Mexican President Says No Evidence of Fraud in Venezuela Elections — 7/31

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday there was no evidence of fraud in an election that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro claims he won but which the opposition contests and has sparked nationwide protests.

Lopez Obrador also reinstated his call for transparency and called on the Venezuelan electoral body to show evidence and make public all the voting tallies from Sunday's elections.

"I have no proof, there is no evidence in the case of Venezuela," the president said during his daily press conference, answering a question about potential fraud in Venezuela's election.

He also said Mexico will not participate in an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) permanent council scheduled for Wednesday after nine Latin American governments have called for one.

"We do not agree with the OAS' biased attitude," he said during the conference, saying the organization acknowledged the victory of Venezuelan opposition candidate too soon.

The Mexican president said earlier this week he would wait for Venezuela's election results to be reported fully before he recognized a winner.

Other countries and international organizations have expressed concerns about Sunday's election, while Lopez Obrador called for them to refrain from intervening in Venezuela.

US Rejects Venezuelan Election Results, Declares Opposition Candidate the Winner

Washington has launched another attempt to remove Nicolas Maduro from power in Caracas

On Thursday, the State Department said that Edmundo González Urrutia won Sunday’s presidential election. The Venezuelan government election agency announced that President Nicolas Maduro had won a third term.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed that Urrutia won the election by an “insurmountable margin.” “The announcement of results by the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council (CNE) were deeply flawed, yielding an announced outcome that does not represent the will of the Venezuelan people,” America’s top diplomat said.

Blinken’s statement continued, “Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election.”

The Secretary explained his conclusion was drawn from a report from the Carter Center, named for former US President Jimmy Carter. Blinken asserted the institute was “independent.” However, the Carter Center is funded by multiple US government agencies, including the State Department.

Over the past two decades, Washington has made multiple attempts to overthrow Maduro, and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez. Under President Donald Trump, the White House backed Juan Guaido’s claim to the presidency in Caracas.

Telegram’s New Era Merges Chat and Web: In-App Browser, Mini App Store, and More

On the last day of July, the encrypted messenger Telegram announced that the previous batch of updates concerns the in-app Telegram Browser, the Mini App Store, and more.

The browser has search, multiple tabs, bookmarks, and other standard functionality, as well as Web3 features that an announcement from the company said are immediately available thanks to the browser supporting decentralized sites on the TON blockchain network.

This is available to all users, which Telegram claims now number nearly one billion.

Instead of closing the browser, the in-app one now allows for collapsing and again opening pages from the bottom bar, meaning that Telegram users can now seamlessly switch between reading and posting messages, and being on a website or playing a game while saving their progress.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov said in a post on his platform that the ability to switch between these different elements means that communications and news consumption are now “merged” on the app.

He also explained that in order to test using the TON feature, users can open the link, tonsite://getting-started.ton.

..After months of fighting, several top figures in Hamas’s military and political wings have been killed: Saleh al-Arouri, Marwan Issa, Mohammed Deif (supposedly), and now Ismail Haniyeh, whose death in Tehran, attributed to Israel by foreign reports, came hours after senior Hezbollah official Fuad Shukr was killed in Beirut...

However, while progress has been made on targeted killings of top terrorist organization leaders 300 days into the war, efforts to come to a deal to free the hostages from captivity in Gaza have been far more stagnant.

300 days, and still no deal

For 300 days, 115 people have remained trapped in the Gaza Strip. For 300 days, their families and loved ones have been crying out for Israel to bring them home. And with no progress being made in negotiations through Qatari and Egyptian mediators, their fates remain uncertain.

In the early days of the war, the shared trauma of October 7 and the desire to see the hostages returned home were what brought the Israeli public together, creating a sense of unity following the heightened social divisions of the judicial reform crisis. But as the war progressed, that unity has ebbed and faded, and tensions and divisions once again characterize this country’s fractured society.

There is still no hostage deal in sight.

What's happening?
The X post expresses frustration and sadness over the design of this disposable vape unit. According to the post, the Swype vape includes an OLED display, a microprocessor, a Bluetooth module, and a touch digitizer, all of which are meant to be thrown away just a month after purchase.

"Lord alive this makes me so sad," the X user writes....

Reddit users, who saw the sentiments reposted to the r/Anticonsumption page, agreed. "Sure, because we don't have enough batteries in our waste dumps," one sarcastic user wrote.

Why are disposable vapes concerning?
Disposable vapes, particularly those with advanced features like touch screens and Bluetooth connectivity, contribute to the growing problem of electronic waste (e-waste).... AI Censorship Bill Raises Free Speech Concerns

An updated version of what critics refer to as the AI censorship bill, Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe Act (NO FAKES Act) has been introduced by senators Chris Coons, a Democrat, and Republican Marsha Blackburn.

The goal of the bill – that first saw the light of day last October as a discussion draft – is to ban what it calls unauthorized digital replicas while providing exemptions for parody, satire, use in documentaries, and other forms of generated content that should fall under the fair use rule.

The entertainment industry is happy with the legislative proposal, with support pouring in from Disney, the Motion Picture Association, Recording Industry Association of America, SAG-AFTRA, agencies, and more.

SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild), which wants a likeness act at the federal instead of the state level as is the case now, backed the bill, mentioning the need to protect intellectual property and performers’ likenesses and brands.

But prominent digital rights group, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), is unconvinced that these exemptions will work in real life, and fears that the bill, if passed, will result in limiting free speech.

Selective Service Repeal Act Reintroduced in the Senate

In the face of moves in Congress to ramp up U.S. readiness to activate a draft, Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) have reintroduced an alternative proposal to step back from the brink of mass military mobilization by repealing the Military Selective Service Act.

In 2016 , 2021 , and again in 2022 , Congress came close to approving legislation to expand the requirement to register with the Selective Service System for a possible military draft to include young women as well as young men. In 2024, that proposal is moving forward again in Congress as part of the annaul National Defense [sic] Authorization Act (NDAA), along with a proposal to try to register all young people “ automatically ” for a possible draft.

The Selective Service Repeal Act , reintroduced this week in the Senate as S. 4881 , would instead end draft registration entirely. This bill has been introduced several times before in Congress, starting in 2019 , but has never gotten a hearing in either the House or the Senate.

Ending draft registration would put an end to the fantasy that the draft is always available as a “fallback” — a myth that enables planning for larger, longer, less popular wars without concern for whether people will volunteer to fight them.

Male U.S. citizens and residents are required to register with the Selective Service System when they turn 18, and notify Selective Service every time they change their address until their 26th birthday .

Draft boards have been appointed and trained throughout the U.S. The Selective Service System maintains contingency plans for a general “cannon fodder” draft of young men (based on the current list of registrants) and a separate Health Care Personnel Delivery System . Congress has ordered the Pentagon to conduct a comprehensive mobilization exercise including its readiness to activate a draft.

Turkiye Bans Instagram Following Accusation of Anti-Palestine Censorship

A Turkish official says Instagram is censoring posts mourning Israel's assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh

Turkiye / Turkey blocked access to Instagram on 2 August after allegations the US-based social media platform censored posts mourning the death of Hamas political bureau leader Ismail Haniyeh earlier this week, Reuters reported.

Turkiye’s infotech regulator, the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK), announced the ban on its website on Friday without providing a reason or a timetable.

On Wednesday, Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun criticized Instagram for what he called its decision to block condolence posts for Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran by Israel while attending the inauguration ceremony for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on 31 July.

“This is censorship, pure and simple,” Altun, the communications director of the Turkish presidency, wrote on X, adding that Instagram had not cited any policy violations for its action.

There was no immediate comment from Meta Platforms Inc, Instagram and Facebook’s parent company.

Lawmakers Marshall and Gaetz Call for Probes into Big Tech’s Alleged Censorship of Trump Assassination Attempt, Seek Google and DHS Testimony

Google is being accused of doing its part to “memory-hole” one of the most serious incidents in American politics in decades – the attempted assassination of former president, now presidential candidate, Donald Trump.

Google’s search engine is leaving out relevant results in the autosuggest feature, thus decreasing the likelihood of users learning more about the event, and importantly, the investigation into it.

Senator Roger Marshall, a Republican who is a member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has announced a probe into this behavior, blasting Google at the same time for yet again engaging in censorship of conservatives, and, demonstrating “willful discrimination against President Trump and users of (the) search engine.”

For these reasons, Marshall wrote to Google CEO Sundar Pichai to tell him that he should show up before lawmakers and testify about the company’s conduct. The importance of this type of censorship is all the greater since, as the senator notes, Google is the largest search engine in the world.

But now, according to him, it has turned into “a propaganda wing of the Biden-Harris Administration and the radical Left.” The senator sees this as a form of election interference, accusing Big Tech in general of bias in favor first of the Clintons, then Biden, and now Kamala Harris.

Congressional Commission Determines US ‘Not Prepared for Global War'

The report recommends Washington significantly boost its ballooning defense budget and 'foster an alliance that could lead to global war'

The US Commission on the National Defense Strategy, a congressionally mandated group with members handpicked by bipartisan lawmakers, has determined that Washington is unprepared to face a possible global war and must significantly overhaul its national defense strategy.

In its 132-page report, published by the RAND Corporation, the commission recommends Washington boost its nearly $1 trillion yearly defense budget to “Cold War-era levels” and urges the government to “foster an alliance that could lead to global war.”

“The United States must spend more effectively and efficiently to build the future force, not perpetuate the existing one. Additional resources will be necessary. Congress should pass a supplemental appropriation to begin a multiyear investment in the national security innovation and industrial base,” the report says.

Increasing Washington’s defense spending would allegedly address recruiting shortcomings, a “grossly inadequate” industrial base, and “underfunded cyber and space domains.”

Citing global “threats,” such as China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran, the commission endorsed its 2018 recommendation to increase base defense spending by 3 to 5 percent annually above inflation. US defense spending oscillated between 4.9 and 16.9 percent during the Cold War.
