Walid Jumblatt: Key Lebanese Politico Switches Sides As War Looms

Druze ‘kingmaker’ Walid Jumblatt has made yet another strategic turn in his long history of shifting alliances, throwing his considerable political weight – and that of Lebanon’s Druze community – behind Hezbollah as war with Israel heats up.

Walid Jumblatt, the former leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, is a unique figure in Lebanese politics. Known for his ability to deftly maneuver Lebanon’s sectarian political divide, Jumblatt frequently shifts his alliances to protect his interests and those of his Druze community.

Jumblatt’s astute political intuition, which has him often described as Lebanon’s “weather vane,” has helped the Druze leader decide when to align with or distance himself from various political factions. His relationship with external powers – he is viewed as a close ally of the US – has also fluctuated over the decades.

In recent years, Jumblatt, aged 74, has tended to step away from the spotlight, once even expressing a desire to work as a New York City garbageman rather than continue to deal with Lebanon’s never-ending political turmoil.

Today, however, he has stepped directly back into the ring and emerged as a key player alongside Hezbollah in opposition to Israel’s regional aggressions. It is not a position that will fare well with his traditional allies in Washington, London, and Paris.

Supporting the resistance

"Yes, I support the Lebanese resistance or the Islamic Resistance and Hezbollah."

So said Jumblatt during a phoned-in interview on Sky News Arabia in response to Israel’s deadly shelling of Beirut’s southern suburbs on 30 July.

The bombing took place in the direct aftermath of an incident in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights town of Majd Shams, in which 12 civilians – including 10 children – were killed. Tel Aviv immediately blamed a Hezbollah rocket for the deaths, while residents – mainly Syrian Druze – said the casualties were caused by shrapnel from an Israeli Iron Dome missile falling onto a football field.

On 19 July, Jumblatt even sent a letter to senior Druze Sheikh Muwaffaq Tarif in occupied Palestine, shaming him for receiving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the aftermath of Majd al-Shams, and warned that Israel was attempting to create rifts between the Druze and Shia communities.

During his meeting with Netanyahu, Tarif talked about the Druze listed in the Israeli army as brave men who fought against “terrorists” in Gaza and “defended the settlements surrounding the Gaza Strip,” blaming Netanyahu for abandoning the Druze villages in the north. Tarif had also defended Israel after the Majdal Shams incident, saying that “no state can tolerate the ongoing aggression to its citizens and residents. This has been the ongoing reality for the past nine months in the northern settlements. Tonight, every possible red line was crossed.” This statement sparked a wave of anger against Tarif...

...Tel Aviv used its version of the story as a pretext to launch a strike on Beirut, killing top Hezbollah war commander Fuad Shukr and six others, including three women and two children, and leaving over 80 civilians injured.

Jumblatt weighed in on the escalatory strike, saying that Tel Aviv’s claims and justification for its attack on Beirut were false, noting that “it is time for Israel to understand that they will not be able to eliminate the spirit of resistance.”

US Troops Return To Oil-rich Kirkuk Despite Talks To Withdraw From Iraq

The US claims it must remain in Iraq to counter ISIS

Troops from the US-led international coalition have returned to the K-1 military base in the oil-rich Iraqi city of Kirkuk for the first time since 2020, The New Arab (TNA) reported on 6 August.

An informed Kurdish source told TNA, “The force, comprising about 40 soldiers and 10 to 15 US-made armored Hummer vehicles, was sent from Erbil and deployed at the K-1 military base.”

The US-led coalition did not respond to requests for comment.

The reason for the new US deployment of troops to Kirkuk after four years is unclear.

The source suggested that it may be a response to increased ISIS activities in the disputed province, which leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) have long wished to annex to the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq (IKR).

Louisiana’s New Law Sparks First Amendment Showdown

Under Louisiana’s new, recently enacted law (HB 173) , journalists and other citizens are limited in their right to film the police.

Anyone who finds themselves within 25 feet of an on-duty officer doing that – after being warned to stop or retreat – could face misdemeanor charges.

Now a group of Louisiana-based media companies is challenging the new legislation by suing the state – Attorney General Liz Murrill and two other officials – on First Amendment grounds, seeking an injunction.

The plaintiffs behind the Deep South Today v. Murrill case, brought before the US District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana, go into the importance of the media being able to cover police activity to ensure public scrutiny and avoid miscarriage of justice.

HB 173, the filing continues, “has grave implications for the ability of reporters and news organizations, including plaintiffs, to exercise their First Amendment rights.”

Although the lawsuit does not specifically mention the consequence the law could have on speech online, given that a majority of videos showing police at work get posted on the internet, the restrictions imposed by the act could also have indirect implications for that form of freedom of expression.

London’s Metropolitan Police chief warned that officials will not only be cracking down on British citizens for commentary on the riots in the UK, but on American citizens as well.

“We will throw the full force of the law at people. And whether you’re in this country committing crimes on the streets or committing crimes from further afield online, we will come after you,” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley told Sky News.

Riots have broken out across the United Kingdom in recent days over false rumors spread online that an asylum seeker was responsible for a mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event that left three girls dead and others wounded.

The murders, allegedly committed by a now 18-year-old British citizen born to Rwandan parents, sparked a series of violent protests that tapped into broader concerns about the scale of immigration in the U.K.

Footage of the violent clashes involving anti-immigration protesters and the groups of counter-protesters, some of whom have been seen waving Palestinian flags, has gone viral on social media, and the government is warning that sharing such content may have serious consequences.

Israeli Strike On Gaza School Kills 100 People During Dawn Prayers

Videos obtained by MEE showed scores of bodies strewn across the floor of the Tabin school in Gaza City after it was targeted in an early morning strike

At least 100 Palestinian civilians, including women and children, were killed at dawn on Saturday after Israeli forces targeted a school in Gaza City whilst displaced people performed morning prayers.

Another video appeared to show dozens of bodies covered in cloths and laid out in a courtyard.

The victims of the attack were taken to the partially functioning Maamadani hospital, one of the few operating hospitals in north Gaza.

Moatasem Dalloul, an activist and resident of Gaza City, told Middle East Eye that the hospital does not have enough beds for the wounded and many are being kept in the hallways.

“Israel keeps targeting shelters, but people continue to shelter in these places because their homes have been destroyed in repeated Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip.”

aza's civil defence agency described the attacks as a “horrific massacre” and said three Israeli rockets struck the Tabin school, located in Gaza City's al-Daraj district, whilst Palestinians performed early morning Fajr prayers.

A man at the scene of the massacre, who did not give his name, told MEE: “When we entered the school, we saw body parts all over the prayer hall.”

“The Israeli occupation forces continue to commit massacres against displaced people in shelters because no one in the world is able to stop it,” Dalloul said.

“The ongoing American and western support, financially and militarily, and the silence of the international community encourage Israel to continue committing such crimes against the innocents in the Gaza Strip.”

'Two thousand-pound missile'
Mohammed al-Mughair, director of the supply department of Gaza's civil defence authority, said the Tabin School was housing around 2,400 displaced Palestinians.

“The school was targetted by three missiles, including at least one MK-84 missile, which weighs 2,000 pounds,” Mughair said.

The civil defence said the rockets targeted two floors of the school, with the first striking an area inhabited by displaced women, and the second hitting the ground floor area that was used as a prayer hall.

“The occupation army directly bombed the displaced people while they were performing the dawn prayer,” Gaza's government media office said in a statement.

“Due to the horror of the massacre and the large number of martyrs, medical teams, civil defence, and relief and emergency teams have not been able to recover the bodies of all the martyrs so far,” it added.

US To Release $3.5 Billion In Military Assistance For Israel

The State Department is set to approve the Foreign Military Financing as it is calling on Israel to investigate soldiers accused of brutally raping a Palestinian.

The State Department is set to release $ 3.5 billion in Foreign Military Financing to Israel. The massive transfer of funds comes as the White House is asking Israel to investigate claims of rape in its detention centers for Palestinians.

CNN reported speaking with multiple officials who confirmed the funds will be released. The money was allocated by Congress in the $95 billion foreign military aid bill that included $61 billion for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel.

Foreign Military Financing (FMF) is a State Department program that gives US taxpayer dollars to foreign governments to purchase weapons from American arms dealers. However, Tel Aviv is allowed to use some of the FMF funds on Israeli-made weapons.

As the funds are used to contract with arms deals, the weapons are typically not delivered immediately.

Israel is heavily dependent on the US to arm its military, giving Washington significant leverage over Tel Aviv. Over the ten-month Israeli onslaught in Gaza, the White House has resisted domestic pressure to condition arm sales to Israel.
