US Looking To Give Military Aid To Gabon To Keep China Out

The US is working on a military and economic aid package for Gabon as part of a deal to keep the Chinese military out of the African nation, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

Sources told Bloomberg that the agreement would include training Gabon’s special forces and $5 million in funding for the country’s democratic transition. The report didn’t say how much the US is willing to spend on the military assistance.

The new US aid package for Gabon hasn’t been finalized and is expected to be unveiled when Brice Oligui Nguema, a military officer acting as Gabon’s “transitional president,” will visit Washington either at the end of September or early October.

US military officials have been warning for years that China is seeking to establish a military base on Africa’s Atlantic coast. China has a naval base in Djibouti on the east coast of Africa, which marked its first foreign military base.

The US has about 750 military bases worldwide, including many near China, but sources told Bloomberg that a Chinese base on the Atlantic Ocean is a red line for the US even if it’s as far away from the continental United States as Gabon, which lies on the equator.

US officials claim that China has been attempting to establish a military training facility in Gabon, which they fear could lead to a permanent base. China has other ways of spreading its influence on the African continent, mainly by helping fund infrastructure projects, and the US has also been attempting to push back against those efforts.

Putin: Supporting Long-Range Strikes On Russian Territory Would Put NATO ‘At War With Russia’

POLITICO reports the US is preparing to expand where Ukraine can hit inside Russia with US and British missiles

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday strongly warned the US against allowing Ukraine to use NATO missiles in long-range strikes inside Russian territory, saying the move would put the Western military alliance “at war with Russia.”

Putin’s comments came after POLITICO reported that the White House was finalizing plans to expand the areas inside Russia where Ukraine can use US and British-provided missiles.

“This would in a significant way change the very nature of the conflict,” Putin told a TV reporter, according to AFP . “It would mean that NATO countries, the US, European countries, are at war with Russia. If that’s the case, then taking into account the change of nature of the conflict, we will take the appropriate decisions based on the threats that we will face.”

He added that supporting long-range Ukrainian strikes inside Russian territory is “a decision on whether NATO countries are directly involved in the military conflict or not.”

A day earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv and discussed the issue of long-range strikes. At a press conference in Kyiv, Blinken said they would take the conversation back to their “bosses” and strongly hinted the US was preparing to take the escalatory step.

Israeli Army Finds Nine Tunnels From Gaza to Egypt, All Sealed on Egyptian Side Prior to War

The IDF says it located nine tunnels that cross the Philadelphi corridor from Gaza to Egypt, all of which were sealed on the Egyptian side before the war began.

Netanyahu has insisted that the IDF must stay at Philadelphi to prevent arms smuggling

The IDF's understanding is that most of the activity in these tunnels took place during the Morsi presidency between 2012-2013, and that under Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, the tunnels were sealed

The IDF says that there is a low chance that these tunnels will be used for smuggling, and believes that most of the weapons in Gaza were produced inside the Strip, using materials smuggled through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings

What Price Are Americans Prepared To Pay For Defending Taiwan?

Taiwan is profoundly important to China, but less so to the U.S.

American policymakers appear set on war. The only question is against whom. Alas, they apparently believe the more, the merrier.

Washington continues to aid Ukraine, which is increasingly striking within Russia and recently grabbed Russian territory around Kursk, site of a historic World War II battle. Moscow just launched a flurry of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine. Israel and Hezbollah recently traded blows, and Iran continues to threaten retaliatory attacks on Israel, with American units on station to defend the latter. The U.S. Navy is battling Yemen’s Ansar Allah (the Houthis). In Asia the Pentagon garrisons South Korea, patrols the Asia-Pacific, and threatens China over Taiwan.

This all comes naturally to Americans who grew up in a world in which the United States deployed the world’s most powerful military. Washington’s influence was constrained during the Cold War, but its relative power grew dramatically in the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse. National ego took over. “What we say goes,” declared President George H.W. Bush. His successors have acted accordingly, determined to run the world, as President Joe Biden put it. Yet who outside of Washington would commend Uncle Sam for the job that he has done?

The problem is not just ostentatious failure. It is possible disaster. The Russo–Ukrainian war is dangerous enough. Allied policymakers and commentators appear to have concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin is little more than a paper tiger, unwilling to escalate despite Ukrainian strikes on and incursions in Russian territory. Nevertheless, Moscow still appears to be winning, advancing in the Donbas and biding its time before dealing with seemingly isolated Ukrainian troops around Kursk. If Putin comes to believe Russia is losing, he might choose to escalate and risk bringing the U.S. and NATO into the war.

The danger of conflict with the PRC over Taiwan is even greater. Consider war with a great power that is greatly increasing its military outlays while already possessing significant conventional capabilities, the world’s second-best navy, a formidable missile force, and an expanding nuclear arsenal. Imagine fighting thousands of miles away over territory less than 100 miles off China’s coast.
