Lawmakers Request Delay On Meta’s Shutdown Of “Fact-checker” Favorite Content Surveillance Tool

Meta’s decision to shut down a content surveillance tool called CrowdTangle, announced earlier in the year and about to take effect next month, has met with opposition from a group of US lawmakers.

CrowdTangle, which the giant bought in 2016, has over the years been “repurposed” by “fact-checkers,” researchers focusing on “disinformation” as well as media who flag it.

Meta said it is replaced by the Meta Content Library, available to some researchers but not commercial entities (such as media outlets, a number of whom are currently running “fact-checking” operations).

Now 17 lawmakers (three Republicans among them) have written to Meta asking that it reconsider this decision, referring to CrowdTangle as a “transparency tool” both for researchers and journalists.

The letter, addressed to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, says CrowdTangle is being used to “view and study” content on Facebook and Instagram, but also other platforms, searching for content ranging from foreign influence, and terrorism, to mental health.

Su-35 Fires R-37m Missile To Shoot Down Ukrainian Warplane From 200-Km Distance

A Russian Su-35S fighter jet shot down a MiG-29 aircraft of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from a distance of more than 200 kilometers.

According to the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper, the Russian Sukhoi Su-35S fired a unique R-37M air-to-air missile to shoot down the Ukrainian aircraft.

“Confirmed. The pilot’s claim plus objective control, plus confirmation from the AFU. The MiG-29 was shot down at a range of 213 kilometers. No one in the world can repeat this. No one,” authors of the Voevoda Broadcasts Telegram channel indicated.

The R-37M missile is the world's longest-range air-to-air missile. Its declared range is 300 kilometers, and its maximum flight speed is six times the speed of sound, which actually makes it a hypersonic weapon. The weapon is carried by such Russian fighters as MiG-31, Su-30SM, Su-35S.

The missile shot down Ukrainian Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters, Su-25 attack aircraft, Su-24M and Bayraktar frontline bombers. Experts note that the R-37M has no equal in the world in terms of range, speed, and altitude of targets hit.

The Air Force of Ukraine is largely armed with outdated versions of aircraft inherited from the Soviet army. Russia is confident that NATO aircraft will not be able to change the balance of power should they be transferred to Ukraine.

Tech Giants Face Scrutiny As Trump Assassination Attempt Is Omitted From Autosuggest And AI

Google is facing criticism after users reported that the search engine is refusing to fill in autocomplete results about the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The search engine giant’s autocomplete system ignored any references to the July 13 event, which has sparked outrage and allegations that Google is manipulating search outcomes favoring the upcoming presidential election.

Curiously, the screenshots taken from Google exhibited search suggestions linked to historic events, such as ex-President Ford’s and Ronald Reagan’s unsuccessful assassinations, along with the triggering assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, which initiated World War I, and more. The attempted assassination of Donald Trump was conspicuously missing.

The term “assassination attempt trump” turned up void on Google, according to multiple users’ accounts.

Donald Trump Jr. responded fervently via X, exclaiming, “Big Tech is trying to interfere in the election AGAIN to help Kamala Harris. We all know this is intentional election interference from Google. Truly despicable.”

The search engine giant denied any targeted action on their predictive results. A spokesperson stated, “No manual action was exercised on these predictions.” They further elaborated that Google’s systems are designed to filter autocomplete predictions connected to politically violent incidents, which had been functioning exactly as expected before the horrifying act took place. “We are striving to update our systems in order to accommodate such incidents more effectively,” they added.

Riots In Defense Of Israeli Troops Accused Of Gang Rape 'Halted' Lebanon Prep: Army

Settlers, far-right activists, and government officials stormed two military sites on Monday after nine soldiers were arrested for brutally assaulting a Palestinian prisoner

The Israeli military halted high-level discussions on escalating the war against Hezbollah in Lebanon due to the settler riots that erupted on 29 July following the arrest of several soldiers responsible for the sexual assault of a Palestinian prisoner at the notorious Sde Teiman detention center, Hebrew media reported.

“The IDF says that Monday's incidents at both Sde Teiman and Beit Lid has harmed national security, since the army was forced to halt discussions and situation assessments vis-à-vis the northern front for many hours in order to address the disturbance,” Haaretz newspaper reported on 30 July.

The army said it was “forced to redeploy troops from the West Bank to secure the Beit Lid military court and would reinforce them with additional forces” the next day, Haaretz added.

According to Maariv newspaper, the Israeli army also withdrew some of its forces from the Gaza Strip, moving them towards the Beit Lid base, where the soldiers are being held.

Tel Aviv was holding high-level deliberations on its plans to respond to a missile strike that killed 12 Syrians living under Israeli occupation in Golan Heights on Saturday. Israel blamed Hezbollah, vowing to escalate its attacks on Lebanon in response to the killings, which many said were the result of an Iron Dome interceptor. The Lebanese resistance categorically denied its involvement.

🇺🇦UKRAINE LOST $8.2 BILLION IN AID?! — 5 Days Ago

The Pentagon's accounting errors have led to $8.2 billion in aid for Ukraine being misplaced, revealing severe flaws in financial management.

Recent findings show an additional $2 billion misjudgment, questioning the transparency of U.S. military support to Ukraine.

With ongoing corruption allegations in Ukraine, this situation underscores the need for enhanced accountability in handling foreign aid.

Sputnik: The Pentagon has found another $2 billion worth of accounting errors for Ukraine aid, paving the way to sending additional arms to the Kiev regime.

Combined with $6.2 billion in overestimated arms and equipment, the improperly valued assets have reached a total of $8.2 billion.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) is facing challenges in assessing the cost of military items sent to Ukraine due to the vague definitions of value in the Foreign Assistance Act, as per the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

⚡️ Last June, the DoD acknowledged a $6.2 billion error stemming from its overvaluation of military items provided to the Kiev regime.

⚡️ On June 13, 2024, the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General (DoD OIG) raised a red flag over the Pentagon's failure to implement updated policies to tackle its accounting errors. According to preliminary estimates, the department overvalued defense equipment provided to Ukraine by an additional $1.9 billion.
The apparent waste of funds related to the provision of military aid to the Kiev regime has been exacerbated by suspicions of Ukrainian corruption.

⚡️ In January, the DoD OIG concluded that officials and diplomats in the US and Europe had failed to quickly or fully account for around 40,000 weapons sent to the front.

⚡️ The same month, Ukrainian contractors and Defense Ministry officials were accused of embezzling nearly $40 million allocated to buying 100,000 mortar shells, as per Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).

⚡️ Watchdogs allege the figure of misappropriated funds could be higher. Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) also refers to growing concerns over Ukrainian weapons smuggling.

‘Entire Resistance Axis’ Will Respond To Haniyeh Assassination: IRGC

The assassination of the top Hamas chief came hours after a brutal Israeli strike on Beirut, which has raised concerns that a regional flare-up is nearing

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) condemned Israel’s assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh on 31 July, vowing that the Resistance Axis as a whole will respond to the attack.

“This crime demonstrated that the criminal, murderous, and terrorist Zionist gang, disregarding international rules and regulations, spares no criminal action to cover up its humiliating defeats in the nine-month war in Gaza, which has resulted in the massacre of tens of thousands of Palestinian women, men, and children,” the IRGC said on Wednesday, hours after Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran.

“Undoubtedly, this crime by the Zionist regime will be met with a severe and painful response from the powerful and grand Resistance Axis, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran … the blessings of the Martyr of Jerusalem Dr Ismail Haniyeh's efforts in defending the cause and rights of the Palestinian nation will help them,” it added.

The IRGC announced on Wednesday morning that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed when they were targeted in their guesthouse. “The attack is under investigation and the results will be announced later in the day,” it said.

Tehran has declared three days of national mourning for Haniyeh’s assassination.
