Namibia Blocks Ship Carrying 'Explosive Material' For Israel Citing Genocide Convention

Windhoek confirmed the decision complies with its 'obligation not to support or be complicit in Israeli war crimes'

The Namibian government has barred the Portuguese-flagged MV Kathrin cargo vessel from entering its territorial waters under suspicions that the ship carries military equipment and “explosive material” for Israel.

“Yes, I have asked Namport via the line ministry to consider the request to not allow the vessel MV Kathrin to dock in our ports. The request was made on Friday,” Justice Minister Yvonne Dausab told Namibian daily New Era on 26 August.

“Upon receiving reports that a vessel may be carrying weapons intended for Israel, I addressed a letter to Cabinet, international relations ministry, works ministry, as well as the safety and security ministry, advising and reminding them of our international obligations, not only under the Genocide Convention but also as articulated in the recent advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ),” she added.

Citing a police investigation, Dausab confirmed the MV Kathrin was “indeed carrying explosive material destined for Israel.” “Namibia complies with our obligation not to support or be complicit in Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, as well as its unlawful occupation of Palestine."

The ship, owned by German company Concord Shipping, had requested permission to dock at the port of Walvis Bay before continuing its journey north, likely toward the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar.

Israel Has Launched a Massive Assault on the West Bank. Why and Why Now?

Hundreds of Israeli soldiers are conducting a major assault in the occupied West Bank in Jenin, Tulkarem and the Far’a refugee camp near Tubas.

Israeli forces have killed at least 10 Palestinians in what is said to be Israel’s largest assault there in 20 years as they claimed they are targeting “armed terrorists who posed a threat to security forces”.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) presidency condemned Israel’s assault and warned it could usher in “dire and dangerous” results. PA President Mahmoud Abbas returned early from a visit to Saudi Arabia.

Israeli assaults on refugee camps and towns in the West Bank are a near-daily occurrence and have intensified since October 7. The scale of the current attack raises questions about its timing and motives....

...Netanyahu has faced several domestic obstacles in recent months, including widespread protests against his rule, scathing criticism from the captives’ families over his lack of action to return their loved ones and increasing frustration from displaced Israelis.

Despite this growing burden and his giving the far right increasing influence, Netanyahu still holds a slight lead in national polls over his main rival for the premiership, Benny Gantz.

“Netanyahu is not a madman[he actually is tho],” Goldberg said. “He knows his constituency and his supporters. He knows most Israelis are at a loss in front of the unfolding of events over the past year, … but you will not find a single Jewish Zionist politician who has come up with an alternative political or military vision.”

Israel’s continued fight on multiple fronts is likely to continue, analysts said. Ongoing ceasefire talks over Gaza have hit multiple snags, Israel continues to hit Hezbollah targets and this latest assault is an intensification in an already simmering West Bank.

“There is a continuation to a genocidal logic unfolding in Gaza since October when there is no accountability and impunity is not just a likelihood or a possibility but virtually guaranteed because of the United States’s very specific role in this and to a lesser but still significant extent the EU’s role in all of this,” Elia Ayoub – a postdoctoral researcher, writer and host of the Fire These Times podcast – told Al Jazeera..

US Largely Silent On Israel’s West Bank Assault As Ally Jordan Gets Rattled

The US said it was seeking clarity on Israel’s objectives after its ally launched an offensive in the occupied West Bank which Palestinian and Israeli media said was the largest such attack since the Second Intifada.

“We are in touch with Israeli officials to learn more about the operation,” a national security council spokesperson told Middle East Eye.

“The United States supports Israel’s right to defend itself against threats to its security. At the same time, they must do so in a way that limits civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure”.

Israeli troops landed in parts of the northern West Bank in military helicopters and large convoys of armoured vehicles, attacking three cities – Jenin, Tulkarm and Tubas.

Despite the breadth and magnitude of the offensive mirroring Israeli military operations during the Palestinian uprising of the early 2000s, the Biden administration has so far held off on publicly addressing the matter, outside of responding to journalists.

”The number of military vehicles storming Jenin is very large,” Shatha Sabagh, a Jenin camp resident, told MEE.

“The three main hospitals are besieged and all the streets leading to the city are closed with dirt barriers. We have not witnessed an incursion this extensive for a long time, and it seems that it will continue for several days.”

EU Considers Training Ukrainian Troops Inside Ukraine

Ukraine believes training soldiers in its territory would be 'faster, more cost-effective, and logistically easier'

The EU has said it would consider a Ukrainian request for training soldiers inside Ukraine “should the necessary political and operational conditions be met,” POLITICO reported on Tuesday .

An EU External Action Service document from July , obtained by POLITICO, says that the EU would need to do more analysis on the idea of training soldiers in Ukraine and acknowledges that doing so would be provocative toward Russia and endanger the trainers.

“A further and a more comprehensive analysis would be needed, in order to fully assess the risks and possible mitigation measures, as well as political and operational advantages of conducting some training,” the document reads.

The document says it’s “highly likely that an EU military presence on Ukrainian soil would be perceived by Russia as a provocation” and adds that it’s “not feasible” for the EU to protect trainers it sends to Ukraine.

Some EU countries have expressed support for sending trainers to Ukraine, including France. After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in June, French President Emmanuel Macron said he would “finalize” a plan to send troops to Ukraine, but it never materialized.

Human Rights Activist Sarah Wilkinson Arrested By UK Police

Her arrest follows the detention of Syrian-British journalist Richard Medhurst in London and Telegram founder Pavel Durov in Paris

British human rights activist and social media influencer Sarah Wilkinson was arrested by UK police on 29 August, reportedly over “content she posted online.”

“The police came to her house just before 7.30am. [Twelve] of them in total, some of them in plain clothes from the counter-terrorism police. They said she was under arrest for ‘content that she has posted online.’ Her house is being raided, and they have seized all her electronic devices," Jack Wilkinson is quoted as saying by the social media account Suppressed News.

“The pro-genocide UK regime has arrested [MENAUncensored's] roving reporter and Human Rights Activist Sarah Wilkinson for supporting the Palestinian resistance and relaying what is really happening in Gaza and the West Bank to the world,” MENA Uncensored announced via social media, alleging Wilkinson was accused of supporting “terrorism.”

UK police did not issue a statement about Wilkinson's arrest at the time of publication.

The British activist and reporter has been an outspoken critic of the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Earlier this year, she took part in the “Freedom Flotilla Coalition,” an international initiative that tried to deliver humanitarian aid directly into Gaza.

‘No Business As Usual’ – Amnesty Urges EU To Respect ICJ And Halt Arms, Trade With Israel

Amnesty International has called on the European Union to ensure that its policies are aligned with the International Court of Justice’s findings on Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian land, stressing that there can be “no business as usual” with Tel Aviv.

“The ICJ Advisory Opinion leaves no room for doubt,” said Eve Geddie, Director of Amnesty International’s European Institutions Office in a statement on Wednesday. “The Israeli occupation and its annexation of Palestinian territory are unlawful, as are its policy of establishing settlements, the confiscation of land and exploitation of the natural resources of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Amnesty submitted a letter to EU Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell and EU Foreign Ministers, ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

The letter urged the EU to implement several measures to comply with the ICJ’s findings of July 19.

Geddie said these include imposing a “comprehensive arms embargo” on Israel, in particular “all arms or equipment or technology or parts that allow Israel to maintain its unlawful occupation, including policing and surveillance equipment” used in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT); banning trade and investments in Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem; banning investing in Israeli companies or banks that are contributing to maintain Israel’s unlawful occupation; and conducting a legal assessment to determine which aspects of EU-Israel cooperation violate international law.

Many also chafe against Yair’s excessive level of personal security, since Unit 730 is typically assigned to only the seven top public officials in Israel: the president, prime minister, defense minister, foreign minister, Knesset speaker, opposition leader and Supreme Court president.

The request has outraged Israelis.

“And (Netanyahu) wants more money for his son who isn’t even fighting in the war — and has been hiding in Miami the whole time? This is outrageous!” one wealthy Israeli in Tel Aviv (who, despite being over 50, has rejoined the reserves) told me.
