UN Overwhelmingly Votes To Sanction Israel, Impose Arms Embargo

The vote passed with 124 in favor and 43 abstentions. Washington and Tel Aviv voted against the resolution, along with 14 others.

...The Palestinian-drafted resolution called on Israel to end “its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” within 12 months, including the presence of illegal settlements and hundreds of thousands of illegal settlers.

The resolution urged states to “take steps towards ceasing the importation of any products originating in the Israeli settlements, as well as the provision or transfer of arms, munitions and related equipment to Israel ... where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that they may be used in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

The issue of Palestine is “the permanent responsibility” of the UN until it is solved in accordance with international law, the resolution states.

It also cites an advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in July regarding the illegality of Israel’s West Bank occupation...

This was the first resolution officially advanced by Palestine since it took its seat among UN member states for the first time this month after being granted additional privileges following a General Assembly vote in May.

It was co-sponsored by 50 states at the General Assembly, including Turkiye.

Prior to the vote, Washington attempted to lobby states against voting in favor of it. ....

The Israeli Knesset passed a vote on 18 July, completely rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, including statehood as part of any future peace agreement.

US Navy Chief Unveils Plan To Be Ready For War With China By 2027

The US is preparing for a direct fight with China despite the risk of it turning into a nuclear war

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the highest ranking officer in the US Navy, unveiled a plan on Wednesday to be ready for a war with China by 2027 as the US military is preparing for a direct fight with Beijing despite the risk of nuclear war.

The plan lays out goals to be reached by 2027, including making 80% of the naval force ready for combat deployments on short notice. Franchetti told The Associated Press she wants to increase combat readiness so “if the nation calls us, we can push the ‘go’ button, and we can surge our forces to be able to meet the call.”

Other goals include increasing recruitment, improving Navy infrastructure, removing delays in ship maintenance, and increasing the use of drones and other autonomous systems.

Franchetti said the US is taking lessons from Ukraine’s operations against Russia in the Black Sea and the US’s new war against the Houthis in Yemen. US Navy ships have battled the Houthis since January in what US commanders have called the largest US naval battle since World War II, but the campaign has failed to deter or stop Houthi attacks.

Franchetti said that she is focusing on getting ready for war with China by 2027 because that is “the year that that President Xi (Jinping) told his forces to be ready to invade Taiwan.” However, that idea is only based on claims from US intelligence officials.

While China has ambitious goals for its military, there’s no evidence of a direct order to be ready for an invasion of Taiwan by 2027. Earlier this year, Defense News reported that Xi raised the issue with President Biden when the two leaders met in San Francisco in November 2023.

Recounting the meeting, a US official said: “Xi basically said: ‘Look, I hear all these reports in the United States [of] how we’re planning for military action in 2027 or 2035. There are no such plans. No one has talked to me about this.' ”

The Defense News report noted how the claims about a Chinese invasion of Taiwan have helped funnel money to a US military buildup in the Asia Pacific. The claim about a 2027 invasion was first made in 2021 by Retired Adm. Phil Davidson, the former head of US Indo-Pacific Command.

“The concern it generated earned a nickname: the ‘Davidson window,’ shorthand for the near-term threat of an attack on Taiwan,” Defense News reported. “And that changed how Congress spent money...."

Israel Bombed A Residential Block In Gaza. Then Drones Shot At Anyone Trying To Rescue The Survivors

On September 17, the Israeli army bombed a block near the al-Bureij refugee camp, completely destroying seven homes and trapping dozens under the rubble. When rescuers arrived at the scene to help, Israeli drones started firing at them as well.

‘They are killing our families and preventing us from rescuing them’

The Israeli army bombed an entire residential block east of al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip at dawn on September 17. Over seven buildings housing Palestinian families were completely destroyed, caving in on top of the heads of their inhabitants. According to witnesses, the Israeli army prevented ambulance and Civil Defense crews from reaching the site to rescue those who may have survived, using quadcopter drones to shoot at anyone who arrived.

Civil Defense teams had first arrived at the site at around 5:30 a.m. and began rescue efforts, despite the difficulty of working in the dark without proper equipment.

The spokesperson for the Civil Defense in Gaza, Mahmoud Basal, told Mondoweiss that when Civil Defense teams first arrived at the site, they found that all the bombed houses had been inhabited by three families. The Tartawi family, the Abu Shawqa family, and the Batran family accounted for over 50 people in the buildings.

“Our teams arrived on site and saw the bodies of the martyrs under the rubble and the ceilings that had fallen on top of them,” Basal told Mondoweiss .

Not long after first responders started pulling victims out from under the rubble, the Israeli army’s drones arrived and shot upon rescuers, journalists, and bystanders.

New BRICS Payment System To Include Trading, Investing & Settlements

BRICS is working towards the creation of a new payment system without the integration of the US dollar in its mechanism, confirmed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The minister added that the new payment system will not only be used to settle cross-border transactions, it will act as a complete financial set-up.

The development, when launched, could attract emerging economies towards it making a shift away from the US dollar. The Russian minister revealed that the new BRICS payment system will be equipped with trading, investing, and along with trade settlements. He explained that the mechanism will allow countries to partake in financial operations without being dependent on the US dollar. Lavrov also hit out at the US and Europe for pressing sanctions on countries they don’t like. He stressed that the sanctions are what led to BRICS decision on launching a new payment system. Even US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen acknowledged that the White House sanctioning developing nations led to de-dollarization.

“Many are attracted by the fact that payment systems are being developed within BRICS. Which allows trading, investing, carrying out other economic operations without being dependent on those that decided to weaponize the dollar and the euro,” the foreign minister said.

Israeli Torture Chambers Aren’t New. They Provoked October 7

For many years I lived just up the road from Megiddo prison in northern Israel, where new film of Israeli guards torturing Palestinians en masse has been published by Israel’s Haaretz newspaper. I drove past Megiddo prison on hundreds of occasions. Over time I came to barely notice the squat grey buildings, surrounded by watch towers and razor wire.

There are several large prisons like Megiddo in Israel’s north. It is where Palestinians end up after they have been seized from their homes, often in the middle of the night. Israel, and the western media, say these Palestinians have been “arrested”, as though Israel is enforcing some kind of legitimate legal procedure over oppressed subjects – or rather objects – of its occupation. In truth, these Palestinians have been kidnapped.

The prisons are invariably located close to major roads in Israel, presumably because Israelis find it reassuring to know Palestinians are being locked up in such large numbers. (As an aside, I should mention that transferring prisoners out of occupied territory into the occupier’s territory is a war crime. But let that pass.)

Even before the mass round-ups of the past 11 months, the Palestinian Authority estimated that 800,000 Palestinians – or 40 per cent of the male population – had spent time in an Israeli prison. Many had never been charged with any crime and had never received a trial. Not that that would make any difference – the conviction rate of Palestinians in Israel’s military courts is near 100 per cent. There is no such thing as an innocent Palestinian, it seems.

Rather, imprisonment is a kind of terrifying rite of passage that has been endured by generations of Palestinians, one required of them by the bureaucracy managing Israel’s apartheid-occupation system.

Torture, even of children, has been routine in these prisons since the occupation began nearly 60 years ago, as Israeli human rights groups have been regularly documenting.

The imprisonment and torture of Palestinians serve several goals for Israel. It crushes the spirit of Palestinians individually and collectively. It traumatizes generation after generation, creating fear and suspicion. And it helps to recruit a large class of Palestinian informants and collaborators who secretly work with Israel’s secret police, the Shin Bet, to foil Palestinian resistance operations against Israel’s illegal occupation forces.

Social Media And Online Video Firms Are Conducting ‘Vast Surveillance’ On Users, FTC Finds

Agency accuses Meta, Google, TikTok and other companies of sharing troves of user information with third-parties

Social media and online video companies are collecting huge troves of your personal information on and off their websites or apps and sharing it with a wide range of third-party entities, a new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) staff report on nine tech companies confirms.

The FTC report published on Thursday looked at the data-gathering practices of Facebook, WhatsApp , YouTube, Discord, Reddit, Amazon, Snap, TikTok and Twitter/X between January 2019 and 31 December 2020. The majority of the companies’ business models incentivized tracking how people engaged with their platforms, collecting their personal data and using it to determine what content and ads users see on their feeds, the report states.

The FTC’s findings validate years of reporting on the depth and breadth of these companies’ tracking practices and call out the tech firms for “vast surveillance of users”. The agency is recommending Congress pass federal privacy regulations based on what it has documented. In particular, the agency is urging lawmakers to recognize that the business models of many of these companies do little to incentivize effective self-regulation or protection of user data.

“Recognizing this basic fact is important for enforcers and policymakers alike because any efforts to limit or regulate how these firms harvest troves of people’s personal data will conflict with their primary business incentives,” FTC chair Lina Khan said in a statement. “To craft effective rules or remedies limiting this data collection, policymakers will need to ensure that violating the law is not more lucrative than abiding by it.”

The FTC is also asking that the companies mentioned in the report invest in “limiting data retention and sharing, restricting targeted advertising, and strengthening protections for teens”.

Notably, the report highlights how consumers have little control over how these companies use and share their personal details. Most companies collected or inferred demographic informatio... Some collected information about household income, education and parental and marital status. But even when this type of personal information was not explicitly collected, some companies could analyze user behavior on the platform to deduce the details of their personal lives without their knowledge.. This information was then used by some companies to tailor what content people saw to increase engagement on their platforms. In some cases, that demographic information was shared with third-party entities...

Whatever product was in use, it was not easy to opt out of data collection, according to the FTC. Nearly all the companies said they fed personal information to automated systems, most often to serve content and advertisements....

Several firms say it’s impossible to even compile a full list of who they share your data with. When the companies were asked to enumerate which advertisers, data brokers or other entities they shared consumer data with, none of these nine firms provided the FTC with a full inventory.

US Officials Say There Will Be No Gaza Ceasefire Deal Before Biden’s Term Ends

Senior US officials have concluded that a Gaza ceasefire deal will likely not be reached before President Biden’s term comes to an end on January 20, 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

For months, Biden administration officials have claimed that a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas was in sight while at the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was constantly rejecting the idea of a permanent ceasefire.

The US officials speaking to the Journal blamed the lack of a deal on Hamas, claiming the main sticking point is over the ratio of Palestinian prisoners to Israeli hostages that will be released. But it has been widely acknowledged by Israeli officials and media outlets that Netanyahu has been sabotaging the chances of an agreement.

ABC News, Citing A US Intelligence Source: Pager Attack 15+ Years in Making

The Cradle: Lebanon Terror Attacks 'Long In The Making' Israeli Op: Report

Israeli intelligence agents were behind several shell companies created to manufacture explosive-laden devices shipped to Lebanon

The dual terror attacks that rocked Lebanon this week, killing dozens and injuring thousands, were the result of a “complex and long in the making” Israeli operation, according to 12 current and former defense and intelligence officials who spoke with the New York Times (NYT).

“Even before [Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan] Nasrallah decided to expand pager usage, Israel had put into motion a plan to establish a shell company that would pose as an international pager producer,” the NYT report states, referring to Hungary-based BAC Consulting.

The shell company served as a front to manufacture thousands of pagers on behalf of Taiwanese company Gold Apollo that were acquired by the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah earlier this year. “At least two other shell companies were created to mask the real identities of the people creating the pagers: Israeli intelligence officers,” the report states.

“BAC did take on ordinary clients, for which it produced a range of ordinary pagers. But the only client that really mattered was Hezbollah, and its pagers were far from ordinary. Produced separately, they contained batteries laced with the explosive PETN,” three intelligence officers who spoke with the NYT are quoted as saying.

On Thursday, Budapest announced that the explosive-laden pagers were “never” in the country.

Now it appears that the Israelis set up front companies across Europe to manufacture the pagers themselves, embedding small amounts of PETN explosive inside, ready to be detonated by a coded message.

Haaretz: New Evidence Reveals Netanyahu's Relentless Efforts To Block Hostage Deal, Report Shows

'Torpedo the Deal': Israel's Channel 12 News exclusive report features new documents and previously unheard conversations showing Netanyahu's efforts to sabotage any hostage deal

Wednesday night, Channel 12 News' Yaron Avraham, presented a comprehensive report detailing all of the hostage negotiation deals that have been proposed since November, when the last, and only, successful exchange took place.

Presented as a detailed timeline of the last 11 months, the investigation includes never-before-seen documents and previously unheard conversations which highlight Netanyahu's relentless attempts to "Torpedo the Deal," as the segment is titled.

.... Around the same time, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Betzalel Smotritch began speaking out publicly against another cease-fire deal.

Over the next nine months, Avraham reported, Israel's negotiation team was sent on what is ultimately a futile mission to secure another deal that would bring home more hostages. Along the way, the investigation demonstrates, Netanyahu did everything in his power to make sure they are not successful. He repeatedly prevented them from traveling to cease-fire talks, or greatly limited their negotiation powers when they are allowed to go.

He walked back several promises he made, including an agreement to end the war, and invents new "non-starters" that were previously never mentioned. He changed his mind, he denied, and he shifted blame to anyone he possibly can. And throughout all of this, he has ministers like Smotrich and Ben-Gvir threatened to leave his government, if a deal moved forward.

This is where Channel 12's investigation concluded – with images of the list of hostages meant to be returned, should another deal ever come to fruition. On the list are Kfir and Ariel Bibas, the red-headed children whose whereabouts remain unknown, the five female spotters seen in the kidnapping video, as well as the names of dozens of other hostages whose friends and families are hoping that Netanyahu and his coalition will put aside their political agendas and free their loved ones from captivity.
