Harris’s Call For Price Controls On Groceries Is More Pandering Than Policy
In a speech last week, Vice President Kamala Harris called for a federal ban on “price gouging” on groceries. From a strictly economic standpoint, there are so many things wrong with this proposal that I don’t know where to begin.
But the worst of it isn’t in the policy analysis — it’s in what this pandering says about the chances of a serious discussion of difficult issues with the American voter.
Let’s start with the policy analysis. Even without referring to the current situation, there are three well-known problems with a ban on price gouging. First, grocery stores typically have extremely low profit-margins, on the order of 2 percent or less , reflecting their limited pricing power in a competitive industry. So this is not the right sector — if there ever is one — to target with price-controls.
Second, it is very difficult to define price gouging . How do you distinguish it from a rise in prices owing to shortfalls in supply or surges in demand?

Netanyahu Asks Court To Block Airing Of His Interrogation In Upcoming Film
A Jerusalem court rejected the petition shortly after it was filed, and hours before 'The Bibi Files' is scheduled to debut at the Toronto Film Festival
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked a Jerusalem court on Monday to block the airing of footage of the PM being investigated as part of an upcoming documentary, but a judge rejected the petition a few hours later.
In his lawyer's petition to the Jerusalem District Court, Netanyahu's lawyers cited the Israeli law, which prohibits the broadcast of investigation material without the court's permission.
The petition also claims that one of the movie's producers, Israeli journalist Raviv Drucker, has "publically declared himself as a political opponent of Netanyahu, who wishes the end of his tenure," adding that Drucker's goal is to influence the legal proceedings and infringe on the PM's rights.
The film, which is expected to debut on Monday evening in the Toronto Film Festival, is called "The Bibi Files." It's produced by Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney and directed by Alexis Bloom, and will screen as a work in progress. The filmmakers told Hollywood trade paper Variety they are bringing the film to the festival due to the ongoing war in Gaza and concerns over democracy in Israel.
The recordings of Netanyahu were reportedly made between 2016 and 2018 as part of the police investigation into the prime minister that eventually saw him being charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust. The recordings were leaked to Gibney last year, Variety said.
The paper noted that the footage includes "extensive interviews with Bibi, his wife Sara, his son Yair, the prime minister's friends and associates, as well as household employees."
Israeli journalists have published transcripts of police interrogations of Netanyahu over the years. Many of them appear in reporting by Haaretz investigative reporter Gidi Weitz, who went over hundreds of thousands of words from years of interrogation sessions in which Netanyahu was asked about everything from his meddling in the media to bottles of champagne.
No footage of the police interrogation has ever been aired in Israel due to privacy laws, and it is unclear if the film will be shown in the country – certainly while Netanyahu's corruption trial continues at Jerusalem District Court.

Turkey Seeks BRICS Membership to Build Alliances Beyond West
Turkey has formally asked to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations as it seeks to bolster its global influence and forge new ties beyond its traditional Western allies, according to people familiar with the matter.
According to Bloomberg sources, the view of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration is that the geopolitical center of gravity is shifting away from developed economies. Turkey's new diplomatic push reflects its aspirations to cultivate ties with all sides in a multipolar world, while still fulfilling its obligations as a key member of NATO.
“Turkey can become a strong, prosperous, prestigious and effective country if it improves its relations with the East and the West simultaneously,” Erdogan said in Istanbul over the weekend. “Any method other than this will not benefit Turkey, but will harm it.”
The BRICS grouping, named after Brazil, Russia, India and China and South Africa, includes some of the biggest emerging economies. It got four new members at the start of this year when Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia and Egypt joined its ranks. Saudi Arabia was invited to join, though the kingdom is yet to do that.

Israeli media says Palestinians expelled from northern Gaza in the second phase will 'huddle together' with refugees from the first phase in the 'humanitarian enclave' in the south
Israel is entering the second phase of its war on Gaza, which involves expelling Palestinians, establishing Jewish settlements, and the annexation in the north of the strip while keeping Palestinians living in tents under military occupation in the south “for years,” according to an analysis by Haaretz editor-in-chief Aluf Benn published on 9 September.
Benn writes that the Israeli military will “strive to complete its takeover of the northern Gaza Strip from the previous border to the Netzarim corridor. We can predict that this area will then gradually be made available for Jewish settlement and annexation to Israel.”
“If that happens, Palestinian residents who remain in northern Gaza will be expelled, as suggested by Maj. Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, under threat of starvation and under cover of 'protecting their lives' while the Israeli military hunts down Hamas militants in that sector,” he adds.

Turkiye’s BRICS Bid: Strategic Shift Or Diplomatic Leverage?
Ankara’s bid to join BRICS signals a potential shift toward multipolarity in its foreign policy priorities. Will Turkiye’s membership be thwarted by its NATO allies, or is this merely a political play to nudge the west into opening its pursestrings?
NATO member Turkiye’s formal application to join the BRICS group of emerging economies earlier this month has garnered widespread attention. While the Turkish Foreign Ministry and the Directorate of Communications have yet to officially confirm or deny the news, there have been several indirect confirmations from Turkish and Russian officials.
Omer Celik, a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), couched his response to reporters carefully:
Our president has stated at various times that we want to be a member [of BRICS] ... Our request on this issue is clear. This process is underway in this framework, but there is no concrete development on this.
Further confirmation of Turkiye’s membership bid came from Yuri Ushakov, BRICS chair and Russian President Putin’s foreign policy advisor, who has publicly stated:
"Turkiye has applied for full membership. We will consider this application."
In addition, Sputnik reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan, scheduled for 22–24 September. This aligns with prior announcements that Erdogan would also attend the next Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting for heads of state.
These developments emphasize Ankara’s interest in the multipolar order that BRICS represents, especially following its failed bids to join the EU, though Turkiye’s official stance remains unclear – perhaps deliberately so.

As the disobedience continued, the US took the route of sanctioning the individual banks that did not comply in these countries, forcing them to have a sort of foot in both camps, one in the BRICs/Mir/CHIPs axis, another in the Western/SWIFT axis.
