🚨BREAKING: Brazil: Supreme Court Judge Orders X To Be Banned, Threatens Citizens With Fines If They Use A VPN

Controversial Brazilian Supreme Court justice Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the suspension of Elon Musk’s social media platform X in Brazil after Musk refused to appoint a legal representative in the country.

The Attorney General Jorge Messias backed Moraes’ decision, threatening to impose a fine of R$ 50 thousand ($8,000+ USD) daily to any citizen that attempts to bypass the ban (such as using VPNs) to access X.

The decision marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Musk and the Brazilian judiciary after the social media platform refused to cave to Moraes’ demands to censor “misinformation,” and “hate speech” linked to critics of Brazil’s government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In response, X took to its official Global Government Affairs page late Thursday, claiming that it anticipated being shut down by de Moraes “simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents.”

The escalation is a troubling development for free speech, marking a significant escalation in governmental attempts to control online discourse. This order, which demands that X appoint a local legal representative and comply with censorship directives, represents a stark instance of government overreach. By targeting “misinformation” and “hate speech” specifically linked to government critics, the move suggests a politically motivated effort to stifle dissent—a core element of democratic societies.

Further compounding these concerns are the threats of legal repercussions against X’s leadership, including arrests of staff, which exemplify a worrying use of legal intimidation to enforce compliance. This not only threatens the principle of free expression but also establishes a chilling effect across digital platforms, potentially leading them to self-censor to avoid similar fates.

Zero-Day Vulnerability in Chrome Exploited by North Korean Hackers

A hacker group is using its signature trojan malware to infect users of web browsers with Chromium engines.

Microsoft cybersecurity researchers identified a zero-day vulnerability in Chromium, the engine that powers the Chrome web browser and others, that had been exploited by the North Korean hacker group they call Citrine Sleet. The vulnerability was patched on Aug. 21, so it is important for users to update their browsers.

Microsoft identified Citrine Sleet with “medium confidence.” The group is known to target the cryptocurrency sector and is the developer of the AppleJeus trojan malware that has also been used by the Lazarus Group of hackers.

Third zero-day vulnerability of the year
Microsoft has notified targeted and compromised customers, but it did not say how many customers were affected. This was the third exploited vulnerability of this type that has been patched in Chromium this year. Google, the owner of the Chromium engine, patched the vulnerability two days after it was reported.

The hackers used FudModule rootkit malware to gain remote code execution. To do so, they used sophisticated social engineering tactics:

“The threat actor creates fake websites masquerading as legitimate cryptocurrency trading platforms and uses them to distribute fake job applications or lure targets into downloading a weaponized cryptocurrency wallet or trading application based on legitimate applications.”
After that, the group commonly installed AppleJeus, which gathered the information needed to take control of the target’s crypto assets. Chrome versions prior to 128.0.6613.84 are vulnerable to attack.

US Rushes Weapons Shipments To Israel

According to flight data, there's been a spike in US arms deliveries to Israel since the end of July

The US has been rushing weapons shipments to Israel since the end of July, Haaretz reported on Thursday , citing open-sourced aviation data.

Dozens of US military transport flights, as well as Israeli civilian and military and cargo planes, have landed at the base, mainly traveling from Qatar and the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Besides helping Israel prepare for a potential attack from Iran, the US weapons shipments also help fuel the slaughter in Gaza and Israel’s operations in the West Bank, which significantly escalated on Wednesday . Israeli forces launched their largest attack on the Israeli-occupied West Bank since the Second Intifada in the early 2000s.

The rush in arms shipments also shows strong support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been working to prevent a ceasefire deal with Hamas , and shows President Biden and Vice President Harris are not serious about ending the slaughter in Gaza.

The Israeli Defense Ministry said on Monday that the US had delivered over 50,000 tons of weapons and other military equipment since October 7. The ministry said the US support was “crucial for sustaining the IDF’s operational capabilities during the ongoing war.”

Ukrainian President Fires Air Force Commander After Fatal F-16 Crash -​Military Times

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired the commander of the country’s air force Friday, four days after an F-16 warplane that Ukraine received from its Western partners crashed during a Russian bombardment and killed the pilot.

The order to dismiss Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk was published on the presidential website.

“We need to protect people. Protect personnel. Take care of all our soldiers,” Zelenskyy said in an address minutes after the order was published. He said Ukraine needs to strengthen its army on the command level.

Lt. Gen. Anatolii Kryvonozhko was appointed acting air force commander, the army’s general staff said.

The dismissal came on the same day that Oleshchuk directed scathing criticism at a lawmaker who is deputy head of the Ukrainian parliament’s defense committee for her claims that the F-16 was downed by a Patriot air-defense system. Ukraine has received an unspecified number of the U.S.-made systems.

Mariana Bezuhla cited unnamed sources for her claim and demanded punishment for those responsible for the error.

Oleshchuk accused Bezuhla of defaming the air force and discrediting U.S. arms manufacturers and said that he hoped she would face legal consequences for her claims.

“The truth will win,” Bezuhla posted on X shortly after the dismissal order was published.

The air force did not directly deny that the F-16 was hit by a Patriot missile.

U.S. experts have joined the Ukrainian investigation into the crash, the air force said.

....In other developments, European Union defense ministers agreed in Brussels to boost their training program for Ukrainian troops....“The training has to be shortened and adapted to the Ukrainian training needs,” Borrell said. He added that the EU would set up a small “coordination and liaison cell” in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv to make the training effort more effective.

So far, 60,000 troops have passed through the bloc’s training scheme, which is conducted outside Ukraine.

A new poll conducted by the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) at Tel Aviv University has revealed Israeli Jews’ opinions regarding whether Israeli soldiers should be prosecuted for raping Palestinian detainees and whether Israel should launch a wide-scale war against Hezbollah and Iran.

The poll asked a question regarding the five soldiers recently accused of torturing and sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee at the notorious Sde Teiman camp.

The poll stated, “If it is found that there is a basis for suspicion against the five suspects, how should they be treated?”

A large majority of Israeli Jews, 65 percent, responded, “They should be disciplined at the command level only.”

In contrast, only 21 percent said they should be prosecuted. The remaining 14 percent said, “I don’t know.”

Aug 20th: UK Police Arrest Journalist Richard Medhurst Under ‘Terrorism Act’

Medhurst, a strong critic of Israel, was arrested and detained for 24 hours at Heathrow Airport in London

Syrian-British journalist Richard Medhurst was arrested and held for 24 hours upon his arrival at Heathrow Airport earlier this month, he announced on 20 August.

Medhurst stated via social media that six police officers were waiting for him as he exited his plane in London on 15 August, adding that he was questioned under the Terrorism Act, Section 12.

"I believe I'm the first journalist to be arrested under this provision of the Terrorism Act. I feel that this is a political persecution and hampers my ability to work as a journalist," Medhurst explained.

Among other things, Section 12 of the UK Terrorism Act stipulates that a person “commits an offense” if they invite “support for a proscribed organization,” “expresses an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organization,” “arranges, manages or assists in arranging or managing a meeting which he knows is to support a proscribed organization,” or "addresses a meeting and the purpose of his address is to encourage support for a proscribed organization or to further its activities."

Other British journalists who have reported critically on Israeli, UK, and US foreign policy have also been detained and harassed upon returning to their home country, including The Cradle contributor Kit Klarenberg and Vanessa Beeley, who is well known for her reporting from Syria during the US and Israeli-backed regime change war.

Ukrainian Soldier Says Western Intelligence Was Used For Kursk Attack

The soldier said one purpose of the invasion of Kursk was to demoralize Russian civilians

A Ukrainian soldier speaking to the Japanese broadcaster NHK has said that Western intelligence was used to monitor Russian troop activity in Russia’s Kursk Oblast before Ukrainian forces launched an invasion of the region.

“He says the Ukrainian military surveilled Kursk using drones and satellites, and detailed intelligence data provided by the West was crucial for the operation,” NHK reported.

The US has denied that it was involved in the planning of the invasion but has offered strong support by allowing Ukrainian forces to use US-provided armored vehicles, missiles , and bombs . Ukraine is now pushing hard for the US to allow its weapons to be used for long-range strikes.

The Ukrainian soldier, who was described as a spokesman for a Ukrainian brigade, suggested one purpose of the invasion of Kursk was to demoralize the Russian civilian population.

“We should not forget about the moral and psychological factor of the Russian civilian population,” he said. “Our operation was planned both tactically and as a move to demoralize the enemy.”

War On Gaza: Aid Workers Killed In Israeli Strike On Humanitarian Convoy

An Israeli air strike has hit a humanitarian aid convoy laden with medical supplies and fuel for an Emirati -run hospital in Rafah, killing several workers.

Israeli forces claimed the attack targeted “armed assailants” who were attempting to hijack the convoy, which was organised by the US charity, Anera.

But Anera said that several employees of the transportation company it had worked with had been killed in the attack.

All the fatalities were in the vehicle leading the convoy, which was the target of the attack.

According to unconfirmed reports, five people were killed in the strike.

Danish Justice Minister Under Fire For Pushing Encryption Ban While Using It

The unprecedented case of the attack on Telegram via the arrest of Pavel Durov – and the nature of the charges against him – has clearly emboldened not only the lovers of censorship (such as the EU) but also the enemies of encryption (the EU).

Encryption itself has long been in the crosshairs in the bloc, but also in various individual countries in Europe individually, and others around the world. This push to undermine encryption – despite it being the key component of security, and privacy online – is habitually justified as necessary for law enforcement to do its job.

Now EU member Denmark is trying to come for end-to-end encryption, and not only Telegram, but also Signal, WhatsApp, and others. In this particular instance, Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard’s preferred course of action would be to just block these apps (perhaps as a stopgap measure) rather than taking the much longer path of building encryption backdoors.

Judging by reports in the Danish press, Hummelgaard wants to use this moment to further increase pressure on encrypted services, unsurprisingly giving “fighting crime” as the reason.

And while Hummelgaard considers such services as “safe havens” for criminals (it’s the same as saying states are safe havens for criminals because criminals operate in them), a large number of Danish MPs use encrypted apps – according to an investigative report in frihedsbrevet.dk, at least 70. (The country’s parliament has 179 seats).

To make matters even more absurd, Hummelgaard was (or still is) one of them.

EU Tightens Grip On Telegram With New Probe Following France Arrest

The EU is putting additional pressure on Telegram, after one of its member countries, France, arrested the platform’s co-founder and CEO Pavel Durov.

The EU has launched an investigation into the number of users the platform has in the bloc, and whether the number reported by Telegram is correct.

The importance of this is the EU’s ability to censor using the Digital Services Act (DSA), which applies services with over 45 million users.

In February, Telegram said that their number is 41 million, but the EU has chosen precisely this moment to start looking for ways to determine if this reporting was accurate – or, more likely, try to prove that it isn’t.

The EU Commission’s Joint Research Center is tasked with the job, while there are “ongoing talks with the app” regarding the way it arrived at its figure, the Financial Times writes , without expanding on the “ongoing talks” point.
