Documents Confirm Israeli PM Responsible For Obstructing Gaza Ceasefire: Report

Benjamin Netanyahu remains insistent that any deal must allow Israel to continue the war against Hamas after captives are exchanged

Documents cited by the New York Times (NYT) on 13 August confirm that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has added new conditions to Israel’s demands in ceasefire talks, which threaten to further upend the negotiations.

The unpublished documents show that Israel “relayed a list of new stipulations in late July to American, Egyptian, and Qatari mediators that added less flexible conditions to a set of principles it had made in late May,” NYT reported.

It added that the documents “make clear that the behind-the-scenes maneuvering by the Netanyahu government has been extensive.”

Israel’s amendments to the May proposal, given to mediators ahead of a Rome meeting late last month, stipulated that its troops must remain in control of the southern Gaza border, including the Rafah crossing and the vital Philadelphi Corridor.

It also included restrictions on the return of displaced Palestinians to the north of the strip.

US Court Reimposes “Disinformation” Device Monitoring On January 6 Defendant

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has issued an order in the United States v. Daniel Goodwyn case reimposing the computer monitoring measure against Goodwyn, a January 6 defendant.

We obtained a copy of the order for you here.

Goodwyn was charged and convicted for briefly entering the US Capitol during the January 6 events, and although he stayed inside the building for just over half a minute, left when he was asked to, was not involved in violence nor did he cause any damage – it was his social media posts (among others, screenshot of public documents that show names of government employees) that were seen as a threat.

In initial proceedings in 2023, Goodwyn pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of trespassing. As legal experts noted, normally a first-time offender isn’t sent to jail for this, but the US District Court for the District of Columbia Judge Reggie Walton sentenced him to two months in prison.

This was accompanied by probation conditions that included unusually harsh and ongoing restrictions on Goodwyn’s online speech and access to information. Walton – a vocal critic of Donald Trump decided that Goodwyn’s computer must be “monitored and inspected” to make sure he was not “spreading disinformation.”

The appellate court then found that the district court “plainly erred” by imposing these surveillance measures. Judge Walton next decided that now, “on the heels of [sic] another election,” he was worried Goodwyn was spreading “false narratives” and therefore affirmed his original sentencing.

Vice President Kamala Harris' team declined an interview with Time as it continued to deny media access, according to the magazine's glowing cover story about her rise to the top of the Democratic ticket.

Harris has gone 22 days as of Monday without holding a formal press conference or sit-down interview since emerging as the Democratic Party's nominee after President Biden announced he had dropped out of the race. Both Biden and former President Trump sat down for lengthy interviews with TIME as candidates for president.

About four months after a notorious hacking group claimed to have stolen an extraordinary amount of sensitive personal information from a major data broker, a member of the group has reportedly released most of it for free on an online marketplace for stolen personal data.

The breach, which includes Social Security numbers and other sensitive data, could power a raft of identity theft, fraud and other crimes, said Teresa Murray, consumer watchdog director for the U.S. Public Information Research Group.

“If this in fact is pretty much the whole dossier on all of us, it certainly is much more concerning” than prior breaches, Murray said in an interview. “And if people weren’t taking precautions in the past, which they should have been doing, this should be a five-alarm wake-up call for them.”

According to a class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the hacking group USDoD claimed in April to have stolen personal records of 2.9 billion people from National Public Data, which offers personal information to employers, private investigators, staffing agencies and others doing background checks. The group offered in a forum for hackers to sell the data, which included records from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, for $3.5 million , a cybersecurity expert said in a post on X.

The lawsuit was reported by Bloomberg Law.

Haaretz Investigation: Israeli Army Uses Palestinian Civilians to Inspect Potentially Booby-Trapped Tunnels in Gaza

At first, it's hard to recognize them. They're usually wearing Israeli army uniforms, many of them are in their 20s, and they're always with Israeli soldiers of various ranks

But if you look more closely, you see that most of them are wearing sneakers, not army boots. And their hands are cuffed behind their backs and their faces are full of fear

The soldiers call each of them a shawish, an obscure Arabic word of Turkish origin meaning sergeant. Random Palestinians have been used by Israeli army units in Gaza for one purpose: to serve as human shields for soldiers during operations

"Our lives are more important than their lives," soldiers were told. The thinking is that it's better for the Israeli soldiers to remain alive and for the shawishim to be the ones blown up by an explosive device

This description is one of many obtained by Haaretz, some from combat soldiers, others from commanders. The picture that emerges: In recent months, Israeli soldiers used human shields in this way all over Gaza; even the chief of staff's office knows

In an interview with The Guardian, Yair Golan, who heads Israel's new center-left party The Democrats, expressed support for a two-state solution, but stressed that the process may take years. 'Right now, we are a nation in trauma. People lost their sense of security'

Yair Golan, Israel's former IDF Deputy Chief of Staff and the founder of The Democrats, the new left-wing merge between the Labor and Meretz parties, told The Guardian that he is "not sure Israel is a democratic state anymore."

Commenting on the militant sentiment prevalent in Israel, especially after the Hamas attacks of October 7, Golan told the Guardian that right-wing voters believe Israel can annex millions of Palestinians and "Should adopt some sort of policy of revenge" without aspiring for a potential reconciliation. "I think 180 degrees the opposite," Golan stressed.

"Our vision is a two-state solution," he said, elaborating on his new role as leader of The Democrats . "But right now, we are a nation in trauma. People lost their sense of security."

According to Golan, Israel must maintain freedom of action in the Gaza Strip and across the West Bank for the near future, all while forming so-called islands of stability and an alternative to Hamas that would be established through a joint effort by the United States and moderate Arab nations. This alternative, Golan added, should be based on the Palestinian Authority.

Golan claims that Israel should be "proactive militarily," but it also must have a political vision. This process may take years, he says. He stressed that the challenges facing Israel require it to work closely with its allies and not jeopardize relations with them. "We need the rest of the world with us," he said.

Israeli Troops Accused Of Gang Raping Palestinian Detainee Released On House Arrest

The Israeli military's investigation of soldiers who sodomized a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp is meant to protect Israel from prosecution by international tribunals

The Israeli military attorney’s office and defense lawyers agreed on the release to house arrest of the five soldiers accused of raping a Palestinian man in the notorious Sde Teiman detention camp, Haaretz reported on 13 August.

The Israeli army spokesman said the five soldiers will be released to house arrest for 10 days and that during this period, they will be referred to a review by the Probation Service.

At the end of the investigation next week, a hearing procedure will be held for the suspects, similar to the one conducted before the filing of an indictment.

The lawyers from the military defense argued that house arrest was appropriate for the soldiers because of the time it would take to review the case and because the soldiers do not pose a threat to the public.

On 8 August, a leaked surveillance video from Sde Teiman was broadcast on Israeli news network Channel 12, showing the Israeli soldiers gang-raping the Palestinian man.

Disney Argues Wrongful Death Suit Should Be Tossed Because Plaintiff Signed Up For A Disney+ Trial

Does signing up for Disney’s popular streaming service mean you have agreed to never sue the entertainment giant over anything forever?

That is what Disney argues in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a 42-year-old New York doctor whose family claims had a fatal allergic reaction after eating at an Irish pub in Disney Springs in October.

Disney is asking a Florida court to dismiss a lawsuit brought against it by Jeffrey Piccolo, the husband of Kanokporn Tangsuan, a family medicine specialist with NYU Langone’s office in Carle Place, on Long Island.

The company argues Piccolo had agreed to settle any lawsuits against Disney out of court through the arbitration process when he signed up for a one-month trial of Disney+ in 2019 and acknowledged that he had reviewed the fine print.
