Israel Considering ‘Preemptive Strike’ Against Iran

Netanyahu discussed the idea in a meeting with his top officials on Sunday

Israel is considering launching a “preemptive strike” on Iran as it’s awaiting a reprisal attack for the assassination of Hamas’s political chief in Iran.

According to Israeli media reports, Israel could launch an attack on Iran if it finds an Iranian strike is imminent. The idea was discussed on Sunday night in a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his top military and intelligence officials.

Iranian officials have made clear they will respond to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh on Iranian soil, and any Israeli preemptive strike would just escalate the situation even more.

US and Israeli officials believe an Iranian attack could happen any day , and it’s expected that Hezbollah will be involved in the operation as the Lebanese group vowed a response to an Israeli strike that killed one of its top commanders in Beirut. Iran’s allies in Iraq and the Houthis in Yemen could also join the attack on Israel.

The US has deployed additional warships and warplanes to the Middle East for the purpose of “defending Israel,” making US military assets potential targets in a reprisal attack.

Majority Of Americans Oppose Using US Troops To Defend Israel

The Biden administration has committed to defending Israel from an expected Iranian reprisal attack

The majority of Americans oppose the idea of US troops being used to defend Israel if it comes under attack by Iran, according to a poll conducted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs that was released on Tuesday.

The poll, conducted from June 21–July 1, 2024, found that 56% of Americans oppose US troops defending Israel, while 42% support the idea. Support for defending Israel is stronger among Republicans, with 53% in favor and only 32% of Democrats in favor.

The survey also found that 55% of Americans oppose US troops defending Israel if it comes under attack by a neighboring country.

The results come as the Biden administration is vowing to defend Israel from an expected Iranian reprisal attack for the killing of Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran. A major coordinated attack launched by Iran and its allies could result in American casualties, and the US support for Israel risks a major regional war.

The US defended Israel from an Iranian attack in April, which came in response to the Israeli bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. The Biden administration intervened directly to protect Israel and is pledging to do so again without any authorization from Congress or any debate on the matter.

🚨Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Quits, Army Takes Over Amid Massive Protests

Sheikh Hasina has quit as Bangladesh Prime Minister and the Army has taken control amid violent protests demanding her exit. Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman told the media that the Army will form an interim government and has appealed to the protesters to return to the path of peace.

"There is a crisis in the country. I have met Opposition leaders and we have decided to form an interim government to run this country. I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property. Your demands will be fulfilled. Please support us and stop violence. If you work with us, we can move towards a proper solution. We cannot achieve anything through violence," he said. The Army chief also confirmed that Ms Hasina has stepped down.

The Army General said leaders of Opposition parties and civil society were present at today's meeting, and clarified that nobody from the ruling Awami League attended it.

Ms Hasina, who started her fifth term as Prime Minister earlier this year, left state capital Dhaka in a military aircraft for India.

The 76-year-old is accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana. Protesters demanding her resignation have, meanwhile, stormed Gono Bhaban, the Prime Minister's official residence, local media reports have said. The Bangladesh Army, it is learnt, had given a 45-minute ultimatum to the Prime Minister to step down.

Report: Putin Asks Iran To Avoid Civilian Casualties In Reprisal Attack On Israel

Reports also say Russia is shipping air defenses to Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to avoid civilian casualties in Iran’s expected reprisal attack on Israel for the killing of Hamas’s political chief in Tehran, Reuters reported on Tuesday , citing two unnamed Iranian sources.

The sources said the message was delivered by Sergey Shoigu, head of the Russian Security Council and former defense minister. Shoigu was in Tehran on Monday and met with President President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The New York Times reported that Iran had requested air defenses from Russia in the meeting as it prepares for a potential war with Israel and the US and that Moscow had already begun delivering radars and air defense equipment.

Russia and Iran have increased military ties in recent years as a result of both countries facing heavy US sanctions, but so far, neither country has confirmed that Russia is delivering new equipment.

Brig. Gen. Alireza Elhami, the deputy commander of Iran’s air defense forces, said that the Iranian military was in the process of upgrading its air defense systems but added that Tehran is not relying on any foreign country.

❗Earlier today, the Israeli military spokesman issued a forced evacuation order for residents of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza, threatening the lives of nearly 200,000 Palestinians sheltering there.

US Warns Turkiye Of ‘Consequences’ Over Military Trade With Russia

Washington has repeatedly warned its NATO ally over its increasing cooperation and coordination with Moscow

Washington has warned Ankara that it will face “consequences” if it does not restrict its exports of US military hardware to Russia.

The US assistant commerce secretary, Matthew Axelrod, met recently with officials in Turkiye to discuss efforts to halt Ankara’s “illicit trade” with Moscow, the Financial Times (FT) reported on 7 August.

He warned Turkiye that it must work harder to prevent the flow of microchips and any parts to Russia that could be used in the war in Ukraine.

“We need Turkey to help us stop the illicit flow of US technology to Russia. We need to see progress, and quickly, by Turkish authorities and industry or we will have no choice but to impose consequences on those that evade our export controls,” Axelrod told FT.

Internet Blackouts Backfire As Protests Escalate In Bangladesh

The tried-and-tested method of controlling protests – various forms of internet blackouts imposed by governments – seems to have failed in Bangladesh, as reports on Monday say that PM Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country.

But before that happened, Bangladesh was thrown into waves of turmoil when initially peaceful student protests against the High Court reintroducing a government job quota system turned deadly, claiming more than 100 lives.

On Sunday, before her reported resignation after 15 years in power, PM Hasina’s government ordered mobile internet to be shut down again as part of the measures meant to stop the protests and clashes. Other measures included a nationwide curfew and the closing of banks and other private and government offices.

The internet shutdown announced on Sunday was the second in three weeks, reports said, noting the high economic cost of this decision, as well as curfews – currently estimated at $10 billion.

The news about renewed mobile internet blackouts came from mobile phone operators, who said they were ordered to shut down 4G services. Also on Sunday, Facebook appeared to be blocked for some users.

Ahead of the students’ march announced last Friday, the government asked that Facebook and its Messenger be blocked by operators, but according to reports, this was not limited only to these platforms.

US To Let Israel Restart Military Operations In Gaza After First Phase Of Ceasefire Deal

Ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas have been stalled since Israel killed Ismail Haniyeh

The US is ready to guarantee that it would allow Israel to restart the genocidal war in Gaza after the first phase of any hostage and ceasefire deal that might be reached with Hamas, according to Israeli media reports.

Hostage deal talks have been stalled since the Israeli killing of Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, and it’s unclear when they will resume, but the US and Israel have been discussing potential proposals.

According to The Times of Israel , a proposal that’s been discussed would involve three phases where Israel would halt its military operations and Hamas would release hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants a guarantee that he’ll be able to restart military operations after the first phase, which is when negotiations will be held on implementing the next two phases.

The US has not yet provided a written agreement that it would allow Israel to restart operations but has expressed its approval of the idea. Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the US wouldn’t give the guarantee in writing until an agreement is reached with Hamas.

The Israeli condition could make Hamas less likely to agree to a deal since one of its main demands has been a permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. During previous negotiations, Hamas had agreed to language that was vague enough that Israel could accept without actually committing to a permanent ceasefire. But it’s unclear if Hamas would agree to a deal where Israel gets an explicit guarantee from the US that it could restart military operations.

‘We’ll Die Before Enlisting’: Ultra-Orthodox Israelis Storm Army Base

The Haredi community's call for ultra-Orthodox Israelis to dodge draft orders has hampered Tel Aviv's enlistment efforts

Israel released a statement on 6 August condemning the storming of a military base that day by ultra-Orthodox Jews, also known as the Haredim, who were protesting a recent government decision to enlist them into the Israeli army.

“Breaking into IDF bases is a grave offensive and against the law,” the Israeli army said, adding that the enlistment of Haredi Jews into the military is “a critical operational need… and we are determined to continue advancing it.”

Demonstrators from the ultra-Orthodox community stormed the Tel HaShome army base in Israel earlier on 6 August during a demonstration against compulsory conscription into the Israeli military.

Israel’s Channel 12 News described the situation as “out of control,” with rioters outnumbering security forces and dozens breaking into the base.

Video footage on social media shows the Haredim pouring through the gates of the military base on Tuesday.
