Recruiting African Asylum Seekers For Gaza War Is New Despicable Low For Israel | Haaretz Editorial

No Israeli of conscience could fail to be shocked by the fact that the defense establishment is using asylum seekers from Africa to perform various tasks in the Gaza Strip in exchange for assistance in obtaining permanent residency in Israel.

What this means is clear: Israel is creating its own version of Russia's Wagner Group. In Russia, Wagner was a mercenary army comprised of thousands of prisoners who, in exchange for very dangerous military service, received a pardon and were freed from jail. In Israel, this criminal extortion is aimed at the weakest segment of society, asylum seekers from Africa: Carry out life-threatening tasks for an army that isn't yours, in a war that isn't yours, and you'll be given permanent residency.

This report comes on top of the fact that the Israel Defense Forces is using Palestinian civilians who are snatched up randomly to search tunnels in Gaza. These miserable Palestinians are sent into the tunnels with their hands tied, cameras strapped to their bodies, to "clear" tunnels in place of dogs from the Oketz Unit, many of which have been killed during the war.

At least one Palestinian has been killed doing this; it is virtually a suicide mission. "Our lives are more important than their lives," one IDF officer said. The report also said that the high command is aware of this practice.

The war in Gaza has become a lever that drags the state into heretofore unknown abysses of warped behavior. The fact that the IDF brass and other defense agencies are behind these actions, which are among the very worst of war crimes, makes this particularly egregious.

Israel Says ‘High Probability’ Its Strike Killed Three Hostages in Gaza

On Sunday, the Israeli military said there was a “high probability” that three hostages found dead months ago were killed in an Israeli airstrike.

The army announced the conclusions of its investigation into the deaths of Cpl. Nik Beizer, Sgt. Ron Sherman and Elia Toledano. It said investigations had determined that the three were likely killed in a November airstrike that also killed a senior Hamas militant, Ahmed Ghandour.

All three of the hostages were kidnapped in Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. Their bodies were recovered in December, but the cause of death was only recently determined.

In its report, the army said there was a “high probability” they were killed in the strike, based on where the bodies were recovered, pathological reports and other intelligence. But it said, “it is not possible to definitely determine the circumstances of their deaths.”

The conclusions could add pressure on the government to strike a deal to bring home the remaining hostages held by Hamas. Critics say it’s too difficult and dangerous to try to rescue them. Late last month, Israel recovered the bodies of six hostages that it says were killed by Hamas captors shortly before Israeli forces arrived.

Their families were initially informed that the three men had been killed in Hamas captivity, but Maayan, the mother of Sherman, soon declared otherwise

Given the Hannibal Directive exists, it isn’t hard to imagine the spirit of it - that Israeli hostages are a strategic liability, and are better dead than alive - still lives on, and applies even after the October 7th attack.

If the Hannibal Directive applied on the day, it probably applied after. WHY would the Israeli army prefer hostages to die rather than make it across the border into Gaza as a hostage? Because hostages gives the Gazans' leverage politically....

Because Hostages... forces Israeli leadership to make potential concessions due to the political pressure to save lives the Israeli leaders do not care about…(they’re just expendable "pawns" in a "chess game" in the eyes of Israeli leadership after all…[they)
