Erdogan Says Turkey Could ‘Enter’ Israel Like It Did In Libya And Nagorno-Karabakh

Israel's foreign minister responded by threatening Erdogan that he could become the next Saddam Hussein

On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appeared to threaten military intervention against Israel , saying Turkey could “enter” Israel as it did in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We must be very strong so that Israel can’t do these ridiculous things to Palestine. Just like we entered Karabakh, just like we entered Libya, we might do similar to them,” Erdogan said in a televised address. “There is no reason why we cannot do this … We must be strong so that we can take these steps.”

Starting in 2020, Turkey, a NATO member, began deploying military advisors and thousands of Syrian mercenaries to Libya to support the UN-backed Government of National Accord.

Turkey also strongly backed Azerbaijan’s 2020 assault on Nagorno-Karabakh by providing weapons and political support. The conflict ended in 2023 with Azerbaijan completing the ethnic cleansing of the over 100,000 ethnic Armenians who lived in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Turkey denied that it intervened directly in Nagorno-Karabakh, but during the 2020 war, there were allegations that Ankara sent mercenaries recruited from Syria to fight for Azerbaijan.

Western Nations Cancel Flights To Lebanon As Israeli Threats Mount

Israel’s vow to respond to the Majdal Shams strike has raised fears of an all-out war with Hezbollah

Flights to and from Beirut airport faced cancellations and delays on 29 July due to Israeli threats of an attack on Lebanon, following the massacre in the town of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights...

This escalation comes following a strike in the occupied Golan Heights on Saturday afternoon, where a missile fell on a soccer field in the town of Majdal Shams, resulting in the deaths of twelve people, including ten children.

Israeli authorities claimed that Hezbollah was responsible for this attack and identified the type of rocket used as an Iranian-made Falaq-1 rocket. However, Hezbollah categorically denied any involvement or responsibility.

“The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon categorically denies the allegations reported by some enemy media outlets and various media platforms regarding the targeting of Majdal Shams, and confirms that the Islamic Resistance has no connection to the incident at all, and categorically denies all false allegations in this regard,” Hezbollah said on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that it was an Israeli Iron Dome interceptor missile that fell on the field, according to an Al-Arabi TV correspondent who spoke with a member of Israel’s ambulance service, Magen David Adom.

Hezbollah additionally informed the UN the same day that it was an Israeli interceptor missile that fell on the field.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said on 28 July that Israel is responsible for the deaths and warned that it is using the incident to blame Hezbollah and “ignite” the region.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant visited bereaved families in Majdal Shams and promised that the army would take all necessary measures to restore security and ensure that life returns to normal. “Hezbollah will pay a price for this – our actions will speak volumes,” he added.

Gallant’s visit comes a day after Majdal Shams residents expelled far-right Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich, calling him a criminal and murderer.

Israeli Prime Minister tried to visit Majdal Shams on 29 July, only to be expelled by Syrian Druze locals fifteen minutes later.

The Syrian Druze community in Majdal Shams has called on Israel not to politicize the incident.

The US government cautioned Israel that attacking Hezbollah targets in Beirut in retaliation for the deadly strike on the Golan Heights on Saturday could lead to the situation escalating uncontrollably, according to both Israeli and US officials.

Arrest Warrants Dropped For Israeli Soldiers Accused Of Gang Raping Palestinian Detainee

News of the arrest of the soldiers from the notorious Sde Teiman prison enraged Israeli politicians, including National Security Minister Ben Gvir

Israeli military police canceled the arrest warrants issued against the soldiers accused of gang-raping a Palestinian detainee at the notorious Sde Teiman prison and limited themselves to interrogating them, Israel’s Channel 14 reported on 29 July.

The decision came after Knesset members and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir traveled to Sde Teiman to join others in protesting the detention of the soldiers.

Earlier in the day, Military Police officers raided the notorious prison and detained nine Israeli reservist soldiers suspected of the crime.

The Israeli military issued a statement saying, “Following a suspicion of serious abuse of a detainee who was held at the Sde Teiman detention facility, an investigation by the military police was opened by order of the military attorney’s office.”

“According to a security source, the detainee was taken to a hospital with severe injuries in an intimate place – injuries that left him without the ability to walk,” a report by Haaretz stated.

F-16s To Appear In Ukraine Within Weeks, Will Operate Far From Front

Ukraine is set to begin receiving F-16 fighter jets from its Western backers later this week after months of delays.

The advanced aircraft will serve in a limited role out of fear they will be easily shot down by Russian air defenses.

Well over a year after the US and its NATO allies announced a plan to train Ukrainian pilots on the F-16 and supply the jet to Kiev, the first batch of warplanes is expected to be operational in a matter of weeks. The arrival of the American-made aircraft is not expected to have a major impact on the fighting.

It is unclear if any F-16s have arrived in Ukraine yet. Officials in Kiev say they are “in the process” of moving them into the country, but have declined to say how many planes they would receive, the New York Times reported .

According to the Washington Post , the advanced aircraft are expected to operate far from the front lines and mainly focus on downing Russian missiles and drones. The US administration is concerned that Russian air defenses will be able to quickly defeat the F-16s.

US Announces $1.7 Billion Weapons Package For Ukraine

The announcement comes as Russia is making steady gains in the Donbas

The Pentagon announced on Friday that it was providing Ukraine with a new weapons package worth $1.7 billion, which includes munitions for air defense systems, ammunition for HIMARS rocket systems, artillery shells, and other types of equipment.

The package includes $1.5 billion that’s being provided through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). The USAI allows the US to purchase weapons for Ukraine, which means it could take months or years before the equipment is delivered.

The other $200 million uses the Presidential Drawdown Authority, which allows President Biden to ship weapons to Ukraine directly from Pentagon stockpiles. The announcement came a few days after the Pentagon said it found an “accounting error” that overvalued previous weapons sent to Ukraine, freeing up another $2 billion to spend on the proxy war.

The new US military aid comes as Russian forces are making steady gains in the east and are closing in on the Donestk city of Pokrovsk.

Newsom Threatens Laws Against Deepfakes After Kamala Harris Parody Video Goes Viral

In a clash between Gov. Gavin Newsom and tech magnate Elon Musk, the California governor promoted his intention to endorse a law targeting what he calls the misuse of AI in political advertising.

Musk retorted sharply on social media, emphasizing the legality of parody in the United States.

“I, Kamala Harris, am your Democrat candidate for president because Joe Biden finally exposed his senility at the debate,” the synthetic Harris voice says in the video. “I was selected because I am the ultimate diversity hire. I’m both a woman and a person of color, so if you criticize anything, I say you’re both sexist and racist,” the video continues.

The legislation Newsom refers to is part of a broader legislative effort to combat “deceptive” practices in digital campaign materials.

Current proposals include the “Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024” by Asm. Marc Berman, D-Menlo Park. This act mandates that social platforms block “misleading” electoral content 120 days before and 60 days after an election. Additionally, it would require platforms to label manipulated content outside these periods and enable California residents to flag such content as “deceptive.”

Another significant proposal, AB 2839 by Asm. Gail Pellerin, D-Santa Cruz, aims to extend the period during which it is illegal to distribute deceptive media of a candidate to 120 days before an election.

Israel Bombs Beirut, Claims It Targeted A Senior Hezbollah Commander

Hezbollah has warned of a big response to any strikes deep inside Lebanon

An Israeli airstrike targeted the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday, a step that could escalate the Israel-Hezbollah conflict into a full-blown war.

Israel said that it targeted a senior Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr. A Lebanese government official told CNN that Shukr survived the strike , and Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen is reporting that one civilian was killed and 68 others were wounded.

The Israeli military claimed Shukr was responsible for the rocket that killed 12 Druze children in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday. Hezbollah denied responsibility for the killing of the children and has said they were hit by an Israeli air defense rocket.

According to Al Jazeera , Hezbollah has warned that if Israel launched a strike deep into Lebanese territory, it would mean “all rules of war” are off. The last time Israel bombed Beirut was on January 2 , when the Israeli military launched a drone strike that targeted a senior Hamas official.

Media reports said the US was warning Israel against targeting Beirut , but the US is still providing unconditional military aid and not using any of its leverage to rein in Israel. The US has also previously ensured it would back Israel in a full-blown war in Lebanon.

Julian Assange’s Deal With The Devil

After five years of incarceration in Belmarsh high-security prison, having already spent seven years in political asylum—what was tantamount to house arrest in the Ecuadorian embassy—Julian Assange was finally permitted by the British government to return to his homeland of Australia. The deal Assange made with the U.S. government to end its extradition quest and thereby secure his release can be viewed in one of two ways. On its face, the deal required that Assange “confess” to a felony which he did not commit, accepting a sentence of prison time already served.

“Working as a journalist I encouraged my source to provide information that was said to be classified in order to publish that information. I believe that the First Amendment protected that activity but I accept that as written it’s a violation of the Espionage Act statute.”

Assange’s attorney Barry Pollack further clarified that Assange believed “that the conduct of issue should be protected by the First Amendment but understands that no court has held that there is a First Amendment defence to the Espionage Act, he understands that his conduct violates the terms of the Espionage Act, and is pleading guilty on that basis.”

The judge accepted Assange’s admission of guilt for one felony charge (under section 793 of the Espionage Act), “conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information.” He was then sentenced to time served, and pronounced a free man.

Supporters of Assange and Wikileaks all over the world rejoiced at the surprising development, having mostly resigned themselves to the depressing likelihood that Assange would be made into a martyr for future generations to pay tribute to on holidays established in his name, with tourists snapping photos of effigy statues in city squares, and future politicians issuing lengthy speeches in which they would lament the obvious miscarriage of justice. Instead, Assange walked out of Belmarsh prison onto an airplane which transported him to the court where his protracted dispute with the U.S. government was concluded, after which he flew to Canberra, Australia, to reunite with his family and resume his life.

...Now we must all rally for a complete pardon of Assange on the grounds that, in fact, he never committed any crime at all. It seems unlikely that the U.S. government would go so far as to admit that its bogus case had no merits whatsoever, but by continuing to discuss what was done to Julian Assange, we can at the very least help to disabuse people of the false narratives used for years to discredit and vilify him as a Russian asset and a rapist. Let us celebrate the liberation of Assange by refusing to permit the U.S. government’s version of the story of how his case was concluded to be etched into the annals of history. Poetic justice will be achieved when Wikileaks (or a like-minded organization) publishes the internal memos which led to this felicitous turn of events.

Ultimately, the outdated and overly vague Espionage Act must be rescinded by congress, on the grounds that it makes whistleblowing all but impossible, requiring as it now does a willingness to endure a superhuman amount of self-sacrifice. The text of the Act has changed over the more than century since its ratification, but the core remains the same, and clearly assumes that the U.S. government can do no wrong, when the whole point of whistleblowing is to expose government malfeasance. In most prosecutions under the Espionage Act, the government has focused on the danger faced by persons exposed through disclosure of state secrets. But if the government were not committing what are easily interpretable as crimes, then there would be no such danger at all. And were government officials not permitted to act without effective oversight and with complete impunity, then they would be much less likely to commit crimes in the first place.
