of the conflict quickly turning nuclear. The EU has little impact on military policy since individual EU members are responsible for their own defense, but the appointment of Kubilius shows the bloc is looking to increase its involvement in war planning.
“The European Union won’t have defense plans or military leadership, like NATO does — but the European Union has instruments to get larger financing, which NATO doesn’t,” Kubilius said.

Andrius Kubilius, a former Lithuanian prime minister and the EU’s first defense commissioner, has said Europe must be ready to fight Russia within 6-8 years.
“Defense ministers and NATO generals agree that Vladimir Putin could be ready for confrontation with NATO and the EU in 6-8 years,” Kubilius told Reuters .
“If we take these assessments seriously, then that is the time for us to properly prepare, and it is a short one. This means we have to take quick decisions, and ambitious decisions,” he added.
NATO has been preparing for a future war with Russia despite the risk of the conflict quickly turning nuclear. The EU has little impact on military policy since individual EU members are responsible for their own defense, but the appointment of Kubilius shows the bloc is looking to increase its involvement in war planning.
“The European Union won’t have defense plans or military leadership, like NATO does — but the European Union has instruments to get larger financing, which NATO doesn’t,” Kubilius said.
