Netanyahu Accused Of Blocking Ceasefire Talks Again With ‘Outdated, Unacceptable’ Netzarim Plan
The prime minister insisted on sending Israel’s team to present the plan despite them having rejected it months ago
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tasked the Israeli negotiating team with presenting his plan for the Netzarim corridor in Gaza to mediators in Cairo – despite it having been rejected months ago, Hebrew media reported on 27 August.
Security sources told Ynet on Tuesday that Netanyahu tasked the team this week “with presenting in Cairo the outline he accepted for solving the Netzarim axis issue, the exact same idea that had already been rejected in the past.”
This plan includes “digging trenches across the axes that cross Netzarim from north to south in a way that would not allow the passage of vehicles, and diverting vehicles that request to cross to the east, towards the perimeter, where they will pass an inspection and enter the north.”
The proposal for Netzarim was taken off the table months ago for several reasons, the report added.
Among these reasons are how long it would take to implement, its hindrance to the Palestinian movement, and “above all – there is no chance that it will be accepted by Hamas, or the mediators.”
“The negotiating team has already told Netanyahu that they strongly oppose this proposal, but the Prime Minister insisted that it be forwarded to the mediators – who, as expected, rejected it outright,” Ynet said.
A source in the negotiating team told the Hebrew outlet that “if we resolve one clause [of the ceasefire proposal] … Netanyahu brings another.”
The report also highlights how the negotiating team has been restricted by Netanyahu, further complicating the deal.
The Israeli team headed to Cairo on Sunday. Hamas has opted out of the talks and is demanding a return to a 2 July proposal based on an outline announced by Joe Biden in late May.

Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir sparked a backlash on Monday by saying that he wanted to build a synagogue on the Al-Asqa Mosque compound in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.
Al-Aqsa, known to the Israelis as Temple Mount, is one of the holiest sites of Islam. “If I could do what I wanted, a synagogue would also be established on the Temple Mount,” Ben Gvir told Israel’s Army Radio. “If I were to say that Muslims are not allowed to pray, you would kill me.”
Under the decades-old status quo at al-Aqsa, non-Muslims can visit the site but cannot pray there. Over the past two months, Ben Gvir made three provocative visits to al-Aqsa and declared Jewish prayer was allowed, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to issue statements saying the status quo hasn’t changed.
Members of Netanyahu’s coalition government also denounced Ben Gvir’s actions, including Interior Minister Moshe Arbel , a member of the Haredi Shas party. He said Ben Gvir could hurt Israel’s efforts to build an anti-Iran alliance with Muslim nations.
“Prime Minister Netanyahu must promptly rein in Mr Ben Gvir regarding his Temple Mount statements this morning. His reckless words jeopardize Israel’s strategic alliances with Muslim nations, which form a crucial coalition against the Iranian axis of evil. His lack of judgment could have bloody consequences,” Arbel said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stated that recent negotiations to restore relations between Syria and Turkiye have not brought any results, despite the mediation efforts of several allied countries.
“The initiatives did not yield any results worth mentioning despite the seriousness and genuine keenness of mediators,” Assad said on 26 August in a speech to the Syrian parliament, referring to recent conciliation efforts by Russia, Iran, and Iraq.
“The solution is openness,” Assad said. “Restoring a relationship requires first removing the causes that led to its destruction.”

Israeli troops are torturing Palestinians from Gaza, including through the use of electric shocks and anal rape using M-16 rifle butts, according to the testimony of a Palestinian medic published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) on 27 August.
Walid Khalili, a Palestinian paramedic and ambulance driver, was abducted by Israeli soldiers in Gaza in November and taken to the Sde Teiman and Negev (Al-Naqab) detention centers in Israel.
Israeli troops abducted Khalili after he was dispatched to the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City to rescue four wounded men.
When he arrived, he saw Israeli troops execute the men on Mughrabi Street, near the Labor Ministry building.
“I saw the four men being executed in cold blood,” Khalili said. “I saw it with my own eyes, I was three meters away. When they were shot, I hid under the ambulance, and next to it there was a building, so then I ran inside the building. Reports continue to emerge of Israeli soldiers torturing and raping Palestinians in Gaza and at detention centers in Israel
Israeli troops are torturing Palestinians from Gaza, including through the use of electric shocks and anal rape using M-16 rifle butts, according to the testimony of a Palestinian medic published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) on 27 August.
Walid Khalili, a Palestinian paramedic and ambulance driver, was abducted by Israeli soldiers in Gaza in November and taken to the Sde Teiman and Negev (Al-Naqab) detention centers in Israel.
Israeli troops abducted Khalili after he was dispatched to the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City to rescue four wounded men.
When he arrived, he saw Israeli troops execute the men on Mughrabi Street, near the Labor Ministry building.
“I saw the four men being executed in cold blood,” Khalili said. “I saw it with my own eyes, I was three meters away. When they were shot, I hid under the ambulance, and next to it there was a building, so then I ran inside the building. The Israeli forces raided the building and started yelling at me to raise my hands.”

Anti-Israel hackers have released extensive amounts of classified data amid Israel’s struggle to contain leaks, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported Tuesday.
The leaks, according to the newspaper, involve tens of thousands of sensitive documents and emails stolen from Israeli institutions, including the Justice Ministry.
The attacks, which began on Oct. 7, 2023, have targeted a wide range of entities, from military and defense contractors to hospitals and government ministries. The scale of the breach has overwhelmed Israel’s cybersecurity infrastructure.
“The true extent of the damage to Israel’s security and economy caused by these leaks is not yet fully known,” a source close to the investigation revealed. “Despite massive investment in defensive cybersecurity measures, the scale of the leaks is likely the most severe in Israel's history -- an unprecedented looting of gigabytes upon gigabytes of information of all sorts."
The leaked data has appeared on platforms like Telegram, prompting a series of takedown attempts by Israeli authorities. However, Telegram’s limited moderation policies have complicated these efforts.
“Telegram emerged at the start of the war as a key platform utilized by Hamas' information warfare against Israel, one Israel was unable to properly address, lacking both monitoring capabilities and an understanding of the platform,” Haaretz reported.

Israel Buying Ads on Google Searches of ‘UNRWA’ to Discredit UN Agency
Ad draws Google users to website filled with allegations linking UN agency to Hamas, according to a report by Wired
Israel is buying advertising on Google search results for “Unrwa”, in a clear attempt to discredit the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Wired reported on Monday.
According to the report, the Israeli government advertising agency bought ads for searches for “Unrwa” and “Unrwa USA” to draw search users to a website linking the agency to Hamas.
On the government-run website, Israel alleges that Unrwa has not declared whether employing Hamas members violates its neutrality, a charge the agency strongly rejects.
In January, several western countries suspended financing Unrwa after Israel accused 12 of the organisation’s 30,000 employees of participating in the surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel on 7 October.
The Colonna report, which was commissioned by the UN to probe Israel’s allegations, found that Israeli authorities had not provided “any supporting evidence” to back up allegations of Unrwa staff links to Hamas.
It also made recommendations for Unrwa, which included strengthening its internal audit function and improving external oversight of project management.
Since publishing the report, several countries have restored funding to the agency, including the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada and Sweden.
Staff at Unrwa, who noticed the Israeli ads on Google, appealed to the tech giant to remove what they deemed to be a misinformation campaign. The adverts remain on Google search results, as of late August.
Between May and July, when users searched 300 terms related to Unrwa, Israel’s ads came up 44 percent of the time. Unrwa USA’s own advert appeared just 34 percent of the time.

Amnesty Urges War Crimes Probe Of ‘Indiscriminate’ Israeli Attacks On Gaza Camps
The human rights group said Israeli forces "failed to distinguish between civilians and military objectives by using unguided munitions in an area full of civilians sheltering in tents."
In an investigation focusing on a pair of Israeli massacres of forcibly displaced Palestinians in Gaza , Amnesty International on Monday urged the International Criminal Court – whose chief prosecutor has already applied for warrants to arrest Israeli and Hamas leaders – to open a war crimes probe of the attacks, which it said were likely “indiscriminate” and “disproportionate.”
“On May 26, 2024, two Israeli airstrikes on the Kuwaiti Peace Camp, a makeshift camp for internally displaced people in Tal al-Sultan in west Rafah, killed at least 36 people – including six children – and injured more than 100,” noted Amnesty, which early in the assault on Gaza found “ damning evidence ” of Israeli war crimes including indiscriminate killing of civilians.
The Tal al-Sultan attack, which hit an Israeli-designated “safe zone,” ignited an inferno that burned people alive inside the tents in which they were sheltering. One survivor told Amnesty that “there were so many dead people all around us,” many of them “in pieces and in pools of blood.”
The Amnesty report states that the airstrikes, “which targeted two Hamas commanders staying amid displaced civilians, consisted of two U.S.-made GBU-39 guided bombs” and that “the use of these munitions, which project deadly fragments over a wide area, in a camp housing civilians in overcrowded temporary shelters likely constituted a disproportionate and indiscriminate attack, and should be investigated as a war crime.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Tal al-Sultan massacre a “tragic mistake.”

The Tal al-Sultan attack, which hit an Israeli-designated “safe zone,” ignited an inferno that burned people alive inside the tents in which they were sheltering. One survivor told Amnesty that “there were so many dead people all around us,” many of them “in pieces and in pools of blood.”
The Amnesty report states that the airstrikes, “which targeted two Hamas commanders staying amid displaced civilians, consisted of two U.S.-made GBU-39 guided bombs” and that “the use of these munitions, which project deadly fragments over a wide area, in a camp housing civilians in overcrowded temporary shelters likely constituted a disproportionate and indiscriminate attack, and should be investigated as a war crime.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Tal al-Sultan massacre a “tragic mistake.”

Establishment Voices Attack Telegram Over Free Speech Protections In Wake Of Founder’s Arrest
Legacy media and some establishment figures are busy justifying the arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov, attacking the platform, but also making not-so-veiled threats aimed at other platform owners.
Ukrainian-born former member of the US National Security Council Alexander Vindman, who played a key role in the first impeachment trial of Donald Trump, took to X (calling it “Twitter”) – to warn the social site and its owner Elon Musk that there could be “broader implications” in the context of the Durov arrest.
To Musk specifically, Vindman’s extraordinary message, which reads very much like a threat, is that he “should be worried.” As ever, the accusation is that X is allowing “misinformation” – that is, not censoring enough. And the implication is that unless that happens, there could be more arrests.
In one post Vindman went through the Democrat keywords (mentioning “MAGA tech bros,” “weirdos,” referring to Trump as “sexual predator”) and expressed admiration for the EU’s way of “enforcing content moderation” – ostensibly, as opposed to his adoptive country.
Former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstadt was also on X to reiterate how EU elites see, and treat the issue of free speech while throwing around dramatically-worded accusations: “Telegram sits at the center of global cybercrime… Free speech is not without responsibilities!”
Officials who no longer hold formal office often serve to express some extreme points of view that those in government would rather not say publicly, and other handy mouthpieces are always legacy media outlets.
