‘The leaks are likely the most severe in Israel’s history -- an unprecedented looting of gigabytes upon gigabytes of information of all sorts,’ says Israeli daily

Anti-Israel hackers have released extensive amounts of classified data amid Israel’s struggle to contain leaks, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported Tuesday.

The leaks, according to the newspaper, involve tens of thousands of sensitive documents and emails stolen from Israeli institutions, including the Justice Ministry.

The attacks, which began on Oct. 7, 2023, have targeted a wide range of entities, from military and defense contractors to hospitals and government ministries. The scale of the breach has overwhelmed Israel’s cybersecurity infrastructure.

“The true extent of the damage to Israel’s security and economy caused by these leaks is not yet fully known,” a source close to the investigation revealed. “Despite massive investment in defensive cybersecurity measures, the scale of the leaks is likely the most severe in Israel's history -- an unprecedented looting of gigabytes upon gigabytes of information of all sorts."

The leaked data has appeared on platforms like Telegram, prompting a series of takedown attempts by Israeli authorities. However, Telegram’s limited moderation policies have complicated these efforts.

“Telegram emerged at the start of the war as a key platform utilized by Hamas' information warfare against Israel, one Israel was unable to properly address, lacking both monitoring capabilities and an understanding of the platform,” Haaretz reported.

Israel Buying Ads on Google Searches of ‘UNRWA’ to Discredit UN Agency

Ad draws Google users to website filled with allegations linking UN agency to Hamas, according to a report by Wired

Israel is buying advertising on Google search results for “Unrwa”, in a clear attempt to discredit the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Wired reported on Monday.

According to the report, the Israeli government advertising agency bought ads for searches for “Unrwa” and “Unrwa USA” to draw search users to a website linking the agency to Hamas.

On the government-run website, Israel alleges that Unrwa has not declared whether employing Hamas members violates its neutrality, a charge the agency strongly rejects.

In January, several western countries suspended financing Unrwa after Israel accused 12 of the organisation’s 30,000 employees of participating in the surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel on 7 October.

The Colonna report, which was commissioned by the UN to probe Israel’s allegations, found that Israeli authorities had not provided “any supporting evidence” to back up allegations of Unrwa staff links to Hamas.

It also made recommendations for Unrwa, which included strengthening its internal audit function and improving external oversight of project management.

Since publishing the report, several countries have restored funding to the agency, including the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada and Sweden.

Staff at Unrwa, who noticed the Israeli ads on Google, appealed to the tech giant to remove what they deemed to be a misinformation campaign. The adverts remain on Google search results, as of late August.

Between May and July, when users searched 300 terms related to Unrwa, Israel’s ads came up 44 percent of the time. Unrwa USA’s own advert appeared just 34 percent of the time.

Amnesty Urges War Crimes Probe Of ‘Indiscriminate’ Israeli Attacks On Gaza Camps

The human rights group said Israeli forces "failed to distinguish between civilians and military objectives by using unguided munitions in an area full of civilians sheltering in tents."

In an investigation focusing on a pair of Israeli massacres of forcibly displaced Palestinians in Gaza , Amnesty International on Monday urged the International Criminal Court – whose chief prosecutor has already applied for warrants to arrest Israeli and Hamas leaders – to open a war crimes probe of the attacks, which it said were likely “indiscriminate” and “disproportionate.”

“On May 26, 2024, two Israeli airstrikes on the Kuwaiti Peace Camp, a makeshift camp for internally displaced people in Tal al-Sultan in west Rafah, killed at least 36 people – including six children – and injured more than 100,” noted Amnesty, which early in the assault on Gaza found “ damning evidence ” of Israeli war crimes including indiscriminate killing of civilians.

The Tal al-Sultan attack, which hit an Israeli-designated “safe zone,” ignited an inferno that burned people alive inside the tents in which they were sheltering. One survivor told Amnesty that “there were so many dead people all around us,” many of them “in pieces and in pools of blood.”

The Amnesty report states that the airstrikes, “which targeted two Hamas commanders staying amid displaced civilians, consisted of two U.S.-made GBU-39 guided bombs” and that “the use of these munitions, which project deadly fragments over a wide area, in a camp housing civilians in overcrowded temporary shelters likely constituted a disproportionate and indiscriminate attack, and should be investigated as a war crime.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Tal al-Sultan massacre a “tragic mistake.”

Establishment Voices Attack Telegram Over Free Speech Protections In Wake Of Founder’s Arrest

Legacy media and some establishment figures are busy justifying the arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov, attacking the platform, but also making not-so-veiled threats aimed at other platform owners.

Ukrainian-born former member of the US National Security Council Alexander Vindman, who played a key role in the first impeachment trial of Donald Trump, took to X (calling it “Twitter”) – to warn the social site and its owner Elon Musk that there could be “broader implications” in the context of the Durov arrest.

To Musk specifically, Vindman’s extraordinary message, which reads very much like a threat, is that he “should be worried.” As ever, the accusation is that X is allowing “misinformation” – that is, not censoring enough. And the implication is that unless that happens, there could be more arrests.

In one post Vindman went through the Democrat keywords (mentioning “MAGA tech bros,” “weirdos,” referring to Trump as “sexual predator”) and expressed admiration for the EU’s way of “enforcing content moderation” – ostensibly, as opposed to his adoptive country.

Former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt was also on X to reiterate how EU elites see, and treat the issue of free speech while throwing around dramatically-worded accusations: “Telegram sits at the center of global cybercrime… Free speech is not without responsibilities!”

Officials who no longer hold formal office often serve to express some extreme points of view that those in government would rather not say publicly, and other handy mouthpieces are always legacy media outlets.

Nevada Politician Found Guilty Of Reporter'S Murder

A former Nevada politician was found guilty on Wednesday for the murder of an investigative journalist who wrote critical stories about his time in office.

Robert Telles, 47, has been jailed since 2022 for the stabbing of Las Vegas Review-Journal journalist Jeff German.

At trial, prosecutors presented the jury with DNA evidence found under Mr German's fingernails that they said belonged to Telles - who had pleaded not guilty.

A jury of 12 returned a guilty verdict on Wednesday, however, after deliberating for two days.

Telles, who was elected Clark County public administrator in 2018, took the stand during the trial and proclaimed his own innocence.

...In September 2022, Mr German, 69, was found after he was stabbed seven times in the neck and torso outside his Nevada home.

The veteran reporter had spent more than four decades covering the city and corruption.

He had written multiple articles about Telles, alleging hostile behaviour in his Las Vegas office and an affair with a subordinate.

Mr German had one more article to publish about Telles at the time of his death.

Namibia Blocks Ship Carrying 'Explosive Material' For Israel Citing Genocide Convention

Windhoek confirmed the decision complies with its 'obligation not to support or be complicit in Israeli war crimes'

The Namibian government has barred the Portuguese-flagged MV Kathrin cargo vessel from entering its territorial waters under suspicions that the ship carries military equipment and “explosive material” for Israel.

“Yes, I have asked Namport via the line ministry to consider the request to not allow the vessel MV Kathrin to dock in our ports. The request was made on Friday,” Justice Minister Yvonne Dausab told Namibian daily New Era on 26 August.

“Upon receiving reports that a vessel may be carrying weapons intended for Israel, I addressed a letter to Cabinet, international relations ministry, works ministry, as well as the safety and security ministry, advising and reminding them of our international obligations, not only under the Genocide Convention but also as articulated in the recent advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ),” she added.

Citing a police investigation, Dausab confirmed the MV Kathrin was “indeed carrying explosive material destined for Israel.” “Namibia complies with our obligation not to support or be complicit in Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, as well as its unlawful occupation of Palestine."

The ship, owned by German company Concord Shipping, had requested permission to dock at the port of Walvis Bay before continuing its journey north, likely toward the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar.

Israel Has Launched a Massive Assault on the West Bank. Why and Why Now?

Hundreds of Israeli soldiers are conducting a major assault in the occupied West Bank in Jenin, Tulkarem and the Far’a refugee camp near Tubas.

Israeli forces have killed at least 10 Palestinians in what is said to be Israel’s largest assault there in 20 years as they claimed they are targeting “armed terrorists who posed a threat to security forces”.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) presidency condemned Israel’s assault and warned it could usher in “dire and dangerous” results. PA President Mahmoud Abbas returned early from a visit to Saudi Arabia.

Israeli assaults on refugee camps and towns in the West Bank are a near-daily occurrence and have intensified since October 7. The scale of the current attack raises questions about its timing and motives....

...Netanyahu has faced several domestic obstacles in recent months, including widespread protests against his rule, scathing criticism from the captives’ families over his lack of action to return their loved ones and increasing frustration from displaced Israelis.

Despite this growing burden and his giving the far right increasing influence, Netanyahu still holds a slight lead in national polls over his main rival for the premiership, Benny Gantz.

“Netanyahu is not a madman[he actually is tho],” Goldberg said. “He knows his constituency and his supporters. He knows most Israelis are at a loss in front of the unfolding of events over the past year, … but you will not find a single Jewish Zionist politician who has come up with an alternative political or military vision.”

Israel’s continued fight on multiple fronts is likely to continue, analysts said. Ongoing ceasefire talks over Gaza have hit multiple snags, Israel continues to hit Hezbollah targets and this latest assault is an intensification in an already simmering West Bank.

“There is a continuation to a genocidal logic unfolding in Gaza since October when there is no accountability and impunity is not just a likelihood or a possibility but virtually guaranteed because of the United States’s very specific role in this and to a lesser but still significant extent the EU’s role in all of this,” Elia Ayoub – a postdoctoral researcher, writer and host of the Fire These Times podcast – told Al Jazeera..
