Israeli Troops Accused Of Gang Raping Palestinian Detainee Released On House Arrest

The Israeli military's investigation of soldiers who sodomized a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp is meant to protect Israel from prosecution by international tribunals

The Israeli military attorney’s office and defense lawyers agreed on the release to house arrest of the five soldiers accused of raping a Palestinian man in the notorious Sde Teiman detention camp, Haaretz reported on 13 August.

The Israeli army spokesman said the five soldiers will be released to house arrest for 10 days and that during this period, they will be referred to a review by the Probation Service.

At the end of the investigation next week, a hearing procedure will be held for the suspects, similar to the one conducted before the filing of an indictment.

The lawyers from the military defense argued that house arrest was appropriate for the soldiers because of the time it would take to review the case and because the soldiers do not pose a threat to the public.

On 8 August, a leaked surveillance video from Sde Teiman was broadcast on Israeli news network Channel 12, showing the Israeli soldiers gang-raping the Palestinian man.

Disney Argues Wrongful Death Suit Should Be Tossed Because Plaintiff Signed Up For A Disney+ Trial

Does signing up for Disney’s popular streaming service mean you have agreed to never sue the entertainment giant over anything forever?

That is what Disney argues in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a 42-year-old New York doctor whose family claims had a fatal allergic reaction after eating at an Irish pub in Disney Springs in October.

Disney is asking a Florida court to dismiss a lawsuit brought against it by Jeffrey Piccolo, the husband of Kanokporn Tangsuan, a family medicine specialist with NYU Langone’s office in Carle Place, on Long Island.

The company argues Piccolo had agreed to settle any lawsuits against Disney out of court through the arbitration process when he signed up for a one-month trial of Disney+ in 2019 and acknowledged that he had reviewed the fine print.

Government Okays Establishment of First New West Bank Settlement Since 2017

The municipal boundaries for the first West Bank settlement to be formally established by the government from scratch since 2017 are announced, allotting the new Nahal Heletz settlement some 148 acres of land southwest of Jerusalem next to Bethlehem.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who advanced the establishment of the settlement, says it will help connect Jerusalem to the Etzion settlement bloc, and says he will continue to “fight against” a Palestinian state by “establishing facts on the ground.”

“Connecting Gush Etzion and Jerusalem by establishing a new settlement is an historic moment,” says Smotrich.

“No anti-Israelism or anti-Zionism will stop the continued development of the settlements. We will continue to fight the dangerous idea of a Palestinian state, and establish facts on the ground. This is my life’s mission.”

The establishment of Nahal Heletz was formally approved by the government in June this year along with the retroactive legalization of four illegal outposts.

Zoning plans and construction permits will still need to be obtained before construction on the new settlement can begin, a process that typically takes several years.

Peace Now, which campaigns against the settlements, concurs with Smotrich that Nahal Heletz is deliberately designed to interrupt Palestinian territorial contiguity and constitutes another step in what it says is Israel’s “de facto annexation” of the West Bank.

Starmer’s Free Speech Flip-Flop: From Once Defending Offensive Speech To Now Jailing People For Tweets

In the past, UK’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer was among those expressing concern for free speech on the internet and how a law that results in fines and arrests because of social media posts could have “a chilling effect on free speech.”

Right now, his government is carrying out mass arrests of people who get convicted for precisely that reason: the things they’ve said on the internet.

But back in 2012 , speaking about the Communications Act 2003 and its section 127, Starmer was worried about the law resulting in “a lot of prosecutions” – even though his comments overall can hardly be interpreted as coming from a strong advocate for freedom of expression.

Referring to what is considered “grossly offensive messages” and criminalization of communications of that nature, Starmer wanted to see what he called a high threshold for people’s right to be offensive and insulting.

That, he said, needed to be protected. Otherwise, a large number of prosecutions would have “a chilling effect on free speech, and I think that’s a very important consideration,” Starmer told the BBC.

According to him, the criminal offense here was “overarching,” hence the fear that it would apply to the type of communications he mentioned, and if the only response was a criminal one, he warned, “there might be the temptation to resort too quickly to that response.”

Hamas Reaffirms That It Wants Ceasefire Deal Presented By Biden

Hamas says it won't attend new hostage deal talks, but an Arab official said Hamas is still willing to participate indirectly

On Wednesday, Hamas reiterated that it wants to implement a ceasefire proposal that was unveiled by President Biden in May instead of restarting hostage deal talks with Israel.

“The movement demands a clear commitment by the [Israeli] occupation to what was agreed upon on July 2, according to the clarifications conveyed by the mediators, and if that happens, the movement is ready to enter into the mechanisms for implementing the agreement,” Hamas politburo member Suhail al-Hindi told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed .

Al-Hindi also said Hamas would not participate in hostage deal talks that are set to be held in Doha on Thursday since the Palestinian group thinks Israel will use them as cover to continue the genocidal war in Gaza. However, an Arab official downplayed Hamas’s comments about boycotting the talks, saying the group is willing to meet with mediators right after the talks.

“The format will effectively be the same as previous rounds of negotiations,” an Arab official told The Times of Israel . The official said that since Israel and Hamas have refused to negotiate directly, Israeli and Hamas negotiators have never been in the same room during negotiations.

Officials from the US and Egypt will also be involved in the talks. Arab mediators recently said the only way a deal will be reached is if the US uses the significant leverage it has over Israel, which it hasn’t done. The US continues to provide unconditional military support for the slaughter in Gaza and is pledging to defend Israel as it is preparing for a reprisal attack from Iran.

EU Accuses Breton Of Going Rogue With Overreaching Censorship Threats

Brussels has criticized Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton for going rogue in his threats against Elon Musk, independently sending a contentious censorship threat letter to Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X.

The letter threatened consequences if the platform allowed content that could “seriously harm” EU citizens. This correspondence, unveiled just hours before Musk was scheduled to host a significant interview with US presidential candidate Donald Trump on the same platform, was reportedly dispatched without the endorsement of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen or other commissioners. The Commission stated that both “the timing and the wording of the letter were neither coordinated or agreed with the president nor with the [commissioners].”

Breton, acting without consultation, seems to embody the lone wolf approach within the pro-censorship EU framework, often adopting his own threatening distinctive strategies. As one EU official who preferred anonymity to the Financial Times expressed , “Thierry has his own mind and way of working and thinking.” This incident underscores the tension between regulatory enforcement and the autonomy of individual commissioners within the EU.

The Commission is actively examining the role of X, previously known as Twitter, under the stringent parameters of the 2022 censorship law, the Digital Services Act . This act was specifically designed to curb speech on vast social media networks. The ongoing probe focuses on the propagation of illegal content and the manipulation of information on the platform, with the Commission noting, “The [investigation] on dissemination of illegal content and information manipulation is ongoing, we are looking into it, and of course, everything that happens on the platform feeds into this assessment.”

Breton’s decision to issue the letter, which coincided with Musk’s interview with Trump, was described by aides as a calculated “trigger point.” As the designated overseer of the Digital Services Act’s enforcement, Breton felt compelled to remind Musk of this looming threat. He stressed the importance of such measures against “recent examples of public unrest brought about by the amplification of content that promotes hatred, disorder, incitement to violence, or certain instances of disinformation.”

US Says It’s Not Discussing Withdrawing From Iraq

The State Department says recent talks with the Iraqi government are about transitioning to a 'bilateral security partnership'

The State Department on Wednesday said that at “no point” in recent talks with the Iraqi government has the US discussed the idea of withdrawing troops from Iraq.

The comments came in response to questions about reports saying that the US was planning to withdraw. Tasnim , an Iranian news agency, reported this week that the US and Iraq would announce plans for a withdrawal next month.

State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said that the talks with the Iraqi government had been focused on transitioning US involvement in Iraq from an international coalition to a “bilateral security partnership,” which would mean an open-ended US military presence.

“At no point did we discuss the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, but we continued to discuss the transition to a – what we would say a bilateral security partnership,” Patel said.

There are currently about 2,500 US troops in Iraq as part of the US-led anti-ISIS coalition, known as Operation Inherent Resolve. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani began calling for the withdrawal of the coalition at the end of 2023 after the US began launching airstrikes against the PMF, a group of mainly Shia militias that are part of Iraq’s security forces. Al-Sudani has said that Iraqi troops could handle ISIS remnants without the foreign coalition.
