Families Of American Citizens Held In Gaza Want US To Cut A Deal With Hamas
It's unclear if the US could offer anything that Hamas would want
The families of American citizens who are being held hostage in Gaza are asking the US to consider making a unilateral deal with Hamas that wouldn’t involve Israel, NBC News reported on Wednesday.
The families made the request on Sunday during a meeting with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, which came after the Israeli military recovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages, including US-Israeli citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin.
Sources told NBC that the US told the families they would consider “every option” but said they believe a deal with Hamas that includes Israel is still the best approach. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been sabotaging the chances of the deal by continuing to demand Israeli control of the Gaza-Egypt border, known as the Philadelphi Corridor.
After the six bodies were recovered from Gaza, families of the dead hostages said Netanyahu was to blame for their deaths for not reaching a deal. The US has refused to put any real pressure on Netanyahu to reach a ceasefire and continues to ship weapons to Israel to support the genocidal slaughter in Gaza.
It’s unclear whether the US has anything it could offer Hamas to secure the release of the remaining Americans in Gaza. According to NBC , there are four Americans who the US believes are still alive and three others believed to be dead.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has managed to work fearmongering over the perceived proliferation of misinformation, hate speech, and deepfakes into his message issued on the occasion of the upcoming International Day of Democracy.
Not only that but as far as the UN is concerned, this year’s Day of Democracy is focused on – of all things – (at this point in time, upcoming at some later point in time) artificial intelligence (AI).
Though the press release might look like a “politically correct word salad,” it does show a purpose – and that’s pressing for global AI regulation.
The way is, perpetuating the fear that AI, such as it is today, is truly a possible threat to “democracy, peace, and stability.”
According to the UN website , Guterres took this opportunity to frame the problem of erosion of free speech, civil liberties, rule of law, and diminishing trust (ostensibly in legacy media and institutions) as the consequence of that “proliferation of harm.”
The Guterres statement starts off reasonably enough: on International Day of Democracy, these now-under-threat values are the ones that need to be promoted.

Wave Of Resignations Continues In Israel As Police Intel Chief Steps Down
The commander of Israel’s ground forces and the head of the army’s Unit 8200 are also set to resign, Hebrew media reported this week
The chief of Israel’s police intelligence division plans to resign, Israeli media reported on 4 September.
This comes amidst a recent wave of resignations in the Israeli military and security establishment.
“Dep. Ch. Dror Assaraf, head of the police intelligence division, announced to [newly appointed] Police Commissioner Daniel Levi on Wednesday, his intention to step down from his role,” the Jerusalem Post said.
According to Hebrew newspaper Maariv, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir – who is in charge of the prison system and police – has been blocking the promotion of several officers, including Assaraf. Israeli media reported earlier this year that Israel’s High Court has shown great concern over a law passed in December 2022 which granted Ben Gvir broader power over the police system.
The same Maariv report, released on 4 September, said that the appointment of every new police commissioner is accompanied by a wave of resignations. It adds that some realize they may not get promoted and decide to resign, while others are notified that they should retire.
Assaraf is the fourth to resign from his post in recent days.
Major General Tamir Yadai, the commander of the Israeli army’s ground forces, decided to resign for “personal reasons,” Hebrew news site Walla reported on 3 September.
Walla also recently reported that the commander of Israel’s Unit 8200, Brigadier General Yossi Shariel, plans to announce his resignation in weeks to come. Unit 8200 is the same unit whose headquarters was targeted by Hezbollah as part of its retaliatory attack in late August.
Ynet reported that the intelligence chief of the army’s Gaza Division also plans to leave his post.
In April, Aharon Haliva, head of the military intelligence directorate, resigned over his failure to prevent Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October.
Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar has also reportedly expressed an intention to resign for the same reason once the war ends.
Israeli journalist Yossi Yehoshua wrote for the Ynet news outlet on 4 September that Israeli army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has also “taken responsibility [for 7 October] and is also expected to resign in due course. Perhaps this will really happen in the coming months.”

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was shot in the head while protesting alongside Palestinians against Jewish settlement expansion and settler violence near Nablus
Israeli forces shot and killed a female international activist during an anti-occupation protest in the town of Beita near Nablus in the West Bank, WAFA news agency reported on 6 August.
Twenty-six-year-old Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a US citizen of Turkish descent, died on Friday after being shot in the head with live ammunition by Israeli forces in Beita, a town located south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.
Eygi was participating alongside local Palestinians in the weekly protest against settlement expansion.
WAFA added that the activist was rushed to Rafidia Hospital in Nablus and placed in the intensive care unit in an effort to save her life.
“We tried to perform a resuscitation operation on her, but unfortunately she died,” Rafidia Hospital Director Fouad Nafaa told Reuters.

Top German MP Threatens X And Telegram With Bans
Germany must act to stop the dissemination of extremist content online and block major social media platforms if necessary, a senior MP from the country’s Green Party has said.
MP Anton Hofreiter, the chairman of the Bundestag’s European policy committee, made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to reporters from Funke Media Group. The politician called for tighter control over social media, up to the outright blocking of certain platforms.
“One of the biggest problems of extremism is online radicalization,” Hofreiter stated, adding that the dissemination of “anti-constitutional content on the Internet” must be stopped.

Germany must act to stop the dissemination of extremist content online and block major social media platforms if necessary, a senior MP from the country’s Green Party has said.
MP Anton Hofreiter, the chairman of the Bundestag’s European policy committee, made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to reporters from Funke Media Group. The politician called for tighter control over social media, up to the outright blocking of certain platforms.
“One of the biggest problems of extremism is online radicalization,” Hofreiter stated, adding that the dissemination of “anti-constitutional content on the Internet” must be stopped.

Israel has launched a large-scale military operation in the occupied West Bank’s Tulkarm late on Tuesday. Footage by Al Jazeera Arabic shows Israeli bulldozers destroying infrastructure, including sewage systems, water, and electricity networks.
The Israeli army announced in a statement early on Wednesday that its forces “have now begun an operation to counter terrorism” in Jenin and Tulkarem. Israeli forces are also operating in the Faraa camp near Tubas.
Israeli media announces this invasion, which will reportedly involve thousands of soldiers and last for days, as the largest military operation in the occupied West Bank since 2002.
Military sources told the Times of Israel that the operation is expected to last several days.

The White House has sent 50,000 tons of weapons to Israel despite claims President Biden and VP Harris are working for a ceasefire in Gaza
The US military has completed its 500th flight airlifting over 50,000 tons of weapons and equipment to the Israeli army for its over ten-month onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced on 26 August.
In addition to the weapons and equipment airlifted to Israel since 7 October, Washington has sent Tel Aviv 107 shipments of military supplies by sea.
A Defense Ministry statement said the shipments include “armored vehicles, munitions, ammunition, personal protection gear, and medical equipment, which are crucial for sustaining the IDF’s operational capabilities during the ongoing war.”
The weapons shipments – that have enabled Israel to kill over 40,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and render Gaza uninhabitable – come as White House officials claim that US presidential candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris has been “working tirelessly” for a ceasefire agreement.
Muhammad Shehada of EuroMed Human Rights reported on 25 August that, according to multiple senior officials in Doha who were directly involved in the Israel–Gaza ceasefire talks, “There are currently no negotiations, only a sham theatre play.”

The US military has completed its 500th flight airlifting over 50,000 tons of weapons and equipment to the Israeli army for its over ten-month onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced on 26 August.

Dima never puts out a cigarette until he smokes it right down to the filter, risking burning his fingers to squeeze out one more drag. He spent years on the Ukrainian front lines. He knows the price of a good smoke.
As a battalion commander, Dima was in charge of around 800 men who fought in some of the fiercest, bloodiest battles of the war – most recently near Pokrovsk, the strategic eastern town that is now on the brink of falling to Russia.
But with most of his troops now dead or severely injured, Dima decided he’d had enough. He quit and took another job with the military – in an office in Kyiv.
Standing outside that office, chain smoking and drinking sweet coffee, he told CNN he just couldn’t handle watching his men die anymore.
Two and half years of Russia’s grinding offensive have decimated many Ukrainian units. Reinforcements are few and far between, leaving some soldiers exhausted and demoralized. The situation is particularly dire among infantry units near Pokrovsk and elsewhere on the eastern front line, where Ukraine is struggling to stop Russia’s creeping advances.
CNN spoke to six commanders and officers who are or were until recently fighting or supervising units in the area. All six said desertion and insubordination are becoming a widespread problem, especially among newly recruited soldiers.
Four of the six, including Dima, have asked for their names to be changed or withheld due to the sensitive nature of the topic and because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
“Not all mobilized soldiers are leaving their positions, but the majority are. When new guys come here, they see how difficult it is. They see a lot of enemy drones, artillery and mortars,” one unit commander currently fighting in Pokrovsk told CNN. He also asked to remain anonymous.
“They go to the positions once and if they survive, they never return. They either leave their positions, refuse to go into battle, or try to find a way to leave the army,” he added.
Unlike those who volunteered earlier in the war, many of the new recruits didn’t have a choice in entering the conflict. They were called up after Ukraine’s new mobilization law came into force in the spring and can’t leave legally until after the government introduces demobilization, unless they get special permission to do so.
