Antiwar.com Joins Journalists In Letter To Blinken Calling For End To US Military Aid To Israel

The letter focuses on the Israeli killing of journalists in Gaza

Antiwar.com has joined 19 other news outlets, seven press freedom organizations, and 113 journalists in a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for the US to end weapons transfers to Israel to stop supporting the slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza.

The letter was initiated by the Courage Foundation, Defending Rights & Dissent, and Roots Action and focuses on the Israeli targeting of journalists in Gaza.

“Since October 7, 2023, Israel has killed more than 160 Palestinian journalists. This is the largest recorded number of journalists killed in any war. While Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of the densely populated Gaza means no civilians are safe, Israel has also been repeatedly documented deliberately targeting journalists,” the letter reads.

The letter notes that the mass killing in Gaza would not be possible without US weapons and support. “Israel’s military actions are not possible without US weapons, US military aid, and US diplomatic support. By providing the weapons being used to deliberately kill journalists, you are complicit in one of the gravest affronts to press freedom today,” it says.

Besides targeting Journalists with bombs, the Israeli government has also cracked down on the press, including by shutting down Al Jazeera in Israel. “Israel has gone to great lengths to suppress media coverage of its war in Gaza, imposing military censorship on both its own journalists and international reporters operating in the country; and, with Egypt’s help, blocking all foreign journalists from Gaza. Israel shut down Al Jazeera, raided its office, seized its equipment, and blocked its broadcasts and website within Israel,” the letter reads.

Senior UK Diplomat Resigns Over London’s ‘Complicity’ in Gaza War Crimes

This marks the latest in a string of resignations by western officials over their government's continued support of Israel's genocide of Palestinians

Mark Smith, the head of the Africa Programmes and Expertise Department and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), formally resigned on 16 August, citing London's continued arms sales to Israel.

In a letter titled “FCDO complicity in War Crimes,” Smith – an expert on the legality of UK arms sales – laments ending his long diplomatic career “in the knowledge that this Department may be complicit in War Crimes.”

“As [a] former penholder on the arms exports licensing assessment in [the Middle East and North Africa Department] MENAD, I am a subject matter expert in the domain of armed sales policy. Each day we witness clear and unquestionable examples of War Crimes and breaches of International Humanitarian Law in Gaza perpetrated by the State of Israel,” Smith writes.

“Senior members of the Israeli government and military have expressed open genocidal intent, Israeli soldiers take videos, deliberately burning destroying, and looting civilian property and openly admit to the rape and torture of prisoners,” the letter continues.

He also highlights that Israel's wholesale destruction of Gaza's infrastructure, their continued restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid, plus attacks on ambulances, schools, and hospitals all constitute war crimes.

Gaza Health Ministry: Over 40,000 Killed By Israeli Onslaught

The number doesn't include 10,000 that are missing and presumed dead under the rubble

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Thursday that the number of Palestinians it has recorded killed by the Israeli onslaught has surpassed 40,000, or about 2% of the population. The number is considered a conservative estimate since it doesn’t account for the 10,000 people who are missing and believed to be dead under the rubble.

The Health Ministry said a total of 40,005 Palestinians had been killed over ten months, including 40 that were killed by Israeli forces in the previous 24 hours. They also said a total of 92,401 Palestinians have been wounded.

The Health Ministry has identified 32,280 bodies by name , which includes 10,627 children, 5,956 women, and 2,770 elderly people. Gaza’s Media Office has estimated more than 16,000 children have been killed by the Israeli onslaught.

It’s unclear how many Palestinians have died due to indirect causes of the siege, such as food shortages, medicine shortages, the destruction of Gaza’s health facilities, and the spread of disease. Gaza’s Media Office has said at least 35 children have starved to death.

A letter written by a group of experts recently published in the British medical journal The Lancet estimated the total number of deaths in Gaza, including those killed by the Israeli military and indirect causes, could reach 186,000. The estimate used the death toll from the end of June, which was 37,396.

California Appeals Court Limits Privacy Rights Of Online Messages

A legal battle, seen as a major privacy rights issue, came down to the extent to which the Stored Communications Act (SCA) protects user data, and is now headed to the Supreme Court of California.

This comes after the California Court of Appeal ruled in the Snap, Inc. v. Superior Court case that the majority of remotely stored messages are not covered by the Act’s law designed to prevent unlawful access to stored communications – Section 2702.

The CSA is there to stop platforms that provide online communications and storage from sharing contents of users’ online accounts (messages, emails, photos…). There are some exceptions in the legislation itself, e.g., unless the government obtains a warrant, that sets the bar relatively high.

But now, it looks like Big Tech’s “standard” business model – exploiting user data for massive profits – is coming back to haunt those users in yet another way.

Namely, the California Court of Appeal has found that if providers of that stored user data already have access to it, in order to monetize this content, then that content is effectively already disclosed and CSA has no business trying to protect it.

And if this ruling stands, then tech companies can be asked to turn over user data without a warrant – a subpoena, the civil variety included – could potentially suffice.

Israel Massacres Gaza Family Following Two Days Of 'Constructive Ceasefire Talks

An Israeli airstrike killed 15 members of the Ajlah family in Gaza early Saturday, including nine children

Israel massacred an entire family in Gaza early on 17 August, one day after a senior US official claimed that the past two days of negotiations in Doha for a ceasefire in Gaza have been the most constructive in months.

Israel’s attack in central Gaza’s Al-Zawayda area killed 15 members of the Ajlah family, Al-Jazeera reported.

Palestinian Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal confirmed that nine children and three women were among those killed in the strike.

Ahmed Abu al-Ghoul, a local who witnessed the bombing, told AFP that three rockets hit the building the family was sheltering in while women and children were inside.

“What have they done to deserve this?” he asked.

In Dr. Strangelove, the fictitious base commander Jack D. Ripper orders a first-strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union to enact revenge for contaminating American water to “impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.” The satirical film poked fun at rampant Cold War conspiracy theories about fluoridating our water supply. But as it turns out, America’s water was being contaminated — not by the Russians, but by the Pentagon.

Not long after American audiences packed into theaters to watch the bleak Cold War comedy, the Department of Defense ramped up its use of a fire suppressant called AFFF, knowingly contaminating the drinking water of millions of Americans.

Now, the Department of Defense is refusing to take accountability.

This week, the Air Force claimed it has no legal obligation to comply with an order from the Environmental Protection Agency in May to abate the threat of “forever chemicals” to the drinking water of Tucson, Arizona. The EPA order required the Air Force to create a system designed to treat high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — synthetic chemicals known as PFAS that are linked to weakened immunity and other health risks — in drinking water, estimated to cost $25 million.

Testing at the Tucson International Airport Area Superfund Site has revealed PFAS levels of up to 5,300 times beyond the drinkable limit, which is “ likely to enter into the Tucson public water system,” according to the EPA. These chemicals likely originated from the use of AFFF at airports and military sites, such as nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and Morris Air National Guard Base.

US: Israeli Bombing Gaza Will Kill More Civilians But Not Defeat Hamas

US intelligence officials speaking with The New York Times said that Israel will not be able to defeat Hamas and continuing to bomb Gaza will kill more civilians. Some national security officials expressed surprise at how much Israel has degraded Hamas over the ten-month onslaught but acknowledged that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) cannot prevent the Palestinian group’s reorganization.

According to The Times , “Israel has achieved all that it can militarily in Gaza, according to senior American officials, who say continued bombings are only increasing risks to civilians.” The report adds that several high-level officials traveling to the Middle East plan to tell Tel Aviv “that there is little more Israel can accomplish against Hamas.”

The current and former national security officials touted Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza as surprisingly effective in degrading Hamas. However, the officials admit the IDF has been unable to destroy the tunnel network or keep Hamas from reestablishing itself after Israel forces withdraw.

“[Hamas’s tunnel] network has proved much larger than Israel anticipated, and it remains an effective way for Hamas to hide its leaders and move around fighters.” The Times continues, “And even as the Israel Defense Forces have seized territory and killed Hamas fighters from north to south of the territory, they have repeatedly had to go back in as Hamas fighters regrouped.”
