The Biden administration is “open” to sending Ukraine long-range air-to-surface cruise missiles amid Ukraine’s offensive in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, POLITICO reported on Thursday.
The Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) has a range of over 230 miles and would become the longest-range weapon the US sends Ukraine if it goes ahead with the delivery.
Sources told POLITICO that no final decision had been made as the Pentagon is trying to figure out if Ukraine’s Soviet-era fighter jets could carry the powerful missile, which weighs 2,400 pounds and has a 1,000-pound warhead.
Ukraine has received a small number of US-made F-16 fighter jets, which can carry the JASSMs. But it’s unclear when the F-16s will be put to use since only a few Ukrainian pilots have been trained.
The US is supporting Ukraine’s invasion of Kursk by allowing it to use US-provided weapons, including armored vehicles. The US still says it’s opposed to supporting long-range strikes in Russia, but it’s unclear what the limit is. Ukraine is pushing for the US to lift all restrictions on its use of US weapons.

Scientists Make Breakthrough After Digging 4,000ft Beneath 'Lost City' In The Atlantic
Scientists could be on the brink of a scientific breakthrough about how life originates after drilling deeper into the Earth than ever before.
The record-breaking study unearthed a long section of rocks from the Earth's mantle - the layer of solid rock between the planet's inner core and outer crust.
They drilled the over 4,000-foot-long rock core from a spot in the Atlantic Ocean called the 'Lost City Hydrothermal Field,' or more commonly, the 'Lost City.'
With further analysis, the rocks will help answer questions about the origins of life on Earth, and how the mantle drives volcanic activity and important global cycles, according to the researchers.
Led by researchers from the Universities of Cardiff and Leeds, the scientists traveled to the Lost City - a point about 1,500 miles east of South Florida - and extracted a mantle rock core from a nearby site.
The Lost City lies along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is one of the world's largest undersea mountain ranges at a length of 6,200 miles.
Despite what the name suggests, the Lost City isn't the site of a sunken Atlantis. It's actually a 'bizarre' hydrothermal vent system where seawater circulates beneath the seafloor.
It caught the attention of scientists because it produces vents up to 18 stories tall - the tallest ever seen - and the fluids forming these vents are heated by seawater reacting with million-year-old mantle rocks.
That may not sound as exciting as a mysterious civilization lost to the ocean, but these vents are massively important as they could hold secrets about how life emerged on our planet billions of years ago, experts say.
'The reaction between seawater and mantle rocks on or near the seafloor releases hydrogen, which in turn forms compounds such as methane, which underpin microbial life,' said study lead author Johan Lissenberg, a geologist at Cardiff University.
'This is one of the hypotheses for the origin of life on Earth.'

Although Japan does not recognize Palestine as an independent state, the East Asian nation hosts a semi-status diplomatic mission known as the Permanent General Mission of Palestine in Tokyo, inaugurated in 1977 to represent the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) government.
Tokyo is “now studying seriously, and also South Korea, recognizing the state of Palestine,” Siam told the Turkish news outlet. “They know that recognizing the state of Palestine does not hinder future peace talks between us and Israelis,” Siam added.
“Japan has consistently supported a ‘two-state solution’ through negotiations between the parties, understands the Palestinian people’s aspirations for the establishment of an independent state, and has supported Palestinian efforts toward this goal,” Japanese foreign ministry officials told AA via email.

One of the most jarring developments (and that’s saying something) this US campaign season so far has been the assassination attempt on former President Trump, now a candidate for the country’s highest office.

The Congress Republicans want to know – did Google and Meta, the most powerful message- and narrative-controlling online entities, deliberately suppress news stories about the assassination attempt? And why?
Google’s response to Senator Roger Marshall’s letter effectively asking these questions has left him seeing no option other than to have Google execs IMMEDIATELY (the capitalization in senator) subpoenaed by the Senate Homeland Committee.

Antiwar.com Joins Journalists In Letter To Blinken Calling For End To US Military Aid To Israel
The letter focuses on the Israeli killing of journalists in Gaza
Antiwar.com has joined 19 other news outlets, seven press freedom organizations, and 113 journalists in a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for the US to end weapons transfers to Israel to stop supporting the slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza.
The letter was initiated by the Courage Foundation, Defending Rights & Dissent, and Roots Action and focuses on the Israeli targeting of journalists in Gaza.
“Since October 7, 2023, Israel has killed more than 160 Palestinian journalists. This is the largest recorded number of journalists killed in any war. While Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of the densely populated Gaza means no civilians are safe, Israel has also been repeatedly documented deliberately targeting journalists,” the letter reads.
The letter notes that the mass killing in Gaza would not be possible without US weapons and support. “Israel’s military actions are not possible without US weapons, US military aid, and US diplomatic support. By providing the weapons being used to deliberately kill journalists, you are complicit in one of the gravest affronts to press freedom today,” it says.
Besides targeting Journalists with bombs, the Israeli government has also cracked down on the press, including by shutting down Al Jazeera in Israel. “Israel has gone to great lengths to suppress media coverage of its war in Gaza, imposing military censorship on both its own journalists and international reporters operating in the country; and, with Egypt’s help, blocking all foreign journalists from Gaza. Israel shut down Al Jazeera, raided its office, seized its equipment, and blocked its broadcasts and website within Israel,” the letter reads.

Marjayoun is a predominantly Christian (75%) and Sunni (20%) village, hence why the expansion of the scope of operations reflects Hezbollah's commitment to defending the entirety of southern Lebanon, regardless of village demography.

Senior UK Diplomat Resigns Over London’s ‘Complicity’ in Gaza War Crimes
This marks the latest in a string of resignations by western officials over their government's continued support of Israel's genocide of Palestinians
Mark Smith, the head of the Africa Programmes and Expertise Department and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), formally resigned on 16 August, citing London's continued arms sales to Israel.
In a letter titled “FCDO complicity in War Crimes,” Smith – an expert on the legality of UK arms sales – laments ending his long diplomatic career “in the knowledge that this Department may be complicit in War Crimes.”
“As [a] former penholder on the arms exports licensing assessment in [the Middle East and North Africa Department] MENAD, I am a subject matter expert in the domain of armed sales policy. Each day we witness clear and unquestionable examples of War Crimes and breaches of International Humanitarian Law in Gaza perpetrated by the State of Israel,” Smith writes.
“Senior members of the Israeli government and military have expressed open genocidal intent, Israeli soldiers take videos, deliberately burning destroying, and looting civilian property and openly admit to the rape and torture of prisoners,” the letter continues.
He also highlights that Israel's wholesale destruction of Gaza's infrastructure, their continued restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid, plus attacks on ambulances, schools, and hospitals all constitute war crimes.
