US Sending Aircraft Carrier, Fighter Jet Squadron To ‘Defend Israel’

The White House claims the deployments are meant to ease tensions but US military support has only emboldened Israel to escalate

The US is sending more warships and additional fighter jets to the Middle East as part of a deployment that’s “entirely focused on defending Israel,” a White House official said Sunday.

The Pentagon announced Friday that it’s sending the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which has been operating in the Middle East. The US is also sending additional US Navy cruisers and destroyers and bolstering its land-based missile defense systems in the region.

A Pentagon official told Air & Space Forces Magazine that a US Air Force squadron of F-22 Raptor fighters jets is also headed to the region.

The US and Israel are expecting a major attack from Iran and its allies in response to the Israeli killing of Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran and a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut.

White House Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer claimed the purpose of the new military deployments was to reduce tensions in the region even though US military support has only emboldened Israel to escalate.

CENTCOM Chief in Israel for ‘Preparations’ Against Iran, Hezbollah

Additional US fighter jets, warships, and cruisers have been mobilized in defense of Israel

The US CENTCOM chief arrived in Israel on 3 August to help Tel Aviv prepare for an Iranian retaliation to the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh on its soil last week, as well as Hezbollah’s response to the strike on Beirut hours before.

General Michael Kurilla arrived in Israel on Saturday “as preparations continue for a possible attack against Israel from Iran [and Hezbollah] in retaliation for the assassinations of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders,” two US officials told Axios on 4 August.

Kurilla had already been planning a trip to Israel prior to the serious escalation, which saw Tel Aviv attack Beirut and Tehran within hours of each other.

He is expected to use the trip to try to mobilize the same international and regional coalition that defended Israel against an attack from Iran on Apr. 13,” an official told Axios. At the time, Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel in response to the destruction of its consulate in Damascus and the killing of several Iranian officials.

Three US officials told the outlet they expect an Iranian retaliation to Haniyeh’s killing “as early as Monday.

Egypt Says It Will Not Assist Israel in Repelling Iranian Attack — ReportTimes of Israel

Egypt informed the high-level Israeli delegation that visited Cairo on Saturday for indirect talks with American and Egyptian negotiators that it will not be part of a regional military coalition to repel a potential Iranian retaliatory attack against Israel, the Qatari-owned news outlet al-Araby al-Jadeed reports.

In April, a massive drone and missile attack from Iran was foiled by a coalition that comprised Israel, the United States, Britain, France, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

In an effort to maintain its neutrality and de-escalate tensions in the region sparked by the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, Egypt also notified Tehran that it will close its airspace to any military action that would threaten regional security, the Qatari outlet writes.

Cairo officials tell their Iranian counterparts that the measure should not be perceived as hostile behavior toward Iran, but rather as a way to safeguard Egypt’s interests and sovereignty, the newspaper adds.

Netanyahu Appoints New Spokesman Who Wants Ethnic Cleansing of Gaza

Omer Dostri has called for settlements to be established in areas of Gaza that are under Israel's control

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed a new spokesman who is a proponent of establishing Jewish settlements in Gaza and expelling Palestinians from the territory, Haaretz has reported.

Omer Dostri, who is a regular guest on Israel’s Channel 14 , was appointed to the new role on Sunday. He is aligned with the Israeli right and has a history of calling for policies that would result in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza.

There is no victory over Hamas without three basic conditions: military occupation of the entire Gaza Strip, military and civilian control of the area, and encouragement of voluntary migration of Gazans out of the strip,” Dostri said in January.

While framing the idea of expelling Palestinians as “voluntary migration,” the Israeli military campaign is making Gaza uninhabitable and could give Palestinians no choice but to leave if they have the option. Dostri has suggested Egypt should be offered economic or military aid to agree to the transfer of “Gaza refugees to Sinai, even if only temporarily.

Dostri has also called for Israel to establish settlements in the areas of Gaza that it currently occupies. “Israel must order the rapid establishment of Israeli settlements in many of the areas it occupies, especially those close to the current border,” Dostri wrote in Makor Rishon .

Was October 7th Allowed to Happen To Further The Greater Israel Agenda? Did The Hannibal Directive Ever End? [X] — Part 4 of TheMcgwire's Oct 7th Series
...Since I published part 3 of this series on December 3rd, my central thesis points developed have been further substantiated.

...My thesis was that Israeli leadership had existing motivations to allow Oct 7th to happen and purposely fail to act on intelligence indicating an attack was to occur, and that leadership indeed do just that. The motivation for allowing Hamas’s attack to take place was the pretext for retaliation, in the form of depopulating Gaza and paving the way for expanding Israel’s territory and establishing Jewish settlements in Gaza - in line with the Greater Israel agenda.

In this piece I aim to compile important developments along the lines of my already-developed thesis points

Argentina’s AI and the Rise of Pre-Crime Digital Surveillance

Argentina’s new initiative to launch the Applied Artificial Intelligence for Security Unit (UIAAS) represents a concerning step toward a surveillance-heavy approach to tackling crime. Under the guise of innovation, this unit, embedded within the Ministry of Security, integrates artificial intelligence to not only sift through vast amounts of historical crime data but also to monitor social media activities ostensibly to predict and preempt criminal behavior.

This approach raises significant ethical questions, especially regarding privacy and civil liberties. The idea that AI can predict future crimes based on patterns might sound efficient, but it harbors risks of overreach, profiling, and potentially unjustified surveillance. The emphasis on monitoring social media activities and detecting “potential threats” could easily slide into invasive scrutiny of everyday citizens’ lives under a loosely defined mandate.

Critics have voiced many concerns. Their skepticism highlights a broader apprehension about the trade-offs between using AI in law enforcement and the erosion of personal freedoms. The capacity for AI to be misused under the pretext of security could set a dangerous precedent, potentially leading to a dystopian reality where personal spaces and freedoms are heavily compromised by state surveillance.

Argentina’s pioneering step, therefore, should be viewed critically, demanding rigorous scrutiny and debate to ensure that the pursuit of security does not trample the very liberties it aims to protect. The line between safeguarding citizens and surveilling them must be navigated with caution to prevent an unsettling shift towards an AI-driven surveillance state.

A glimpse of a proposed future.

Examining the bias.

UNIFIL Unable to 'Attribute Responsibility' for Majdal Shams Massacre

The UN mission to Lebanon has debunked claims by Israeli and Gulf media that Hezbollah was 'found responsible' for the deadly incident

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) says they are “not in a position” to determine who was behind the deadly attack that left 12 civilians dead in the village of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on 27 July.

UNIFIL is not in the position to attribute the responsibility of (sic) the tragic incident in Majdal Shams. The village of Majdal Shams is outside the area of operations of UNIFI,” Spokesman Andrea Tenenti said when contacted by The Cradle on 2 August.

The statement refutes earlier reports by Gulf and Israeli media that claimed UNIFIL “found Hezbollah to be responsible” for the deadly attack.

Hezbollah vehemently denied any involvement in the incident. “We have enough courage to admit if [the Majdal Shams incident] was our mistake,” Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah said during a speech on Thursday, adding that Tel Aviv “refuses to accept that what happened in Majdal Shams would be caused by an Israeli interceptor missile.

Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari claimed on Sunday morning that “the rocket which was fired at Majdal Shams was a Falaq-1 rocket of Iranian production whose warhead carried over 50 kilos of explosives,” and even named the Hezbollah commander who guided the fire as “Ali Muhammad Yahya.

House Probes Major Businesses for Censorship Collusion With GARM’s Alleged Ad “Cartel”

US House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan on August 1 requested documents from more than 40 companies that are members of the controversial, powerful advertising initiative, the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM).

The Committee has long had GARM (set up by the World Federation of Advertisers, WFA) in its sights in the context of a broader investigation into the government colluding with tech companies, but also other corporations, to censor online speech.

In this case, GARM is suspected of getting the world’s biggest brands to effectively demonetize, by withholding ads, various platforms, podcasts, news sites, “and other content that GARM and its members deem disfavored,” Committee Chairman Jim Jordan writes in his letter sent to dozens of GARM members.

We obtained a copy of the letters for you here.

GARM’s official purpose is to provide brand safety to its clients (and theirs amounts to some 90% of marketing spending globally) – but Jordan says that this WFA initiative ( with ties to the World Economic Forum , WEF) has significantly deviated from that goal.

Instead, it has “collectively used its immense market power to demonetize voices and viewpoints the group disagrees with – even intervening in situations that do not have a so-called ‘brand safety’ concern,” Jordan writes.

Among those who received the letter are Electronic Arts, Red Bull, McDonalds, General Motors, Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, Verizon, Volvo, American Express, Chanel, CVS, Pepsi, Adidas, Nike, IKEA, Sony, Shell – and that’s just a third of the corporations listed, but it gives a clear idea of the power GARM, as their “brand safety umbrella,” has to make or break any entity “disfavored” for their speech.

Jordan informed these corporations that the committee he chairs “has learned that collusive activity is occurring within the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, of which your company is a member.”

That activity included boycotting sites, podcasts, etc., that GARM decided should be excluded from the members’ marketing spending. Among those that were allegedly targeted in this way are conservative media outlets like Daily Wire and Fox News, but also Joe Rogan’s podcast.

Biden Meets National Security Chiefs as Mideast War Fears Grow

US President Joe Biden held crisis talks with his national security team on Monday as fears grew that an Iranian counterattack on Israel could spark an all-out war in the Middle East.

Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken engaged in frantic diplomacy to try to ease tensions sparked by a suspected Israeli attack that killed Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran...

Earlier, Biden called King Abdullah II of Jordan while Blinken called the prime minister of Qatar and foreign minister of Egypt, the two key players in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas....

Biden and the Jordanian king meanwhile "discussed their efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, including through an immediate ceasefire and hostage release deal," the White House said in a readout of the call.

Hopes of a ceasefire between key US ally Israel and Hamas in Gaza have suffered a major blow with the assassination of Haniyeh and the killing of Hezbollah military chief Fuad Shukr in Beirut hours earlier.

- 'Maximum restraint' -

The United States has deployed extra fighter jets and warplanes to the region to support Israel, as reports suggested Iran could respond militarily as soon as Monday.

...Blinken also emphasized the need to calm regional tensions in a call with Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani of Iraq, where some Iran-aligned groups targeted US troops earlier in the Gaza war, the State Department said...

But the turmoil has deepened as... Netanyahu and Biden are increasingly at odds, despite a meeting at the White House less than two weeks ago.

Biden has backed Israel since Hamas's October 7 attacks on Israel.

But Biden said on Thursday that he had a "very direct" call with Netanyahu urging him to reach a ceasefire deal, adding
that the assassination of Haniyeh had "not helped" tensions.

The conversation became heated, with Netanyahu pushing back against suggestions that he was deliberately trying to sabotage efforts to reach a ceasefire and hostage release deal, The New York Times and Axios said.

FBI To Resume Meetings With Social Media Companies, Ignoring Censorship Concerns

Here we go again – another US election is coming up, and there’s another push to find ways to censor “disfavored” voices, and one of those ways is the focus on the foreign malign influence (FMI) boogeyman.

Americans (and the world) have seen this play out already before and after the contested 2020 vote.

The infamous case of the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop news story came after the FBI issued a warning to social media companies about an incoming FMI “ disinformation dump ” – from Russia.

We know how that went and was eventually debunked, the laptop being authentic, rather than a figment of some “disinformation” peddling operation’s imagination. But here is the FBI again, more than just emboldened by the recent Supreme Court’s ruling in the Murthy v. Missouri case.

That decision lifted an injunction that banned the US government from colluding with Big Tech in order to promote censorship. Now the case is back in the lower courts, and in the meanwhile, mere months before the election, the legal hurdle to resume suspected collusion has been cleared.

And so the FBI will now “resume regular meetings” with social media companies, the pretext being finding ways to combat “potential” FMI threats. The Hunter Biden laptop scandal illustrates very well how the supposed hunt for FMI can go astray, straight into the political censorship territory.

How Western Big Tech Giants Enable Israel's Occupation By Kit Klarenberg [7/20]

Hewlett Packard, Motorola, and other western tech conglomerates have been deeply involved in providing the technological infrastructure that supports Israeli apartheid and settler colonialism. This is how they profit from the oppression of Palestinians.

This investigation is the second in a series that examines illegal investments by western corporations in the occupied Palestinian territories. The first investigation can be found here.

On 10 July, Hebrew newspaper Maariv reported that 46,000 Israeli businesses have been forced to shut down due to the ongoing Gaza war and its devastating effect on the economy. The outlet referred to Israel as a “country in collapse.

Regular readers of The Cradle will be well aware of the scale of the occupation state’s economic collapse since the Gaza genocide began. Yet, its effect on the precipitous decline of Tel Aviv’s once-thriving tech sector remains underexplored.

Complicity in occupation infrastructure

In mid-June, mainstream news outlets reported that chip giant Intel was halting expansion of a major factory project in Israel, which was slated to pump an extra $15 billion into the occupation entity’s economy.

Intel is just one tech giant whose fortunes have soured since Palestinian freedom fighters breached Gaza’s concentration camp walls on 7 October 2023....

Wars That Never Should Have Been Fought Cannot Be Won

Perpetual War Abroad Is the Most Insidious Enemy to Liberty and Freedom at Home

I wrote my first article for TomDispatch in 2007 , two years after I’d retired from the military. That article was highly critical of the U.S. military and its disastrous war in Iraq. I wrote that we, the citizens of America, had to save the military from itself and its worst excesses. Sadly, we the people have been demobilized; we have no say about “our” military and its wars.

In fact, while the Iraq and Afghan Wars are now officially over, both lost at enormous cost, we the people are still issuing blank checks to a Pentagon that is wildly if not fatally deluded and delusional.

Back in 2018, Tom Engelhardt, the creator, editor, and prime mover of TomDispatch, asked me to write a new introduction to my article from 2007. Here’s that intro as I wrote it back then:

Retiring from the U.S. military liberated my tongue, but I quickly learned few people were interested in what I had to say. In 2007, I was outraged by the way the Bush administration hid behind the richly bemedaled chest of General David Petraeus, using his testimony before a spineless Congress to evade responsibility for the catastrophic war in Iraq. I wrote an op-ed about how ‘my’ military was deluding itself not only into believing that it was the ‘greatest’ but that it could somehow find a formula to win an unwinnable war. I sent it to the usual suspects, newspapers like the New York Times and Boston Globe, with no response. A friend then mentioned a website I’d never heard of, TomDispatch.com, and I found a man there who would listen: today’s equivalent of I.F. Stone, Tom Engelhardt. What started as a one-off article led to 55 more ‘ Tomgrams’ over the last decade.

In that very first post, I asked, ‘How can you win someone else’s civil war?’ It’s a question the U.S. military still avoids asking, let alone answering. Indeed, a state of what I then called ‘ongoing self-delusion’ about war persists in that military and American society as a whole. More than a decade later, its commanders continue to mislead themselves and the rest of us by speaking about ‘new’ approaches that promise ‘progress’ in places like Afghanistan.

Who will teach the Pentagon that wars that never should have been fought cannot be won? Who will remind the American people that perpetual war abroad is the most insidious enemy to liberty and freedom at home
? Members of the military, active duty and retired, need to speak up. Our oath to the Constitution was never about saluting smartly and following blindly, but about allegiance to the noble ideals expressed in that document. William J. Astore, May 2018

Since 2018, I’ve written another fifty or so articles for TomDispatch, nearly all of them focusing on U.S. military folly and fallacies. It hasn’t mattered. Both parties, Republicans and Democrats, profess their unconditional love of “our” troops, even as they’ve shoved and shoveled trillions of dollars to the military-industrial-congressional complex, the all-powerful MICIMATT* that increasingly infects our lives and infests our society and culture.

This November provides us another opportunity to go to the polls and allegedly vote for what we want. Most people want peace. The Republicans and Democrats offer us more war. Might I suggest that we vote for a person or party that actually seeks peace?

It’s highly unlikely we’re going to vote ourselves out of the mess we’re in. Look at the mainstream candidates! But at least we shouldn’t vote for yet more insanity.

US Tech Giants 'Collaborate' With Israel to Kill Palestinians: Report

Cloud services from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google allow the Israeli military to collect and analyze 'endless' amounts of intelligence on almost 'everyone' in Gaza

The Israeli army is using cloud storage and artificial intelligence services provided by Amazon, Google, and Microsoft to commit war crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as shown by a +972 Magazine report published on 5 August.

Israeli Colonel Racheli Dembinsky confirmed publicly for the first time on 10 July that the army is using cloud storage and artificial intelligence services provided by consumer tech giants at a conference entitled “IT for IDF” in Rishon Lezion, the Tel Aviv-based publication reports.

The “exponential capacity” of Amazon Web Services (AWS) public cloud system gives the Israeli military the ability to have “endless storage” for holding intelligence on almost “everyone” in Gaza, +972 says.

This intelligence has assisted Israel in carrying out assassinations and airstrikes that have killed civilians, the magazine added. Israeli airstrikes have killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza, the majority women and children, since 7 October.

According to intelligence sources, the Israeli military has its own servers to store intelligence information on Palestinians, but after the start of the war, “much more extensive storage capabilities and processing power were needed to keep billions of audio files (as opposed to just textual information or metadata), which compelled the army to turn to the cloud services offered by tech companies.
