Turkey Seeks BRICS Membership to Build Alliances Beyond West

Turkey has formally asked to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations as it seeks to bolster its global influence and forge new ties beyond its traditional Western allies, according to people familiar with the matter.

According to Bloomberg sources, the view of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration is that the geopolitical center of gravity is shifting away from developed economies. Turkey's new diplomatic push reflects its aspirations to cultivate ties with all sides in a multipolar world, while still fulfilling its obligations as a key member of NATO.

“Turkey can become a strong, prosperous, prestigious and effective country if it improves its relations with the East and the West simultaneously,” Erdogan said in Istanbul over the weekend. “Any method other than this will not benefit Turkey, but will harm it.”

The BRICS grouping, named after Brazil, Russia, India and China and South Africa, includes some of the biggest emerging economies. It got four new members at the start of this year when Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia and Egypt joined its ranks. Saudi Arabia was invited to join, though the kingdom is yet to do that.

Annexation, Mass Expulsion, Jewish Settlements Make Up 'Second Stage' Of Gaza War: Report

Israeli media says Palestinians expelled from northern Gaza in the second phase will 'huddle together' with refugees from the first phase in the 'humanitarian enclave' in the south

Israel is entering the second phase of its war on Gaza, which involves expelling Palestinians, establishing Jewish settlements, and the annexation in the north of the strip while keeping Palestinians living in tents under military occupation in the south “for years,” according to an analysis by Haaretz editor-in-chief Aluf Benn published on 9 September.

Benn writes that the Israeli military will “strive to complete its takeover of the northern Gaza Strip from the previous border to the Netzarim corridor. We can predict that this area will then gradually be made available for Jewish settlement and annexation to Israel.”

“If that happens, Palestinian residents who remain in northern Gaza will be expelled, as suggested by Maj. Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, under threat of starvation and under cover of 'protecting their lives' while the Israeli military hunts down Hamas militants in that sector,” he adds.

The Haaretz editor-in-chief says that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dreams of being the first Israeli leader in 50 years to expand Israeli territory through conquest rather than relinquish it.

If Netanyahu can conquer and resettle Gaza, his supporters will view this as a “lifetime achievement.”

Turkiye’s BRICS Bid: Strategic Shift Or Diplomatic Leverage?

Ankara’s bid to join BRICS signals a potential shift toward multipolarity in its foreign policy priorities. Will Turkiye’s membership be thwarted by its NATO allies, or is this merely a political play to nudge the west into opening its pursestrings?

NATO member Turkiye’s formal application to join the BRICS group of emerging economies earlier this month has garnered widespread attention. While the Turkish Foreign Ministry and the Directorate of Communications have yet to officially confirm or deny the news, there have been several indirect confirmations from Turkish and Russian officials.

Omer Celik, a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), couched his response to reporters carefully:

Our president has stated at various times that we want to be a member [of BRICS] ... Our request on this issue is clear. This process is underway in this framework, but there is no concrete development on this.

Further confirmation of Turkiye’s membership bid came from Yuri Ushakov, BRICS chair and Russian President Putin’s foreign policy advisor, who has publicly stated:

"Turkiye has applied for full membership. We will consider this application."

In addition, Sputnik reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan, scheduled for 22–24 September. This aligns with prior announcements that Erdogan would also attend the next Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting for heads of state.

These developments emphasize Ankara’s interest in the multipolar order that BRICS represents, especially following its failed bids to join the EU, though Turkiye’s official stance remains unclear – perhaps deliberately so.

The timing of Turkiye’s potential BRICS membership raises important questions, especially given that this development follows an informal meeting with EU foreign ministers, marking Turkiye’s first such invitation since 2019.

Palestinians Take Unprecedented Seat At UN General Assembly - 'A Historic Moment For Us'

The Palestinian delegation joined member states' tables for the first time, a move Israel's UN deputy ambassador branded as 'a reward for terrorism'

Palestinians took a seat among member states for the first time at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, exercising a new right accorded to the delegation despite not being a full member of the organization. A new delegation was present as the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations commenced in New York.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian envoy to the UN, took his place at a table between Sri Lanka and Sudan labeled "State of Palestine." Mansour's seat stemmed from the "rights and privileges" extended to Palestine through the passage of an Arab and Palestinian-sponsored resolution in May, with 143 votes in favor, 19 against and 25 abstentions. The U.S. voted against it, alongside Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea.

Previously, Palestine held "non-member observer state" status, which it received in 2012. May's General Assembly resolution did not give the Palestinians full UN membership but recognized them as eligible to join. As per the resolution, Palestinians can now introduce proposals and amendments and sit among the member states but remain unable to cast a vote or join the Security Council.

Upon the resolution's adoption, Foreign Minister Israel Katz called the decision a "prize for Hamas," In a statement after the vote, Katz said: "The absurd decision taken today at the UN General Assembly highlights the structural bias of the UN and the reasons why, under the leadership of UN Secretary-General [Antonio] Guterres, it has turned itself into an irrelevant institution."

Israel once again denounced the decision on Tuesday.
